Diddy Kong Racing: Three unused tracks

  • I finally did it. After looking at Mattrizzle's notes on track headers in this game, I managed to mimic the low quality video that Koolboyman put up!
    Here's three unused tracks hidden away in Diddy Kong Racing's code, but you can't access them normally. The only way is to hex edit the model of the overworld map of adventure mode and force it to load the unused track models instead of the regular model. That's why there's still some overworld objects everywhere, it's a side effect of loading the unused tracks over the overworld.
    I would have also liked to record the test cube and unused snow track, but Matrizzle's notes didn't say which hex value was the test cube's, and the other, like Koolboyman said in his other video, loads too high up to reach, even with a plane. Heck, you can't even see it, the model loads that high up.
    Props to Koolboyman and SubDrag for finding these hidden gems, and Matrizzle for documenting Diddy Kong Racing's level headers. :)

    1st One: looks like a Beta Jungle Falls
    2nd one: looks like a hub world of sorts to the Beach World
    3rd: Looks to be a beta Hot Top Volcano which takes place Outside the Volcano instead of Inside like the final version.
    Those are my best guesses. If not that these levels seem like additional levels in-between Jungle Falls and Hot Top volcano, perhaps as a transition to each level?

    That first one genuinely does look like a development Adventure world, not a track. The giveaway for me is the tunnel leading up to the snow section (1:31). In game, you also come out of a tunnel and its through the doors ahead or continue right, just like the path here.

    At least to my mind, the section of the first unused track with the (moving) stone textures appears somewhat similar to the temple section of the DS remake's Strangled Shrine track.

    It looks to me like they realized how unfun the hovercraft is and decided to abandon as much of it as possible. The first one was obviously a hovercraft track (actually taking advantage of the land and sea functions of the vehicle which is pretty cool). The second looks like a hovercraft battle map. Even the third one looked like it intended to give you an element of choice with the hovercraft before they realized the kart was objectively better so they should just abandon it.

      ***** Probably just a glitch, for in Koolboyman's low quality video it doesn't happen.

      For anyone still wondering, it's not a glitch. The levels in DKR have set-ups which contain all of the objects. These are separate from the actual level geometry. In this video the maps are replacing the game's main hub, but keeping the same set up. This is why Taj, Wizpig's head, and all that other stuff is there. Anyways, there's an object that makes textures scroll. The main hub has 2, one for waterfalls and one for the river current. These objects have an assigned index from the level's list of textures along with values for which speed/direction to scroll. When they replaced the level, they changed the textures in the level but the texture scroll objects are still moving the textures at the same indices. This is why the textures are moving.

    I don't know why , but i get the feeling tat the first level is one of the forest levels in DKR DS, the 2nd one is a beta version of the Water World's battle mini-game, and the third level is a very early version of Hot Top Volcano

      stu 2d pot/sugar t They were never given any names. The only unused track that has one is Horseshoe Gulch, which many people know of already.

      +Dasutein Not easy ones. I accomplished this by changing some values in a hex editor while looking at Mattrizzle's notes on the game's level headers, which is kind of hard to explain on its own.

      +Dasutein Actually, nevermind. I found out how to access these courses myself. In the GoldenEye Setup Editor for Diddy Kong Racing, you can change the game configuration to force the Central Area/Hub World to load these maps. I'm still going through the options I can set, but for now, I can say that the first map shown in this video is has the header of 000A.

    what forms have mini maps following the road taken?

      Robert Alneda Only one, the waterfall track. You can only see it by more complex hacking that I don't know how to do, because it always loads the Fossil Canyon minimap as a placeholder.

      +birby100 We found that map texture years ago when we were able to replace one of the fire sprites in the Dino Domain entrance tunnel. At the time it was just a cool unused map and I think we made the connection when Koolboyman and Subdrag decompressed the game and found evidence of these unused levels. There's also a snowy version of the Dino Domain boss level and the test cube. There's a partial section of a beta hub world used in the cutscenes too.
      Thanks for the video though, it's been a while since I looked into the game.
