  • Your differential fluid change on the Honda Rancher starts with the right parts. Get them here: bit.ly/honda-rancher-rear-diff-1
See how to change the front diff oil and final drive gear oil on your Honda Rancher TRX 420. We’ll start by changing the front diff oil on our Rancher. John will show you how to drain the fluid and then refill it with fresh Honda drive shaft oil.
Then, we’ll turn our attention to changing the final drive oil on our Rancher 420. This involves removing a skid plate underneath the rear drive and then removing the drain bolt and a check bolt. Then, we’ll refill the rear drive.
The oil capacity of the front diff on a 2012 Rancher 420 is about 8 oz., but you’ll simply fill it until it starts to run out of the fill opening. The rear drive oil capacity on the Rancher 420 is about 2.5 oz., but here we’ll just fill it until it starts to run out of the check bolt opening. Then we’ll close it up.

Yours is an excellent presentation of how to perform this fluid change. I would like to add one thing that's associated with the differentials - the vent hose. This is an excellent time to verify that the vent hose is connected to the differential and that it's in good shape. My rear differential began rattling and it had to do with the vent hose breaking loose and water/mud being sucked into the differential when I drove through a wet area. Not knowing the vent hose had come loose, I didn't know of the damage. This is an easy check and might save your other viewers the expense of a new differential. Thank you again!

I did this to my rancher. But the front i coultnt find the weep hole so i put in the same amount as the rear about 1/2 the bottle or 4oz. I guess im short 3 oz and need to fill up the front more.

Is the gear oil supposed to be flowing out of the check hole or just dripping? And if just dripping should I let the excess oil flow out until it's a drip?

    Hi John, team
Thank you for your videos, I am writing to you from Argentina. I need to change the rear differential oil seals of a Honda Rancher 420, it is necessary to remove the suspension arms to replace the seal 91251-HP5-601 (39x70x11)?
    Thanks in advance

Is it possible to over fill the rear differential? I had to pour almost an entire bottle of oil in, 8oz, before it came out the weep hole. I’m running a 15 Rancher.

My rear dif oil was way above the weep hole , I assume it was water , what would have to be replaced to stop water from getting through rear end ?

    • @brodytrump9658

There’s not much you can do to keep water out of the rear diff just change it regularly and it’ll be fine
