    Just to clarify 15:42 +10 would actually be +0.010v not +0.10v otherwise he would load up to 1.397v! Love ya Paul!

      I prefer to use either Manual or Adaptive mode as it lets me just Google safe voltages instead of looking at both those and the stock VCore.

    "Adjusting this value is overclocking and may require other adjustments to STABALIZE." - nice spell check EVGA BIOS writers!! :) Nice vid Paul. I'm getting a 5930K in a somewhat cooling-limited configuration (120mm AIO water cooling only), but I am hoping to get to 4.5 GHz stable.

    8:00 the "turbo switch" MCU Turbo is lit when on is deceptive as it is intended to force lower voltages via hardware meant for extreme o/c. IE: On so you can boot then when up and running turn up to crazy land. So, leave it set with light OFF or you will have a slow system that you will not figure out thinking you are in "Turbo Mode."

    This is a thrilling overclock video. Not much fuss to get an 8 core CPU to 4.7+ Ghz? I can't wait to see the world record on the guy who wins the silicon lottery.

    Could you try spreading out the thermal paste instead of using the pea method (as you showed on the last ALT-TAB show)? From what I understand from Logan's presentation (Logan from Tek Syndicate showed us a graphic), all of the cores surround the cache on the die on the 5960X; the pea method might not be reaching all of the cores.

    Like the video. You should attempt to do the same testing to the other 2 processors as you did with this one. Plus, you should do long videos like this. Pretty informative, plus it gives a sneak peek into the future of X99.

  • @Aint1S

    You should be able to adjust the mem timings by disabling your XMP profile and configuring your memory manually...
    XMP is a little different from the secondary JEDEC alternatives that the dimms come preconfigured with from the factory. It's good to see that your XMP was easily enabled, people don't know or think to enable it.
    Unless they never really put the feature in the BIOS, that seems like a turn off if so... and I like EVGA.

    I'd like to see overclocking of the 5820k on the MSI X99S SLI PLUS and maybe compare it to a high end board to see the difference in overclocking capability.

    I'd love to see a video of the 5930K vs the 4960X with some benchmarks of 4K video rendering, audio and video transcoding and a run on CINEBENCH 15, then wrap up the video with you boxing it up and shipping it to my house. :-)
    I'd REALLY love to see, stock vs stock and OC vs OC how the new $550-$600 chip stacks up against the last gen $1,000 chip. I know it's not apples to apples (DDR4 and all that) but I'd still like to see what a side by side looks like.

    I want to see how far all go them overclock and also how different coolers (single tower, dual tower, 120mm, 240mm CLC, custom water) can cope with the heat.

  • @Romanamon
    @Romanamon 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I heard that due to the binning process, the 5820 won't be able to overclock as well as its more expensive siblings. So it'd be interesting to see how much you can squeeze out of one. If it can keep up then it'd be a fairly compelling CPU value wise.

    I would personally love to see a video on the 5820k overclocked, running two copies of GW2 at once. Because that is my usecase running dualhead software to run two desks off one tower. Planning on upgrading to a 5820k if it can handle the load of two WvW copies.

  • @someusername121
    @someusername121 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    2 things I like about this board, and why I ordered one:
    a) PCI-e switches. If you're buying a 5960X then chances are you have watercooling, and like you said it's a bitch to remove a graphics card from the system to find out if its causing problems.
    b) 2 8 pin CPU power connectors. I've had a 3770k consuming 300W of power by itself. That's what happens when you have no thermal limit and throw 1.6V at it. 5960X is 8 cores so it can theoretically be 600W. A single 8 pin connector that most of these boards have won't cut it.

    The 5930k is a great middle ground. But it is not getting as much attention on youtube as the 5960k and 5820k. I would love to see some over clocking done on this chip.

  • @pam0077
    @pam0077 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm so jealous. My crappy Haswell E can't go one megahert above 4.4GHz, even when I crank up the CPU voltage to a silicon melting 1.4v. But strangely enough, it's rock stable at 4.4GHz with only 1.27v. I've never seen a CPU have such an insurmountable, clear cut wall like this one.

    • @FromTheGroundUP627
      @FromTheGroundUP627 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yer I seem to have hit a wall with mine also, I managed 4.5ghz at 1.19v which I was more than happy with, went from 4.5ghz at 1.4v which the bios set when reaching that overclock and ran at 96c with aio cooler running cinebench r23....way too hot for my liking so decided to undervolt and low and behold I shaved a fair bit off and on full load with cinebench now I reach max temps of 70c on all cores with better performance than when it was auto set to 1.4v
      Cpu score in usernechmark is always 96.7%
      Cinebench is 10600 multi thread.
      I'm more than happy with it, especially upgrading from the 5820k that was also oc to 4.5ghz and for £50 for the 5960x it was a bargain.

    Intel XMP sets the base speed to 125mhz when you set your RAM over a certain speed (2133mhz or more I think) to make it so the CPU can handle the memory or something. Combined with the multiplier means you get a small but stable overclock.

  • @robertwilliams204
    @robertwilliams204 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm also want to see if you can do more with the base clock on all of these chips. I'm thinking the 5930k could almost certainly run a higher a base clock than the 5820k. I've heard people getting as high as 175mhz base on a 5960x which is impressive considering Intel has completely taken any base clock tuning on most platforms the past few years except may Ivy-X which could do around 140 to 150mhz if you had a good chip.

  • @kuhrd
    @kuhrd 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Kinda surprised that this chip was able to clock that high considering all those cores need to be stable and they require a lot of power for such a low TDP envelope. I kinda wonder what this beast would have been able to really do if the VRM's were on board rather than on die.

  • @robertwilliams204
    @robertwilliams204 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm interested mostly in the OC'ing characteristics of each chip and how they differ from one another. The 5930k is obviously binned higher than 5820k. I want to see how each chips performance scales as the clocks get higher. By doing this, would the extra money for 5930k be worth it if scaling is much better than 5820k because I'm not seeing much of a point in choosing the 5930k over the 5820k unless you need the extra pci-e lanes. It's just a little confusing. The difference between the 4820k and 4930k was night and day but with the new chips, not so much.

      I got an early product sample.
      It was before 2011 though.

    Paul have you had any experience with the msi boards? Ever since I started to work heavily on ICEM mesh rendering (which isn't as extensive as many engineering application but still heavy) i noticed that the normal clock rate isnt enough, real time rendering is slowing it down and I was advised to use a higher clock rate. I can't seem to get any overclocks to boot? Is there an option i have to disable first?

    Paul why any of the x99 mother boards does not have video outputs (hdmi.dvi.vga.......................etc) on the motherboards itself. doesn't the new cpu help the people who only browse and watch online video help. or its only targeting the gamers and rendering only .

      Like the X79/LGA2011 processors, the new X99/LGA2011-3 CPUs do not have integrated video. The idea is that anyone who is investing in this higher-end platform will probably want a powerful discrete graphics card as well, and the extra space/power/heat needed to integrate a GPU would be wasted.

    Paul, this probably isn't something you do, but could you do an to-the-limit overclock on one chip?
    i mean don't care about temps that much, just get the chip too the limit :3 i would really love that :3

    Paul! Great Video. Thanks for sharing your x99 OC adventure with the community. I enjoyed the bios walk though. Well laid out and easy to use uefi. Cant believe the user was unable to adjust memory timings, even if it was a launch bios lol
    Here are my suggestions for Haswell Overclocking.
    Run the stability test for 6 or more hours.
    INTEL EXTREME TUNING UTILITY very nice piece of software to OC, monitor vitals, benchmark and stress test.

    Run a benchmark so we can get a general idea of how hard these chips crunch. Cinebench r15 is crowd favorite. you can also post your results on the Linus Tech Tips forums.

    Id love to see you OC the cpu ring bus. You just left it at stock. the resulting ring frequency was 3380mhz. Im curious to see what type of ring ratios your ballin chips can achieve.
    Thanks for all of your hard work. I know Overclocking is time consuming, fun at first but can also seem like a chore. Thanks for sharing your ambient temps as well and doing the F to C conversion.
