    I worked for an outfit for a few summers and we hauled all the excess materials from the job to an abandoned gravel pit. On the side of the road about halfway into the pit there was a very similar excavator. She was covered with moss and the brush had just about hidden it. Her bottom rollers were sunk out of sight and the cab was infested with hornets. All her panels and doors were in good shape and it looked like in her day she was the pride of the fleet. I always wondered why it just got left behind, was it broke or just forgotten. Just recently I looked for it on google earth and come to find out, someone had dragged it out and had been using it. It was an unmistakable machine and you could clearly see that she had been digging. Hope she is still going and has not been turned into a Toyota.

    Remember a brand new 466D digging the hole for the sewer system on my dads street in the early 70s in Kamloops. The hydraulics were operated by rocker switches on control levers. This was common to Lorain excavators which later became a Koehring company. In my opinion that boom has been manufactured by someone else other then Koehring. The 466D was the precursor to this model E and still had the shovel undercarriage.

    That old girl will live as long as she's cared for. That's good equipment. And I believe that's called a sewer boom for deep digging.

    Long boom and short stick was for sewer and water work under wires, the air over hydraulic controls could be a pain but they were the best in the early seventies,

    So sad to see a once living machine that took time and skill to manufacture just rotting away, hope someone takes pity on the old gal and restores her, thanks for sharing.

      Good to see. Definitely a 466D I worked for Vulcan machinery and performed all service on these units. 466E were quite a step up as the e series were complete hydraulic drives no chain and cross shafts on drive this unit would have been 1970-75

    I got a question, when and why was is it industry standard to run the cab on the left and boom on the right?

      Most cars and trucks are controlled from the left seat, unless you’re in the uk, Australia or Japan. All aircraft are commanded from the left seat. Excavators are controlled from the left side too.

    That is NOT a E serie but more likely a D or whatever could be prior to that.The 466E had the fuel tank covered with the engine covers, also the counterweight was a bit shorter and higher.Still an interresting machine though.Most of the 466E had the tractor undercarriage instead of the crane like this one.Thanks a lot for sharing.

      The later 466e's also started using hydraulic pilots on the controls as well.

    • @neilwalsh87
      @neilwalsh87 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Puffie40 The D's had covers over the tank on the left side, so this would be a 466. The undercarriage track frames are also the older style.

    This machine has a sewer boom on it. They were the cats ass for doing utility work

    • @skadill
      @skadill  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What would be the working advantage it gives? Having 32 thousand hours of excavator time, I can only see it would be hard to pull any length of ground level grade with, and seems it couldn't dig anywhere near to itself. There obviously is a benefit of some type though, I'd love to learn

    • @davidrobitaille3558
      @davidrobitaille3558 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@skadill deep cuts, long reach, a standard trench box is 16 to 20 feet long. Standard short boom and short stick make it impossible to pick and pull a box without a fight. If you research Koerhing boom configurations available on all koerhing excavators you will find that the sewer boom was a popular option. I am guessing you havent much utility work experience. It is also easier to work under wires and overhead obstructions with a long boom and short stick. Also fits better height wise on a low bed.
