As a Blue Oyster Cult fan, The Symbol Remains was an unexpected treat. The collection of songs on the album paint a sort of picture of band's history. It may be the last we get from Blue Oyster Cult, and if so they went out on a high note.

This album was a gift from the band to it's fans, so they would have new material to play during their shows. I think it is as good as anything they had put out over the years!
According to Buck, the vocalist on Box in My Head, this is a song about meeting someone new. We have things we keep from them until we trust them. The more we trust them, the farther into our head we allow them, opening box after box.
Glad you liked the first two tracks. I for one didn't hold my breath hoping that this would be a good album. The boys came through just like I knew they would. Richie Castellano has been an invaluable addition to the band. Agree with the poster who flagged "The Alchemist". It's epic, cinematic and Eric Bloom's vocals are captivating. Hard to believe he was in his mid-70s when he recorded the song.

Fun fact about That Was Me: Buck and Richie Castellano on guitars. Since Richie pretty much penned the song, Buck and Eric told Richie to do the solo. Kinda cool.

The skull is a box which contains the mind, which is the center of individual consciousness. To open the box is akin to freeing the contents of the the self to combine with the rest of what exists to form a complete whole, thus effecting the ascension of the soul to the infinite.
These were the first two singles released for the album. Kinda felt the same way as you. Really liked That Was Me because it rocked! Box In My Head, not as much, I think because it was a little tame. But the more I listened the more I grew to enjoy it.

Songs alright. Didn't really grab me compared to some of bands I've discovered in the last couple years, at least a dozen bands. For me many bands from other countries are kicking America's ass.
