  • Welcome to our first time watching Batman Begins (2005).
    How does a DC film superhero compare with the Marvel Universe to the new generation?
    The origins of Bruce Wayne in Gotham City becoming Batman. Directed by Christopher Nolan and written by him with David S. Goyer. Starring Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy, Tom Wilkinson, Rutger Hauer, Morgan Freeman and Ken Watanabe (what a cast!).
    With this one, we had a tough audience to please, being spoiled previously by the Marvel Universe films, but it slowly built up and up and we loved it. In the editing of this reaction video, we loved it even more as we spotted more and more detail. It's a truly excellent film and filmmaking.

    Iron Man's suit wasn't built to actually work to film the movies... Nolan had the Tumbler actually built to DO the stuff for real to capture in frame on camera!
    Kid is just mesmerized by the "SHINY" of Marvel.

    It was cute how resistant the son was to this movie at first and slowly come around by the end. I’m also a fan of origin films so this one is my favorite. Nolan films are much more layered and deeper so of course his Batman film plays with a lot of themes. Perhaps he will appreciate it later in life. And I saw this movie over 5 times so I can say it has rewatchable value. 😉

      I'm almost embarrassed to say that I've watched BATMAN BEGINS something like twenty times and watched something like another thirty reactions to it and I'm still not tired of it, though I do skip ahead through some parts sometimes. Nolan is brilliant and nobody else has come close to getting Batman as right as this on screen other than BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES.

    US army was researching for the grappling gun and to escalate buildings. The Tumbler is a real car custom made for the movie. Memory materials and Kevlar are real. Certainly is much more attainable than Iron Man's armor.

    I like the Marvel films. However, you should tell your son that just about ALL scenes involving Iron Man's suit were made with CGI animations. Robert Downey Jr. simply ran around in a leotard in front of a green screen (as did Spider-Man, Falcon, Black Panther, etc.). On the other hand, nearly all of the visuals seen in the Christopher Nolan films were actually made in real life. The suit is real. The city is real (mostly filmed in Chicago for this film). The "effects" were actual costumes and machines demonstrated with real-world stunts. There is even a great video of Jay Leno (the comedian and car enthusiast) driving Batman's vehicle through Los Angeles.

    As a fellow who's owned a comic book shop, and has made my living selling comic books for 30 years, and been a fan since childhood, it's particularly fun not only to see you guys review this film, but your son's reaction to it, too. I frankly love both Marvel and DC, comics and films, though admittedly Marvel has the better track record with movies. That noted, DC still has a few of the very best in the genre.
    Your son REALLY didn't want to watch the film, at first. It was obvious in his body language, even. I'm glad he stuck it out and even changed his opinion to a degree. I really think he'll enjoy the next one in the series.
    Watching him debate you about Batman compared to Iron Man was a real hoot, too. 😂
    One final note: I am admittedly more a Marvel guy, too. But, that said, DC paved the way in both comics and film for Marvel, so the characters do deserve respect. 😊 If there wasn't a Batman, there wouldn't have been an Iron Man, in either medium. Superman and Batman's successes are what birthed the superhero in comics and movies.

    One other thing about Batman other than his genius was his commitment to never kill or use guns. So in Batman vs Superman, an older Batman is using guns and killing badguys which was soo off-putting at first and I think many fans were upset with that.
    But when I read the graphic novels of older Batman, I understand now in the aging Batman universe, he was just fed up with the ever-continuing crime and started to break his own rules, which was both sad and understandable.

    No, I'm afraid you misunderstood a point. Bruce was never, ever, angry with his father. Not at all.
    Ras told Bruce that he should be angry with his father simply to get Bruce angry with Ras to distract Bruce during the fight because it was such an absurd thing to say. It worked, enraging Bruce at Ras and causing him to lose track of the fact that Bruce was literally on thin ice.
    That's all. Bruce wasn't angry with his father.

    • @NoHandleGrr
      @NoHandleGrr 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Incidentally, Nolan made one weird mistake, which is having the name pronounced "Razz." "Ras al Ghul" is actually pronounced, according to his creator, and DC Comics, and every other place Ras has appeared, such as BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, as "Ray-sh." Raysh-al-gool is the proper pronunciation.
      Just for the record.

    Batman is also known as "the world's greatest detective", so his "power" if you can call it that is he's a super genius. He is the only human with no powers in the Jistice League but he commands high respect because of his morals and resolve. Some other older DC movies are okay, but these Nolan ones are the only DC movies that really shine for me. Tim Burton one was Allright but you can see the comic book influence, but these ones are more modeled after graphic novel type grittiness.

    Sorry, but in the comics, Joe Chill killed Bruce Wayne's parents. Tim Burton made up the idea that the Joker killed them, which made no sense whatsoever in the actual Batman comics continuity, and was a terrible, terrible, idea that only worked in the isolated film, under the typical movie logic where only the things shown in the one film exist and everything has to explain everything else.
    Fortunately, the idea remained used only in Burton's film and never polluted the comics or any other adaption.
    The whole point of Batman is that he opposes ordinary criminals, exists to fight ordinary criminals, and was created by the act of an ordinary criminal. The super-criminals came later and only because they made for more interesting stories once stories about normal criminals had been exhausted.
    But the point of Batman is that he's a normal man and he's not some kind of superpowered being fighting other superpowered beings. Batman fighting strange costumed criminals is just part of his evolution. He wasn't created with the idea of a Justice League, or to team up with Superman, either. All these things came later.

      This is what I love about Batman; his close relationship with the criminal underworld rather than the more outlandish bad guys

    • @NoHandleGrr
      @NoHandleGrr 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@GenerationMediaReaction: In the comics, sometimes Bruce/Batman has used yet another persona, this one a very very very minor criminal known as "Matches Malone," who infiltrates gangs as a henchman flunky to pick up intel.
      And of course Batman is also a master of disguise among his infinite number of skills, so he often goes undercover in any number of ways and circumstances. And cultivates informants.
      And as is shown in the movies, loves to frighten criminals into giving up the information.
      There are funny moments in the animated series -- SUPERMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, I think, though it might be B:TAS --where Superman has to disguise himself as Batman for the episode to investigate Batman/Bruce having disappeared, and Robin has to give him instructions on how to be intimidating. In other episodes Superman tries and fails to intimidate criminals because they don't find it credible that he'd hurt them. Batman, yes, Superman, no.

    It's very psychologically normal for kids to have trouble liking two things that are "culturally opposed", in this case liking Marvel or liking D.C., and there are many reasons for this being the case- one that immediately comes to mind is what it's like if everyone in your class or friends insists that one thing is bad and another thing is good. He did a great job of being able to take some time and suppress his feelings going in and I think we can all be proud of him! Also, speaking for myself as a fan of both D.C. and Marvel, it's ok to like Bruce AND Tony! They're very different people with very different areas of expertise, Batman/Bruce is a detective first and a ninja second whose life was built on the pain of loss and fear. Tony is a genius inventor first and a superphilanthropist second whose life was originally built on blood and death who came to see the error of his ways but also still suffered from critical levels of (often factually justified) arrogance. They're both interesting people as characters and would probably really enjoy each other's company as long as their business interests never came into conflict, but then if their secrets were out between each other then even that wouldn't probably affect their 'relationship'. I'm really looking forward to the next two films and beyond!

    The idea that if one likes Marvel comics, one can't like DC comics makes zero sense. It's no different than saying "I like chocolate ice cream, therefore I hate cherry ice cream." One can like five, ten, twenty different flavors of ice cream.
    But kids get a lot of peer pressure. The "infinite batarangs" is obviously something a friend told him, since it certainly doesn't come from this movie. "If you like Marvel, you can't like DC" is a very very bizarre idea.

      I have to say that I have crossed fingers about the new DC stuff coming up. I really am not interested in a television show about the Penguin and I'm afraid that I didn't care for the latest Batman iteration.
      But the great thing about the superheros is that they've all -- both DC and Marvel -- been around for so many decades that they've all, except for the very most recent, had many interpretations, many versions, been done in many styles, so if you don't like one, there's always another to like. I don't like the 2022 version? I still have Christopher Nolan and there will be yet other versions in future.
      And I'm, as you can tell, one of those rare movie fans who has always read, and will always continue to read, the actual comics, the source of all this goodness in the first place, so I'll never run short of good stuff, no matter what the big studios decide.
      Indeed, the problem is always that there's far far far too much to read and catch up on, not too little good stuff. (I mean, sure, there are plenty of bad comics and books and movies, but it's not hard to toss those aside and move on to the next.)
      Boy, I'm awfully chatty for YT comments. :-)

    I didn’t like this one at first. Wait until the wee man sees the dark knight. In the comics world there has always been a massive divide between who likes marvel and who likes DC. As for the movies/tv shows I think it depends when you grow up. I grew up in the 90s, so, I was exposed to the Burton films, and the Jim Carrey one (I actually enjoy it, I like the neon look), the animated series, and for Superman I watch the Dean Cain show, my dad also showed me Adam West Batman as well as the Superman films and 50s tv show. But, with the past 15 years being dominant by Marvel (besides Arrowvirse) I can see how kid generation being more into Marvel.

      @@deathfab yeah, and besides the 2001 Spider-Man movie, Marvel didn't have much. I think that was because at the time it wasn't under one studio. But that was also a bit of a DC flaw, of when in the 2000s when everyone wanted Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum to be in the Brandon Roth and the creepy Kevin Spacey movie, they said "no", that they needed to keep the two separate or people would get "confused" which still makes no sense.

    • @WriterusAeternus
      @WriterusAeternus 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Really depends on when a person came of age. When I was a kid the only Marvel characters in mainstream media was Spider-Man and Hulk unless you read comics you didn’t get exposed to any other comic book characters. So Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman were my superhero figures bc they were ubiquitous. Kevin Feige screens the 1978 Donner Superman film before they start each Marvel film production bc he has said they aspire to capture that same aesthetic. Honestly, Captain America is more Clark Kent than his true comic book counterpart. I appreciate Marvel movies for what they are. They’re fun. But I can’t wait for the new James Gunn Superman movie and Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part 2.
