Fair comment. I think much of the hate for Rebels was due to a weak first season, coupled with anger at The Clone Wars’ cancellation.
But from Season 2 onwards it hits its stride, and really dovetails nicely between TCW and Rogue One. Seeing a completion to Maul’s story and Grand Admiral Thrawn becoming canon was the icing on the cake. Real nice.
This is why Dave Filoni is really the only choice for Lucasfilm.

It's more that It ruined thrawn by turning him into skeletor since he actually did jakeshit and only talked, didn't kill off any main characters besides the mentor character who always dies, only a few battles were good and the rest were fucking boring since none of the mc's were in any danger at all since it was a kiddie that didn't want to be kiddie since it adds characters that only older fans would know, It's turns death troopers into useless jokes that get out smarted by teenagers like any other storm trooper, the helicopter lightsabers, vader even leaves the show for no reason at all when he should still be after the rebels, and those two jedi.

    • @darthraven178

I'd like to point out that there was never any real growth at the hands of our main characters. Their ridiculous plot armor coupled with shoehorned events like Kanan's death and Kallus's turn just kinda had these characters age and not really grow as people.
Not to mention any sort of real nuance when it comes to war and a literal galaxy of beings, they never really lost anything in any sort of meaningful way. Plus time jumps...really? If that's a Fallon idea than I at least am surprised at such a concept. I get it was for kids but jeez, haven't shows like the Last Airbender shown that if you trust in your audience's ability to perceive nuance, their age doesn't matter.

@@godcaoss well I mean there are some bad filler episodes but there are also a ton of bad filler episodes in Rebels. And most of the filler in clone wars is actually really good. And when you really think about it in the long run, basically every episode from season 3 onward is either a small scale arc to set up a larger conflict or a larger scale conflict that still achieves character growth. But even The Clone Wars is filler (Zillo Beast, Saleucami, Lair Of Grievous) it's usually still entertaining. Rebels has bad direction and and a restrictive premise that isnt engaging so it's just not as fun to watch when the story is weaker and trust me, it can get very very weak.

I found Cosmonaut's review really unfair. You can't keep comparing one show to the other especially when they had to make this one for kids. Despite that I think they did a good enough job. Maybe not as great as TCW but it still had a lot of emotional moments and well crafted arcs. If people choose to overlook all that and just blindly hate on that just because it wasn't up to clone wars standards, then that's just being a hater.

The thing I love the most about the Ben vs Maul fight is that Ben takes the Form 4 opening stance, tricking Maul into thinking that he could use the same move that he used to kill Qui-Gon. Maul falls for the bait, and attacks. But then Ben counters it, and defeats Maul. Ben spent years learning how to counter that move. Qui-Gon’s death is one of the reasons Obi-Wan studied Form 3, and became THE master of it. People complained that it was too short, but it makes perfect sense that it was that short. Ben spent decades preparing for that fight.

Shonksu rebels is weirdly disjointed. Most of it is very much directed at kids, but then they have tonal whiplash and do something kind of somber. Then go straight back to the the more kid friendly stuff.

    • @luisoncpp
      @luisoncpp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

George Lucas always cared about making the movies kid-friendly, he lamented that he wasn't able to do that with Episode 3(as with the other 5 movies), but produced Clone Wars in retribution to the kids audience.
They even introduced Ashoka as the kid sidekick to allow kids to identify themselves with her.
Of course the violence is toned town more in Rebels than in Clone Wars, but that doesn't make Clone Wars violent (there is no blood, no dismemberments and most(if not all) of the injuries are made by weapons that doesn't exists on real life or magical powers).
I watched the complete series of Clone Wars, and I know there are mature topics eventually (after 2 seasons and a half, not right away from the beginning), but it never stopped being kids friendly, even if kids cannot fully appreciate the depth of certain story arcs. Same could be said about Rebels (is always kid friendly, but some of its arcs have depth that can only be appreciated by adults).
In the end Star Wars is not a franchise that relies in graphic violence to cause impact and kids is an important audience(even if is not the only intended audience), so is not precisely the best place to look for something oriented specifically to adults.

Sure, it had its downs, and sure, it was limited to a lot of things because Disney owns it, unlike the clone wars, but apart from that, its great! A really underrated TV show. It feels so satisfying because its a complete story. I felt emotionally close to these characters, something I never thought I would when I started watching. It wraps up subjects from the clone wars really well, and answers a lot of questions too. If the hate from the clone wars being cancelled was not around, and the show lasted longer, im sure if would near have the potential of clone wars.

Rebel Assault and Jedi Night are both two of my favorite episodes, and two great easter eggs to games from the 90s :)

Just so you know from fan to fan, Dave Filoni actually has stated in one of the special features in season four that both Ezra and Thrawn are alive. Now that doesn’t mean that if they do end up making a series to wrap all of that up that they won’t change their minds and have it where Thrawn dies

My problem with your review is that you seem to want everything right away. You aren't supposed to get a characters entire backstory at the start. This is a series not a movie. You have time to learn bits and pieces of it's characters as you get to know them in the present. Unless you do back ground searches on everyone you meet this is how it works in real life as well. Some of these characters are meeting each other for the first time and are getting to know each other to the point of like you said becoming a make shift family. We are learning about each one as they are learning about each other. This seems like a natural progression to me. You say that getting Vader and the inquisitor as the first shot is a crutch.... I'd have to disagree with you there as well. This is Star Wars and these are all new characters. Starting out with Vadar giving orders to search out these characters at the start is a good tie in to the story. We know who Vader is and we know his goals from the previous movies then they move into and introduce the characters that he and the empire are going to be searching for through out the rest of the series. Any way that's just my 2 cents on the subject.

nice review. my only disagreement is with the claim that the characters of Clone Wars are better than the characters of Rebels and the reasoning behind it. just because they were new characters? its all opinion of course, but i think the characters in Rebels are staggeringly superior to those in TCW. and the fact that we didn't know them at the start is one of the reasons for that. in TCW we spend the most time with Anakin and Obi Wan who had very little development due to the fact that they are already established between ep2 and ep3. i like that a lot of what took place in TCW helps to inform how they act in ep3 but they're still the Anakin and Obi Wan we already knew. the Best Characters of that show were Ahsoka and Rex who were also new to us in TCW, but were treated so well that we got to really know them. and Rebels just further developed them in amazing ways. the Ghost crew that we meet in season one of Rebels are not the same characters we say goodbye to in season 4. they all grow so much and behave differently from the start of the series. they are some of the best written characters in all of science fiction in my opinion. just look at your own reaction to Kanan's death. did you ever feel that emotional while watching any episode of TCW? i know i didn't. same with Ezra's sacrifice. and Vader vs Ahsoka. each of these moments were truly devastating. all because of the characters. as much as i love Clone Wars, Rebels is superior in nearly every way. animation, character and story. its the single best story in all of star wars.

I just love the fact that Kanan just puts his lightsaber between the inquisitors and destroys it when he could have done that THE FIRST TIME HE SAW HIM. Plus the lightsaber is basically a portable helicopter because you can see them FLY on it, which is not what a lightsaber is supposed to be used for. Anyway, great video! and good points in the video

Honestly, I think everyone just hates Rebels because it had Clone clone Wars to live up to. If it wasn’t in a giant awesome shadow, I think people would like it just fine. It still wouldn’t be as big a hit nearly as close as its predecessor, I’m just saying it wouldn’t get hated so much.

Imagine if they show Cal Kestis and Caleb Dume escaping order 66 in the clone wars series.
