We can't wait to show you all the finished mezzanine and big thanks to Nick @projectportugal for the help!
May I ask, why not extend the mezzanine to the wall?
Maybe 3 more slats would help enjoy your vids
As always Nick to the rescue 😇
I think you might need more slats under the mattress, over time the matress will slump into those gaps. Good idea to put the slats in though as you do need airflow to prevent the mattress from going mouldy.
Thanks for sharing ok at moment ❤
@@theoriginhomestead a very thin plywood board would do the trick.
@ Ply would get mouldy needs to breath thats why slats better
@@theoriginhomestead not if you drilled a few holes in ply xx
@@SueWilson-wl7lr thin ply with drilled holes. Exactly.
If you build the stairs or ladder next to the rock wall there might be ample opportunity to build drawers or a storage space under them. - Possibly even a small closet. ❤
❤
Nick has the heart and mind of a saint; he's always willing to help. I wish I were more like that, but once you dig yourself into a rut, it's hard to get out. Now that you guys have seen your mistakes with building the bed frame, I look forward to seeing the finished mezzanine. Creatively spontaneous thinking and playing Jenga with wood scraps, Laura always has good ideas. You could call it a loft bed.
❤
Great video again. Have you thought about putting your kitchen anywhere else other than under your sleeping area? (Smells, smoke steam etc). Your home is really coming now. Beast of luck to you both
Thanks for that and sharing. At the moment will be there but may change ❤
Nick is a good friend.
for sure ❤
That ending was absolutely brilliant 🤣
❤
Everyone needs a Nick in their life😂 Brilliant job🥰💚
❤😊
It’s brilliant that you are learning all these skills I have been watching you from the start the highs and the lows and you have come through brilliantly keep it up
Much appreciated Gerry you so nice ❤
Re kitchen under the bed, be aware also of the fine fats molecules created from cooking will affect the mattress. Guys I’d also like to suggest with the concrete floor (not sure what your intentions are with it) but if you give it a coat of of some sort of polyurethane to stop the dust it will make your experience nicer. Talking from experience. My partner spent days grinding our floor to a smooth finish before applying this coating (can’t recall can look it up later). I love our polished concrete floors. They look & feel stunning. Easy to keep clean & styish. Our weather here in central Victoria, Australia, is similar. Hot days 30-40c in summer down to12c -2c in winter. The floor helps keep temperatures inside even. You’re doing great work with a nice degree of humility. 🥰
Thanks for sharing and the lovely comment ❤😊
Kitchen under the bed ,means your mattress and sheets will absorb. The smell of whatever you are cooking
They do have a great out door kitchen to work with.
❤😊
Without the extra support. Make the lounge area under the bed and the kitchen in another corner.
Thanks for the tip!
You could see when dan was on the mattress from
Underneath view , and not to be crude but when you start to make babies those slats are too far apart to take any pressure in one area , if you catch my drift 😂
ha ❤😊
The spindles have to be 4 inches apart at the widest point. It's so that young children can't get there head between them.
Yea Nick to the rescue. Thank you Nick. Hi Laura and Dan.
❤ ❤
I always love a visit from Uncle Nick.
❤️🙌
Nice to see Nick again.
🤍🤍
Your doing a fantastic job! Well done both of You! It's turning into a lovely homestead!
Thanks Linda ❤
When Nick comes to help, please put the name of his channel in the episode. ‘Project Portugal’ is an amazing property and story! It would be nice to help him out! Great job this week! Also, I think the loft should be extended to one wall or the other. It will look more purposeful and add storage space!
Thanks for the nice comment ❤️
I like the "Lady-waisted" railing that you're applying to your mezzanine floor. That used to be done a lot in the old "Queenslander" houses back about the turn of the 19th into the 20th centuries in the wooden houses that were common in Australia back then. I had one of these style of houses with a single verandah out the front. If you google old Queenslander houses, you'll see a huge variety of railings that were done.
Nick has been a great help to you two and it is wonderful that you're becoming part of the community where you are. It's also good to see that you're not worried about relocating something if you're not 100% happy with how it turns out. And that is the point - it's your place, and if you are not happy with something, then you're free to do with it as you please until you "get it right". Life is a big learning curve and you should be willing to "Give it a go", adding to your skills, which until you purchased that property, were very minimal, but are growing each day As others have mentioned, it could be a problem having the kitchen area located under your sleeping area. Just a thought on this, but is it possible, with Portuguese regulations about building being what they are, for you to add another room to your Barn renovation which could then be your kitchen, which would alleviate the problem of cooking vapors...??
Looking forward to your next video.
That is interesting thanks for sharing all above we are thinking about extending but will still have kitchen inside. All should make sense soon anyway ❤️🙏
Laura and Dan have found their groove.... great to see! 100K subs incoming
Cheers Charles 🤞🏼🤞🏼🙏
Coming along wonderfully 😊 you will get things done as and when the budget allows 😊
Thank you Nick 😊
Thanks for the kind comment hope you well ❤😊
That is looking great and it was so nice that Nick helped get it started.
Yes it was and thanks for the lovely comment ❤️🙏🙌
Laura and Dan , your home is really coming along 👍 love ❤️ from USA 🇺🇸
❤️🙏
Improvement on the location and attachments are fantastic(well done). Your off-grid experience will improve so much with the barn completion, keep it up it’s looking great. ‘Keep the faith” and continue to look after each other.
Such a lovely comment ❤
Hi Laura and Dan you're doing a great job.
Re slats under the bed if that's 2x1 it will snap.
I suggest using the IKEA slats there curved so there give when you lie (curve side up)
If you haven't got a carbon monoxide alarm get one.
Looking forward to seeing it finished.
Thanks for sharing all makes sense ❤
Good job guys.. Yay for uncle Nick❤️❤️❤️
🙌❤️🙏
You make a great team!
❤️🙏🙌
How smart of you to ask for help
Nick's your man😊😊
Thanks and yes he is ❤
Great progress! I agree with the kitchen move and need for more slats, but looking good. The single corner support looks better❤❤
Laura, you're not just a pretty face, but you have brains too. You go girl! Love your practical thought process ❤
Such a lovely comment ❤️ 😊
Great job moving the mezanine. Love the rails.
Guys please reconsider the location ofc your kitchen as seems a bit of a fire hazzard under your bed space.maybe a cofy sofa and coffee table under there and kitchen where you have open window.
❤
Thanks for that Sheila ❤

@@Satya2btrue The rustoleum brand makes a wonderful epoxy paint for driveways. Its light grey in colour and dries to a very hard smooth finish that really seals concrete floors.
@ we did ours in clear. It has aged beautifully & adds a natural appearance to the floor.
You two are doing a great job. Regarding the angle braces between the vertical post and the loft, I think using the shorter one as they are already cut on the sides is perfectly fine. You can always say that we did it cause we didn’t wanna bang our heads on it. No use wasting good lumber when you don’t have to. Keep up the great work.
Hi Laura snd Dan.
Once again looks great. Two suggestions: 1) you can just use the sealing as a projector screen... 😉 And 2) You could decide to make a landing so the stairs wouldn't be too steep to continue climbing. Especially if you should get a little one... 😉 And about the braising... You should only make it like Dan wishes if it doesn't create a hassard as you'll be using the kitchen. No dents in Laura's head please...!!! - I kinda like it as it looks... 😉😅
Greetings from Denmark
Thanks for sharing all ❤😊
Loving the mix of 'project' videos and 'pottering about' videos. Even going to the shops, seeing the surrounding landscape and environment. 😊😊😊
❤
Hi, looking good !! I would have done a MURPHY BED. Looks like a cabinet, pull out for bed, then put back. I saw one that looked like a bookshelf. Better if you need to go to bathroom. 😊
Could be an option in the future 🤍
Love ❤️ 😍 the way you both get along. You both are such a cute couple. 🥰🤗
It is not humble pie Laura and Dan, you two the most humble people I have ever come across, it is a learning curve and you know ones house is never 100% finished. Believe it or not we rented a home for 22 years and the last two years before we moved we finally got the house how we wanted it. One is constantly moving and shifting things. I hope you hear something soon about you being able to stay permanently in Portugal have you heard anything since the last time? As you say you just continue forward on your journey and I think Portugal is where you are both so happy, I see it in your eyes. You both look so much more relaxed. I think make the lounge area under the bed and the kitchen in another corner. Another lovely video and have a lovely day.
We agree thanks for lovely comment ❤
A delight to see you both so relaxed and playful, yet achieving such a lot. Regards from Australia. 💚🐈⬛
Thank you! 😊
Beautiful people. Sending good vibes
Hello you two, I been following you both on your journey right from the beginning. Now, with regards to your mezzanine level, you definitely need more slats under your mattress and you must future proof the mezzanine for getting things up and down, as mattress won’t last forever. So your spindles and banister rail, will need to be able to taken down to allow things like that happen in the future. ❤
Thanks for that Gary ❤
You should put mattress direct over the tables because you have small space to the roof. I recommend to put the stairs permanent and use the space downstairs for storage.
Thanks for sharing ideas 🙏❤️
Without, if it's structurally sound. I've slept in a too small bed and I'll be so happy for you two when you can stretch out and be comfortable! 🛏️ 💙
Thanks for sharing ❤😊
Hi guys just a little info .. two remove yellow sweat stains from your mattress just use a spray bottle with equal parts, water and peroxide. Wait for it to dry and voilà snowy white you guys are awesome by the way ❤
Great tip ❤
Congratulations 🎉
Bless you both xx
Keep going, the tough times will be behind you soon enough. Keep thinking about the future summers in your garden and the cosy winters in your cottage with your range heating your beautiful kitchen.
Sending you warmest wishes and good luck
Claire x
Thank you so much Claire ❤
It's nice to see Nick 😊
❤
Well done on the re-positioning of The mezzanine .. love the upgrade with the decorative finishes 👍👍
This was such a fun video with you two just enjoying each other’s humor … lovely to see 😊😉

Thanks Alice :)
You're both so much more relaxed now, hope you reach 100K but the end of the year!!
That is so lovely and we hope so too ❤😊
Without looks better, your doing a grand job, take care!
Thanks Pauline ❤😊
I like it. Good job!❤😊
❤😊
I would suggest a small wood burning or pellet stove that you could route out thru the wall instead of thru your roof this would avoid the need of piercing the roof all together and if it was a pellet type stove with the option to burn regular wood it would result in a greatly enhanced heating upgrade.
Thanks for the ideas 🙌❤️
@@theoriginhomestead you're welcome a friend of mine just bought such a pellet stove off of Amazon for a cheap price and had it installed in a matter of minutes hope you can find one cheap as that good luck.
Great progress again, I can't get over how nice it looks with the walls done. I also prefer only having the two posts. Looking forward to seeing the rails go up. 👌❤️
Thanks as always for the support and yes we cannot wait to share ❤
Definitely need more slats guys... or mattress won't last! Looking great.. I worked in a bedding dept for years in UK.
❤😊
I think you need more slat under the mattress, can't wait to see it done & I'm so glad you moved it on the other wall, you will have so much space down stairs ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the tips Jayne ❤
I absolutely love your senses of humor. I enjoyed this video so much.
Glad you enjoyed it ❤
You guys are making great progress, it’s starting to become your home. Have a great week.
Thank you! You too! 🙌🙏❤️
Good idea for the bed base… I think you will need more slats though, you will get dips on your mattress if not, maybe one to two in between the ones already installed. Great content guys keep it up.❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
Thanks for that and we will do ❤😊
Your stone wall looks nice
Thanks Micheal ❤😊
Love seeing you guys, great that nick is giving you a hand too wont belong before it’s all done ❤
Thanks Cathy ❤
Great video guys i would put extra slats in and also the other angle bracket to match . Great that uncle nick popped over to lend a hand ❤ .looking well cosy up there 😊
Thanks for kind words and sharing ❤
WITH!!! Yes, yes 😃
❤
If you made steps against the wall, and each step is closed in and is a draw or cupboard great for storage.
Thanks for sharing ❤
You two are really making a beautiful home!
Thank you so much such a lovely comment 😊 😘
@@theoriginhomestead you are most welcome! You will have to start calling it your home and not the barn! It is to nice to call it a barn anymore!
Hi you2 ive enjoyed your videos for a while now keep up the good work everything takes time to make or build no matter how good you are ❤
Thanks Allan ❤
Lovely show, very enjoyable. Suggestion; That big window could be a turned into a Veranda entrance to an outside breakfast room and it would get rid of that ugly block work.
Thanks James and yes something we are doing soon ❤
Thku nic fir helping younguns
❤️
Don't look now guys but you're getting pretty good at this renovation thing! The place is looking awesome! It's also great to see you two enjoying it again. Keep it up. It's gonna be epic! Cheers!
That is so nice of you ❤
Job well done you two....
❤️🙏🙌
You could build walk up stairs that you can use as storage containers at one the side of your bed or along the wall. They don’t have to be very wide.
Thanks for sharing Wendy ❤️🙏😊
Wrt your question regarding the corner braces: Not only would I recommend you use the second set of braces, I'll recommend you add corner braces against the wall as well.
Great job guy`s but I would definately put more slats in so the bed does`nt sag over time , good idea about relocating your kitchen to a safer place xx
❤😊
Looking good 😅
Thanks 😊
For some reason l thought the mattress was going straight onto the mezzanine floor, wont you lose height once the mattress is on? I do understand the need for ventilation under the mattreas though.
Love how the little barn is coming along 😍
No theres loads of height left :) ❤ ❤
Great work Laura and Dan your wee place is coming good . The bright nights are returning am sure you both will be pleased to see some warmer bright long days . God bless good luck take care 🙏❤🫂🍀🍀😊
Thanks for that ❤
Your doing really well , thankyou take care
❤
❤❤❤
Enjoyed your video happy for you both that you are getting so much accomplished. Wishing you both a blessed week.
Thank you so much!
Hello from Canada....your house is really coming together. It looks great!
And BTW the audio is perfectly fine.
Thanks so much John, bet it’s very cold in Canada this time of year 🥶
If you decide in the future the slat rack elevates you too high, you can drill holes in the loft roof to provide air movement at the mattress. Looking good!
❤
Nice one guys its getting there my friends
Thanks Pat 😊
Your home is really coming together nicely and looking great. I would leave out the diagonal, you need that head clearance. Good luck.
❤
Love all you've achieved. Watched you right from the beginning and you've come so far. Your skills are growing daily. Always impatient for the next episode xx
Thank you so much Jenny ❤
It's looking great!
❤😊
32:49 I would have put short blocks of the 4X4 boards under the middle of the bed slats to support the weight better. Mainly because there are so many knots in the middle of the span.
Thanks for sharing ❤😊
I would say without so you don't have too many obstacles or ways to bump your head or hurt yourself I think it looks great the way it is you guys are doing an amazing job
Thanks Sandra ❤
always enjoyable your vids. Skyland is right about the 'Slats',. The mattress would sag eventually. Be easier now than in the future.
Thanks for sharing Jim been fine so far ❤
I would put 2 more posts against the wall. It just seems safer than just the bolts on the wall carrying the weight.
Super strong going nowhere 💪
You had way too much fun smacking that mattress (why does that sound like a dodgy euphemism!?). Coming along great but you may need a support running down underneath the centre of the mattress slats..well, that's how our bed is made anyhoo. Cheers guys ♥️
ha glad you enjoyed ❤😊
I would say without for height and space and would re think about putting kitchen under your bed and more slats for sure but great work guys
Thanks for sharing ❤
Next time you anchor a post to concrete try this type it may work better for you. look up simpson ABA44Z 4X4 Only one bolt into concrete
Thanks for sharing however there is loads of better alternatives but we are very limited out here for certain things ❤😊
Just a little tip when rendering. Slowing down your hand movement while applying will create a better "stick" to the wall. That's all, carry on and good job.
Thanks for the tip ❤
Is looking good guys! 🙏
❤
Zlatí ❤, šikovní ❤❤❤❤❤
❤️🙌
Buen trabajo 👏👏
❤😊
Hi Folks, - still need to make spacers between the boards, on your mezzanine so the mattress can breathe - otherwise you will get mould!
Thanks for sharing tips ❤️
Bed platform much better location! But I have to agree with so many others…not a good idea to put the kitchen under there, both for safety and sanitary reasons. Good luck!
Thanks Sandra and we agree main Kitchen area not going under there ❤😊
Come on now ... Projector sponsors ... steal Lady Laura's heart ❤️ 🙏 Dan you're always such a jolly fellow 🤗 Till next time 💛🕊🌿
ha love that ❤❤
Looking good 👍 👌
Thanks ❤
Dear Dan this is not a barn anymore it is the mini palace❤😂
ha agree ❤
Looking fantastic
Great job 👏
❤
The area under the mezzanine would make an excellent breakfast nook, or dining area.
We agree ❤
It just seems like the right use for that space, thanks for responding.
I wonder if you have seen the bed that folds away on to the wall- it may be interesting for you both-the channel is called ‘My cabin in the mountains’ x
