    I think you may have forgotten to mention that even though Retinol requires two steps to convert - as compared to retinaldehyde, which requires only one -, Retinol still manages to be more irritating due to it being in an alcohol form. A lot of people actually forget this. In fact, studies have shown retinaldehyde to be 11× more effective than Retinol, but with less irritation.
    Nonetheless, love the video and, as always, love your humour

      My dermatologist recommended an antibiotic topical cream with adapalene (0.1%) and clindamycin (1%). I expected some of these symptoms which Cassandra is talking about to develop but didn't happen. So does that mean my skin has accepted it without any irritation?

      I'm not finding any source that makes this claim about Retinol being more irritating than Retinaldehyde due to it being in an "alcohol form". I think you're equating Retinol with Ethanol or denatured alcohol thinking that because they're both chemically classified as alcohols that they'd have the same effect on the skin? This really isn't the case. To your point though, some cosmetics will add alcohol to a retinol product because alcohol itself can enhance skin penetration for things like retinol or vitamin C and that can lead to skin irritation. As far as I've been able to find, Retinaldehyde has more potential for irritation than Retinol just because of potency. If you can find a source refuting this I'd love to see it, but I can't find anything.

    I just got my first retinoid, so this is perfect timing! I finally found ONE product, ONE singular product, that doesn't have high coconut derivative concentrations. IDK how it'll lay well, but I tried giving my skin a break from the AHAs and BHAs on the days and doing the whole skin cycling thing that's trendy right now, but my skin breaks out any time I skip even one day of AHA/BHA. I've decided to just go all in and do everything at once...benzoyl wash, AHA/BHA cica gel, and retinoid on my smile lines and other dynamic lines over top of everything. So far, much better than trying to "be gentle". Still dealing with dryness and flaking from long before I started a retinoid but I can't find a thicker moisturizer that isn't coconut based. Sadness.

    Started using Adapalene 3 weeks ago. Used a pea sized amount every night without issue until… Over the last week I began to see dryness and small bumps around my mouth. Initially I researched moisturizers. The condition didn’t improve with moisturizer. In fact it worsened to the point that my skin became unable to handle any topicals. Burning, stinging, itching and redness. My skin was on fire. The only thing that soothed my face was vaseline but it wasn’t clearing up. The answer was metronidazole. This prescription is used to treat rosacea. I never see it referenced in treating retinol rash but it worked for me.

    I have very dry and sensitive skin with rosacea. I've experimented with retinol, specifically the Paula's Choice 1% Retinol Treatment a couple of nights a week. I was being cautious because of my rosacea and sensitivity. I've read differing opinions as to whether or not people with rosacea should use retinol. I can't say that I saw an enormous improvement in my skin, but again, I was only using it a couple of nights a week.
    I didn't have problems with this product, probably because I was using it so seldom. But, since I've used it up, I'm going to order another one with a lower concentration of retinol and use it more often.

    I really love Medik8 Crystal Retinal, it makes my skin look amazing and smooth without any irritation. Unfortunately I had bad experience with Beauty Pie Super Retinol + Vitamin C, it made my skin crazily oily and made me break out in very painful cysts. I thought it was purging, but in 1 month it only got worse. I think maybe my skin does not like shea butter in it. So I had to stop using it, and then I tried Medik 8 which helped my skin to recover from that disaster

I rest from my vitamin C and retinal cream and wait until my redness is gone and slowly reintroduce my old routine from 3days difference up to the current old routine of vitamin C routine in the day and retinal routine at night. Thank you for this great video. Can you tell me what tret or retinol can be used combined with other products? I've read an article that says that Benzoyl peroxide and alpha hydroxy acids can deactivate certain retinoids such as tretinoin. How do I combine Vit A, Vit C, benzoyl perroxide and acids into my skincare?

    • @morgianasartre6709
      @morgianasartre6709 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only reason you might want to be careful about combining retinoids with aha/bha or vit C is the potential for irritation, which obviously is higher when you combine potent actives. How to use it in a routine is also influenced by the particular products you use and their concentrations. The only real one you shouldn't combine with retinoids is benzoyl peroxide (except if you are using adapalene) as it's mechanism of action is oxidising stuff, which would render most retinoids forms ineffective (also as a result should not be paired with antioxidants like vit C, niacinamide etc.).

    • @DeannasWorld
      @DeannasWorld 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@morgianasartre6709 thank you so much for your reply. So just avoid using benzoyl peroxide and vit A together, but other combos based on potential irritation and skin sensitivity, yeah?

    • @morgianasartre6709
      @morgianasartre6709 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DeannasWorld Yes, if you decide to layer actives then it would also be best to wait a bit in between them. For example what I do is, if I use aha and retinol in my pm routine together, I do my routine earlier in the evening, start with an aha, give it some time to work (at least some 10 min, but usually it ends up being an hour or more) and apply my retinoid before going to bed.

    I think if I use tiiiiiiny amounts with cream.... it should work. It cleared my skin ... but switched pimples with big red scaly patches! Dafaq!

I make sure I know what the brand stands for and only then do I invest. I save money, promote healthy practices and I have better skin than I have had in my years. I am eczema and acne prone. I personally think the ordinary's retinol in squalane 0.5% is slightly more gentle than granactive retinoid 2%. That said, yesterday I had some retinization start around the corners of my mouth so I just preemptively switched my moisturizer to smn a bit heavier. I usually use the byoma moisturizing gel cream but I needed smn heavier so I am now temporarily using the Pacifica triple ceramide cream. The area that was starting to get a rash is still dryer than the rest of my face but it has chilled out a lot so I think I’m in the clear now for the rest of the adjustment period.

    Hi Cassandra!!! I hope you respond 😅
    What do you think about the brand naturium? I find that it’s very affordable and effective for my skin SO FAR, I really want to try either there retinaldahyde or the retinol CREAM. Because I think it’ll be gentler on my skin because I have really sensitive skin. And I tried the cerave retinol and oh god it was really bad. So I want to know what you think about naturium.

    I've been using tretinoin for over a year now. But the flakes!!!! I heard that urea is good for it but it is generally formulated into dry skin moisturizers. I have oily dehydrated combination skin (which I recently found out because I was having fine lines in my twenties), so I'm having a lot of trouble finding ceramides and urea in the same formula that's suitable for combination skin yet repairing enough. I throw on so much humectants, and a dry skin moisturizers. To find that dry skin moisturizers it's suitable for my skin and I break out. I live in South East Asia, near the equator so dry skin moisturizers are suffocating. And the only few I found have urea is sukoyaka suhada and naturekind. Please for the love of God, someone create something lightweight for combination dehydrated skin which contains urea.

      Try looking for moisturizers that is hyaluronic acid based. MOISTURIZERS, not serums or toners, because moisturizers often include dimethicones or mineral oil or other plant oils or cetyl alcohol as an occlusive or emollient that helps seal in the water and stop it from evaporating. I recommend the one from Missha the kbeauty brand.

    I’m using a retinal right now from Geek and Gorgeous and while I’ve gotten rid of most of the dryness thanks to a cream from Pyungkang, I still have what I suspect is either contact dermatitis or a retinal rash on the upper sides of my face and some on my cheeks - I admittedly probably used way too much for a while and am trying to use a lot less now.
    Regarding petroleum jelly, wouldn’t that be hard to wash off in the morning or clog your sink…?

    Dermatologists or skin care nerds please give any advice you can.
    I’ve extremely sensitive very acne prone / eczema skin… no matter what skin care I’ve tried from cheap to expensive to what’s highly recommend to the hidden gems in skin care that work for people. My skin will either react badly and be left worse or it’ll do nothing. Even products for overly sensitive skin ruin my skin are usually the ones that ruin my skin the worst…. I can’t use anything outside my hydrating Vichy cleanser and my tony moly green tea toner… an usually they don’t keep my skin from stressing out again. I’ve tried different diets even gave up chocolate & even tried vitamin c & d that didn’t fix or help either… Any help would be great.

      Hi! I have acne prone skin, very oily and autoimmune disease which means I get rashes all over my body including the face. At the moment I use the inkey list products, the ordinary and some k beauty brands. Glow recipe is actually an amazing brand for sensitive skin, I kind of started with their products, back when they only had the watermelo line and it was great for my sensitive skin. Over time I built resilience and now I can even use the ordinary aha bha peeling solution which is potent af. With the inkey list I actually used their questionnaire and built a routine based on that. The only thing that makes difference is consistency. I got into skincare in 2019 and bought a lot of products since then. Some were awful, some were great. I can’t recommend Glow Recipe and The Inkey List enough. Both make amazing products and it’s worth the money. Let me know if you want specific product recommendations.

      Hi Mate, I had the same problem. I used to use Facetheory 3% retinol serum 2 times per week, then 3 per week, every other night, and then every night. When I finished that course I ordered the Ordinary 1% in squalane. I received the product
      1 week later. I started using retinol every night. On the 2nd day itself, I felt burning, itching, and excessive dryness. I didn't care I continued using it for 2 more days. When I came to know about retinol rash/ retinol burn. I stopped using it. My last usage was on last Monday night. Tuesday morning after face washing I applied coconut oil on my face and left it for an entire day. At night after face washing I applied regular moisturizer. On Wednesday morning after face washing, I applied moisturizer and sunscreen (which contains Niacinamide). At night I put on moisturizer after face washing. I continue following these steps now. The itchiness stopped Tuesday itself (I think coconut worked). The burning sensation remained till Thursday morning. Today (Friday) I don't have itchiness or a burning feeling. But I do have dryness.
      My skin is healing. I can start using retinol again with a 2-per-week routine from Sunday/Monday onwards.
      I would say stop using retinol for till your skin heal.

      This is just an idea, but I personally notice more irritation with over the counter retinols/retinal, but my skin adores tretinoin. I would see if you can get a tretinoin microsphere from your doctor! Its a gentle, encapsulated/time release form of tret. A cream form is honestly ok too. I layer mine over a hydrating or cream skin essence & then double moisturize with a thick cream and then the naturium overnight sleeping cream & get no irritation, even with my rosacea. Just an idea! I hope you find something that works!
