also if you do want to buy someone a game, ask them what they want. it may remove the surprise but it's still nicer for them to get what they want for christmas
On the topic of #3 - a few years ago I was having a generally tough time with life, just hectic and a bit down, and my wife secretly organised a game day for me. She got a close friend who lived an hour away to come stay for the day and night, nd some local friends too. She made a schedule of some of my favourite games, put up bunting and spent all day cooking for us all and bringing us snacks. It was absolutely delightful and once of the best gifts I have ever received
Thats a keeper of a wife. My best man did the same for my bachelor party. Got a few friends together, we all went out to a game cafe and played all day having fancy coffees and old fashions. So fun. Youre the man Steve!
"I don't have a small table - by European Standards. In Texas, it's sold as a foot rest". That, sir, just got me officially subscribed after watching you for weeks now 😂
Similar to the significant difference between the Mounties at the Canada-US border asking “How many guns do you have?” vs “How many guns do you have WITH YOU?” …”8” to a Texan is a kid-sized collection. To anyone else, it’s a full size collection.
Seconded. This may be my first TH-cam comment EVER, because you highlighted a few things ( I really hope one can get SENET in the States) I either hadn’t heard of, or hadn’t quite considered. This is a really thoughtful video with serious thought behind it, and a ton of very sly humor. Texas footrest indeed. Please consider doing this again next year!
On accessories: If you know someone who owns and regularly plays Gloomhaven but has not yet bought something to organize all the frigging tokens, it's literally the perfect gift. Saves an hour at least every time.
i just want to say, from all the boardgameingchannels I watch, I respect your recommendations, opinions, and you as a person the most. Thank you for your time and dedication. Wish you all the best
I’ve been subscribed since I chatted to them at UKGE a couple of years ago and it’s great and doesn’t feel like glorified marketing like many magazines do.
This is a fantastic list. It’s flexible enough to be generic or specific to cater to your gamer and easy to understand by non gamers. Also the jokes are fun 😂
One of the best things I could want as a board gamer is a nice organizer. Especially for big games or ones with tons of components, it is so nice to have something that helps setup/takedown so I spend more time playing, and helps make the table space cleaner and nicer in game. Those token holders you showed are nice for the general smaller game, but something custom for a game with a lot of pieces, like TI4 or Arnak, is so nice.
Great list, thank you! We use most of the accessories on your list regularly. We also often use dice cups (made for us by our daughter when she was in elementary school), a manual card shuffler (invaluable for cards that are not great quality or hard to shuffle and just for saving wear and tear on any cards - mine is old but indestructible), a big piece of thick craft felt for the table (instead of a big neoprene mat...easy to get, inexpensive, easy to cut to size), and a sand timer to politely put a timed end to analysis paralysis (someone in our family is very prone!).
This video was edited so last minute, the screencap for BGA is from the same day the video was published. They just released Terra Nova there. Happy Parenting, Jon!
It's actually the first TH-cam video that updates its b-roll in real-time, so if you watch it again tomorrow it will have changed to whatever BGA looks like then. If you don't believe me, come back and watch my video to see if I'm right.
First of all, great list! I'm literally sending the whole list (while highlighting my favourites) to my wife now because you're right, I'm pretty good on the number of games I have, but these would make the gaming nights themselves so much better. I also hadn't realized I wasn't subscribed on this account so I hope you get to 100K soon! You're a top channel on youtube
Tony's Chocolate is my favorite, too (for the taste as well as the more ethical sourcing of their cocoa). Excellent tip among a whole list of great ones!
I really don't see the need for Scout to be honest. Start with the cards , then make 2 stacks from the Scout and Show tokens to put sideways next to the cards, then dump the rest on top and perhaps give it a little wiggle. Works for me and seems faster than slotting every little token manually.
I literally just impulse-bought Scout 2 days ago and haven't played it yet; kinda cool I immediately happened upon a reference to it, and hoping I manage to get it put back into that teeny tiny box
I excitedly told my wife and it turns out we had it last year but didn't get it in the tin so I didn't know the name of it. Excitement diminished. But they have a new variant this year, so excitement replenished!
i’ve been lurking for awhile and this video got my subscription. I don’t always agree with the games you like. But I love the humor and passion you have. And you put a TON of work into these videos
On accesories.. small analog generic counters, the kind with two dials that go to 99.. are fantastic for a lot of games. Screw fiddling with 1, 3, 5 and 10 value money or tokens.
To add to #2, there are chocolate versions of board games out there, and while not as complex as their non-edible counterparts, they can still make for a nifty little breather game where people actually look forward to the end of game cleanup.
Honestly, the big take away for me from this video is the self-reflection. It's not a new thing you've brought to your content, but it definitely is very confronting this time. Yeah, I do feel like nuisance sometimes and I do feel like I'm the one who is more on the obsessed side of things than most of my friends. So it's nice to hear it's not a unique feeling to have!
I think you're in good company. I do think we're the outliers though. Let's be honest, anyone who collects, plays and then watches TH-cam videos about boardgames and related topics is probably in the obsessed category. Do you have a gaming group you can play with in your area? My wife doesn't mind the occasional game but definitely doesn't want to play as often as I like. I moved to a new area so had no friends who would play with me either. Once I found my boardgame group I've been able to play for hours almost every Monday.
Number 3 would be great for me (board game day). I have two games I've owed for at least 3 years that have never been played because they require 5 players minimum and the best I've ever gotten is 3 other people together at any time
I swear. Board game bag is a godsend. I used to haul my board games in my gym bag, but the boxes got damaged a bit. The bag however not only is more convenient but also makes sure the boxes are safe. It does look like a monstrosity though. So no place on fashion show. :D
"Foundations of Rome and two other games" will be the unit I will use in my Physics major from now on! It's hilarious that a game can be so big it becomes a unit of volume.
Token holders are not be underestimated. The wife got me a set of 7 hexagonal, resin-printed trays about 3.5 inches wide with magnets along the edges. They get brought out for probably 40% of the games we play and have really helped improve organization and accounting.
My friends and I found BGA during the height of covid, and it was honestly just what we needed. We had a group of 6 that played every Saturday and sometimes once during the week (with individuals dipping out as needed, but we never had less than 4). As a pretty severe introvert, it was absolutely perfect, with no need to do all the planning needed to house everyone in person (especially with literally all of my friends having different food allergies). Sadly, once things opened back up, we played less and less as people's lives got busy again. Now, none of the others want to play online, and I only play in person with two of the group every few weeks or so, and it's always the same game (Gloomhaven, which I love, but it'd be nice to mix it up). One of our group lives on the other side of the country, so I basically haven't had a chance to hang out with her since. All that to say that I'd love your third idea combined with the fourth - a surprise online game day sounds fantastic right about now.
The quality of your videos are truly excellent. The content is really well thought out and humourous and the production is amazing as well, they're just beautiful things to watch
Loved the video. You're always wonderful and entertaining. My suggestion, though it is very niche: They don't have it for very many games, but BGG has a series of artist posters for certain popular games that they commissioned. They're pricey, but they're high quality. AND most importantly: It's not just like. Putting the box art on a poster, they made em from the ground up. From what I remember there's Terraforming Mars, Everdell, Pandemic. Lots.
Excellent video John. Thanks for uploading. "...since you can't start a game night at the toilets at work..." Challenge accepted! Oh, and I'm still lol-ing so hard from the adult-with-a-fine-woollen-jumper looking at me like that!
My biggest takeaway was about BGA. I had never heard of it and I think this will really open me up to new games! Always have trouble syncing with friends to play and this will be huuuge!
Those most willing to play with me and my wife are very casual gamers, so Quacks is right up our alley. Those little cauldrons that HOLD THE INGREDIENT CARDS (what actually tipped us into buying them) actually made me say, "Take my money." They're on order. Great list and fun video. Thanks!
This is such a great video for so many different reasons. It’s given me some great gift ideas that I can casually drop into conversation with my friends and family. The humour had me tittering a few times. Although I’m worried I may have fallen down an Etsy rabbit hole.
Everybody Wins is an EXCELLENT book! It's a great history of board games, not just about the winners but also the runner ups and the other hot games of the time.
Be careful with 3 and 11, I once got a Game Night as a gift and it was so bad. It was at a point where I had too many board game time/friends for too little time. So there I was at my gift board game evening, sitting with people who clearly would have liked doing other stuff more. I don't blame them, it was one of the most awkward gaming sessions I've witnessed. Also the point of gifting me time to play board games for my birthday was weird for me right from the beginning. Most of my other friends just did that without needing a celebration. They would just come to my board game night without "doing me a favor". My recommendation is: If you gift this, don't just gift your time at the Game Night itself, but also before in preparation. Prepare e.g. their favorite food and call it a "Chocolate Cake Game Night". Then it's also a personal gift.
Came here after some absent time, just reduced my online time wich wasn't that much, 100 000 shines right into my eye. Congratulations John you deserved it.
Based on your video: 11 Gifts for Board Gamers we purchased a subscription and some backorders of SENET for ourselves as a holiday gift ;). We just received 2 backorders of the Summer and Autumn 2023 issues and WOW were we impressed. You are absolutely accurate on the content and quality of the publication. Thank You !
Thank you so much for an interesting list of gifts! Here I discovered Senet magazine and two other books about board gaming. And... I'm going to buy it for myself :D
If you do want to buy someone a game, see my Ultimate Christmas Gift Guide video: th-cam.com/video/QWcknGPezYk/w-d-xo.html
Any reason the site for those tasty tasty snacks wasn't listed? They looked really good!
also if you do want to buy someone a game, ask them what they want. it may remove the surprise but it's still nicer for them to get what they want for christmas

That is so adorable!! I think #3 (and the similar #11) might be my favourite two on the list
Sounds like Heaven on Earth
You made me cry

"Waste their time rock climbing when they have a perfectly good ladder" Had me
If I had happend to have a drink, I'd have spit-taked directly onto my keyboard. I love dry wit so much.
This is might be your best video yet. I love how the cost can be extravagant or cost nothing and yet bring the true meaning of giving a gift.
"One works night shifts, one is always wasting their time rock climbing and the third keeps emigrating just to look cool." I feel called out :D

Amen!
i just want to say, from all the boardgameingchannels I watch, I respect your recommendations, opinions, and you as a person the most. Thank you for your time and dedication. Wish you all the best
Thanks for reminding me we need a toilet brush. I also like the other 11 ideas!
I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your humor and writing! These videos are a master class!
Thank you! 🙂
This list is fantastic!!!! I had no idea what Senet was. I totally want that now.
I’ve been subscribed since I chatted to them at UKGE a couple of years ago and it’s great and doesn’t feel like glorified marketing like many magazines do.
I just bought three copies because of this video! Had no idea about them either!
Just ordered my subscription. Shipping costs for me are a little step but the magazine looks worth it.
9:45 I can also add "Building blocks of tabletop game design" from Geoffrey Engelstein and Isaac Shalev, great book
LOVE number 11. My wife's gift to me every year for my birthday is to play War of the Ring with me. ♥
I recently got one of those felt dice trays from Amazon. I had no idea how luxurious it would make me feel 😲😍
Number 5 and 8 are very good ideas indeed - thanks for including our products in your video!😄
First 5 issues of Senet ordered! Had no idea it existed and looks great. Thanks for the great list!
Came here to say this as well -- this magazine looks so right up my alley, I can't believe I'd never heard of it. I'll be checking it out as well!
Evoking "Reiner Knizia" every time something related to great designers show up, have already became a thing in this chanel
"Only gamers have a favourite polygon"
CGP Grey has entered the chat.
Amazing work as always. You just made a bunch of gamers' holidays.
I totally just bought that Scout organizer and those Burgle Bros bits as gifts for myself. 😂
Thanks for the Senet recommendation! That is going straight on my xmas list...
One I found specially frightening was Vladomir Harkonen from Dune. He is very cold and calculating
Tony's Chocolate is my favorite, too (for the taste as well as the more ethical sourcing of their cocoa). Excellent tip among a whole list of great ones!
It's the best!
It's always a pleasure when you receive a notification that Actualol has released a new video!
I subscribed to SENET. Love love love it. I'm new to board gaming and haven't heard of that before. Thanks for opening my eyes to it.
My favorite polygon is indeed the hexagon!
I’ve watched several of your videos and finally subbed because of this one. What a great list and I hope you meet your 100 K goal!
That organiser for Scout is pretty cool. 😍 Great list and as always top notch quality of the video.
I got excited when I saw that. I have a little ritual I perform to get the bits back in without lid lift so that would be really nice to have
Just bought this as well!

For the #7 - it is the same bag of a Cajon (the music instrument)! I got mine from amazon, i call it the saint seiya´s armor.
hahaha!!! clever and funny!
I so enjoy your clever humor. It has to be your superpower?
Thank you 🥰 I was bitten by a radioactive comedian.
M&S Very Merry Munch is a must on the snack list
I'd never heard of this! Now I will hunt it down with great speed. To M&S!

Well done. The best board game gift giving video I’ve seen this year.
That rucksack! I'm not sure I'm willing to give up the required dignity. Yet. 😅
1:23 Loved the Quintin Smith cameo 😂
Justice for other reviewers who wear glasses
I went back and checked, thinking I missed him. 😂
On accesories.. small analog generic counters, the kind with two dials that go to 99.. are fantastic for a lot of games. Screw fiddling with 1, 3, 5 and 10 value money or tokens.

This is the best "non-game gifts for board gamers" list that I've seen (at least this year). Good recs.
"Only gamers have a favourite polygon".
That's not true, mathematicians also have a favourite polygon - and it's also the hexagon.
But mathematicians should all be board gamers 😊
As a proud member of both the board game and mathematical communities, I concur. Hexagon is the bestagon.
@@abbynall7740was looking for bestagon representation :)
I love this list and since I love buying gifts for myself, I just bought myself four issues of Senet. ❤
I have a pie bag, I use as a game bag. Its basicly a big square shopping bag with cute pies on it. But its works great for board games.
That you wrote and delivered the line “That is better than any kind of sex” really cracked me up.
"And only gamers have a favourite polygon"? You forgot the mathematicians!
But then again, hexagons *are* the bestagons
"Only gamers have a favourite polygon". Categorically untrue. Everyone KNOWS that Hexagons are the Bestagons. Even bees.
I nearly passed out when I saw the way you turn pages in books. Shocking.
As a board gamer, this is an excellent list
Brilliant ideas, well thought out. Thanks
In line with your #9 the best thing my partner bought me was a inlay that allowed me to be put all my Codenames variations into one box 📦
That's true love.
"In Texas it's sold as a foot rest" 😂

It’s a game changer for playing with friends who live far away - or just that bit too far on weeknights!
I bought Everybody wins after watching your video and my boyfriend was really surprised and loved the idea. We are both reading it. Thank you !
"better than any kind of sex" -- dude, I feel depressed now that you said that and I was like "he's not entirely wrong!"
