      Also 'entry level luxury watches'. Somehow people think if they'll spend savings on a cheapest Rolex they can find, it will automatically open the doors to all luxury watches. No it won't. You'll just get stuck with some expensive watch you don't even like.

    I don't mind some quartz watches, especially the solar powered ones, because as a daily wear watch you can just put it on and you don't have to set the time every time. I missed out on an Omega Aqua Terra Quartz for $900 at a store that was going out of business. I'm still kicking myself for not picking it up. Such a nice piece for daily wear and now more than twice that price.

    Depends on the vintage watch, I always check the reputation of the EBay seller, before I buy. That way, if it goes wrong, I can send it back. I recently bought a 70s citizen day date 21 Jewel, the seller passed the ratings test and I have zero regrets, it's a gorgeous watch and it's very reliable.

    I’ve had my rare black face Lorus Titanium quartz field watch since the early 1990s. Only bought it as a stopgap because I lost a Longines. But it’s now my favourite, not least because it always keeps great time (unlike me) - gains maybe 10 seconds over 12 months!
    Just checked, it’s actually just 6 seconds! The reason to buy a quartz is reliably and low service costs. The reason to buy a cheap quartz with a Seiko movement is a no brainer. I paid £35 for mine, when £35 was worth £35. Today the money is worth less, but the watch is actually cheaper!! But I can’t find a black face anywhere.

    I bought a Seiko SARB033 as my first watch two weeks ago. I really want a Rolex Explorer 1 or the new OP in Green, but neither can be found where I’m at. And I definitely won’t pay $10k on chrono24. I did technically buy a substitute watch, but I was told by several people I should buy a cheaper watch first to get used to automatic watches. So far I absolutely love it, but you’re right, I can’t help but wish it was an Explorer at times.

    I don't understand the hate towards quartz watches. I bought a Seiko and rarely use it. I use my quartz watches more because they don't need to be dialed to the proper hour again every single time I want to wear it. This also made me realize maybe a more expensive automatic in the 1k+ range is not worth it for me. In addition, let's not forget to mention the additional money it takes to service an expensive automatic watch. I'm the type of person that just puts on the watch and forgets about it. I use my watches to tell time not to look whether it's automatic or quartz.

    • @idahowatchenthusiasts
      @idahowatchenthusiasts 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are a lot of sides to that argument. you're right on most of those points. But there some things that sway many watch collectors towards mechanical watches. Its the beauty of the sweeping second hand as opposed to a ticking one. Its the idea that so much more design and work goes into an automatic watch than your typical quartz movement. Its having a connection to a legacy of watchmaking that has been passed down for centuries of watchmaking. Its a skill and a artistry that quartz doesn't appeal too. I will also throw this out there to those that are new to watch collecting, if something is wrong with a mechanical watch it is fixable or 'servicable' while a quartz movement would have to be replaced if it isn't working properly.

    • @idahowatchenthusiasts
      @idahowatchenthusiasts 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will say i personally don't hate quartz watches as a whole. I think everyone should wear watches and quartz make more sense for some people. But i know as a watch collector i am far more interested in automatic or mechanical pieces

    Good advice! That's why I bought a new Patek Philippe that I liked the most straight from the main-street dealer.

    I'd rather the quartz Royal Oak. When I saw it on TGV's channel, the size, the thinness, it was like, that is the correct dimensions for that particular design!

    • @ImDembe
      @ImDembe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point on quartz, them and manual you can make thinner. And if my dayly watch was an automatic it would probably be broken by now, it have been through so much crap and i have only changed pins two times and battery two times in 7 years.

  • @Bredaxe
    @Bredaxe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'm with you, last time I bought a new watch, it was a Wal Mart Casio. The rest have been barely used. Let someone else drive it off the lot and take the loss. Of course some watches will appreciate, but you're already shelling out a shit ton for those brands up front.

    I have an Apple watch for work (mostly for steps, heart rate and view email), I use a G-shock Mudmaster for camping and going to the gun range and a Rolex Milgauss for everything else. Had multiple Tags, 2 Bell and Ross and an Omega but somehow I am picking up magnetism and kept having to have them demagnetized. My collection of 20 is now down to 3, never been happier.

    I would always prefer a quartz moon phase watch over an auto moon phase watch. Why? Because I don't have watch winders, and I wouldn't want to reset a moon phase auto every time I put it back into my watch rotation and wear it.

    Many ADs are actually making some discounts around 10-15% so then depreciation isn’t really going to be high. Buying used watch is always a risk unless you buy it from well know seller. Although buying used from well known seller sometimes almost matches the price of new watch with discount straight from AD :)

  • @lesliepopoff5347
    @lesliepopoff5347 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Mostly good advice. However, if you have to save up to buy an expensive mechanical watch, that means that you are generally a person with limited funds. Okay, you saved the money and got your watch. Now it eventually comes time to have it serviced. You send it back to the manufacturer, and they hit you with a $600 bill, and often times more. There are a lot of very nice watches for that amount. Or, you have your dreamed of watch, costing an arm and a leg, and you are now afraid of damaging it. You become somewhat hyper aware of it. My question is this: where is the line drawn between you owning the watch and the watch owning you? If you have deep pockets who cares, but for most of us I would say get a watch you like, you don't have to save for years for, is reliable, dependable, and doesn't cost more than a house payment to service.

    I bought the tantalum AP RO Nick Faldo 56175TT not because I couldn’t afford a larger automatic AP (indeed I own other vintage APs which have intricately engraved automatic movements) but because I like that specific model. It has an amazing feel on the wrist and wears larger than it’s 33mm diameter. The 36mm tantalum automatic model doesn’t have the same proportions being substantially and disproportionately thicker. Just throwing out a differing opinion on a particular quartz RO.

    • @888kingster
      @888kingster 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      What were your substitute watches?

    • @TonyMajo
      @TonyMajo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@888kingster The first one will seem really bad to most people reading here. I wanted a Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days GMT PAM00441 Ceramic, but the thought of spending $10K on a watch seemed so out of reach to me. So I bought a Nixon watch that had a similar case shape in matte black with antiqued numbers. I even had a custom made strap to really finish off the look. Like Fed said, I enjoyed it for a month or so, then realized it didn't even compare.
      The second was more recent and less egregious, but the result was the same. Being primarily a car racing fan, I have always wanted a Daytona. I always liked the Submariner too, but if I had to pick just one, I wanted the Daytona. I was at the point in my life where spending $10K on a watch didn't seem so unreasonable anymore, but of course the Daytona was selling for double retail for the ceramic bezel, and at least $5K over retail for a pre-owned stainless bezel. I just couldn't justify spending that much. When the Sea-Dweller 50th anniversary model came out, I loved it. I have a bigger wrist and liked the rugged look of it. And I could get one for just $1k over retail, so I jumped on it. Now I do still love this watch, and if having both was possible, I would do that. But after owning it for a year and a half, I find I'm still wanting the Daytona and am thinking about selling the SD and saving up the difference to buy a Daytona.

      @@TonyMajo absolutely if you like what you have- DONT SELL IT, save if you must but keep the sea-dweller, sometimes in life sacrifice is necessary but we are talking about rolexes here, not worrying about feeding your children lol, as long as all needs are met and of course you are meeting some of your family's wants as well (don't be selfish, it's just not gentlemanly)- keep the sea-dweller. get the perfect colors that you want in your daytona, don't settle at all, and you are going to feel so satisfied when you slide that bad boy on your wrist. i sold a prized hockey jersey to help fund a watch i wanted once, signed authenticated sergei fedorov red wings jersey that has a specially made case and everything, and while i liked the watch, my prized jersey was gone forever, never coming back, so i absolutely agree you have a treasure of a wife and you should listen to her, when the wife says ok- you are good to go! take yes for an answer lol. congrats and enjoy it in good health man, just rewards for a job well done!

    About point 02 - I have bought quite a few vintage watches from no name dealers i.e. private persons and found them, if not knowledgeable but in the majority as honest as any professional watch seller. Less expensive ,too. I don`t take much note of what the seller says anyway. An old watch is always a risk and generally it is wise to add the cost of an inspection or service by your trusted watchmaker to the calculated purchase price.

After I'm gone, someone else will get it - for free. With that in mind, I am game for something like the quartz Ebel Classic Wave. I will spend my $1500 and have it - and the $4500 I have left over (by not getting a Rolex or Omega), I will spend on new furniture or travel - or I'll bank it. Getting expensive mechanical watches is not the only solution to life.

Next watch for me will be the 231.10.39.21.03.001 Aqua Terra (Skyfall). I have equal amounts of Swiss autos and quartz in my collection. Each to their own - but I adore my do-anything Seamaster quartz.

      A few things about Fed- He's a watch snob, he loathes quartz watches. He is dismissive of inexpensive to moderately priced watches. About 6 months back he did a video where he basically slammed people who collect watches like Seiko, Hamilton, G-Shock etc (yeah, I know that like once year he trots out an SKX in a video to show he can be a regular watch guy- but I don't buy it). The implication was you can't be a real watch enthusiast unless you're going for the luxury level of Rolex/Omega and up. And above all he's a WATCH DEALER. He has a vested interest to push absurdly priced timepieces and back hand non luxury level watches.

    • @maxschmidt666

      I disagree on that point, because TV's loose a hell lot of value in no time. So e.g. if your favorite TV costs 3 Grand, just buy a mid-tier TV for 300 bucks and wait two years.
      Solution: You'll get your high-class TV for a fraction of the original price, AND had a good TV that got the job done for two years.
      If TV's would hold their price tag like a lot of watches do, I would agree with you on not settling for a mid-tier TV.

I have a 1982 Girard Perregaux and it is the only one I have ever seen... I can't find a single image of it on the Internet as it is limited edition. You can't go to just any store for decent vintage watches or ones with limited production.
    Also water damage can be repaired with no telltale signs if you actually go to a quality watch repair shop or send it to the actual manufacturer.

    I sadly committed sin No. 5, buying a substitute watch, and the regret is real and overwhelming. Learn from my mistake people. So I found out about the 2021 Seiko Ginza Alpinist about 3 months after it was released, it's astonishingly pretty and it's like it was designed to appeal to my tastes, I love that Green/Blue colour. Anyhow it was MASSIVELY popular and so it was COMPLETELY sold out and I searched everywhere relentlessly, even e-mailing retailers to see if they had any in stock. The Used Market was selling it for $2k USD and I just wasn't willing to pay that much. However I was browsing some watch sites on the Black Friday Weekend and I saw the Seiko Ginza Presage discounted down to $650 from it's $895 RRP. It has the same basic dial pattern but a bunch of other changes. But it still had that beautiful Ginza Brick pattern and colour so I thought I'd go for it.
    It arrived. I opened it up. I was overwhelmed with disappointment. It's hideous, sincerely one of the ugliest watches of 2021, the dial is overly cluttered with an open heart & 24 hour subdial, it has a big black bezel that darkens the whole appearance of the watch, the indices are bigger and so the light doesn't catch and play with the beautiful intricate brick pattern the way it does on the Alpinist version which is much cleaner. Also the press shots do not accurately reflect the colours of the dial, it's so dark and dull by comparison.
    Ultimately I took it out of the box, put it on my wrist, looked at it under various types of light only to find it looked awful under all of them, and then put it back in the box and I've still got it sitting there unopened since. It's effectively brand new, it still has the plastic protector stickers on the bracelet and rear. I'm planning to sell it online. I pray I can recoup the $650 I payed for it but I actually feel bad about selling it, like there is no way whoever buys it off me is going to be pleased by it, it feels like I'm planning to scam someone so when I do sell it I'm going to have to put up that disclaimer so I don't disappoint someone. It's so bad that I've seen it on a few TH-camr's 'Worst Watches of 2021' lists.
    Never Again! I've learned my lesson!

      Seals or crown could be damaged etc. You can sort little issues and then just get it water resistance tested. It’s a risk if you can’t see the actual movement which you often don’t on eBay. Any decent seller will give you pictures if you ask. Water damaged usually means corrosion to the actual movement, this is just my experience so don’t put any faith into it. Generally I would say if you can’t see pictures of movement don’t chance your money 👍🏻

      Watch dealers will generally say “no longer water resistant” on vintage watches. The watch could still be waterproof up to its water rating. However since seals deteriorate over time, the dealer doesn’t want to guarantee as such and risk having to accept a refund.
