Preload explaination could be clearer.
"Firm and soft" generally relate to spring rate.
Preload adjusts sag and ride height, also effecting front end geometry.
More preload when you add weight to the rear reduces bottoming out and corrects the steering rake, maintaining handling

The OEM shock does have preload adjustment though.
