Good old Detroit diesels. Had a bunch in logging equipment but never had a 6v53. Should be an emergency shut off for the blower and leaving the blower tripped was a great way to deter someone who didn’t know about from “borrowing” your machine for some reason. Tip, use your bucket to lift the front of the machine when turning, makes the turns easier and less side pressure on the tracks. Great video and inspirational to get me doing my own projects.
Whenever my wife ran our Diesel car outa fuel l'd use starting fluid AND propane to run the engine long enough to get the air out. Just using a 20# propane tank from my BBQ grill and a length of rubber hose to supply propane into the same place where you were spraying starting fluid. The starting fluid would start it & the propane would sustain it. Once the air was gone and the engine would run on it's own l turned off the propane. It was very effective, didn't hurt the engine & saved a lot of work cracking lines open and saved the starter too. ben/ michigan
The 6V53 is a great engine but yes, you do have to make absolutely sure that the rack is free BEFORE starting. No amount of fuel shut off will stop a screaming jimmy when it's running away, you need to block the air intake at that stage. Pie tins, fire extinguishers, phone books, you name it, are used regularly for this purpose. You dodged a bullet here. One other common problem is the fuel crossover pipes above the valves. They have a seam that can separate over time and then leak diesel into the engine and sump, "making oil" is the term.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who would *love* a walk around! 😃 Looks like sooo many treasures hidden on the property. Enjoyed the video very much James 🔧🔩
This channel is an A+++ production. It’s always captivating. This guy has a great voice, look, subject matter, and is so entertaining. I call this a win!
I would absolutely love to check out grandpa's backyard. From even all the stuff I see in the background from the videos you have put out. It would be a wonderland of fun stuff to mess with. 😊
What an inventory of content. Most similar style content is usually not waiting like low hanging fruit. You have extremely great skills and of course your approach is so refreshing and unique . I look forward to your videos as does all that visit this channel. I stumbled upon your channel and so glad I did.
I found your channel by accident (or the gods of TH-cam decided I needed to see it), and I must say that I am enjoying your content! I appreciate your sense of humor (which in itself makes me question some of my choices), and you sure have some cool toys to play with. Which is one way of saying that I am envious, but not to worry. I am stuck in rural Alabama (which isn't saying much... Alabama has more "rural" than most states), and I don't get out much. Anyway, thanks for the entertainment. I'm really trying not to learn anything. I'm way too busy trying not to forget the stuff that I've already learned! Keep up the good work. Or just the work.
6V53 2 stroke Detroit! Good little engine. The rack WAS stuck, maybe one on the other bank you didn’t check, as they are tied together mechanically, so one stuck rack sticks them all. Luckily it freed up on its own. It runs so cool because of the blower moving so much air through the cylinders during scavenging when both the intake ports at bottom of the stroke and the exhaust valves are open to scavenge the spent gases out and replace with fresh air. That air tends to cool the cylinders. There is NO intake or exhaust stroke so it is a true 2 stroke, easily heard in the sped up parts of the clip. My username is about these engines! They like to slobber oil out of the air box drains, hence “Driptroit” 😆 They are still the best diesels ever made. All diesells should be 2 stroke, as it is best for proper diesel operation. It is indeed a strong runner!! 👍🏻😋
Alright I know exactly why the engine ran away on ya a truck I revived with a 318 did the same thing. In that segment where you tested if the rack moved, it was actually stuck, but the reason it was stuck was because the injector was stuck pushed down, which if you review the footage you can tell because the rocker wasn't touching it, that holds the rack wide open (because Detroit's default to full throttle on start up), and those injectors probably stuck because of the state of the fuel. When the engine warmed up some it broke the injectors free and that let the throttle work as intended. The only way to shut the motor off like that successfully is to cut off the air to it
That is a great machine to have available . I have had many machines with the same interior comforts. I would suggest a seven gallon bucket from your local pool supply store. Screw top lid good for snack storage and your knees will thank you. Love the mahogany ladder !!
12:15 Wouldn't it just be better to have somebody walk along side the excavator holding 60 cans of beer... er... starter fluid spraying a continuous spray of fluid into the carburetor? I mean that's what's in the user manual.
I didn't have a lot of fun today, until I watched you having fun! That was a different excavator from what I've ever seen! It has a sort of low profile, which makes me wonder it it was made for a special purpose - like maybe pruning trees? Very interesting!
I love your regular show your ingenuity never ceases to amaze me but enough of granpas back yard I understand a break every now and then but I really miss your projects.
Great machine. What a Detroit diesel experience. it's always good to open both valve covers and check for the right movement of the injectors cam with wise grips. to avoid a Detroit to runaway it's good to have another person ready to chunk air inlet with proper blocking. when a DD run away it's finished the diesel fuel and feeds itself from burning it's own engine oil. 🤣 no fuel shut of will stop it. finally Detroit's built America. and, can run forever with good hand.
To make sure the fuel rack is free you should unhook the linkage and then try to move the shaft .The racks were sticky but came free, good thing you had a fuel shutoff.
Ah it's Jimmy powered Excellent ,OMG I'm still laughing over the diesel fuel ,That 6/53 sounds good ,your having way to much fun playing up there ,playing with all this old equipment Outstanding Video
Not uncommon on 2cycle detroits to have a injector hang from sitting, a hung injector will hold the fuel rack open and cause the engine to run off. Use a pair of vice grips on the fuel rack to help control the fuel while the valve cover is off.
It's not just the fuel shutt off on those, if it leaks oil in, they can run away eating only their own oil until they are out of oil and go boom. They usually have an air flap emergency shut down
That's a true runaway situation, considering in the Fire Triangle here, the only thing left in your control (unless there's an air leak letting the air in anyways, then just hope it doesnt grenade too badly.) is the air, as the fuel part is the oil, and the ignition is compression.
*- I wish you were inspired to fix the Excavator so it wasn't an aggravation to get running and working.* *- Problem solving tutorials are good, James...leaving things to be problems later is too much for me.*
Stay away from those terminals that have the bare end clamp down. worse thing you can have on those machines. definitely will cause a meltdown. Enjoy 👍
Seeing the cab on that side of the boom always seems wrong to me. But it's good that you had better luck then I did restarting my 44k mitsubishi after 5 years of sitting. tearing seals in 1 boom and the stick hydraulic runs into real money real fast.
Dude I want a low buck tee shirt like yours, I'll even buy a used one since I'm cheap and broke too. Just give me a heads up so I can "mouth breathe only" before opening package to wash it. Seriously, I want a Low-Buck Garage tee shirt!!! C'mon, now
We had a skid steer that melted down a battery come to find out the insulation at completely rubbed off the positive cable in one spot which would intermittently cause a dead short
As a guy that makes hydraulic hoses for living, I love seeing them being abused. Keeps me employed. Great videos. New subscriber, like maybe a week. Not even sure how TH-cam put me onto your channel. Mustie1 maybe?
Woah, you almost turned it into a hotrod with that fancy custom bucket seat..! My question is though, what else have you got slumbering in those woods that we haven't seen..??? Killdozer maybe - hiding out from Clint Walker..???!!!
Here's a remedy for hornets nests. A plastic solo cup 1/4 full of gasoline. Move slowly towards the offending buggers. And place the cup of gas so it covers the nest from the bottom ( so your going from the bottom of the nest up too where it's connected on a flat surface . Push the cup up fully leaving no room for their escape. About 3-4 seconds is all it takes. The gas fumes will knock them down into the gas and death comes fast. This will kill all of them in smaller nests. Use your judgement on the size of the nest. And yes you might get stung.
C'mon TH-cam algorithm help this man out cos this is one of the most underrated channels!
Fr. I just found this channel and its sooo entertaining.

A handy piece of machinery to have around the property. It even has bucket seats!

The stuck rack self-healed without the use of a pie tin. Excellent.
What´s a pie tin?
Excellent sense of humor! Trimming trees with a 40 ton excavator..👍🤣👍

Dyed brown diesel fuel. Must be some sort of new non-taxed diesel.
That engine sounds lovely!
Your dry style of humor is great!
And of course it only starts working, when you DONT need it to anymore :D

I will say it again: Your Dad has amazing collection of fun stuff! It becomes more apparent that "like father, like son" really is accurate here!

Looks like lots of fun! I need an excavator for my yard...but somehow I think the wife would object.
your grandpa has quite a collection all kinds of good stuff
Nice running Detroit V6 engine. It sounded that it was going to run away but you controlled it. Nice excavator. Alol the hydraulics seem to work well.
Something you can do easily to stop rust from going through the fuel system it to put a magnet or magnets in the tank to trap the rust !

Love the custom bucket seat
That must have cost a shiny nickel
Your family has got some nice old MB's in there. and Yeah.. of course all the other old diesels is amazing
The bucket addition was great.

Vise grips on the control tube is pointless. Fix the emergency shut-down.

You have a great attitude. Plus you remind me of a college professor. Great channel with great videos. Best wishes.
I think you should make an episode of getting that unearthed Chevy small blocked to start.

That was once a lovely excavator.
In a pinch, brake cleaner works great on wasps too. Drops them mid-flight!
It has good range too. You can zap them from a comfortable standoff distance.
Im from Maine and it looks like you're somewhere in New England ? Usually the background looks like New Mexico .. Am I losing it !
For a bit of the summer I go up to my parent's place in CT and do some work up there. Its way too hot in the desert to get anything done there!
