  • Collecting requirements on a project is essential because it helps the project manager identify and determine the activities to be carried out on the project to successfully deliver the project objectives.
Ideally, each project requirement should satisfy the project objectives, when it doesn't, the project manager needs to check and verify with the project sponsor or client to verify the objective.
The process of collecting requirements occurs during the project planning phase, however, project manager's have to manage this throughout the project.
Collecting Requirements is the key to ensuring the PM deliver on the project objectives which would ultimately deliver business value.
As a Project Manager, it is your responsibility to ensure that you are clear on all the requirements for a project as it directly impacts your project scope, schedule, and budget, I can go on and on because....it impacts every aspect of the project.
In this video, I share 3 main techniques for collecting requirements using examples. You will also learn about my favorite technique and why I love using this method when collecting requirements.

WOW! Thank you for the details! So many videos I've looked at are good, but they lacked details into the job itself! I don't know, maybe because they're afraid of divulging too much client/business information?! Your video gave me a better and clearer understanding of how project management actually works--in real life situations! Thank you! Will definitely be looking at more of your videos!

Hi Ogaga, thanks for the content. I find all your videos extremely helpful and easy to digest. I have a question. I had a project management interview last week. It was to help a public institution set up this online database. I cannot go into details, but the interview was going smooth, until I was asked: "Before the work even starts, how would you communicate the needs of the business to the IT team hired to build the database." They have no terms of reference for this project, no business case, basically no documentation. The new person would have to produce those documents. So I just said: "Before we even go to the IT people, we need to have the documentation in place so they can clearly understand our vision." Do you think that was the right answer? Once again, thanks for the content!

Thank you so much for this video. I have a question? Shouldnt requirement gathering be the work of the Business Analyst on the team?
