  • Charging your Tesla Model 3 at home with a standard UK 3 pin plug has been my primary method of charging for the last 4 weeks. Is it actually a viable option long term?
Buying a Tesla? DO NOT forget to go via a referral link for 1,000 free supercharger miles. Here's mine ;) ts.la/jonathan34206
Let's be honest, we all love the UK 3 pin plug, but how useful is it when it comes to charging your Tesla? I'm looking at the pros, the cons, and the maths if you want to keep your charging properly old school.

Kitchen is the worst place to use. Kettle is OK, but kettle plus toaster will exceed the limits of a single ring.

This is definitely a good option if an outside charger is impractical or not cost-effective. I charged like this for several months and, since I don't have a regular commute, the charge was always sufficient for the next day. I do now have a 7.5 kWh charger installed. There's the cost of electricity to consider. I use the Octopus GO tariff which enables four hours of night-time charging (between 12.30 and 4.30 am) at a reduced 5p per kWh. So it pays to push in as much power as possible during those hours (my standard rate is 13.96p/kWH). With a start-charge time of 12.30 and an 80% ceiling, my car theoretically loads 30 kWH from the 7.5 kWH charger in those four hours. That's £1.50 for about 100-120 miles of driving. Most times it stops charging before the tariff change because the battery has reached the specified level. That's more than enough for me. However, the 13-amp socket route is still a good contender. You just need to do the maths. Good informative video, by the way.

I found your video very helpful indeed. I’d like to get an Audi e tron but my house electric is on a loop with 3 others so that would mean un looping all the houses, very expensive and I don’t think the neighbours will be up for it! So top up charging would be great for me once the car is at a 100% I’ve googled public charges near me but only 3 come up and I’m sure that can’t be right, there must be another way of finding them! Anyway, like I said this was very helpful as everyone says you shouldn’t use the 3 pin plug as they aren’t safe! Thanks again for the video that I’m sure has helped lots more than just me. Cheers….

Had no idea that a commando charger could offer the same speeds as a dedicated wall charger. Great insight! As the Tesla lets you choose when the charging takes place the same way a ‘smart’ wall charger can, I’ve often thought it seemed like overkill to have two devices capable of doing that. I guess the only other benefit of a tethered charger (assuming you haven’t got a huge solar array capable of funnelling charge to your car) would be having to connect/pack away your cables after charging…but still it’s another opportunity to save.

    • @rhiantaylor3446

I went down the Commando route to minimise the cost of providing a charging capability at 3 locations - 1x 7kw adapter cable and the three locations just needed the dedicated 32a Commando feed installed which cost a lot less than a dedicated EV charge point.

I recently bought a Zoe and was a little surprised that the efficiency of charging varies quite a lot with the power available. So charging at 32 amps or around 7.5kw is about 90% efficient for me i.e. when comparing the power you pay for and the charge left in the battery. Using a "granny cable" however at 10 amps you only get about 1.5kw and not the 2.3kw you might expect or the 2kw you saw for your Tesla. This is because the Zoe's internal charger carries a fixed overhead and is only about 65% efficient with the granny cable as compared to your Tesla which was 87% efficient. Something you might want to check before buying your car if you intend to use a granny cable a lot.

So technically the cable should stay locked to the charge port - however, I have read about situations where people have managed to get it out via either brute force or some other method so it's not completely theft-proof. I charged my previous EV in numerous places - hotels, B&Bs, parents' house etc - many many times over 5 years and never had a problem. It had a 70-mile range, so leaving a B&B in the morning fully charged was a real asset! But it's worth knowing that problems *can* occur and being cautious. You're adding several extra connections, and they need to support 10+ amps for a very extended period. You need a good extension lead: don't buy the cheapest, make sure it has a high current rating. Make sure all the connections are firm (and waterproof if relevant), and *make sure it's fully uncoiled*. It should work fine for occasional use, on holidays etc... but I'd be hesitant about doing it regularly. Also, if the wiring of the socket doesn't look great -- I've plugged into single spurs in people's garages, for example -- it would make sense to turn the current down. And then check everything after the first couple of hours - are any of the plugs getting hot? It's not unusual for them to be slightly warm, but there are also plenty of images on the net of completely burned out plugs. As long as you're sensible and cautious, extension leads should be just fine, but use at your own risk! Commando-type connectors and extension leads will generally be much better if they're an option.

why limit to 10amps? Have you tripped it as most sockets will take 13amp without issue

Tesla limit it to 10A to protect the house circuit, eg in case you plug it in to a double socket next to another appliance, and it is a constant draw on the system for a long period of time. this allows the cables in the house to not over heat/wear out overtime.

I think I'll stick to hybrid. The charging on electric cars is not practical enough for most to change. Ues your saving on fuel but at what cost?

I'm surprised you didn't mention the potential hazards with using a standard 3 pin socket. You don't have pen fault protection, DC leakage protection and can overheat a standard internal 3 pin socket with prolonged use. Also I have to mention that I had to turn the sound off on the video and use captions because your background music was WAY to loud in the mix. I really struggled to focus on what you were saying.

No refference to electrical safety, only cost.
3 pin (granny charging) is only recommended for charging now and again, and not for constant use. It is the equivalent of having your kettle switched on for 10 plus hrs a day/night. The 13A socket can take 10A, but can lead to a premature breakdown if constantly under a consistant high load. Please do not reply saying you have done this for x amount of years and all is ok. Its like saying youve been driving without a seatbelt for x amount of years and you are still alive. Your EV manufacturer normally cover themselves with granny charging, stating that it is for occasional use (i.e. top ups at the office, or an air bnb etc).
There is also other protection that is required when charging a car, such as 6ma dc leakage protection, type A RCD (most existing rcds are AC that will not work if DC is present) and PEN fault detection or an earth rod. House sockets generally wont have any of this, which can ultimately lead to an electrical shock.
Price is regardless, youve probably just spent 40k+ on an EV. 600-1200 for an installed point should be nothing in comparison.

The thing we have to look out for is the government is not charging tax on this electicity apart from a tiny bit of VAT. At this moments high electricity price it's Tesla 8 pence per mile and diesel 12 pence if my sums are right. Personally I would prefer the tax was added to the MOT cost where millage is checked. 3 years of not paying would be fun for the first years. Never forget that the Tesla is cheaper to run due to this trick. This won't last. 10 amps is a rather old fashioned charge rate for 13 amps. Probably wise not to make it more. If your charger fails check the 13 amp fuse as a charger is a tough load. I have great doubts that we will have enough electricity to go fully electric. That's fine if we are allowed to use our diesel and petrol cars up to scrapage. As things stand only nuclear could fill the needs. Bad as it is that's the best. Gas is unrelaible even if we accept to do that. Guess what. It won't make a scrap of difference to climate change because China, USA and India can not move fast enough. Not that they don't want to, they just can't. Glad to be wrong on that.

I appreciate the effort it took to make this video, but why did you make it? if you can afford a Tesla model 3 at 40K it is frankly silly not to install a 7 kW charger for a few hundred pounds.

WHAT IF I WANT TO USE THE CAR IN THE EVENING INTO THE EARLY HOURS AND THEN I NEED IT FIRST THING IN THE MORNING.... NO THANKS, I'LL STICK WITH MY ICE AND WATCH THE TV SHOWING ALL THE CARBON BEING RELEASED INTO THE ATMOSPHERE FROM ALL THOSE WILD FIRES AROUND THE WORLD

you shouldn't be using a domestic socket to charge an electric car, its for emergency use only.....having that drawing that much current for 10 hours is dangerous and could not only short out your board but could easily overheat and catch fire.....totally irresponsible to even suggest people do this

OK Informative vid BUT not entirely accurate. '10A maximum you will get from a UK 3 pin plug'??? UHH NO! If that were the case then your electric cooker, hot plates and oven would burn your standard 13A wiring out. A cooker plate with a 3 pin socket gives out up to 30Amps IF wired correctly (and do remember that in the UK ALL and ANY modifications must be carried out by a qualified electrician or electrical engineer. ) 👀SO that 30A socket is wired as is the unit from power delivered from the main power supply to it along a cable capable of supplying up to the fuse rating, generally 30A. THUS I suspect if you have one of those as you appear to be charging from the kitchen, then surely adjusting the charging rate on the Tesla control point it would charge faster? 👀I'm not knocking how you show it can be charged at a lower rate I am merely stating what is FACT re that 30A supply HOWEVER, some places have GAS installations and cookers etc and NO 30A supplied units etc. So that would not apply. Personally I suspect many people will have a 30A supply wired to their garage for the EV charging point and that in itself would not be too expensive. ? 👀Lastly, a standard what we in the UK call a 'ring circuit' is subject to whatever is plugged into that circuit that is drawing power from it? That will increase the load on the main 'ring circuit' as will the charging of your Tesla and certainly IF it is drawing 10A? That's a heck of a lot of power putting a strain on a circuit that may already be taking amps from a heater, electric kettle, dual electric cooker rings.. etc That ALSO applies if you plug it into the 30A supply 👀IF you have the cooker working and drawing x Amps plus the rings on PLUS PLUS more Amps HOWEVER a 10A charge to your Tesla in that case would probably be safer than taking it off the 'ring main'. You would do yourself a bigger favour by taking the power IF you insist on using a 'ring circuit' from the upstairs socket as this is often on a separate 'ring circuit' of its own. Many 'ring circuits' cater for up to 15A though plugs of course are rated 13A AND do remember that the FUSE contained in the 13A plugs is rated correctly. There are 3A, 5A, 10A and 13A ones in circulation. An electric cooker with 4 ceramic hob unit on full power can easily take up to 15A of power. If you want to charge your EV at home invest in having the power supply upgrade to your ie garage etc. Long term it will be well worth the money?👀
