    It would be really cool if you made another video showing different workouts (leg day, chest and back day, core day) with just the equipment you showed us. Thanks

    Heavy duty bands (not the skinny round tubes). Super versatile and will be more than enough for anyone outside professional powerlifters/bodybuilders. Plus they weigh like 5lbs all together so they're easy to travel with and you also don't have to worry about neighbors downstairs complaining about slamming noises.

    trap bars are great alternative if you don't have a squat rack. I put a 4 inch platform below that I stand on to give more range of motion

    My simple home gym set up is, one pair of 90ibs adjustable dumbbells, 1 bench, 1 yoga mat, resistance bands. That's all I need, I was able to target most of the muscle groups I need to target. Next project is pull up bar.

  • @cadeyrndragheim22
    @cadeyrndragheim22 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    One of my recommendations would be a resistance band or two. At least getting the lightest one, or one step above. Good for a lot of exercises and for weaker muscle, or to add some resistance to what you're already doing. I also like doing lateral raises with it. My shoulder joints were rather hurting when i started working out so i used that a lot for the side delts. Still use them form time to time since it's a different type of resistance and you can just shorten the length of it to increase it's resistance. Like if you're doing with your right arm, first put one end under your right leg, then under your left and then under your left and keep your right foot on it too. Also really nice for triceps, just use the top of a doorframe and hold one end with your other hand, or pull-aparts (while externally rotating ofc) etc. And for finishers after an exercise to squeeze a bit more out of it.

    I started my home gym with a power tower (Bowflex, used, at Play it again sports. $149 in brand new shape) I can do ab work, chins/pull-ups, dips, body weight rows and so on. The next was a 45lb basic kettle bell. I think I paid $50. Next I went to a gym auction and bought an adjustable bench and three sets of dumbbells (30/50/70) for $150 total. And a jump rope. It’s still all the equipment I need, under $500. And I have access to a gym for the days I want to do heavy barbell work or use cable machines.

    I use adjustable dial dumbbells. They save up so much space and you can change the weight on the fly. Just be careful that the weights fully click in place before using them, or you can get injured!

    Excellent content. I like the fact that you are realistic in these challenging times. Some of your fellow TH-camrs talk about essentials, yet display a set up that would shame a commercial gym.
    The only criticism, albeit a minor one, is that you did not include a pull-up bar as part of your essential list. A half-decent pull-up bar with, for instance, rings attached can be used for a multitude of exercises.

    My two favorite pieces of home gym equipment are my speed rope, and my suspension trainer (basically a TRX, but 1/3 the price). Because they are so light and compact, and I often have to travel for work, they come with me.

    Once again, Thomas to the rescue - thank you!! Before moving from a larger home with a full blown home gym in Seattle to a smaller downtown condo in SoCal (where I walk to the gym - at least I used to), I had it made. Since COVID, I’ve cut my living room in half and laid mats on the floor behind my couch, put a large mirror on the wall and scraped together a set of dumbbells and put to use an old Total Gym (snagged from a neighbor who was getting rid of it). Not sure I have room for a Hex Bar but I’m definitely going to get a kettlebell and jump rope! Thanks again!

    You can progress until the end of your life with strength if you have:
    1 set of gymnastics rings
    2-4 sets of kettlebells ranging from 8kg to 20kg
    You can add cardio and unlock a ton of variation if you add:
    1 jump rope
    1 set of running shoes
    A few weights of resistance bands
    If you don't believe that relatively light kettlebells can handle your training forever, refer to Easy Strenght by Dan John.

    No offense, but a better list & more versatile list would be:
    1. TRX
    2. Powerblock dumbbells and/or Kettlebells (or other adjustable dumbbells of your choice)
    3. Resistance bands (loop bands, e.g. Undersun bands are great & made for being used for strength training, they also sell gloves so you don't cut your hands)
    4. Adjustable bench
    5. Cardio equipment (jump-rope could be that, but TRX cardio works great as well & would potentially allow for another item to go on the list as #5)
    Well, that's just quick off of my head.. not saying that your suggestions are bad though, I do not own a slam/medicine ball what so ever, but you did convince me how great they potentially could be.

    A home gym is not that expensive, if you value in the money you save on gym membership fees. 10 years of gym will easily cost you 4.000 - 6.000 Dollars. You can get a pretty sweet home gym with that kind of budget.

      @@lukeash3029 exactly. Also for me personally (and maybe for some other folks too), I have been training vor about 20 years now, and I never stepped foot in a gym, i always worked out at home. I have the essentials (some dumbells, some barbells, a bench, a rack, pullup bar, dip-bar and about 220 kg (480 lbs) of plates. I could never train as consistantly as I do if i would have to get into my car, drive half way through town, maybe sit in a traffic jam, just to work out. I would just skip :). Here at home, i can wear whatever i want (sometimes just shorts) i can listen to loud music, I never have to wait for any equipment and nobody cares if i sweat all over my bench :D.

    • @lukeash3029
      @lukeash3029 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Katy Normand You need to figure out what your 1 rep max is and then you can calculate what 70-80% of that is. Hope this helps 👍🏼👍🏾

    • @katynormand592
      @katynormand592 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luke & Ash - thanks for the response.
      As someone who doesn’t have any fitness knowledge, could you please explain. What I am interpreting from your comment is... if I did 1-set of 15 squats/reps (15 being my absolute max) then my regimen would be 70-80% (10-12 reps) per set?

    • @lukeash3029
      @lukeash3029 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem Katy, we like to help. But answering your question... No you would find a weight where you can only do 1 rep (1 squat for example) and you couldn’t do more than that. That would be your 1 rep max. Then take that weight you just squatted and multiply it by 70-80% to get the weight Thomas is referring to.

    jump roping is bad for your knees. you can warm up walking backwards slowly and engage the same muscles with no damage to the body

    1. Pull up bar
    2. Kettle bell
    3. Regular barbell (not trap bar)
    Imo that's the home gym essentials, in the order of importance

    • @pclfld8253
      @pclfld8253 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yea I'm actually surprised he's not mentioning pullup bar... that's like best workout with the cheapest of equipment... of course, fancier pullup bar is more expensive

      Pull up bar before a barbell 🤦

    • @Fin4L6are
      @Fin4L6are 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DarkAbyss9 you can do pushing exercises without a bar bell on any floor, but you don't have pulling exercises except the bent over row with barbell.

      @@Fin4L6are lol pushups only get you so far.
      You can also do pullups with a barbell if you have half a brain.
      You do know the barbell can be used for more than just a pulling excercise right? You do also know more than a bent over row exists for back with a barbell to?
      The barbell is one of the most versatile pieces of equipment for a gym. Certainly more useful and beneficial then what a single pullup bar gives you

    • @Fin4L6are
      @Fin4L6are 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DarkAbyss9 "pushups only get you so far" depends but we're talking about essentials. "bent over row exists for back with a barbell to" this is what I was literally talking about. I disagree a barbell would be more benificial than a pull up bar because again, it's easy to do a bunch of pushing exercises without it. But if you manage to combine a barbell as a pull up bar that sounds not bad at all, good luck with that.
