    When you've been in the hobby for a while you kind of get used to seeing the same couple titles get mentioned by every reviewer. I've always admired how Jon stays true to his own tastes rather than simply chasing the hotness and gives some love to some underrated and less-talked-about titles. One of my most trusted reviewers in the business tbh

    • @actualol
      @actualol  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +28

      There's nothing normal about conforming! 😛

      That’s one thing I like about playing games with a group that are all older than me is we get to experience games that maybe have gone out of print or never made it to the US in the first place. As well as some more modern titles

    • @littleceasar9351
      @littleceasar9351 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      But a lot of times those games are popular because they’re very good games. Like Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys (if you live in USA) you see a ton of them because they are great cars. I will admit that Terraforming Mars is a textbook version of influencers latching onto an average game making it popular.

    • @blarneystone38
      @blarneystone38 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@littleceasar9351 It wasn't my intention to suggest those games were bad; I was more trying to say that many reviewers tend to cater toward the kind of games that make the BGG top 100, which I would broadly classify as 1) mid-to-heavyweight Euros with little player interaction and 2) campaign dungeoncrawlers. The games they cover are great for people who enjoy that style of game.
      What I appreciate about Jon's collection is that he's clearly very aware of what kind of game he likes and doesn't shy away from it even when it isn't the "norm." He's clearly much more of a social gamer and likes a lot of party games and games that are simpler rules-wise than your typical BGG darling. Like, other than GOT, I'm not sure he has any games here that are more than a 3 on BGG's weight scale.
      So yeah, not trying to talk badly about games that are popular, more trying to say I appreciate that he highlights different styles than you normally come across!

    The thing I love about party games is that even people who have bad experiences with boardgames, want to give it a go sometimes. We played herd mentality with my side of the family and after a few rounds my dad shouted: "I'm actually good at this game!" Which was so fun :) (the reason he was good at it is because he is so predictable we started writing down the answer we thought he would write just to get a point 😂)

If a 4 to 6 player game can be stored in a standard sized box (ie a box with dimensions of lets say wingspan, great western trail, terraforming mars, meadow, ticket to ride, etc.), put it into a standard size box so that my game display looks clean. Thanks for the video. You've found Foundation of Rome "overproducted", theres similar mechanics in "Warsaw rising up" game, with scoring for neighborhood while building the town, and wood + paper elements. Nice game, two modes: simple - just build the town, advanced - with workers and resources.

    Jon, or anyone else. Recently the Thunder Road kickstarter ended and I was interested in the Chrome addition with all of the expansions, but it's quite expensive. Is there enough in the base game where the expansions are just extra, or would the Chrome edition be worth it? Thanks!

    Now in SONG form! Lol jk, you already did that. GENIUS organization idea with the sliding scale of difficulty! I know because I did the same thing, just with worse names 😂. I 100% agree with Ticket to Ride, Codenames, Carcassonne, The Resistance and Pandemic! Also loved that you have Viral! Congratulations on being a new dad!
    I've noticed you have quite a few more party games than any other types... Do you prefer them over strategy games yourself, or are they just more convenient to please any guest?
    Loved the "Big Egos" and "Flat Shelf Society", I'm definitely stealing those 🤣

      To be honest, now that I've reorganised I have more party games than I realised. I think they're easy to keep because it's not too hard to imagine getting them played, and there's quite a range of styles. But I don't play party games as much as I used to so perhaps it's time to cull some!

    If we're considering puns on Agatha Christie for a shelf name, I'm slightly suspicious that nobody has put forward "And then there was Fun" as a play on one of her best (and most famous) novels.
    Or "Mousetraps" after her loooooong running West End play? "The Shelf pack'd from Side to Side" or "Cards on the Table" (from lesser known works)? Maybe "Games Afoot" if we want to slide over and make a Conan Doyle reference?

    • @actualol

    It shows you're very much of a social gamer. For me the opposite is the truth - playing with my wife, sometimes also with our daughter, but mostly just in 2-player setup. And if that's the case, silent thinkers is our favorite kind of games ;)

    9:36 The reason such games (Herd Mentality, Dixit) are not for me is that I usually play with the same group of people so when I'm asked the same question, I will now know what to answer to win. Also, if I play with my wife + a new person, I'll always have an advantage because I know what my wife will answer and the new person won't.

    • @actualol

    Best team party game for my money is a supply of cheap blank cards to make your own Monikers deck. The boxed game is fine but there’s something magical about having a deck full of in jokes for the people who happen to be there at the time.

    I love how you get upset about games not having boxes, logos, names of the same size :D Brilliant :) I am the same, like why if all the bg boxes are let's say squares 29.5cm and then you get BloodRage which is 30.5cm? WHY!? I have a perfect shelf that fits those 29.5 boxes and then can't keep Blood Rage there! I think boardgame designers should really come up with some ISO :)

    03:00 such a good point which is way too often overlooked and ignored. My wife is very concerned about the looks of the sides and hates it when every 4 sides of a box are ugly. there are 4 ways to design. at least make them different or chances are my wife puts the whole game away, never to be seen again :D
