    The cheapest watch I know of that still gets a nod of approval is of course the Casio F-91w, iconic in every sense 👍

      Eriond1 Yep, but I suppose if you see someone wearing an F-91W they may or may not be a watch enthusiast, whereas someone wearing one of the watches in this video pretty much identifies themselves as a watch enthusiast.

    Citizen is a Japanese clock house founded back in 1918. The name "Citizen" was chosen to bring Citizen watches closer to the hearts of all people across the globe. Today, Citizen is just that - a favorite watch of people across the globe.
    Citizen is the largest watchmaker and as many as two-thirds of all watches in the world are powered by Citizen's Miyota. Although most watches are "somewhat" Citizen, only watches made in Japan carry the Citizen label on the dial - a symbol of unparalleled quality and advanced technology.

      I have had the Seiko SKX for over ten years now. It does not keep time well in my watch winder but, once I start wearing it for a day or two it keeps perfect time. I also have a Seiko Pogue that I got in ‘78, and it keeps time very nicely. The Pogue taught me to not return it ti Seiko. I sent it back for a cleaning and crystal replacement. It came back with the small elapsed time dial floating around under the nice new crystal.

    Orient really needs to be noticed a lot more. If not for watch enthusiasts around social media platforms I would not have discovered that brand. My watch collection primarily consists of Casio and Timex watches and after getting my first mechanical watch in the form of a handed-down Seiko SKX015 my interest for automatic watches grew and so I bought a Gen. 2, Ver. 2 Orient Bambino (cream dial). I look forward to owning a few more automatic watches. I just hope that watchmakers such as Orient would be recognized more so that people like me can get their hands on affordable and quality watches.

    Bought the cream dial bambino because of this, still think Gen 2 is the best out of 4. Strap is a bit darker brown than expected but can always be switched out. There is a slight 3D effect that makes the center of the dial appear raised, but quite nicely and not in a gaudy way. Great recommendation by Federico!

    Wonderful review and so well-presented. I would throw the Bulova Lunar Pilot into the discussion. Incredibly accurate, mechanical/automatic 5 ticks-per-second chrono hand, beautifully constructed, detailed dial, and a bracelet that looks like--but better constructed--the original Omega Speedmaster bracelet.

    Dear Federico, I really appreciate you put the Vostok Amphibia in your list. With its wobbling crown, it's a beast, and you choose the scuba dude dial (I really love also the white and red radio room operator one). I really agree on your choices! Maybe I'd've added a sixth one, with the Invicta brand on the dial, but you know, it's not always original design and can make some more purist watch lovers turn their noses up... Thank you for your always interesting videos! Stay safe!

    It was cool to see a Vostok on your list. I picked up a heavily worn manual-wind Kommanderski at an Afghan bazaar in 2006. It has a black dial with a small gray Tu-160 Blackjack on it and very ornate stamping on the back. All of the chrome is gone from the body which just makes it cooler. It was just too unique to pass up so I put a black crocodile strap on it and wore it a lot until it stopped keeping good time. The quality isn’t great (noticeable flaw at 11 o’clock on the crystal, timekeeping issues, etc.), but it’s one hell of a unique watch and I just need to get it regulated. Given the damage and the fact that it is Russian and was purchased in Afghanistan, I always wondered what happened to its original owner. Maybe I don’t really want to know. Anyway, keep up the great videos!

I love it, but I find digital watches are a bit soulless. They aren't alive like a mechanical watch, you can't hear them, you can't interact with them.

    • @tthaas
      @tthaas 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I commented above, and I'll repeat -- if you look at a Vostok, the best thing you can do to adjust the bracelet is throw it away and buy a strap or replacement bracelet for it (Amphibia on a shark mesh or silicone diver's strap looks awesome, as does NATO/Zulu/Perlon). I owned several now, and love the watch heads... but the bracelets pull hair, they have sharp edges that will cut you, they are just uniquely terrible. So it's not $70 for a watch, it's $70 plus buying a replacement strap.

    • @redletterl78

      Agree - bracelet goes straight in the bin! The other minor annoyance is the lack of quick date setting 🙄. Otherwise the Amphibia is a fun watch to wear. Komandirskie and Retro series have some great designs too.

    Very well considered recommendations, IMHO. I'd particularly 2nd Frederico's recommendation of the Swatch Sistem51 series. I agree that most of the negative sentiment regarding Sistem51 is from those who don't get the concept. The thing is, these have very good accuracy, and an 90 hour power reserve. The closed/sealed case design and plastic escapement parts are appropriate for a watch selling for $150, because no one in their right mind would want to pay several hundred $ to service a $150 watch (the only economically sensible option is to replace with a new watch, and the plastic parts are used because they will operate in-spec without lubrication for a longer period than jeweled metal escapement that requires service every 5 years or so). Yes, the design reduces cost of production, so one can frame it negatively as a 'cheaply built watch', but it's fairer to think of the design as wholly appropriate for a watch that retails for less than the cost of regular service.
    One caveat is that the 51 part movement *might* be improved by the addition of a couple more parts, as it's time-set features are buggy... you have to set the watch about a minute ahead before pressing in the crown, because the minute hand doesn't resume for about a minute. This seems true with all of the Sistem51s. I think Swatch would have fixed this by now if it were possible to do so, but the problem seems to come about as a side effect of reducing the number of parts in the gear train. I've gotten use to it, but it's a pain in the posterior to set these (*very* *accurate*) watches accurately.

      @@PeteNice29 Maybe define what you mean by 'respectable brands'. You'll be hard pressed to find a wide set of options from AP, Patek, Rolex, Omega, etc if you set the floor at $3K, so I'm really struggling to make sense of this take. Your comment implies you haven't done the research to justify the statement to begin with. Seiko, Citizen, Orient, Casio, Hamilton, etc...these are all widely praised, historical brands that offer tremendously successful and popular choices well below the price point you refuse to go under. Feel bad for you b/c you've clearly wasted a lot of money "thinking" you've found the best value when in fact, you've intentionally closed yourself off from a whole new world of experiences at a price point that doesn't kick you in the nuts. If you have the money and you prioritize it towards higher end watch collecting, then more power to you. But holy cow, to claim that anything less than $3K from respectable brands is beyond snobbery b/c I think snobbery implies one is at least knowledgeable of the topic they exhibit the snobbery. You're just wrong.
