- Building a Dobly Atmos Studio on a budget? Here are some audio interface and studio monitor options for the immersive mixing format. I chose the Audient Oria after doing some research.

Thanks for doing this! I was just considering different models for surrounds to save money, and this reinforces that approach.
Thank you for your vidéos , happy new year. Look forward for a tutoriel about pro tools session setup for mixing films in atmos.
Best
Louis
Thanks for this video, i have been eyeing out the Audient for a while, but had no one to ask how it was , it seems perfect for a small post studio
Yeah it fits my needs perfectly
Thanks a lot Bro….Have just completed my Atmos setup using the 18i20 and the Aphex ….im going in for the ORIA ❤ok👍
Good luck
Thank you so much Thomas! Your videos are always so informative and detailed, I was surprised to see I have a similar speaker selection to you. Where you use the LSR305s for surrounds, I am actually using the MKII for my lcr and then the same eris 3.5 for my surrounds. Currently running the MOTU Ultralight MK5 for my 5.1 build. It is serving me well so far. Thank you for these recommendations and introductions to atmos!
This fundamental information is great. Funny I jumped into this brands ecosystem, with the 8 and 16 with the plan to get the Orio.
I don't mind taking a risk on a new company
I got the Oria Card and its card for my atmos set up
Another serious competitor for working on a tight budget is the Audient EVO16 + EVO SP8 as an ADAT DAC extender, making a basic 16x16 interface.
I was looking at the ORIA, but in my case calibration and speaker management is already handled by Genelec's GLM software and Nuendo anyway.
Yes, no need to replace stuff that already works well
@@alecmackay89 wouldn’t you then have to get something like Ginger audio ground control so you are able to have an Atmos controller, I considered the Evo combo , but you have to be able to group your outputs to control your speakers as one volume knob then
@@alecmackay89 wait never mind I just saw you had speaker management lol my bad
Thanks for the video! By any chance do you have any suggestions on ways to mount the ceiling speakers? My apartment's ceiling is at a slight incline (shorter on the front and taller on the back). Therefore, if I just got standard ceiling mounts, they'd be uneven (back 2 would be higher than the front 2). Would probably need something adjustable to compensate for that on the back 2 ceiling speakers.
You may have to fabricate something to work for the height channels. You could make a bracket out of wood or metal. Or just live with the difference and use delay to compensate for it
@ThomasBoykin Your suggestion of some DIY wood/metal construction might be it 😅. I'll see if I can work something out with my landlord. At this point, just grateful to still have my Pasadena apartment after the fires. Thanks for all you do!
Do you find that the rears/heights don't need the low frequency info to justify a larger speaker? I know several Atmos capable studios (even some really high-end rooms) are running Kali IN-8 and IN-5 speakers. I've heard the Village studio F and it's fantastic even with those relatively cheap speakers. I'd be concerned about 3.5" drivers but I'm newish to immersive mixing.
Hey actually they are 4.5, I goofed! But yeah, they don't need much below 80hz up there. The ones I got seem like they start to subtly roll of around 100hz or so, but still thump a little bit. Good enough for my needs.
any insight about motu ultralite
mk5?
Motu makes great interfaces
Hi Tom qq. For the height speakers as they are daddy/child in terms of cabling, don’t you need a dedicated TRS from the audient to each speaker or do you run both cables for height from the audient to the daddy, and then the speaker wire to the baby carries the dedicated output for that channel? Hope I’m making sense lol. HNY sir!
Good question. I still had to run two cables from the Oria to the daddy speaker.
@@ThomasBoykin got it. Makes sense. I was going to do the same thing a year ago when I built my 5.1 setup and use Aris speakers for my Ls & Rs but thought it wouldn’t work because each needed a dedicated input from the interface. I gave up on those before really investigating and got the iloud MTM’s (MUCH more expensive, but for 5.1 probably better as they match the LCR) but for future atmos now I know I can use the Aris or even the ILoud micro minis as they also work in the daddy/child setup like the Presonis ones do. Fantastic!
FYI the MOTU 16A has been discontinued for quite some time. (Not sure why they still list it on their website.)
Good to know, thanks!
Hi Tom, Thanks for your videos. I have a question, what audio interface would you prefer to use for a 5.1 home studio between the Focusrite 18i20 and the Audient Evo 16? Thanks a lot!
Either would work but my vote would be Audient.
@ thanks a lot ✌🏻
any video recommendations for calibrating a 5.1 system that is using the 18i20?

@ thank you!!
Hi Tom, is the sync with picture tight enough with just word clock? Or are you using USB only to connect and sync the Oria and video interface to the Mac?
Hey Kevin, the sync is pretty tight and I’m not using anything for word clock. I’m using a Blackmagic video peripheral
@@ThomasBoykin I'm using a Blackmagic IO as well. The Oria may be just what I'm looking for so I don't need to get a Matrix. Thanks!
I have a Focusrite Clarett 8preX would this be good for atmos?
I don’t think there’s enough outputs
@ Okay, thank you
@@ThomasBoykin what software do you use for mixing in 5.1 and how do you map the outputs?
Just revamped my PT rig. Had an icon d-command for yrs went with avid dock and S1, CB Electronics TMC-1 monitor controller so I can still use xmon, and hdx IO. The TMC-1 has Atmos monitoring. I think I can upgrade w/o new interface? Not planning on making the jump this year.
Man kann unter MacOS auch zwei billige Soundkarten zusammenführen und hat dann 16 Kanäle für fast Null Geld
Yes, I considered that too. But I wanted something with built in monitor control
