    I have owned the Sony STR-DH790 for over a year. Best feature I love is being able to play my music via Bluetooth. So far, I have a 3.2 Surround setup. 2 Sony SS-F7000, 4 way tower speakers for left and right. 1 Sony SSCS8 for center Channel, 1 Klipsch R-10SW sub and I just picked up a Klipsch R-12SW at Costco for less than $180. I haven’t added any rear or ceiling speakers yet. Very happy with my setup!

    Just found this receiver at my local goodwill for $98.00! Grabbed it immediately, seemed odd to have something so new there but all ports work with no issue, just no remote or calibration mic. I programed my harmony remote for the receiver and it is working well. Will integrate atmos speakers soon, but just wanted to say how nice this receiver is. Sound is very clear.

      I own two of these recievers and I strongly suggest you contact the manufacturer to get a replacement remote for this model for calibration. I don't use the mic but the very basic on screen menu is complimented strongly by the display menu of the reciever itself and navigating is much easier with remote. Make sure you enable the hdmi as your input to enable full bandwidth to your channels or you won't be getting the real sound this unit can produce. Good luck

    I got this exact set up per your recommendation. One of the satellites acquired a buzzing sound after a week when it hit a certain frequency. Wrote to Klipsch and they said "the Sony STR-DH790 outputs 145W per channel at 6 ohms, which translates to roughly 108W per channel when driving an 8 ohm speaker. The satellites in the Reference Theater Pack are only rated at 50W continuous, so they are being overdriven by a significant amount. We generally recommend staying within + or - 20% of the rated power handling, so a max of 60W on these in particular." Thankfully they are sending me another satellite for free but they also told me not to crank my sound too loud which I don't anyway but would be nice to know in future. Buyer beware.

    Dude so glad a saw this video I was hesitant on pulling the plug on the $899 deal, had it in my cart several times and never got around to complete the transaction.
    Then saw them for $799 and decided to to buy them and match them with my Sony STR DH790 I bought 3 months prior.
    So I replaced my 6.1 Bose Accustimass with these Klipsch and boy I’m glad I did.
    These are amazing and go perfect with the Klipsch R-12 Subwoofer, that I got on sale for $149 at Costo as well.
    Loved it so much I ordered a 2nd subwoofer, cause today was the last day the are on sale.
    Glad I listened to you.

    I now Have phenomenal sound thanks to you, I pretty much got every bit of discount that you talked about in the video, with speaker wires + tools everything included this cost me a little over $750 over the holidays, I have to say for the space I have, speakers completely fill the space up with sound, and it's so loud and powerful that I often wonder why my neighbors aren't complaining.
    A few things buyers should be aware of is that the sony str-dh790 can't be controlled via an app or anything, in fact it can't be connected to the internet for software updates etc, and a lot of configuration is buried deep inside the AMP menu on the receiver so it's a bit difficult to get to and configure properly, in hindsight I would have gone with a DN1080, which pretty much covers the gap, but I have figured out and learned a lot about this stuff that I don't need that upgrade anymore.
    Also, the Journey to Atmos Audio is not easy, it takes some time to understand what's going on. So be patient and stick to it.

    I've been slowly piecing together a true Dolby Atmos system to replace the soundbar I've been using. I got a set of Onkyo speakers from a thrift store that was intended to be a starter as one speaker was missing from the set. Last week though I came across the Klipsch Reference Theater pack from this video at a local place called Trade-It still factory sealed in the box for $200 and decided to go with these instead. Now I need to buckle down and find the bookshelf speakers for my front left and right channel and finally find a receiver (between Covid and bills getting a decent receiver has alluded me thus far).

      @ealanosborne  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oof. Yeah, budget AVRs are hard to come by right now, with no light at the end of the tunnel that I can see. If you have a Costco membership (or a friend who does), they keep getting stocked with budget receivers for a short period of time, then they’re gone. Then they get them back in stock again, etc. Currently (just checked their website), the Yamaha TSR 700 is back again for only $439. 🤷‍♂️
      Good for you, doing all that bargain hunting, though! 🤘 Keep at it!

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. If that’s your style, go for it. Speakers are speakers. They just need a positive and negative signal to move. Nothing fancy about that. So used ones will most likely still be good, unless the previous owners blew them out. 👍

    The issue is the Sony reciever which doesnt have enough amplification for the klipsch set. With only 90 watts per channel into 6 ohms (20-20,000 Hz) at 0.09% THD, with 2 channels driven is not enought. Klipsch standing speaker requires 8 ohms. you'll need a 4 channel amp with RCA's and a 100w per channel reciever with pre outs.

    Great video and very informative. Is the Klipsch Reference Theater Pack 5.1 that you mention Dolby Atmos compatible? I don't see it referenced anywhere on the specs or manual. Another set of more expensive Klipsch speakers does mention Dolby Atmos. Am I missing something or does it even matter? Thanks!

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! It doesn't really matter which speakers you use, it matters how many. You need at least 7 speakers for a Dolby Atmos system. The Reference theater pack comes with 5 speakers and a sub, so that's not considered a Dolby Atmos-ready setup, numbers-wise. That's why in this video I suggest getting the R-41M bookshelf speakers ALSO, since that will give you a total of 7 speakers, which you can then use in a Dolby Atmos speaker configuration, as long as you get an AV receiver that can decode Dolby Atmos.

    Klipsch really nailed the budget market. But I would definitely hit up the used market for this price point. Get that 3500 dollar bundle used for 1k. The word reference is getting thrown around lightly. Klipschs real reference line is like 10k a pair of speakers as are most brands.

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, thanks for the compliments! And yeah...getting that balance is an art form, since room space, furniture and ceilings are all different for everyone. For starters, make sure that sub is set to 120 Hz crossover, so makes up for what the little Theater Pack speakers can’t do. I’m not positive, since I don’t own the s750h, but I’m pretty sure you can also set the crossover frequencies for each individual speaker. So even though the r-41m’s frequency response can go lower than 110Hz, set the crossover to 120Hz so they match what the Theater Pack satellites can output.
      And also, it’ll take a couple weeks to “break in” the speakers in any given space. I wasn’t all too impressed either when first hooked up. Then down the road, it just dawned on me, “Hey...these sound better.” 😄 In the end, these are still budget speakers. So they’re not the best of the best. But I still think they’re the best for the price, compared to other systems in its class. 👍

    Good option for people who just want an option out of the box (mostly) but it’s also a great idea to start with better speakers in what you can afford (2, 2.1, 3.1, 5.1, whatever), and a high quality receiver. Then over time add more speakers that match your original set. For a little bit over $1000 you can upgrade every component in this with something like the Jamas Cinema system and a good receiver, then adding more speakers that you add as atmos speakers. They even have upward firing for folks who don’t want big speakers dangling around.
    Not as sleek or cheap as this, but over time you can punch well above your money in HT audio. Just gotta be okay with your speakers being a visual statement in the space because while they aren’t towers, they ain’t small either lol.

      True! Although one thing to remember, the longer you need to make your speaker wire runs, the thicker (lower) the gauge needs to be. Since I run my wires through my attic, some runs are 50+ feet, so I used 14 gauge, since it’s the thickest the Theater Pack speakers can handle. If your speaker runs only need anything up to 50 feet? 16 gauge should be fine. 👍

    At what position to you personally recommend mounting the height channels, if using the Klipsch satellite speakers? Should I put them up front near/on the ceiling or should I move them back, overhead and a few feet in front of the couch position? It would seem to me that if you put them up by the TV on the ceiling the Atmos effect would be less pronounced than if it were closer to the listener and more above their head. Both positions are possible for me, but I am undecided which would be best.

    • @ealanosborne

      Great question! Well, mounting them above the TV near the ceiling gives you the “Wall of Sound,” which does this really cool effect that makes your TV seem gigantic.

      Great! Thanks for the reply! I am actually using a projector screen instead of a TV and the screen hangs from the ceiling about 2.5 feet from the wall (there's a basement window on the wall). If I were to put the height speakers in the upper corner this would be behind the screen. I do not have an acoustically transparent screen so it may slightly reflect the sound back onto the wall. Unfortunately my front L/R channels will be slightly behind the screen on bookshelves. While the speakers are physically positioned slightly to the right and left of the screen back there, they are pointed at the couch directly in front of the screen so there may also be a slight sound deflection. I'll have to see how it goes. Do you think if I mounted the height channels back there it would be an issue? I'm digging that Wall of Sound concept! The center channel will be under the screen so that's no issue. I just ordered my gear and it's on the way. I just have a soundbar for the time being so I'm pretty excited about the upgrade!

      But yes, it would cause some issues if the height channels were behind a non-acoustically transparent projector screen, given that most of what comes out of the height channels are mid to high frequencies, which are very directional, meaning they need to be pointed right at the listening position to be heard the best.

      That system is excellent for what it provides. But the thing about systems like that, is that there isn’t much room for expansion. If you’re wanting to dive into home theater now with the intent of getting better equipment and better speakers down the road, I would invest in a receiver and wired speakers up front. Otherwise, if you get the Platin system and are completely satisfied, then that’s great too! Whatever floats your boat. 😀

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure! Every living room/home theater space is different, so however you can pull it off is fine. As long as those height speakers are pointed in your general direction, you’re good, whether they’re above the TV, straight above your head or to the sides up high. 👍

    How is your center speaker holding up against R-41M?
    I'm thinking about doing the exact same thing but I've heard that the home theater system set was lacking in mid range. I was wondering if adding the R-41M helped or it overpowered the center speaker now. Also, my setup is for a small living room. Thanks for your help in advance!

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually don’t personally have this setup. I was merely giving an example of how to make a complete Dolby Atmos setup from scratch.
      BUT...it is a great question. Since the R-41M speakers’ frequency response goes down to 68Hz, it can reproduce much better in the midrange. But the Sony receiver does allow you to set the crossover frequency for each speaker. So even tho the R-41M can handle down to 68Hz, if you’re concerned about them overpowering the center speaker, set the crossover frequency to 110 Hz, to give all the speakers a more balanced output. The subwoofer can then handle all the frequencies below 110Hz. 👍 Just an idea. Or just experiment with which crossover frequency makes the system sound the best. Your home theater should sound however you like it best. 🙌

    Have you heard of or experienced the dn-1080 issue where the speakers pop/snap when pausing Atmos or DD+ content? It basically sounds like the snap when you touch a doorknob while statically charged, only amplified through your right channel speakers. I have this exact setup, Klipsch TRP and have tried two separate Dn-1080 units and BOTH have this issue. Google shows that I am not the only person that has experienced this and Sony pretends they don't know what's going on. Typically if you take it to the top level of customer service they just buy the unit back, there is no fix. The problem is that I love the way this unit sounds! I tried a Denon X1600h I between my two Sony units and it didn't compare. I am considering downgrading to the dn-790 and hoping it sounds as good. What do you recommend? The other problem is that no retailers have AvRs in stock right now, thanks covid. Help!

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that Sony STR-DH790 is basically the same as the DN1080, but just less bells and whistles. But sound quality basically the same. 90W of power per channel rather than 100W with the DN1080, so not much difference. That's why I usually recommend it, since it seems to be the most bang for your buck.
      Oh, and no, I haven’t heard of this issue with the DN1080, so thanks for the heads up!

I wanted to buy a YAMAHA tsr-700 receiver but its output is 100w per channel, I have read on the internet that it is better that the receiver has more power than the speakers, but the center R-52C needs 100w, it is not bad that the receiver only has 100w or there will be no problem?

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’ll be just fine, actually. It’s rated to be 100 watts when 2 channels are driven at once. But in a home theater setting, with all 7 channels playing simultaneously, it’s more like 60 watts per channel? That TSR-700 will work great with those speakers. 👍
      The 100w rating just means it can handle 100w continuously, which is nice, since that means it won’t come close to blowing out those speakers, especially since the R-52c can handle a spike of up to 400w and still be okay.
      Lastly, it’s good to know that the R-52c can be used with any upgrades you make in the future, like maybe if you want to power your front 3 speakers with an external amp. That R-52c will still be able to handle that power, too.
