    I'm a tech nerd so I'm subscribed to Newegg and LinusTechTips. I thought this was a Newegg video...and then I was like what, Dave has news on this too?! And you're with JJ from ASUS! He's an awesome guy.
    Were you under NDA until August 29th? :P

    I read on your blog post Dave that you don't like getting anything for free and gave the difference to charity (awesome man) but don't feel weird about this. JJ is well known in the PC community and companies give product away ALL the time to TH-cam reviewers. This is a great promotion for both you and Asus. JJ is currently making the rounds promoting the X99 platform and as you found out is a stand up guy! Can't wait to see some benchmarks on this beast, well deserved Dave!

      Hey JJ, great build on this video. I now challenge you to build the best and most affordable content creation computer that runs Adobe Creative Suite for around $1300. A lot of us in the business are moving towards Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing and also want something that can handle 4K editing but can still be affordable and it doesn't have to be a monster like this one that you built. Getting a good system thats about $1300 well thats a real world challenge for us, but I'm sure you can do it!

    My Cinebench r15 results with the 5960x were off the charts at around 1650 CPU. I'm pretty sure I was over 1700 overclocked at 4Ghz on one test
    Despite the great results on Cinebench, I saw between 5-10% improvement over my Mac Pro 6 Core 3.5Ghz when doing real world video processing. The PC had 16 GB more ram for a total of 32GB DDR4 at the time of testing.
    On the noise:
    I tried sticking the PC in the closet to make my room quiet, but I could still hear this thing clearly. I've built my share of quiet PCs for DAWs and if you've never owned the new Mac Pro, you have no idea what it's like to work in an environment with almost no audible computer sound. These things are amazing! This is really important when you are recording live sound without a dedicated sound room that is separate from the computer room.
    I sent the PC back to Newegg. It was fun to test out and revisit the days of building DAWs for PCs , but they are still behind Apple when it comes to functionality, design, and OS.
    I purchased my Mac Pro 6 Core 3.5 Ghz 16GB on ebay for 3999.00. It came with a 27" Thunderbolt Display that sells for 999.00. I upgraded the ram to 32GB through Newegg with Crucial matched pair 16GB for around $340. The PC cost 2700.00 after taxes from Newegg. If I bought the same computer from iBuyPower it would have been over $3k. Newegg sells it for a few hundred less in a promo that has run out of supply. The same system built by iBuypower was around $3.3k using the Asus Extreme motherboard.
    So for about the same price of $3k , you get 5-10% better processing power with the PC for video processing in my real world results. You get a better OS and better expansion capabilities with the Mac Pro with 6 Thunderbolt and 4 USB 3.0 ports as well as 2 Ethernet and an HDMI port. You get a super quiet computer in the Mac Pro with a beautiful design and light weight.
    You will have to decide if the few extra seconds of video processing time is worth putting up with a big blocky leaf blower in your work space.
    Seamless integration with iPhone and iPad and all other Mac devices through iCloud makes the Mac Pro a clear winner for me.
    Say no to Spyware, Adware, and Viruses! :)

    I used a more budget friendly build with the 5820K, 32gb DDR4,GTX 1060 Founders Edition GPU, Crucial MX300 256GB SSD boot drive, 2 1TB Raptor 10K HDD's in RAID 0 for storage and a X99 MB by Gigabyte. My system is pretty fast. I have my CPU over clocked to 4.3GHZ. So far it has been a good system for what I use it for. I will be getting the i7 6900K in the near future. It is fun building a PC and I am surprised that more people don't build their own.

    Actually, the Mac Pro is not based on X79 but instead on the Xeon Professional Plattform. While he is right that it utilises the Hasewell Architecture, I would like to stress that the Mac Pro has Error Corrected Memory, Extra Commands in the CPU and Professional Grade GPUs (And Dual GPUs as Standard). For some applications you need these type of components (Medical, Computer aided Design, Simulation work, mission critical video editing) But the home user does generally not require this.
    Great system you build there! (Had to be said as well)

    Radiators clog quickly so be sure to clean it regularly. With a pull config on the radiator, it can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner hose attachment within around 5 seconds. A thin layer of dust can cause temperatures to climb by around 5-8C, e.g., here is what it takes to cause that on my kraken x40 i.imgur.com/1DUmKTl.jpg (pull config exhausting from the case)
    Do not get rid of the old system yet, these early release boards are having a large number of stability issues, and both asus and evga have been releasing a ton of updates very frequently to fix them, so early adopters will likely run into some stability issues, especially when memory overclocking for a while before they are all fixed.
    The hardware is pretty solid, most of the issues seem to be related to intel rushing that release of their new CPU's

    Thanx for this video!
    Do the 4 extra cores allow you to stack more effects in Premiere with 4K video (Panasonic Gh4) and still have smooth realtime playback in full resolution?
    On a 4790K 4-core at 4.5 Ghz with 32gb RAM and a GTX780, the full resolution realtime playback is on its limits when final color grades are applied. I'm talking about per-clip adjustments in brightness, contrast and color and then nesting the sequence into another sequence and adding final overal color and titles.
    I know premiere will benefit from more cores during rendering, but what about the realtime preview?

  • @Terranscapes

    Umm, whoah. As a non-techie I understand about 10% of what is going on in that build, but I can at least tell that it's going to be an insane PC. The air flow to cool it alone says something. I assume you'll be running AC in that room to compensate? :) Even your last build was over my head, and would completely crush my current PC. (I won't tell you what I am running since it would be embarrassing. **grin**) 25 years ago I felt like I had a handle on hardware. Ahhh. How times have changed.
    I was wondering if you could cover/recommend an off the shelf PC, or one that could have a minor tweak added, that would be a solid pc for less power-driven video makers; video editors who aren't moving to 4k in the near future for instance. :) Something in $1500 - $1800 range, preferrably on the lower side, that is plug and play would be great. However, if that kind of content isn't your cup of tea (no problem), then perhaps a recommend to a solid info source?
    I really appreciate your channel. Even when I'm lost, which is not too often, your approach to content is so well constructed that it's a pleasure to watch.

      ***** Personally, I would suggest building your own, and there is a great community for that over at reddit.com/r/buildapc. As for parts I would recommend, as JJ, said, a Nvidia GTX 760 Graphic Card, and an Intel Core i7 4790 CPU. Just head over to Reddit.com/r/BuildAPC with those two parts, say you want to build a video editing rig, ask some questions, and they can guide you through the daunting, yet easy, process of building your own PC. Good luck!

    Another great video Doug. I'm planning my next PC build already. The only question I have is about airflow. Since hot air rises, doesn't it make more sense to push in cool air through the bottom and exhaust it from the top? This would be working with the natural physical properties of air, vs. against it.

    The crucial ram used here, it's two sets of 32gb ddr4 right? I ordered two of the crucial 2133 ddr4 4x8gb kits and it looks like that is what jayjay put in your system. Is that correct? If so, how is it working so far? I want to be sure there won't be compatibility issues between them.

    I have both the new Mac Pro 6 Core Xeon 3.5Ghz with 16GB ram and the new Beast i7 5960X (water-cooled) , 32 GB DDR4 and Geforce GTX 760 2GB. They are both connected to a new Samsung 55" Ultra HDTV 4k curved monitor. I agree with most here that OSX is a better OS to work in but when it comes to pure power, this new i7 5960 is in a class of its own. The Mac Pro doesn't even compare in processing power for most graphic needs. I'm running a high level surveillance system with 3-5 MP cams at 10-30 FPS each streaming MJPEG and H264.
    On an iMac Core Duo 2.8Ghz Extreme the 5MP cams would take up to 30% of CPU each which limited how many of these high MP cams I could run. A Mac Mini 2.3Ghz 4 core can run between 10-12 high MP cams. The Mac Pro can run an Axis M3007P 5MP at full resolution in Sighthound software between 5-6% CPU utilization. There was no speeding up of fans when I had 5 of these cams hooked up and utilized around 13% of CPU.
    When I connected this same cam to the i7 5960X computer, it was like it wasn't even connected and used less than 1% of CPU. That is crazy power! I'm pretty sure I could run 60-100 cams between 3-5 MP (depending on bit rate). With 3 of these 5 MP cams connected I'm at between 2.5-3% CPU. This thing is an animal!
    Driving this 55" Ultra HDTV the PC definitely has the better graphics being able to run at full 4k resolution. This monitor is not optimized to run on the Mac Pro and OSX 10.9 finally addressed some issues with the Mac Pro and Samsung Ultra HDTV 4k. Hopefully there will be better support with different resolutions at 60Hz. I'm connected via HDMI right now at 30Hz which isn't too bad actually. I still love the Mac Pro. Super quiet and expandable externally to your hearts desire. It's hard to beat OSX!

    Assuming all other components were the same in a potential build of my own, is there a happy medium GPU card I should look for to work with the latest version of Vegas Pro? I dont want to overspend for throughput that simply goes to waste in terms of video editing/rendering. I spent most of my time using Vegas, AI, ID, PS, LR, and AE. But I do want to run a pair of your 27 inch Pro Art monitors for my layouts.

    Hi Dave. Can you talk about how you store all of your files? I would imagine you have massive amounts of raw data. Do you keep it all? And how do you plan to grow storage as your storage needs grow?

    How are your harddisks set up and which ports on the motherboard you are use for each? Any thunderbolt drives?
    Thanks for the sharing.

    He wasn't entirely correct about the MacPro. There are some definite advantages, aside from the HUGE advantage of Mac OS X (which is far superior to Windows). The first is Xeon CPUs, with up to 24 cores, the second is ECC memory (error correcting code), the third is professional-level GPUs designed for the type of work you are doing here, Dave. The Nvidia consumer-level gaming cards cripple their dual-precision math (in an effort to sell more of their workstation-level cards). They only run at about 1/8th of the speed when you need DP (dual precision). The MacPro has AMD Fire Pro cards, which are workstation cards without the hindrance for DP.
    Everything else he said was spot-on though. For whatever reason, Apple tends to use last-generation hardware, so if you want the latest and greatest, you'll need to stay away from Apple. That being said, if you are doing a lot of GPU crunching, the Fire Pro cards will blow the GTX 780 Ti out of the water *and* you can get multiple cards in a single Mac Pro. The Mac Pro is designed from the ground-up to be a workstation-class computer, for video editors, photo editors and other professionals who need insane number-crunching power.
    If you haven't tried OS X, you really should. It's brilliant. Once you use it, you'll never be able to go back to Windows though. I run OS X on all my computers, except for my server, which runs Linux. I even made a "Hackintosh" a while back, which was slightly maddening to get running, but AMAZING because I have hardware which would have cost me about $8500 to get in a Mac Pro (cost me a little over $3500 to build about a year and a half ago). I love my MacBook Pro with Retina screen too, the colors are so vivid and it was almost perfectly accurate from the factory. I've had laptops from Alienware and Asus in the past, but they were nowhere near the MBP in terms of screen resolution and clarity.

      And you are not entirely complete in your post, either. NVidia makes workstation class GPUs as well, their Quadro line, which was just updated with new models. From what I've read, Adobe's apps are optimized for NVidia tech, not AMD. YMMV.

    • @srobart
      @srobart 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      genjii931 Indeed, Nvidia makes some amazing workstation cards too. I've used both AMD and Nvidia cards in my macs over the years and both work really well. If you don't go for one of the Quadro or Tesla cards from Nvidia, your double-precision performance is SEVERELY hampered (from 1/8th to 1/24th the single-precision performance). That being said, not all apps take advantage of DP, so that may not be an issue for some people, so the regular desktop/consumer line might be fine, from either maker.
      What's lacking with AMD, in my opinion, is driver support. They've only released 2 drivers all year, while Nvidia has released a number of driver updates. If you are making a Hackintosh, it's best to stick with Nvidia, though, as the AMD GPUs really don't work that well. Of course I believe Dave's question was about the Mac Pro, so what works on a Hackintosh is really irrelevant.
      If I had Dave's computer, I'd definitely install OS X on it though. I'm currently running OS X on my Core i7 980x system and it FLIES. It's so nice to be able to move from my laptop (a "real" Apple computer, MacBook Pro Retina) to desktop and have the same OS, apps and setup. Even though the 980x is several generations old, it still blows my new MBP out of the water on everything it does.
      I haven't tried running an AMD GPU with Adobe's apps on the mac, but when I was running windows, the AMD/ATI cards worked just fine with Adobe's software. All of my Nvidia GPUs work flawlessly with the adobe applications, FCPX and a myriad of other video/photo apps as well.

      I've used several distributions of Linux, MacOS and Windows over the years.
      All of those operating systems have their up and downsides.
      If you think one OS is vastly superior, it is mostly based on your personal preferences.
      Also - If you have established a good workflow for any given task, it's not reasonable to start from scratch again.

    • @genjii931
      @genjii931 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RedHotBagel Agreed.

    • @srobart
      @srobart 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      RedHotBagel I, too, have used many operating systems throughout the years and that's why I can confidently say that OS X is the best, especially for a working videographer or photographer. Perhaps it's not the best for an accountant or someone who deals with spreadsheets all day, but I really wasn't referring to those type of people in the message. I currently use Mac OS X and Linux at home and I've used windows for many years too, just not currently.
      The workflow is almost identical between Mac and Windows when it comes to Premiere, which is the main application that Dave uses (with Resolve for grading, which is also available on OS X). The only real "switch" would be the close-window/minimize/maximize buttons on the opposite side of the screen. I am a photographer who dabbles in videography, the adobe apps are identical on mac and windows, I can transfer between them seamlessly.

    9:07 Why would you fight the natural direction of airflow? Heat rises, wouldn't it be better to have the top vents as out-take?

    • @BlueTheRage
      @BlueTheRage 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ucheucheuche The idea is bringing cool air in from the outside over the radiators, its better for cooling the CPU if you have a hot running system within the case like a non-reference design graphics card which just expels most of its heat into your case instead of out the back, those cards get to like 70-80c and all that heat is going right into your case, if you have really good case airflow you can do it the other way around. I have an R9 Fury X with the CLC blowing all its hot air out the back of the case so my temps in my system are always ambient and I have my CPU radiator blowing air out the top of my case as well.

    I would have stuck with your current Fractal Design case instead of that nzxt. They're better engineered in my opinion and have generally better airflow

    How about showing us how to build a laptop with HDMI (input/output) with 4K Bluray Burner/Player & a long battery life?
    All laptops and many computers DO NOT have HDMI with INPUT, they are have output only.
    Whereas all TVs have HDMI (input only).

    A lot of stuff that JJ said about the Mac pro is completely wrong. The highest memory kit for the mac pro is around $1000 from apple. Also it offers way more thunderbolt ports. It offers way more upgradibility. The WS graphics are superior to consumer graphics. And the CPU can go up to 12 cores instead of just 8. Also they are xeons, so they have support for ECC RAM, so in all, the mac pro is not "outdated."

    Hi,
    I'm setting up my PC and I have got X99 Deluxe, 2 X 1 TB HDD for Scratch disk, 4 X 2 TB HDD for Media Storage.
    I have Installed Windows 10 Pro in a SSD 250GB. I want to have the SSD safe as a booting disk.
    I need to know how I can create a RAID 0 on 2 x 1TB HDD for scratch disk.
    And 4 x 2TB HDDs for RAID 10.
    And which ports to use to connect each of these drives. Thanks in advance

    Awesome guys. You really helped me chose my new rig. Kudos Dave & JJ
    No gaming..just content creation so I'll probably go for the same Mobo (as I'm waiting on a good review of the Sabertooth) and CPU, an EVGA Supernova 850 G2 PSU, GSkill 32GB 3200mhz and Corsair H105 push pull on top, which still leaves me looking around for a case that would support that thick rad and best price to performance GPU. (No overclocking) Any help very much appreciated. Would love to see an X99 Sabertooth review.
