Great job!!!! As a live sound technician, I know there is an even more budget way of doing this! I'll be using JBL Control 1 passive speakers, they're apparently downsized NS-10 made for broadcast monitoring and an insane value, coupled with a 4ohm 100 watts 6.1 distribution amplifier and a powered sub. I'll bypass the distribution amplifier input and connect the signal directly to each speaker, using d'Addario's D-sub splitter made for custom wiring. That way I'll be able to fan out one D sub out from my interface to the front (front stereo, front ceiling and center channel), then use their male to female D-sub to add another snake for the back and back ceiling pairs. Finally, I'll be using one of my line outputs for the sub, probably a 60 watts with a front port since I cannot spoof the neighbors. I'm new on TH-cam, but let me know if any of y'all would like to see the process!

It’s interesting getting into ATMOS. And it has been quite lucrative after full upgrades. I love seeing people helping to show people a cheap way to start learning and playing with ATMOS. Thanks to people like you the industry is exploding. It’s important to have low end options since the typical price of setting up an ATMOS studio in line with Dolby spec, begins at around $75K with typical gear, monitoring of the required full range speakers, correction, a Dolby Mastering computer, just to name a few. According to the latest stories and surveys you are right. About 50% of the major pro studios are in the process of moving to ATMOS. Similarly, according to the latest industry-wide Billboard industry survey, ATMOS and related studio installs are up 2,000% from just the prior year, Many of the smaller studios start at $25-50K. But they soon learn they need to add full range monitors, room correction, a separate mastering computer, MADI, Dante and a lot more. That’s why the current average of the surveys is closer to $100K. But, you definitely don’t need that to get started, just to be capable of getting certified and consistently getting the better paying projects. A bit of a barrier for most smaller studios where $20K is hard. But you are right on. Get into it comfortably, learn, play, get some small projects under your belt first. But please try to find a way to do real translation checks. Too many unchecked ATMOS mixes done in budget environments are giving ATMOS a bad name. Also, there is a lot of misinfo out there. Some of the larger ATMOS studios even play down the move. I hear some give bad advice like low-end monitors, or that you don’t ever need to spend more than maybe $20-30K. Keeps down their competition i’m sure. But like he said if you want to be competitive in a couple years you need to consider the move to ATMOS sooner rather than later. Within 9 months of becoming a Dolby certified studio, our revenues had increased by almost 45%. It took just under a year to fully amortize our $115K ATMOS upgrades. Much quicker than the ride up from stereo masters. But it didn’t happen until we upgraded and got certified in ATMOS.
The guy I referenced in the video is a good friend. His studio is certified, so I do have an option to reference check any project I do here. Everything else you mentioned is spot on. I created this video in hopes to push people to “go for it”. Here’s a low cost option to get started, learn and upgrade as you go. I’ve already made some modifications to my space since this video and the plan is to get to a point where I’m certified with Dolby. of course that’s going to take a while since, but I’m up for the challenge. Thanks for watching and I truly appreciate the feedback, and the info you dropped!

Hey, I am looking at getting into this myself and this is one of the only budget orientated videos there is that I have found. Please could you create a video on how you route/setup your focusrites into loopback etc. I have not found any info relating to this so far and its my biggest hurdle. Thanks so much!
Hey, Please make a video on audio interface how you connect all the 7.1.4 channel to focusrite 18i20, please explain it😢 I want to do this setup but I only managed speakers and struggling with Audio interface, which to choose from
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! I've been going back and forth on trying to create a setup like this but haven't seen enough relevant info for setting a system like this up at home (and on a budget!). Much appreciated.
Love your setup! I've done a similar thing with the JBL LSR series monitors. 8" for 5.1, then 6" for the two side surrounds, then 5" for the height speakers. Sourced them all off of KSL (a sort of Utah-based craigslist) for less than half of MSRP. Current challenge is figuring out how to get a bunch of long, reliable cable for cheap. I have my second focusrite coming in the mail in a few days - planning to link to the first through ADAT. Are you able to turn up and down your whole system on one knob? From what I can tell, with the Clarett 8PrePlus, the monitor knob only controls the physical outputs- not the ADAT, so I'll have to use the second Clarett to adjust the volume of the height speakers. I think. My other thought is should I set up my TV way too high all the way at the ceiling line (I'm a film composer), or should I set it up at a comfortable height but have my center channel be offset from the plane of the rest of the 7.1 Bed... So many unique decisions for every room and setup.
Great video !! Thank you. I have a very old pre-HDMI 7.1 preamp-processor and older generation klipsch speakers. Toslink / optical for audio. Looking at building a similar setup, was wondering how you calibrated everything post setup in regards to time delay and volume adjustments? Also a vid on audio routing from daw to atmos rendering to speakers would be super helpful.
time delay is bullshit for home cinemas. audiophiles have no clue what they are talking about 98% of the time. delays are only important for stage technicians if you have a really big venue. just look up how fast sound travels and then use some common sense.. dont watch youtube vids about sound delay. then you end up buying 1000€ cables after your done.. lol..

hey! Awesome video. I just wanted to ask if you have any issues with monitoring volume, as in being able to change the volume in all your speakers simultaneously
Tidal is only working with apple tv 4k or smart tv. Not available in pc setup (mac os, windows) so for dolby atmos through computer device , for now is only apple tv+ , apple music .
Finally! You explained exactly what i wanted to understand, the outputs, i currently have an Audient interface and luckily i can extend its outputs. Thank You! Loopback as a “controller” of sorts and I used Dolby Renderer to calibrate. They offer a free trial for 90 days. Plenty of time to get it dialed in a bit
You should open the Audio Midi setup in your utilities folder and on the right and choose your aggregate device then at the bottom you will see a button called configure speakers and now you can setup dolby atmos natively without loopback and saving the CPU overhead of Loopback and lowering latency.
That does not work. ATMOS does not run natively in MacOS for use with Apple Music and TV. The only way to get ATMOS content through those apps is to use Loopback.
@@MrPreeZee That is what I meant, when using atmos in Logic Pro, I guess I should have said that but you know how it is when you are typing, I can't type as fast as I would speak. But using Audio/Midi to setup Atmos will save a bit of CPU, my interface the Antelope Audio Galaxy 32 does have atmos support but I have used non-supported interfaces to set it up as well like the Motu 24AO. I'm glad to see more people are getting into Atmos audio since it really does make the music come alive in a way that surround formats like 5.1 just didn't do well. Cheers and thanks for showing your Atmos setup!!
I can't understand how u get Atmos effect with just adding outputs like Scarlett 18i20 when u need a compatible audio interface (MADI or Dante I/O) and audio decoder to send the audio signals to desired speakers for atmos effect?
Use an app called LoopBack for speaker routing. You can find sites that have instructions to set it up on Google. However I will make a video on it soon.

amazing ! but how did you calibrate your system ? did you used a calibration software or something else ? I'm also making my own Atmos studio using also a 18i20, but with Yamaha HS5.
Dude, this is exactly the kind of video I was looking for, for days! Great setup. Can you also watch movies in Dolby Atmos? Also is there an alternative to loopback app for Windows users as well?
Truly inspired! And it’s Black Friday sales galore…I’m planning on emulating your setup here. Looking at a Scarlett OctoPre and 18i20 since I only have a 2i2 currently, 4 KRK Classic 5’s for heights, KRK Classic 8’s for L-R-C, the 10.4 sub and then four Classic 7’s since they’re on sale for the surrounds. As a newbie, did you incorporate the subwoofer identical to a 2.1 setup with L & R passed through or connect the sub on its own individual channel directly into the 18i20? PS: Happy Thanksgiving and thank you for inspiring us!
Tip for a less cluttered center speaker signal you can add foams on the back of your monitors to tame the reflections of the monitors. Just a tip, do whatever you want with it.
Hi Mr. PreeZee I'm sending you this message because I'd like to know how you set up your Dolby Atmos home studio. Cabling, audio calibration of the speakers. I'm doing my own Atmos studio, I'm also using an 18i20 but for the speakers I'm using Yamaha HS5 and I would like to switch to 5.1.4. If you can advise me I will be really happy Thanks a lot!
This was just the video I needed especially since Apple is jumping on the Atmos train when it comes to music production. I was getting a bit worried with staying relevant in the music scene since this transition was announced on top of not having the $45,000 plus available to invest into such a rig. I was wondering if a "budget" option would be enough to enter the Atmos game, or at the very least get my feet wet and learn without breaking the bank and from the sounds of it, it can be done. Thank you again brother, I'll be following your channel for sure.

I believed almost everything you said unitl you said that the KRKs have "clarity, detail and punch" but that's a convo for another day :D Cool idea using the stands - does the angle of the height channels not affect the atmos height effect?
Thanks for watching. May I ask what monitors you use? As far as the height channels, because my room is so small, they are at the best position and angle for the listening “sweet spot”
We have almost the same setup (budget atmos) my suggestion is make it L C R in the same height..tweeter in line with your ear..and the rest of the surround speaker…

@@MrPreeZee I did not know that you can combine the 2 ... right now I am very green in information but I am already studying and working in binaural dolby and I have to find a formulation similar to yours that is economical and efficient, thank you very much for answering m8.
It’s great if you want to mix your own music or listen to your favorite movies but as a professional service to clients this won’t cut it. Monitoring is expensive in DA. Good video all the same and the speakers are great. Height speakers was ingenious.
That's a great, inexpensive setup. I think surround sound makes a huge difference and I enjoy listening to well produced music in surround sound. One step up from this some may be interested in might be Kali since their IN series can be used as a center channel and they have some basic placement correction DSP built in. The IN-5c in particular might be easier to mount since it has a bracket on the back that can mount with a ton of standardized VESA mounts. A step up from that... Would be the Genelec system you mention. I'm currently building a Genelec system out with all coaxial monitors. Will eventually cost me $22k for the speakers and a sub for a 6.1.2 system, not to mention another 4-5k for a digital surround sound processor once I get rid of this Dolby DP564 decoder. It has been my dream since my early teens to have surround sound music after hearing binaural recordings and I can finally do so with speakers. Now I just hope Dolby improves to render spatial audio on headphones that sounds closer to binaural. Not a fan of the AirPods Pro with spatial audio.

Can you tell us where you got the stands? What model they are?
Got the lower stands from guitar center. And the taller c-stands from Amazon.
Can run for film / netflix playback?
how do you do the mastering volumen managment? thanks
So far all mixing and mastering is done in Logic Pro X. That’s what works for me at the moment.
@@MrPreeZee ok thanks
You should open the Audio Midi setup in your utilities folder and on the right and choose your aggregate device then at the bottom you will see a button called configure speakers and now you can setup dolby atmos natively without loopback and saving the CPU overhead of Loopback and lowering latency.
That does not work. ATMOS does not run natively in MacOS for use with Apple Music and TV. The only way to get ATMOS content through those apps is to use Loopback.
But if you’re only using Logic Pro, then yes configuration through AudioMidi is the way to go
@@MrPreeZee That is what I meant, when using atmos in Logic Pro, I guess I should have said that but you know how it is when you are typing, I can't type as fast as I would speak.
@@MrPreeZee thanks for the prompt reply .... I still have few more questions
great video! i come from the post production audio world and am trying to setup atmos in my home studio on a tight budget. there are so few down to earth resources out there on how to do this. ps love the lakers picture
Please how were you able to connect both audio interfaces. Please I need help
If you’re using a Mac, create an aggregate device with both interfaces
@@MrPreeZee thank you so much. Is it possible on windows?
I don’t own a pc, so I can’t say for sure
Do you need delays for your overheads?
Not in my space since it’s such a small room
How do you control volume across all monitors at once, since you’re using two separate interfaces?
Using the Loopback app, you’re able to control volume via the system volume controls.
@@MrPreeZee ty!
How do you get your Scarlet outputs to the speakers ?
I’m building a system and cant figure it out
If you’re asking about software. I use Audio Hijack for the speaker routing
@@MrPreeZee no I mean physically getting the signal from your scarlet to the speakers
I’m using resolve and want to monitor discrete 5.1 channels
Computer >Scarlett> then what?
Fantastic Video!!!! This has inspired me big time to do the same thing! If I understand correctly, I have a Presonus 1824c that has 8 line in outputs. Soooo if I get another interface that has ADAT connection I can just link them together to get my extra outputs for speakers???? If you could please steer me in the right direction Im all over this!!! Thanks for the video!!!!
Hey Mr. Preezee, soon I'll be open dolby atmos studio but i don't know what audio interface i needed which is compatible with dolby atmos. could you please help me
On the high end look into Apogee or Avid. On the slightly lower end Focusrite
Amazing. I’m inspired. I’ve used KRKs for more than 20 years so I know them well. Now, if I can get one of my kids to move out…..
😂😂😂😂
Did you connect sub as a separate output or is using pass through crossover from left and right
Separate channel.
How about telling us where you bought the stands, what model, and how much they cost.
C-Stand,Neewer, Amazon, around $200 for the pair.
Other stands, guitar center
Thank you@@MrPreeZee
Great set up! Could you explain how you are time aligning your height and surround speakers? Are you doing it within Logic?
I use Audio Hijack by Rogue Amoeba
Hi can you watch movies in atmos with your computer? if so what app are you using?
My movies I bought through Apple play in Atmos. I haven’t tested browser apps like Netflix yet. I will, and I’ll keep you posted
@@MrPreeZee fantastic
What audio interface should I use?
I need an answer
If needs must then you do what you can to make it work with your budget. Good job.
id suggest getting the iloud speakers which you can mount directoy on mic stands for the hight speakers. They are non essential in terms of voicing...
I literally mentioned those in the video
Bro so sick. Curios what Dolby wants to certify my Dolby atmos studio space at home. Using rocket 5 budget speakers
Good stuff, I'm setting up mine as we speak. I have KRK 5 for the surround and iloud mini for the heights and Mackie for the bass. I'm now making adjustments in DARDT to finalize placement to try to get sufficient headroom. Have you completed the whole onboarding process?
Nice looking studio, my man!
How is your two audio interfaces configured?
As an aggregate device in Mac OS
@@MrPreeZee I am on pc, so will look into 18i20 and Clarett plus an Anubis for monitor control. Ravenna compatible.
amazing ! but how did you calibrate your system ? did you used a calibration software or something else ? I'm also making my own Atmos studio using also a 18i20, but with Yamaha HS5.
I’m doing a similar thing with m-audio monitors. They’re inexpensive & sound decent. I need more space to mount them towards the back though. God job.
NICE!! Good luck
It dont matter what it looks like, but if it does or don't work, you say it works for you and thats all that matters.
Great job! How does the listening experience compare to the other studio?
It not exact but it’s pretty close. He has a larger space so having the monitors spread out is really the only difference.
Hey what desk is that?
Found this desk on Amazon for about $500
Dude, this is exactly the kind of video I was looking for, for days! Great setup. Can you also watch movies in Dolby Atmos? Also is there an alternative to loopback app for Windows users as well?
I don’t know of a Windows alternative. I have have Mac systems in my studio.
Sub is on its own channel.
And good luck with the setup! I’m glad the video helped!!
Is there a way to replicate this in windows pc
I’m not sure. I don’t have a pc to research that. Sorry
Thank you for this informative video.
Tip for a less cluttered center speaker signal you can add foams on the back of your monitors to tame the reflections of the monitors.
Just a tip, do whatever you want with it.
👍🏽
Ok i need to learn this Loopback trick
Hi Mr. PreeZee
I'm sending you this message because I'd like to know how you set up your Dolby Atmos home studio. Cabling, audio calibration of the speakers.
I'm doing my own Atmos studio, I'm also using an 18i20 but for the speakers I'm using Yamaha HS5 and I would like to switch to 5.1.4.
If you can advise me I will be really happy
Thanks a lot!
I used the Dolby Renderer app to calibrate. But ultimately I do everything through Logic Products
@@MrPreeZee I'm doing the same, so you doesn't use bass management and all that kind of stuff?
This was just the video I needed especially since Apple is jumping on the Atmos train when it comes to music production. I was getting a bit worried with staying relevant in the music scene since this transition was announced on top of not having the $45,000 plus available to invest into such a rig. I was wondering if a "budget" option would be enough to enter the Atmos game, or at the very least get my feet wet and learn without breaking the bank and from the sounds of it, it can be done. Thank you again brother, I'll be following your channel for sure.
I had that same feeling before I set this up. I’m glad this video helped.
Great job. Thanks for that .
wonderful sir.... plz do a video.... on precisely how to did the aggregate outputs and other logic settings tq soo much❤❤
homie thanks for that video, really informative. Now i'd just like to know, any way i can get this to work on windows without an expensive receiver or do i absolutely need a mac?
Unfortunately I don’t have a windows pc here to test that with! Sorry.
Thanks for watching!
@@MrPreeZee My pleasure! I did some research and on windows, i would need the dolby media encoder app which costs over 400$! Man the things you get on MacOS eh?
Great news! Fiedler audio just dropped Dolby Atmos Composer plugin and it works with any DAW and also on Windows
@@o.g.willing will it allow me to playback dolby atmos content through an audio interface with enough outputs like loopback does? I don't want to buy an expensive receiver
@@nisuk5144 dolby atmos composer certainly not, becasue that is a plugin to be used in a daw. However if you get somewhere the Dolby Atmos file in a standard format of ADM BWF (the file an artist would upload to Tidal, Apple Music etc.) then you can upload that file to Dolby Atmos Composer and play the Dolby Atmos music that way
Great job on the setup.
I want my Buster Keaton collection in the Dolby Atmos.
Nice!
Awesome,THANX
Wow i thought your video had thousands of views, love your editing
Thanks! Hopefully it will get thousands of views!!🙏🏽🙏🏽
awesome work brother.
Thank you!
We have almost the same setup (budget atmos) my suggestion is make it L C R in the same height..tweeter in line with your ear..and the rest of the surround speaker…
Already done! The only channel that was a different height was the Center. Got the stand for it a few days after posting this vid. Covering all that in my part 2 vid. Thanks for watching!
@@MrPreeZee yes…sacrifice the screen and put in lill bit angled and lower to make center speaker in line with left and right also could help to make it all in same line
What was your budget?? How much did you spend?
I think I’m total, maybe about $2500-3000
@@MrPreeZee ! Thanks!
Very helpful
Friend I have found the solution to directly expand the focusrite 18i20 and is the Focusrite Octopre, so you get 8 extra ADAT outputs.
You could also just use another 18i20 for ADAT I/o. Which would be a little cheaper
@@MrPreeZee I did not know that you can combine the 2 ... right now I am very green in information but I am already studying and working in binaural dolby and I have to find a formulation similar to yours that is economical and efficient, thank you very much for answering m8.
Exactly what I have imagined and was looking for, without drilling holes on my ceiling /wall 🧱.
It’s great if you want to mix your own music or listen to your favorite movies but as a professional service to clients this won’t cut it. Monitoring is expensive in DA. Good video all the same and the speakers are great. Height speakers was ingenious.
Hi, do you use Windows or Mac?
Mac
Thank you.
🙏🏽🙏🏽
Good job 😏 Here comes your ego boost
