Thanks for the character assassination Jon! For the record, I did not cheat at Catan. I was the banker so I knew everyone’s resource cards for the most opportune monopol entwicklung moment.
Your word choice is awfully suspicious - "You've accused me of cheating at many games throughout this video. I firmly deny that I cheated at one of them. The rest... " And we all know the banker is categorically the most likely to cheat in any given board game. You have therefore been found guilty and your sentence is to play Twilight Imperium (with all expansions of course) with 6 other players suffering crippling levels of analysis paralysis.
I want to say that every video or content you do is very smart, catching and full of soul... While others try to be the number 1 of board games you just go and share what you are and what you love even if it is ridiculous or funny. Sharing you sometimes is not as easy as you always do! Greetings from Mexico!
John watches Smosh as well?!?! Celebrities! They are just like us! /s I love your channel, John! The 100k subs at this point is more than deserved! I hope you get more and more success. Being able to learn about you is pretty neat. Thanks for being open and sharing things about yourself. Keep the videos coming! I enjoy them oh so much! Congrats!
I discovered Smosh pit and Smosh games just a few weeks ago and have been binging them a lot since, I feel so happy knowing that someone I have been watching for years (you) feels the same about them as I do :)
Finally! The mention I've been waiting for all this time. Weird to think you and my Dad have a direct route of communication to discuss board game options... Love you man. Glad to be part of the journey and very very proud of you.
I think I was 7 or 8 the first time I broke down in tears at the thought of dying. For many years I had episodes of crippling anxiety about it. It kept me up more than a few nights. It's not really a bother anymore though; I've just decided I'm never going to die. But no, you're not alone.
This felt comforting and warm, like two friends reminiscing, while also being vulnerable enough to give me the illusion that we actually have a close friendship. Thank you.
Mentioning your panic about dying really struck me, since I've been dealing with a nearly identical mental state for a year or so now. Glad to know that you and Rita Ora know what it's like, and that you seem to be in a better state now.
If it helps, it's called Existential Death Anxiety. I struggle with it myself, and just like John, I found that talking to a professional (in my case, a psychologist), and receiving anti-anxiety medication helped immeasurably. But, I'm Australian and seeking out mental healthcare is free (under the right circumstances). If you don't have easy access to therapy, I recommend seeking out guides on selfcare, meditation, grounding exercises and breathing exercises - and even if it is expensive, for some medication is the best option. You're not alone. And, in my personal experience, loneliness is one of the key stimuli that triggers existential death anxiety in me, and I guarantee that there's a lot more people out there like us than John, Rita Ora, and a random TH-cam commenter from Australia.
Your mental health story is pretty similar to mine and I think alot of people struggle without telling it, so I know your words here can be very important. I still have panic attacks but not regular. I dont think you should feel a need to get rid of it but rather learn to live with it. Thanks for a great video mate 🙂😀
The panic attacks about death made me feel very seen, after losing my mother a few years ago the thought that Im going to die has consumed ny mind. I'm seeing a therapist now and am getting in a better place day by day but it did get me to start taking my health more seriously which I appreciate
Jon I'm so flattered and delighted by your generous mention. You even used a photo that showed a younger and less wrinkly version of myself! I feel proud to have played a small part in your path from boardgame newbie to indispensable boardgame pundit.
Yes, US sitcoms have fancy writer rooms and are more polished, yet UK has gave us "The Work Outing" from IT Crowd. The funniest sitcom episode ever made.
“I was convinced I was never going to return to my former self” sums it up well. I used to have a crippling fear of death (that still lingers but doesn’t disable me as much as it use to) it would often come after a peak of joy and hit like raging rapids after a pleasant paddle down a river. I generally love life’s smorgasbord of experiences and think that contributes to the starker contrast on feelings on the downside. Good to hear there’s three of us now that occasionally suffer from it 😉
This is a really unique video Jon, thanks for sharing these things about yourself. Even if I don’t suffer from anxiety myself, I can imagine that your positive way of talking can help people suffering from it. There are a lot of Boardgame channels on TH-cam now, but yours is still something special. Your videos are way funnier, but also feel more honest or ‘intimate’. I started fast forwarding videos from other channels, but never do that with yours - I actually check several times each month if there’s a new video available. Thanks again for the great video, would be great to play a game with you and Will. 😂
You mentioned three of my all time favorite videos: the Pandemic Legacy song, the Board Game Ambassador, and the one where you look exhausted and relaxed after surviving the Board Game Tent weekend. The Ambassador one is so on point. As new fanatics of gaming my husband and I at parties constantly give each other the side eye and whisper, "Catan, that's the party line!" My all time favorite is your video about how games are better now than in the past; it motivated me to try board games again.Well done, congratulations!
Its funny being like “oh yeah that one! That was a good one”. There’s been so many good ones. I remember the one for couples and another for Christmas being particularly funny. Anytime the girlfriend or parents characters are in, its always a good time. I particularly love the dad character showing how much he doesn’t care for anyone else :)
I only discovered your channel a few months ago, but I've loved your humor and reviews! I got Chronicles of Chrime for Christmas thanks to you. Congrats on the 100k. I think you would really enjoy the comedy channel/streaming service Dropout. A few of the people from smosh are regulars on Dropout and it's a great group of comedians let loose to make all sorts of improv and lightly scripted content.
Anxiety is horrible, ive been there and unfortunately am in there again. I also cant play a game or listen to much music when im like this or it'll tarnish the game or music with that feeling. Glad to hear you are out the other side, i was for maybe 10 years but its bit me hard again at the moment. Thank you for the video.
Thank you Jon for sharing your experience with anxiety. Just like you, I've been suffering from panic/anxiety attacks, major depression, bipolar disorder. There was a time when I lost all motivation to live and do things I usually love. And boardgaming is one of my therapies that got me back my emotional and mental equilibrium. ❤
Oh man... I've seen those older videos. My goodness... You mean???? I've been watching you THAT long? Well, you know.... as they say.... Time flies when you're having fun! Yup, it's been fun. Thanks for your channel. Congrats on your milestone. And, thank you for sharing.
Thanks for talking about mental health. I suffered my first panic attack one month ago and I am still recovering from it. I believe it is going to be really helpful to see that you overcame it and how you did it
Congratulations on 100k. This was such a nice way to celebrate. I think I've seen all your videos since being introduced with the "why boardgames are better now" one, including the earlier sketches. Going straight on to rewatch the play with yourself video after this. It's been a tough 18 months, but this channel makes me look forward and miss playing with friends a little less.
You know, it's refreshing hearing a content creator recommend his older videos while expressly liking them. In the majority of the time I hear TH-camrs absolutely hating their older work after having spent so much time editing and rerecording parts of it in the past.
Interesting! I usually hate them when I'm editing them, then if the response is good I like them again. Now that much time has passed I can't remember how much they annoyed me when making them so I like them again. Except some are a little cringe in places, I'm mostly proud of them.
Thanks for this Jon! I can relate to a lot of this. I also did some community radio based out of a hospital in my home town when I was younger. It had started before me in the hospital but over time the range of the signal had been extended with a new antenna and had a much bigger reach. Anyways, the guy that ran it treated it like his own little empire and while he wasn't a bad guy, he could be quite intimidating at times and had all these rules about stuff. And I don't mean the obvious things like "don't swear or play any songs with swearing" but lots of really minor insignificant things that I honestly can't even remember all of them now.
In advance, sorry for my broken/bad english. Thanks for all the puns, the comedy, the passion on your videos, the lists and on top of all, the honesty on this hobby, where the sponsored content just make us buy boardgames and their expansions instead of trying new games or even finish the base one. I'm new to this and finding your channel was refreshing and at the same time, like having a warm and brutally honest conversation with a long time friend. Thanks for this and congrats for the 100K subscribers, I'm glad to be one of them. Greetings from Chile!
Just discovered you recently (thank the algorithm gods), and love the channel. I always like when my favorite yt channels have a couple videos like this. Often they are AMAs that they do every couple of years. You end up liking yt channels because of the person’s vibe, and these videos are like those meaningful conversations with a friend where you get to know them better (albeit parasocially on yt).
Thank you for all you do. I just came back from Super Magfest in the US. All sorts of gamers, but I actually went to the board gamer section and it was fantastic. You have gotten me over my fear of being a board game geek, and met people just like me. Also bought Sagrada and actually had a nice convo about you to the board game merchant. Thank you!!!
Thanks for the video~ I’ve recently loved your videos and now I can appreciate your humor and quick lines as they are written by you! Have a great 2024!
Congrats Jon! It's been great watching your channel grow. We love your sense of humor and appreciate the ample number of laughs you have provided to us over the years. Looking forward to watching for many more years to come. Cheers Buddy!
Thank you so much for this video, Jon. I've watched you for several years and this video made me actually click the button to (finally) subscribe. You have influenced me a lot, particularly your wit and wisdom for which I'm slowly trying to abide by. Yes, my addiction still pulls at me having only come into this hobby in 2015 - sleeving, buying, SHELVES of unplayed games that I simply had to have due to being out of print or FOMO, etc. Thank you for your jovial demeanor as well - must be a blast to play games with you. That's why I do it, to have fun. Although my wife of 33 years and my 24-year-old son say the only purpose of a game is "to win" (therefore I rarely do). Best wishes to you from La Crosse, WI (USA).
15:17 I still have my copy of Hotels and my brothers Micro Machines that we used instead of the cars are still in it. I need to get it out it for a play.
Superb, I’m so pleased the channel is getting some of the recognition it deserves. Yours was always the first channel I sent customers at the board game game towards. Kudos on your open heartedness regarding your mental health. It was a perfect balance of honesty and groundedness.
Congrats on 100k and thanks for sharing about your life! The Board Game Song was one of the first of your videos I watched (that may be how I found you?) and it's still one of my favorites too - I was very impressed by how you managed to do the rhymes and meter!
@@actualol that makes sense! I was inspired by your song and tried to make a collection song to a Hamilton song - I organized my games by rhyming sound (as maybe syllables too) and got a couple verses but never finished and my collection has changed so much since then 😅
Late to the party (and actually fairly new to the board gaming, and your channel) but I really enjoyed this video. You've such a great knack for storytelling. As somebody with anxiety and going through a pretty bad period at the moment, I appreciated your honesty and openness about your own mental health struggles. I'm glad I subscribed! :-)
This was great. I have been catching your videos for years now, and the combination of your reviews/ideas about the industry and your jokes keep me coming back. Cheers to an original channel and more videos in the future.
I don't know why this was so compelling, but I watched the whole thing and it was really sweet and touching! Jon, you have a real knack for being in front of the camera and connecting to the audience through it, and I bet you'd have success addressing any subject matter (although your games content is really good). Thanks for sharing this!
As someone who went to Poole Grammar School (we had a KFC) and Bristol. Freinds are people you lose when getting older, I also moved the other side of the world. Thanks for sharing here is to the next 100k.
Awesome Video! this is one of my favorite board game channels on TH-cam and I have to say the 100k subscribers are well deserved and I hope you get more because you deserve it! it is awesome to have learn more from you and you have given me a lot of inspiration and great recommendations to look up! greetings from Guatemala and keep up the good work!
I felt the exact same way the first time I stumbled upon BGG. How did this incredible world that I had been yearning for exist without me ever knowing about it. It was all going on behind my back!! How??
I loved this video! So lovely to hear a little more about who you are as a person. I’m happy to hear your anxiety has receded mostly. I had anxiety myself and honestly felt like I was dying, it’s always comforting to know you’re not alone. Thanks for sharing bits of yourself with us!
Thanks for sharing! Its always interesting to see how people got to the place they are and what a winding path it truly is. Also appreciate the mention of dealing with anxiety and finding effective treatments and support. The wedding photos were gorgeous and loved the umbrella shots lol Congrats on your baby girl and keep on keepin on 😊
Loved this "something different" video. How lovely to hear such personal stories. I also highly recommended Jon's older videos - definitely where he plays all the members of the gaming family - bring back Timmy! - is what i say 😊. Great video Jon, congrats on 100k & this is a great celebration 🌟 🎉
Great video Jon, and congratulations on this amazing milestone! Thanks for the nostalgic look back at Salisbury and that bloody school 😅 as well as the fun London days back in the 00s. Here's to the next 100k!
I’m from Salisbury too and also went to Brockenhurst college! It’s so strange to see a TH-camr who has had such a similar upbringing to you lol. Great video and congrats on 100k!
love the story with catan! especially interesting as a german living in the UK btw your humour is spot on - i said before u talked about the sitcom. indeed and we glad to hear it. quite the bangers u push out. really great video hearing about this stuff and the joy in your voice. and omg, one of the earliest games i played, was Hotel. havent since than. agree with u, was same for me with the game. glad u went better in ur mental health, relate.
The Pandemic Legacy song is the best creative thing that has ever been done about board games. I’ve listened to it countless times. It’s catchy and funny and kinda perfect.
Thanks Jon, and congratulations on the subscriber milestone. Im still relatively new to the hobby (bought my first modern board game during original lockdown) and so id like to thank you for being one of my earliest guides
Thanks for sharing! We have a lot in common (tv writer, love of games, anxiety), which doesn’t surprise me. I love your channel, and it’s played a big role in building my enthusiasm for games, which I pass on to as many people as I can.
Wonderful video and thanks for sharing. Identified myself in many of your chapters and helped to have some else experience the same feelings. Wish you all the best, and will look at back catalogs. Congrats on a great life story, and much more to come. 😊
I have thoroughly enjoyed the video. I too once started as a video game player and subsequently found out about board games (with similar feelings as you did, how on earth did I not know these exists all these time) The way I found out board game was a little different though. There was one day where I looked at my little one bored and I thought, perhaps playing some board games can teach them be a smarter person? And hey it will make me less bored as well! And once I started I begin buying games for myself 😂😂
I played the original catan in German too!! I lived in Germany when I was 4-8 and learned the game when I was 5 (the year it came out!). I just tried to collect lots of sheep and didn’t play properly but they were great memories
I really enjoy watching your videos from the USA. I loved getting to know you more and being fairly new to your channel, looks like I have some other videos to watch! Keep up the great content!
American here - our wives have the same favorite games!! (Partially because she saw Tobago on one of your videos, pointed, and said, “I want that game.”). Thanks for the content!!
I’m just curious where the rock climbing bit came from. My climbing friends introduced me to modern board games and now I’m just obsessed with both climbing and board games.
No way! You wrote Popatron! A friend of mine also wrote/produced that And yes, it was much better than you’d expect - very good in fact! Shame it can’t be found anywhere anymore
Congratulations. Hands down my favourite board game channel. More integrity then half the channels put together. I really really appreciate that you don’t take money or anything else from companies. Congratulations again!!
Congratulations on the 100K Subscribers! Thank you for sharing things about your personal life. Surely, it will help some people and give them courage.
Thanks for this candid video. I love your videos and this was a lovely jaunt into the man behind the content. Thanks for doing what you do and for your passion for this hobby.
Thank you! This video moved me a lot 🙂 Stories really can give comfort. Speaking of comfort. Your recommendations showed me a way into board games, that I never thought of. My partner and I had wonderful evenings because of your work!
Whoo!!!🎉 Way to go Jon! I’ve loved your content and humour for years and it’s so great to see you finally get to 100K, you deserve triple that and then some🙌🏻🎉
I'm really looking forward to this video. I resonate with your game choices so have really appreciated everything that has come so far. I have wondered who you are and where you come from
My first modern board game was betrayal at the house on the hill, player it with friends about 14 years ago. Havent player it in a long time, then I played settlers of catan which was a fave for a long time. I have followed you for a little over a year, have seen the Radcliff video which is a great one. Will check out the other videos you mentioned. Congratulations on getting 100K🎉 I like sitcoms best from the U K. Coupling, the it crowd, Black books. I think the americans make good comedy films.
Thanks for sharing all this background, it was interesting! I originally found you because you’re friends with someone I used to work with and he told me about you when he found out I like board games
What a wonderful self-sectional video. Enjoyed this very much, and will now go watch every single one of your other videos (especially “I’m Timmy The Unpunchable!” …”I shoot Timmy.”, at which my entire family laughed so hard we sustained internal injuries.)
Wonderful video! Thank you for sharing these moments in your life. And I used to love the game Hotels (although I only remember the fun of placing the buildings and not so much how to play). 😁

Finally! The mention I've been waiting for all this time. Weird to think you and my Dad have a direct route of communication to discuss board game options...
Love you man. Glad to be part of the journey and very very proud of you.
I don't recall which video it was, but this is the second time I heard Jon mention you and your father's board game collection.
Love you too! But Will commented first, so he wins this round...
It's funny because in a weird twist Will's dad got me into gambling! I'll make a video about that sometime 😂

I had a spreadsheet and l counted out the syllables for every game I owned and every country to match them up!
You are a brilliant writer and I’m thankful I get to watch your work every time!
This was great. I have been catching your videos for years now, and the combination of your reviews/ideas about the industry and your jokes keep me coming back. Cheers to an original channel and more videos in the future.
7:05 Wow Gumball😮😃 I wasn't expecting that. I'll rewatch those episodes again
Thank you for sharing, and for all content through the years. Nice video.
Glad you like it, thank you.
Lovely video Mr P. honest and open.... and brave to put out into the ether, many wouldn't have that courage to share like that.
Great video and congrats on 100k!
love the story with catan! especially interesting as a german living in the UK
btw your humour is spot on - i said before u talked about the sitcom. indeed and we glad to hear it. quite the bangers u push out.
really great video hearing about this stuff and the joy in your voice.
and omg, one of the earliest games i played, was Hotel. havent since than. agree with u, was same for me with the game.
glad u went better in ur mental health, relate.
Amazing video! Thank you so much for sharing all those stories. I will always be a huge fan of your videos! Can't wait for more!
That's crazy. I had assumed you were at like a million already. 🎉 Congrats 🎉
Congrats on the 100k mark Jon! Loved all of the old videos suggestions too! Glad you brought them to my attention. All the best for the future!
Thanks Jon for an insight into your life and why you do what you do 😀 This is also the best non-gaming gaming video ever. Keep up the good work 😀
I have thoroughly enjoyed the video. I too once started as a video game player and subsequently found out about board games (with similar feelings as you did, how on earth did I not know these exists all these time)
The way I found out board game was a little different though. There was one day where I looked at my little one bored and I thought, perhaps playing some board games can teach them be a smarter person? And hey it will make me less bored as well! And once I started I begin buying games for myself 😂😂
Well this was a very pleasent feel-good-video. It seems that a lot of people got into boardgaming around the same time, early 2010s.
worked on gumball? and a fan of Arrested Development AND Happy Endings. it all makes sense now. Here's to the next 100K!
You have fine taste my friend!
A friend of mine also wrote/produced that
And yes, it was much better than you’d expect - very good in fact!
Shame it can’t be found anywhere anymore
wishing you the best mate, you've introduced me to many fun games
Congratulations. Hands down my favourite board game channel. More integrity then half the channels put together. I really really appreciate that you don’t take money or anything else from companies. Congratulations again!!
Congratulations on the 100K Subscribers! Thank you for sharing things about your personal life. Surely, it will help some people and give them courage.
Awesome! I will definitely check out those other videos. I always love hearing peoples stories. I think your skits are brilliantly hilarious.
It's a great pleasure to know more about you. Thank you for sharing this with us and congratulations!
Great video, thanks for sharing. My fav of your vids has to be the 10 Mistakes Most Board Gamers Make. keep em coming.
Such a nice video Jon. Every anecdote is interesting and hearing your tastes is very fun
Thank you for such a nice comment! 🙂
Congratulations on the 100k, and thanks for sharing so much that's so personal. Looking forward to the next milestone.
Congrats on such an exciting milestone!
I have wondered who you are and where you come from
Board Game Ambassador is the second best video on youtube. Right after Not Just For Geeks. It hits on so many levels.
Congratulations on getting 100K🎉
I like sitcoms best from the U K. Coupling, the it crowd, Black books. I think the americans make good comedy films.
this was a very heartwarming video. congrats on reaching 100K subscribers. happy to be one of them.
Thanks for sharing all this background, it was interesting! I originally found you because you’re friends with someone I used to work with and he told me about you when he found out I like board games
This was really special - thank you. And well deserved on the shiny metal thingy.
Thanks for sharingand congratulations on 100k!
Great video, John! Your tastes don’t always align with mine, but I always adore your content and perspective!
This video made me smile, I hope you are and continue to do well Jon.
Sweet vid, and nice of you to share about the anxiety issues. Congratulations on reaching this impressive milestone.
What a wonderful self-sectional video. Enjoyed this very much, and will now go watch every single one of your other videos (especially “I’m Timmy The Unpunchable!” …”I shoot Timmy.”, at which my entire family laughed so hard we sustained internal injuries.)
Thank you so much for sharing this! Love this video and love your content
Wonderful video! Thank you for sharing these moments in your life. And I used to love the game Hotels (although I only remember the fun of placing the buildings and not so much how to play). 😁
I was going to do snark.
Instead, I'm going to tell you that you are way more interesting than the dice tower.
Congrats.
Loved that ta! Also I was in my local town of Salisbury the other day and noticed the Burger King has now gone.
Thank you for this video. Many greetings from germany.
Love this, love you, thank you!
