12:35 That's actually the fuel tank. The heavy battery is placed beneath the rear seats and in front of the rear axle to achieve a decent weight distribution. The fuel tank was therefore moved up there.
So sad that VW does not offer this in North America. VW wants NA to have sedans, the Golf hatchback and SUV, but many people would much prefer this vehicle. PHEV are a great choice for many commuters that can charge at home or work, but have long distance gasoline power when needed. Thanks for showing us what we can't have in NA and the lovely German countryside. Neat to see all the bicycle riders. 🙂
If you look at the statistics you'll find that the sales of estate wagons have basically collapsed in the US (compared to Europe etc). SUVs rule the day in NA. There's been quite a dramatic change the last 20 years. So it's understandable that VW doesn't consider it worth the bother to offer this car to a population that doesn't buy it.
@@seybertooth9282 Still sad. 😥 Given that this a PHEV I'm sure VW could sell many more of these than Mazda sells Miata MX5. Niche market cars do sell, if you offer them. PHEV is a very popular choice in NA, just look at sales of the Japanese and Korean makes. Oh well, I have a 2019 Golf Sportwagen that gets 43 US gallon mpg so at least I do have an economical station wagon, but would be nice if I could drive locally with electricity.
if it has 13kwh batery... so it takes 13 on full charge. Full charge is 45 km. If i do calculations its aprox 28.8 kwh per 100km so u can calculate how much it will be from ur grid in money. For me it is aprox 25cents a kwh. Result is 7.2 euros per 100km. My 2.0 diesel does aprox 9.3 eur 100km driveing 90 percent out of the cities. Is it worth it? How much does electric sistem compares maintenance ways with diesels?
Hi, you are talking about if it make sense driving in GTE mode when the battery is empty, fact is that when you keep the car in GTE mode the car will automatic keep the batteri about half charged, so you always have the boost from the electric engine ready. Driving a Golf GTE 2017 fantastic car ;-)
The reason why you can't go too e-mode in the beginning, is because the petrol engie is cold and it need to get some heat before you can turn it off. If you stop, turn off the car, and then start it again, then you can drive it on pure electric again.
@@autogefuel yes, I wonder the same thing when I test drive the old one. Some owner later say it was because the engie have too get some heet before it turn off. The reason is too prevent some engie problem, smart thing. Some question: some differens in driving experience compare too the old one and did you hear the fake engie sound inside the car?
the car is smart but should communicate better with the driver. if it doesn't, people start guessing and may get athe wrong idea. or just not like/buy the car.
this (the combustion engine not shutting off when it's cold) happens all the time when the combustion engine hasn't been used for a few hours/days. the engine won't be turned off for a couple of minutes after the engine first starts. I'm betting all regular hybrid cars do this. the hybrid drive (shutting off the combustion engine when the power needed by car at that moment is too low than the engine generates) is only activated if the engine is hot enough and lubricated properly so it can be smoothly started/stopped.
I`ve driven this car for years in Finland. Actually it starts straight at e-mode even when the temperature is somthing like -12 celcius. Sometimes even lower than that. If the temperature is -17 or more it will go to 1,4turbo engine first, briefly.
Why is this car not being brought to Australia? Average commute to work is 40km which the Passat GTE can handle in EV mode, and yet sometimes you need to drive 900km, again which can be handled by the petrol engine. It's perfect for Australia as we don't have a very extensive EV charger network except for Teslas. Hard to understand VW's logic.
I have Passat Variant GTE 2016 200000km. I like, nice look exterior and interior, comfortable car and efficiency. E-mode power 85kw 115hp 330Nm 0-100=11sec. Now range after 6years my Pasaat GTE travel 30-35km dependent on temperature outside, still driving, but driving on flat floors travel more 40km,normally speed no more 80km/h. Now full cheange battery range estimated on board 46-48km. For family car power engine 160kw 218hp 400Nm 0-100=7sec its verry good. GTE 2015 battery 9.9kw/h,not too big but for short trip it's ok. Now I like Arteon Plug hybrid, its seam engine and power but batery 13kw and and possibly travel to 60km eco and 50-55 real km. GTE-mode its verry faster and on simply Stage 1 Passat GTE I have 280hp,but too much power to front axes Look to my Passat GTE 2016 on my TH-cam channel.
The problem with electric driving you had was probably because the battery wasn't full enough. I drive my passat GTE in the winter with heating on full electric without any issues
My question is: I am planning to buy a GTE, but foremost for driving on pure E mode in the city (most of the week). Is this possible or will it force the petrol engine for example because the AC?

GTE comes with a higher standard in interior so obviously the starting price of 45000€ does not mean that Battery plus Motor cost 13000€ if you compare it to the base passat. In fact, it is only a roughly 2000€ difference if fully equipted. The price then is about 65.000€
Great video as per normal and what a nice car but I do not know what to do. Do we go for one these a white one with DSG and a Pano Roof, will we be going round in a old mans car? Will I get bored driving it? Big step Thomas. By the way, I have driven the same route as you down past the railway line on touring holidays, Happy Days. Cheers for now Thomas, regards Rob.
The Mazda is a nice car, but the infotainment and analog instrumentation cluster makes it feel 10yrs old. But all Japanese maufacturers has that problem.

Difference on Passat GTE 2015 and Passat GTE 2019 facelifted...
Front/back bamper
Front/back optical

Digital cokpit
Steering wheel simply and sensor
Climate block sensor
And verry importantly battery 13kw/h
what was the best year for efficiency in the Passat PHEV
as in; how far you can go on the electric range?
Very good and useful test!

Shame this car is not sold in the US. Especially with current sky high gas prices and rising, VW would make a killing with this car.
When will they sell this in the US?
Never. Americans want SUVs
Never,, maybe the driveline but not this car. American passat is smaller and much worse car
till what speed it can go in pure EV mode?
84mph
why no diesel phevs, vw?
great review as usual. What is the loaded price of this car in Europe? Is the V60 wagon comparable in size, but how much more $$ in plug-in PHEV?
Thanks! Really depends on market pricing and benefits. Yes V60 would be comparable
