Sauce and gravy channel?…. My life is now complete, lol. It’s all about the sauce and gravy
My Dad used to make this for us. It was so good. He called it SOS. I think the ‘real’ SOS may be made with chipped beef but hamburger is better. He always added a little garlic, he was Italian and a WWII vet. We ate it on toast.
This was a staple Mom made for us growing up. Usually on mashed potatoes, (boiled potatoes mashed on your plate with your fork) or bread.
I never had it growing up.My Dad was an older Dad and Mom wouldn't have liked the SOS term.At least we had the frozen boxes of Stouffers in the freezer which I do have.I was in heaven when I was able to eat chippbeef each Sunday morning in my college Cafeteria.
My dad got the recipe from his mess sergeant. The original fed a few hundred. We were five. Wish he never cut it down. Good for Sunday breakfast.
Good stuff. I ate a lot of it in the Army. 1960s
@@MichaelTheophilus906 I still like it on occasion
My Military father used to make this over toast for me & my sister back in the Stone Age… pure comfort food😊
We had something similar when I was in the Marine Corps. They used chipped beef ?? At least that's what they told us 😂
Gravy should have it's own food group .
I agree!
Oh yes, gravy is my fave of everything
I think it was 1997, the diner we went to had this for a special. I ate this every morning for 2 months. Put this over 2 slices of thick cut homemade bread for $1.50 and who could resist.
With mashed potatoes and green beans. Love it!
Yes omg
❤❤❤❤❤❤!!!😊
And garlic bread
Best served over hot biscuits.
That's very good too I toast them well first and swipe garlic butter on. I like the worcester sauce in with garlic salt in too and plenty of black pepper
Also, just some canned milk along with whole milk
I agree with what you said, 'Grocery prices are going through the roof these days, so you can't beat an inexpensive meal like this.'
Hamburger is not inexpensive.
I am a 74 year old retired Talent Management Consultant and Author who has recently discovered how much I love to cook. I am especially fond of dishes made with gravies and/or sauce.
So, when your cooking channel popped up this morning showcasing Hamburger Gravy, I absolutely loved it.
I was quite impressed with the way you explained everything in a step-by-step, easy to understand manner!
Wow! Thank you so much 😊
I often use cream of mushroom soup and lately I have been making my own cream of mushroom soup!
I ate this for breakfast over toast at the mess hall when I was in the army, with an over easy egg on top
This was a family staple...my parents had 11 kids ..then my dad broke his back ..so not much money for food .so gravy over potatoes or rice with corn or green beans..or carrots .or a mix of all three
Wow, you got eggs, too? I never did.
My mom used to make this and simply put it over two white untoasted slices of Wonder bread when I was growing up… whenever she asked me what I wanted for dinner, as a five year old, this was always in the top five.! Heavenly simplicity.
We never ate Wonder Bread. It's similar to angel food cake.
I'm so glad I found this. My mom used to make it with rice. When she passed my older now she passed tossed all of Mom's recipes. I'm still missing a few. But this was one of her favorites
Sorry to hear that. So many family favorites are lost that way.
omg!!!! how cud ur sis do that!!!!! those r priceless!!!!! 😢
My Dad did that to us. He had no idea that those magazine and newspaper clips were a cultural treasure. I learned how to make close copies from searching the Web. I'm making copies and sending to family.
Been making this for years… SOS is what we call it. Tasty
That is what we called dried beef and gravy over toast.
You sound like the Bob Ross of cooking! 🎨 👨🍳
Lol love Bob Ross to bad he is gone
I was waiting to hear, there’s only happy mistakes.
Zzzzzzzzz!
C'mon Sarg, put that SOS on some toast!
Biscuits...
HOOAH and Rock Steady. I eaten several metric tons of it. 😊😊😊
My mom was not allowed to make SOS 🤣
Yes, but all we have is this big pile of fried potatoes. It was my Dad's favorite when I lived at home.
Yes he does!
My mom made it often when I was a kid, I still love it today.
Same here
We've been making this for years, only no dairy, just broth and a bit of Gravy Master. We serve over mashed potatoes. It's like a lazy shepherds pie.
Thanks for the reminder. I think I will make a shepherd's pie.
SOS...Army mess hall. Loved that stuff!
Comfort food all the way, my mom used to make this and served it on noodles.
Great idea!
When I was in the Army, 1965 to 1968 this was they kind of SoS we had. No Chipped Beef. I think Chipped Beef was more expensive so the Army used Hamburger - Loved it and still do!
This was gourmet eating when I was a kid. My mom used to make it and I still do. Makes a really good biscuits and gravy and alone with mashed potatoes it is one of my favorite comfort foods. My daughter and I call it “ Grandma’s gravy”
Breakfast of the US ARMY 🇺🇸
Not any more since we are all charged by the flush these days
USAF too.
Hooooooaahhhhhh 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸🤍🇺🇸💙
Just like it was in the Army, SOS. 😋😋😋👍👍👍
My grandma made hamburger gravy. Loved it. And my mom made it also. I’ve tried it but I wasn’t very good at it. I’m not much of a cook. But I love hamburger gravy. We always served it over toast.
I make it sometimes. I love it. My Mom would make hamburger gravy as a meal and we would put it over bread. Nothing else just the gravy for the meal.
Mom always used evaporated milk instead of cream but either is good, I like thyme for an herb component.
Great tips! 👍
I had this back in the 60's over boiled potatoes. I loved it.
Damn you went all that time without?
My mom would make this for her and my dad. Us children didn’t have to eat it. She told us she would make this when they were first married, 1947, for about a year because it was so cheap. They had it for lunch and dinner over mashed potatoes. None of us children ever developed a taste for it. She called it scritch scratch gravy
My Mom used to make this all the time using our home grown beef. If you use a bit higher fat content you don’t need to add butter or oil. My Mom only used salt and pepper. Really good with home made biscuits. We just called it scrambled hamburger.
Looks good. I add another level of flavor by dicing up 4-5 mushrooms when finishing up the burger. I even like this over biscuits, toast, but especially potatoes with a couple of eggs over the top. If you want to add some color, add a couple of diced green onions and some colored peppers. Thanks.
Delicious 👌
I am actually very grateful for your channel. A great friend to all Sauciers indeed.
Thank you so much 😊
I like chopped bell pepper in mine too. Yummy !
Had this when I served in Uncle Sam's canoe club! USN. I was a tin can sailor and we had this at sea at mid rats (midnight rations). Gods but I used to love this! I still make it at home.
We had this in our high school cafeteria for lunch, it was always a favorite.
reminds me of creamed chip beef on toast
Chef, made this for dinner this evening! Oh Man!!!!!
Grass fed beef, tossed in a finely chopped carrot and celery, corse chopped sweet Vidalia onion. What's it sauce, soy sauce, beef soup base w/water, heavy cream. Served over Garlic Sourdough toast.... oh man!❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the recipe chef!
Awesome 👍 sounds super delicious 😋

Me too I had this in the 60s going to middle school and this is what they serve for lunch over mashed potatoes thanks for showing this this is been a great memory throwback 😊
One of my favorite comfort foods. Started making this in the Navy for me and my shipmates w/ leftovers for our midrats, late night snack.
When I was in the Navy ret. Loved the red SOS to. It was a great breakfast...
What a surprise for me, forgot about hamburger gravy mom would make it and we would have refried beans with homemade tortillas "Delicious" and economical thank you for bringing it back , so many memories brought tears to my eyes happy tears I might add.
Just checked the channel:
404 videos of
sauces and gravies. Heaven!
I use to fix this all the time and eat on toast. If you can find the thick Texas toast it is great. I never put onions in it. Also I can’t say it not as good as sausage gravy I like both. My husband was a marine he introduced me to this. I never added soy to my recipe I would have to taste first. Looks wonderful.
The first time I had this was when I was a cadet at Marine Military Academy, which is also where I learned it's nickname which, abbreviated, is "SoS." I understood the second-S because a slice of bread can visually represent a roofing shingle, but the dish NEVER deserved its first-S because it was delicious! I even made it after I graduated and came home to go to college, and then later when I was a sole-custody single parent needing to feed a hungry kid. And now it's going on the menu for next week. Thanks for reminding me!
I was just going to say this, my dad was Air Force and taught my mom had to make it, it was a pretty well liked staple in our home growing up and Air Force bases... my love now also...
@@holleygrise4667 I know, right? It's not just a nostalgia thing; it really does taste delicious when prepared correctly.
People love sausage gravy. Well, take that sausage gravy recipe, substitute ground beef for the sausage, adjust the spices, and make it thicker, and you have what I understand they sometimes call "chipped beef" but we'll (unfortunately) always know as "SoS."
US Army: same here.
@@charlesmangum2100 My memory is giving me fits. Was "Chipped Beef" something entirely different, or was it just another name for SoS?
@@adamchurvis1 I am confused on that issue also myself. Maybe it just does not matter.
The gravy is universal. The differences are the meat, and flour-based selection... chipped beef, hamburger, breakfast sausage, eg- Bob Evans... then toast, or biscuits... mixing these around yields different recipes... but the white gravy is the catalyst!
I could eat that for every meal for a month. Nothing better to me.
Here in the south We call that SOS Sht on a Shingle. So yummy
I use chopped green onion, adds a bit of color to mine. Also, put mushrooms in mine
My grandma made this and always put a ton of black pepper in it. I think it was her signature dish.
Yes I do the same plus garlic powder more onions and brown the flour in another pan before adding it.
Looks delicious 😋. My dad would make this when I was little girl. 🤎
I like sour cream in mine. This sounds good for dinner tomorrow night.
favorite school lunch growing up: hamburger gravy over mashed potatoes, homemade rolls, green beans.
Now, they eat pizza, macky cheez, and chicken nugs.
This is so much better than what I’ve been making for years. I did add some salt at the table. Thank you for sharing. 7:22
I used to have this when I was a kid! SOS :D I might have to make it tonight!!
Thanks. I ate this my whole life, but never thought about that. It's really good. Glad it's authentic, too.
love that there is no judgement or pooh poohing of other techniques, very nice
I like it on cornbread stuffing. It’s the bomb
I know it as sos over toast growing up in the early 60's it was a good meal. Good job there making it once again.
Ahhh my mom used to make this, my dad loved it and so do i. I still make it for my husband 😊
By the way, I think the meat breaks up better when it's hot so I start with a hot pan
Wow, basic training at Fort Jackson 1962. Always looked forward to having this for breakfast after having hamburgers the night before. Yup, it was left over , greasy as $hit , but was hot at 5 AM before training. Um-um
Mom and dad made this all the time, it’s where I learned to hate uncooked onions. At 60ish I still can’t eat raw onion. If I cook the onions well it’s great. Thanks for your recipe.
Grew up eating this. Mom made it often. It was served over mashed potatoes.
Throw the meat into a hot pan. That way you can get a sear on the chopped meat for enhanced flavor.
Noodls, spuds, all that well and fine, but BISCUITS! And hot sauce of choice natch.
Simple version and my favorite. 2lbs ground beef browned and drained. 2 cans cream of mushroom soup, 1 16ounce container of sour cream. Serve over toast. Super easy, cheap and delicious
We were brought up on hamburger and gravy with mash potatoes.my kids loved it.
I don’t use soy sauce, but I always use nutmeg and sometimes add chopped peppers and some mushrooms. Love this stuff! I put it over hash browns, toast and over easy eggs
I also add minced garlic
Thank you for making these videos. I enjoy watching them and learning how to make meals better.
I'm happy they help. Thanks for watching 👍
My favorite winter comfort meal!
This looks so darn good - I'd brush my teeth with it👍
Heck Yeah!! That's what I'm talking about👍 I love it👌
My mom made this for our large family. She called it "Frizzled beef" and told us it was President Eisenhower's favorite dinner. We loved it over mashed potatoes.
It was years before I had a clue who Eisenhower was!
My mother called it, splash on the shingle because she didn't want to say sh-t.
YUM! Ate quite a bit of this poured over biscuits as a kid. Think I'll have to whup some up❤
Thank you for sharing the less fatty beef. I learned something new!❤
I was raised on this! Mom used to add a dash of soy sauce to give the gravy a better colour. My dad didn't like onions so she used onion powder...(sneakily)! Also we just used water...milk was for drinking! Lol!
At this point, my mom would have added a can of drained nixed veggies! Goulash according to her over anything! Filling and satisfying!!!
I will definitely try that recipe tomorrow that looks real good.
My mom called it "creamed hamburger". Ours had peas in it. Yum!
Mmm mmm good !
this brings back memories, Hamburger gravy over some biscuits, w/ scrambled eggs and hot sauce. My Mom used to make this all the time growing up and now I make it for my family. Its simple, hearty, and wont break the bank. Loved this vid!
I'd rather throw the meat into a hot pan,, because that will sear it and add to the flavor!
This is an old family recipe still make this to this day!! Mashed w fried gr beens bacon n onions !!! On my good memories
I like to use sausage, great over biscuits for breakfast
Looks delicious!

Love gravy and sauces.......
THANKS.......
Ground beef gravy 👋
My Father was in the Marine corps. I grew up on this. Dad made it best. It was the first dish I learned to make myself. Thanks Dad.
When I make this I use Better Than Bullion both beef and vegetable. Mostly I use the beef, but I've found that a small amount of the vegetable adds a depth to it that is really yummy.
Got have fresh cracked black pepper! Lots of it.
Cheers!
Whipple
You make things so similar to what I do. I make this all the time. Exact same steps. You are right, I never thought of putting soy sauce in. I will try that next time.
This vid made me subscribe. I am an American living in S/E Asia where the beef is hard to find and when it's found it's of breeding/feed poor quality, "so sauce that I can find the fixings for", sure makes for a winner for dinner! Thx!!!
Try tuna casserole or tuna melt.
@@MichaelTheophilus906 Good suggestion!
Yummy...been making this for years..
The ‘lifers’ always added lots of hot sauce!
Thank you for giving Metric (grams/mls) as well as Imperial (ounces) measurements in your videos.
After all there are only a few countries in the world that still use imperial!
Awesome video, thank you. 😊
Very nice. Thank you.
That's a recipe 😋. Thanks, I'll give it a shot.
I hope you enjoy 👍
I do this and make it stroganoffish by using beef broth, some sautéed or canned mushrooms and a bit of sour cream off heat. Great over noodles.
Nice!
Omgoodness❣️We used to have that when I was a kid. With toast and called it sh*t on the shingles 😂. Was sooooo good. Especially if you aren't a big fan of sausage.😋
Haven't had this in a while. Gonna have to though, soon. I've never put soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce in it, or beef bouillon... sounds interesting!
Hope you enjoy
@@thesauceandgravychannel thank you!
My darling husband loved it when I made this for him. He loved it over mashed potatoes. Thank you for a great video. 👍🏻
Awesome
