      They need to replace it with a "pro" version or mark ii that comes with weather sealing

      @@andrescruz9448 Would be perfect with weather sealing but I don't see a MK2 version coming out for at least 4 years tbh, its a very new lens and selling really well. Obviously don't get yourself into this position but I took mine up Mt Snowdon in Wales, got caught in a shower and the lens was completely soaked, after a hour of driving the lens and camera (XT5) worked fine.

    I’m happy that I started my fujifilm photography and the first lens I purchased is the Viltrox 13mm f1.4 for landscapes along with 85mm f1.8 mk2 for portrairs. With the calibre of Andy Mumford approved this lens, I’m really glad that I purchased it.

    I’m glad you just reviewed this lens! Actually just got it a week ago based on other very positive reviews. So far, I find this lens incredible for landscape… haven’t tried it yet for Astro. Build quality I think is superb! I own the Fuji 16mm f/1.4 for a while now and put the Viltrox just on par with the Fuji at half the price with the little extra wider perspective…most important for me, autofocus !! This is the lens to have in this range…very nice! Thanks for sharing your opinion…Be safe. Cheers..

      @@AndyMumford The Viltrox is definitely a gem of a lens…I’m not a pixel peeping guy but this lens is very special! The rendition of color and fast autofocus (XT4) is incredible…don’t know if it is new technology, but whatever it is …Viltrox did it right. The Fuji is a superb lens, one of their best…but got new heavy competition !

    Hi Andy , I've had this lens on my Fuji for a few months and agree with your review , the Viltrox is much better than my old 12mm F2 MF Samy ( now sold ) I found that F1.4 helps with composition with astro but needs to be stopped down to F2.2 for very good stars in the corners .

    Thank you so much for making these videos. Truly. I am switching from Canon to Fuji and have a x-t30ii (being delivered either today or tomorrow) and I found your TH-cam channel just AFTER I decided to switch. I think I might have found the best platform (for me) based on your reviews. I loved Canon for years, tried Sony and Nikon but things never really meshed. Sony's menu was a nightmare for me so I always felt like an outsider to the scene rather than part of it. So, anyway, not making this comment about me, but rather you and your efforts in making this/these videos. Thank you for your work on here, your images are fantastic and also thank you for your presentation style as it is clear, engaging and concise. Best of luck and I have subscribed.

      @@AndyMumford I can back to this video today, just to have another look because I found a 10 to 24 version one in my local area for about 600 bucks and I was tempted by but something appeals about the Viltrox because it is 1.4 versus F4. And I think that's really good value with the F4 and I always said with prime lenses. You can always move your feet forward or back to create more with in a photo now you are a little bit limited with 13 mm to do that but certainly you can also crop as well. I think this is the lens I will go for over the 10 to 24 which I just felt was very soft at F10. I had a look at some images online shot at F10 with the 10 to 24, and they just look soft way too soft for my liking.

    If you want to vlog with a prime lens this is probably the best one to choose currently. The best option before was either a 16 or the 10-24. The 10 is too wide for me and the 16 is still a little bit too close to the face in my opinion. I love using it at 12-14mm.

    As usual, a fantastic video from Andy: clear, not overlong, real life image examples...that's great. I'm really torn between this one and the 10-24WR. I like the Viltrox quality, I have their 33mm and it impresses me each time (build quality, image quality). I would do mainly landscape (80%?) and possibly some other use (architecture, indoor, ...). I love also the fact that the 10-24 is WR, becaus I often do seascape and sometimes seawater ends up on the gear, so I rince it after with freshwater. I really feel like the Fuji 10-24WR is overpriced, and for half the price we have this Viltrox. Though choice. Any advice from Andy or people who tried/used both?

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have both and I like them both, but they're different things. The 13mm is super sharp and excellent for astro, but it's not wide enough for some of the images I like to shoot. I don't think I could use the 13mm exclusively.

    • @remyharel7171
      @remyharel7171 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AndyMumford Thanks for your answer. I feared also 13mm would be a little too narrow for some of the image and that I would use it mostly at f/8. So I ordered the 10-24WR....and I'll see later if I need the 13mm (I doubt since I don't do Astro, or low light, I mostly to landscapes on tripods).

    Great review and stunning pictures!!
    From what I understood from this review and some others, this would be a great lens for tight places, probably not that much otherwise that would be limiting and in that case i would probably need the 8mm instead in that case, but for video, creative with artists photography and local shops this should be a bnager for the bucket with my 18-55mm and 35mm 1.4!

    Thank you for providing an actual review with pictures taken in the filed as well as test shots.
    Longer general comment incoming :D
    I see people comparing this lens with the 10-24mm, concluding that it is a zoom replacement (not refering to you of course). I think there is no comparison between these 2 for many reasons and they serve different purposes (variety of focal length - 10mm is pure joy, max aperture, native - third party etc). I bought the 10-24mm for landscapes because of your videos to be honest and it is probably the best purchase I have made within the X - system. It is now my go to lens for street as well because it is so versatile. I find the Viltrox being a zoom replacement only if one wants to have a wide angle lens for almost everything while accepting its compromises without spending too much as it is quite cheap for such a quality lens.
    As for astrophotography in general I have yet to see an impressive lens within the system. Even less wider, modern and expensive lenses like the xf 18mm f1.4 have coma. Unfortunately one has to either use a star tracker and step down a bit in order to get cleaner shots or crop the edges a bit. But for auroras where the exposure time matters (obviously one cannot stack shots or use a star tracker for that) and a bright aperture is very handy, a wide fast lens like the Viltrox is very nice addition indeed.
    Overall, there is a place for both of them. Thank you for the practical review once again.
    P.S. the 10-24mm is indeed noticeably sharper at around f5.6 - f6.1 at pretty much every focal length. The fact that it doesn't show focus breathing is awesome for stacking as you have already stated of course in an older video.

    Andy have you tested the manual settings. Eg Astro.
    I have had issues with my lens. I have had to return my lens. Using it in manual for astro I had star trails in one corner of the lens. Also achieving infinity focus was touchy and turning the focus ring would sometimes cause iratic movement on the distance indicator.

    • @CianMcsweeney
      @CianMcsweeney 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yeah that's a weird choice of lens, imo most people are looking for fast and wide ultra wides in the 10-13mm range, 8mm seems a bit too wide and F3.5 is way too slow for a prime

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's an odd choice to be sure, and I'm interested to see who Fuji are pitching it at when it comes out. It's curious that the 14mm f2.8 is pretty much the only prime Fuji have left to refresh, so I would have thought something in that range would have made more sense

    This lens replaced my 10-24, since I used the latter mostly at 10 mm and it did not perform that well at narrower apertures. A better low light performance and depth of field opportunities plus a slightly better sharpness make it much more useful option in my opinion. I only miss the weather sealing. A great review btw 👌🏻

    Q: I use the samyang 12 mm f2 for astro and generally like it a lot. The coma is fairly well controlled wide open except the far corners. I find ISO 3200 is about the upper limit on my xt3 before noise starts to become too noticeable for single exposures and am really enticed by this new lens and the ability to use a lower ISO. You mentioned that this is your go to lens for Astro now. Could you give us your thoughts comparing the coma aberration between the two lenses? Can i assume the lenses must be fairly equal in that regard for you to make the viltrox your primary astro lens?

    Hello Andy…love your videos. I am considering both the Viltrox 13 and Fuji 10-24. I’m curious what your thoughts are on the Fuji 8-16. The weight is basically the same as the other two combined so one lens could, in theory, do the job of two. How do you feel it would stack up optically? Thanks very much.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I reviewed the lens a while back and it's excellent optically, However it's big and bulky, and requires specialised filters (which is a deal breaker for me). You could also look at the Sigma 10-18mm f2.8, which I just did a review of this week.

      You could try changing the focus peaking colour to something brighter like yellow, but apart from that I'm not sure what to do. Most Fuji zooms have the same manual focus rings that don't have a start or stop point, so it's not really something specific to this lens.

      I can't say for sure, but I would say it's likely. The Viltrox is 67mm in diameter, so that gives 4mm on each side of the lens to the edge of the filter. With the filter holder on, I'm pretty sure you'd get vignetting

    That’s a very thorough review in just 15 mins! Very helpful and definitely food for thought. I currently have the 14mm 2.8 for landscape and the Samyang 12mm 2.0 and 8mm 2.8 fisheye for astro. With astro I do find wider is better. Thinking about consolidating to the Viltrox 13mm 1.4 for landscape/astro plus the Laowa 9mm 2.8 for astro. I’d be sacrificing field of view with the Laowa vs the fisheye, but avoiding a lot of de-fishing in post!
    I do like the “look” I get from the 14mm 2.8 (a combination of sharpness and micro-contrast I think), and would be wary of giving that up. But the images you’ve shown, especially of Lofoten, seem to show a similar look from the Viltrox. Have you used the 14mm and if so, do you have a view on how it compares to the Viltrox?

    Awesome video! Quick question. I am thinking about buying a Fuji X-S10 (My first ever Fuji) and I am just confused about which lens to buy. My budget really only allows me to buy one lens - I take pictures/make videos at family events and do travel vlogging (for myself) and when it comes to pictures and the videos I make, I am a sucker for great background blur and good AF and a do need a wider field of view as my travel vlogs are a lot of me talking to the camera. My options at the moment are:
    - Fuji 16mm 1.4
    - Fuji 14mm 2.8
    - Fuji 16mm 2.8
    - Fuji 18mm 2.0

      Honestly, lens hoods on wide angles are completely useless. They are short so they don’t intrude into the image, and so provide next to no shade, and what shade they do provide is at the top, and so only useful if the sun is directly above. 99% of the time they’ll have no effect in keeping direct light off the front element and just get in the way of filters. It’s more effective to use your hand to provide shade when necessary

      @AndyMumford  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For wide angle lenses hoods are absolutely useless. In order not to intrude on the frame they have to be quite small, and they also only provide coverage at the top and bottom (they're almost always cut away at the side so they don't stick into the frame). This means, they only actually keep light off the front element when the sun is directly above. When you're shooting in late light, they don't provide any protection at all, so for me, they're just clutter that's best left at home.

  • @Razertw
    @Razertw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Wow quite surprised how soft the 10-24mm is at f/7.1. Considering the max apeture of f/4, this should be its sweet spot. And that was at 13mm so it might be even worse at 10mm.
    Stopping down to f/5 was a very noticable difference, it's not even a full stop from f/4 so it's interesting. But not sure how often you're going to get away with shooting at this apeture. I guess at 10mm the DOF is still huge.
    I noticed that when you include example images with metadata you shoot 90% at f/7.1. I think I've seen Andrea doing the same. So I thought this is the lens' sweet spot.

    The build seems better, though it is twice as big and heavy and doesn't have weather sealing. And as I remember from Viltrox lenses, this has worse edge softness (still better than the 10-24mm MK I that I have). But the 1.4 Aperture is very appealing indeed, particularly for Astro as at 1.4 you just point at the sky and can check where the Aurora hides behind clouds so you track it in any condition. Can see why this was mentioned in the comment on my video... ;)

      There is no equivalent that is just marketing crap. It is a 13mm f1.4. The view is cropped because of the smaller sensor. Depth of field, exposure everything is the same apart from the crop. Why if you have a Fuji aps-c camera do you care about 35mm framing anyway.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@alanmcdade2459 Well, he was asking a question and I was giving a polite reply. As for using 35mm framing equivalents, it's pretty much common practice. So much so that Fuji use it themselves on the specifications of all of their APS-C lenses on the Fujifilm website.

    • @alanmcdade2459
      @alanmcdade2459 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AndyMumford never understood why. Trying to explain equivalence just causes all sorts of issues. It is only useful if you have a another camera with a 35mm sensor and you want to make an equivalent photo with the same framing. Who actually does that. Usually it is just full frame shooters trying to prove their format is “better” when it is actually just different.
      So a 13mm is equivalent to 20mm if you frame it the same. The depth of field is that of 13mm 1.4 or a 20mm 2.0. The exposure is a 1.4 and compression of a 13mm. If you calculating the maximum Astro exposure using rule of 500(full frame) it is a 20mm or rule of 300 (APSC) it is a 13mm.
      Why make it complicated on APSC it’s a 13mm f1.4 and it’s not really equivalent to anything in the 35mm world.

    Eh, wait a minute, is that like the gorilla in the basketball match trick? You skipped past that photo of a cheetah taken with a 13mm lens without comment. Was it tame or stuffed, or with a shutter speed of 1/400 did you just bug in, take the shot and bug out again in 2/400’s?

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, you're the first person who's mentioned the cheetah shot. There's a story behind it. The cheetah in the image is one of two that was orphaned when it was too young to know how to hunt. Their mother was killed by illegal hunting when they were just a few weeks old, and they never learned the skills to survive in the wild. Left alone they'd starve to death, so the Namibian government pays subsidies for farmers to look after them. It's a massive undertaking because they have an enormous compound with tens of kilometres of fence, and they get through huge amounts of meat each day, plus vet fees etc. The farm we stayed on to shoot the astro photography above the quiver trees looked after these two cheetahs, but one of the conditions (for obvious reasons) is that the farmers can't use the animals as a tourist attraction or for any commercial gain. Because the two guides I was working with on the tour have been going there for years and know the farmer well, we were asked we'd like to watch him feed the cheetahs, but he asked us not to share any photos that could identify where it was. So we were allowed to watch him feed the animals, which was an incredible privilege, and then take some photos. So, it's not a wild animal, but at the same time you don't want to get too close because it's still a fully grown cheetah. This one had just been fed, so we had a few minutes to take some photos before we left.

    I'm surprised you didn't point out the greater black contrast in the viltrox 13 f/1.4. I don't think it is because the lens has less light than the 10-24 at the same exposure. Although it is good news that the 10-24 has a solid t-stop value for a zoom lens, even better than the 8-16.
