I was hoping this lens was gonna come out before my trip to the states in July, but alas, I had to buy the new Fuji 23 instead, happy I did though.. it FANTASTIC

    Hi Omar, I love your videos for some times now, keep that way it's always refreshing and positive.
    One detail that is not a detail in my opinion : APS-C sensor does not gather less light than full frame.
    An f/1.2 lens gather as much light on full frame or APS-C.
    The only effect of a cropped sensor is the reduced angle of view.
    That's why an equivalent to 50mm in full frame is 35mm in APS-C. As a consequence, a FF 50mm f/1.2 equivalent on APS-C is a 35mm f/1.2 (same angle of view, same light rathering capability).
    But the diaphragm is not the same size anymore : 50 / 1.2 = 42mm, 35 / 1.2 = 29mm. That is this diaphragm diameter difference that makes APS-C depth of field deeper.
    Most of the time, croppped sensor try to produce equivalent resolution as bigger sensor. And to do that, each pixel has to be physically smaller on the sensor (photosite). And that is why there is more noise on smaller sensor.
    The key thing to remember when talking about depth of field, no matter the sensor size, is to consider the lens diaphragm size. A 300mm f/4 with a 75mm diaphragm will have more background blur than a 85mm f/1.4 with a 61mm diaphragm...at the same focus distance, of course ;-).

      Actually looks like a FF 1.8, which is insane for a crop sensor camera. It means even shooting not so close scenes, it creates this 3dish elegant background separation without being too exaggerated 🤩

    @hyppyrotta71 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Just a small correction, the size of the sensor does not actually change the exposure. F1.2 lens on APS-C is going to give you same exposure as on full frame. The better low light performance of full frame is due to better high ISO tolerance.

    • @mortenthorpe
      @mortenthorpe ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yup… I wince every time,some photographer postulates what Omar repeated.. it’s about light per pixel, and for larger pixels there’s a difference, but not for larger or smaller overall sensors directly

    • @kosmidts
      @kosmidts 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It is not about less light! It is about less information. Sensor wise! The 27mm photo will be a cropped eq of a fullframe 27mm. Lets stop this nonence!

    • @mortenthorpe
      @mortenthorpe 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@kosmidts in terms of a photograph, what you write makes zero sense… light is information in a photo! It is about the amount of light collected per pixel, so the size of the pixel matters… not the size of the viewport (the whole sensor) of the collected sensor-array!

    • @matt88169
      @matt88169 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      True that f/1.2 is f/1.2. Not true that FF is always going to provide better "high ISO tolerance". Since I've been editing files from both an XT3 and D810 lately, I can say they both break down in similar ways in "low light" indoor shots - softer, mushier, noisier. Turns out they have very similar ISO performance, despite the XT3 having "inferior" pixel pitch. I know that newer mirrorless cameras raise the bar in terms of ISO performance, but 1/3rd-1-stop better performance is pretty moot, IMO. Long story short, crappy light is crappy light. If you're going to shoot in crappy light, you are going to get crappy photos. BTW-the Sony A7RV has the same pixel pitch as the XT3, and beats it in terms of ISO performance by about 2/3rds of a stop. Something besides the size of the photosites is contributing to that performance, and it isn't sensor size. I'd like to see ISO performance improve a lot more because I don't find it THAT outstanding, but I guess the big companies are obsessed with resolution.

    • @hyppyrotta71
      @hyppyrotta71 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@matt88169 Yeah, that was just generalization on my part. The 26mp X-trans sensor has pretty good high ISO performance, even for a crop sensor.

    I appreciate that Viltrox is making Pro glass that goes against the notion that fuji = tiny and unprofessional (in the eyes people that don’t know any better). I personally love the size. Fits perfectly with the XH cameras. We have a lot of shooters that came to or use fuji for the money and the size savings but don’t care for the super tiny equipment. Nothing wrong with them, but they just aren’t for everyone. I personally prefer lenses that are bulky and well built while not being too small like some fuji lenses or too large like most canon pro lenses (which are literally canons lol).
    Overall, I’m just happy we have all of these options that suit numerous types of photographers. What a time ✅

    • @timblass4811
      @timblass4811 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great new option. As have 27mm f2 voigtlander and still the 27 2.8 fuji, I'll pass for now, but Viltrox are up there in some cases surpassing Fuji's own lenses in terms of build and IQ. I have the Viltrox 13mm and 75 mm and love them both, 2 lenses for the price of one Fuji! Haven't seen the retail price but guessing £450 , 500 dollars mark?

Yes, it's not 27mm, but 33/f1.4 is so good I don't need to be looking for that middle ground now. While the 35/1.4 weighs 187g and the Viltrox 27/f1.2 is 560g, the 33/f1.4 has very friendly 360g 😉👍

    Lovely lens, though it might run off with my wife - it's filthy effective! Only its weight and lack of linear motor stop me changing my Fuji 33mm f1.4 to it. (I know the Viltrox's stepping motor still autofocuses really well - but just not quite as crisply in Continuous autofocus mode, apparently, which is a mode I use a lot).
    Well, I also simply want to learn the 33mm (50mm equivalent full frame) as it's a classic focal length.
    f1.2 is good but it only lets in about 36% more light than f1.4 (and has a lot of vignetting at f1.2), so it's not enough to bring me out in sticky, jealous nightsweats about f1.4 being the best my lens does. But there is some moisture persisting in the areas at the top of my legs and armpits.

    they understand the FUJI AF so well, and still their speedbooster's AF i shit, I just don't get it haha.. Anyways, their latest lenses are just incredible! I'd love to see a Pro 56 1.2 from them as well, since Fuji's own lenses, don't offer good video AF, even the refreshed WR 56 1.2 still uses the old jumpy motors, and while I find the Viltrox 56 1.4 AF to be better then both the Sigma and Fuji lenses, tha lack of weathersealing is a deal breaker to me. Even tho I just recieved my Sigma 56 today, I'd totally change it to 56 1.2 Pro Viltrox if they decide to do one. I find the Sigma AF good so far, but having apeture ring like my Fuji 23, and better weather sealing will be nice!

    Omar, you get the exact same light on a crop full frame or medium format f1.2 is f1.2, nothing to do with the opening depth of field changes, yes, but the same light cheers for all the great videos.

    • @Elgsdyr
      @Elgsdyr ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well... You get the same light *intensity*, meaning e.g. 1 mm² on each sensor will receive the same amount of light. But as the area of the FF sensor 2.25x larger than the APS-C sensor, you (logically) get 2.25x the amount of light (number of photons) hitting the full image. That's why the noise is roughly 2.25x better on FF sensors. And you will experience a similar step going to medium format. In theory you should get same results if you shoot at comparable fov (1.5x focal length) and depth-of-field (1.5x f-stop) and use the ISO to compensate for the light loss. This is why e.g. F1.2 on APS-C isn't quite the same as F1.2 on FF. Light intensity, yes. Everything else, no.

    I would love if Viltrox released a standard focal length around 33/35mm lens with that same f/1.2 aperture and sper rugged build. I could totally see myself replace my current Fuji glass (which is 23 f/2, 35 f/2 and 56/1.4 from viltrox again) with the 27/standard/75mm for my even work with my X-H1. Would definitely be the kind of glass that you don't replace for a good decede until the camera dies.
    (now that I think of it, all the focal length from their pro line have been kind of "off" compared to the general prime focal length we get. They made a 40mm equiv and a 112mm equiv instead of the usual 35mm / 85mm (or 105). I could totally see them skip the 35mm lens do go for a 40mm lens (60mm equivalent). That would be fun a challenging to use I guess?)
    Also I'd love for a company to come up with a small 18mm lens for Fuji. I've been shooting 28mm lenses for so long on my Nikon FX cameras that I really want to get one, but I'm a bit turned off by the softer characteristics of the older (and wayy slower to autofocus) 18mm f/2, and the 18mm f/1.4 is just too expensive for me. I'd love to see a company like Viltrox (or even 7 artisans? they showed they have the competence to do it with their 27mm f/2.8 AF lens) try to get a nice, compact and affordable 18mm prime (I don't care if f/2. or f/2.8 to be completely honest, either one I'd buy it)

    • @thebitterfig9903
      @thebitterfig9903 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I was also thinking of a 40mm. There are a lot of classic 58mm lenses, particularly fast lenses. The old Carl Zeiss 58/2 Biotar (sharp wide open for a lens of its era), Nikon Noct, Minolta 58/1.4. A Viltrox 40mm kinda fits into that “tight standard” range, plus it’ll feel like there more of a separation in field of view from the 27 than a 33 would offer. The other thing is that it’d get a little bit more of the focal length working for it for compression and shallow dof, and sometimes that’s worth going for with a crop sensor lens.
      40mm is also the focal length I want from TTArtisan for a new AF lens, but because I want them to copy the other famous 58mm lens-the Helios 44. Their 27/2.8 is almost as close as you can get to a vintage lens with AF, and making a 40/1.5 Biotar with extra swirly bokeh would be an interesting niche lens, not for everyone, but there are folks who’d want that combo of modern convenience and classic rendering.
      I can understand the desire for an affordable but more modern 18mm, tho… a Viltrox Pro 20mm f/1.2 might make sense, but it’s not going to be small.

    Man ever since I got the XF27mm I kept saying to myself "if someone releases a brighter version of this lens I'd instabuy it" but this is not what I meant... I know Voigtlander has one as well but it's just too much for a manual.
