Lego Racers was my childhood. My brother and I played this game to death, to this day I still know every shortcut, every power up level, everything this game had. such a fun game.
There was just something so charming about that era of early 3d graphics. I think it had something to do with the ambiguity of what you were seeing, but I remember projecting a lot more onto those games than what was actually there. Games now are so well explained and well animated that I think it ruins a lot of the mystery.
+Jordan Greene Easy, being a stupid kid who just got Rollercoaster Tycoon Gold Edition from his grandmother and wants to install it ASAP. Or Age of Empires II, after years of playing AoE1 on a bunch of crappy laptops in LAN. Can't remember which it was, either was equally groundbreaking to me.
Did you know this game was turned into a Theme Park ride at Legoland Windsor! The ride only used a few tracks but you had a physical car to drive. You could even customise your car, think EPCOT's Test Track. Sadly it was replaced several years ago.
As a long time player of Lego Racers I have a few points to add (I've done well enough testing and playthroughs to confirm these) 1. You don't need to get 1st place to progress. 2nd place lets you continue to the next circuit, while 1st gives you the racing car of the boss you won against. 2. The Warp powerup doesn't teleport you, it zips you through the level very quickly. And it's buggy, especially in the Frost level you showed it in (Using it near the loop will make you stop at a fixed location). 3. The "Ruthless AI" is actually predictable: Redbeard and Johnny use red bricks (Johnny is hesitant to use them as he is an honorable hero), King Kahuka and The Baron use blue bricks, Batlord and Gypsy both use a variety and Rocket Racer uses Warp only. On another note, the bosses are always the fastest out of all racers (Just slightly but enough to beat the competition) 4. The fact you can't restart a specific race during a circuit only encourage players to be more strategic during the game. 5. You forgot to mention the Time Race mode, where you have to compete against the ghost of Veronica Volt. When you beat all the highscores, you get her racing car as well.
I am a long time player of Lego Racers as well but do you know anything about the superslide technique? Its like powerslide but more effective and its useful when doing time trials, speedruns and hard-to-reach powered up bricks.
1. He didn’t say you hard to get first but that you had to get podium. 2. Silly semantics. 3. AI can still be cheap. 4. It’s a kids game. Get that get good garbage out of here. Games should have choices.
Fantastic video, Clint! I absolutely love this game and it's one of my personal favorite racers, you certainly did it justice! I don't think it's all nostalgia but it truly is a game that I can't help but go back to from time to time.
I did not remember ever having played this game... up until you showed your own car racing at around 3:30, and then that sting of nostalgia hit. Ah, I used to have a car looking just like that!
Did you know that you can still play it at Lego-land (At least the one in Windsor) Shockingly it's still very popular with us waiting to use for at least 20 minutes. (This was 2 years ago but for the game to still be regularly played in 2015 is still remarkable)
7:42 Something I do want to add to that, even if I'm a bit late... Do NOT play the PS1 version. For your life. It suffers from a lot more than a drop in frame rate and graphics, it actually suffers from INPUT LAG which renders nearly the entire game completely unplayable. I haven't checked the N64 version but my experience with emulating it was at least much better than my experience with the PS1 version, though N64 emulators are also horribly inaccurate to the real thing so I couldn't tell you for sure. As for SafeDisc, it's present on the original 1999 version, but it was axed from all releases from 2001 and beyond. From what I know, basically any version that doesn't have that green disc design seen in the video doesn't have SafeDisc.
Great video, I played this game a lot as a kid. The Lego Racers game i have, and other Lego games, has Lego studs on the side of the CD cover, so they stick together. I would have thought all them had that
I got the game in a collection. It came with Lego island and the rock raiders. I very much enjoyed Lego racing and Lego island, but I have to say, Lego rock raiders was the best of the bunch. It was so awesome, the only downside to the game was that it didn't feature a free mode where you could just mine with out any objective.
And a very annoying narrator who kept on telling you there was an avalanche(or whatever that was called in the english version), every bloody time that happened... which was, like, every 5 seconds on some maps... Still, a forgivable flaw.
I bought that at a thrift store back when I was a kid but rock raiders would have been great if it had a free mode like legoland. Still they were all fun games at the end of the day.
The LEGO games before Star Wars were all different in many genres. LGR if you won't review them all, then I'll recomend you to check out at least Rock Raiders. It's actually a really interesting one.
Man, I loved the first Lego Racers! It was pretty much our Mario Kart during the 32/64-Bit generation. (That, and Diddy Kong Racing, another fantastic 3D kart racer) In fact, I would love a new Lego Racers, with online multiplayer, Steam Workshop support for your own creations and maybe even without the different base plates in favor of complete customizability (within certain restrictions), Nuts and Bolts style!
This was one of my favorite games growing up! It was the beginning of my obsession with cars and building stuff. Now I'm a development engineer for General Motors!
This game was my life-blood for several year. I would dream about it, 'pretend' play it while outside. I miss that feeling dearly, and I must revisit this game for the nostalgia hit when I get the chance.
This one is super nostalgic for me, I went back a couple months ago and was also surprised and the difficulty. This and the early hot wheels games really encouraged long play sessions and having friends come over to help beat the game. Very good times
Man the memories I have playing this as a kid are priceless!!! I still remember it like it was yesterday! I even think this was my first kart racers game! and you’re right, this game is challenging for kids. I just remembered dumping a ridiculous amount of time into this game and beating all the bosses. Your video really took me back! Thx 🙏🏻 ☺️ 🎮
when this game was new, at the time it had one of the best car's visual customization options in a game. That's why it'll always be one of my most favorite games growing up.
Lego Stunt Rally was then one where you barely had to stear, right? I completed most of the races by putting a rubber band on my joystick trigger. And yes, I played all the Lego racing games with a joystick.
This and Lego Racers 2 were my favourite racing games in my childhood! Along with LegoLand, which sparked my love for simulation genre... I wish they would remaster all of them someday!
I love this game so much. The disc got so much use that it eventually shattered and took the drive with it after 10 years or so. Still got a digital backup, though. Thank you so much for covering this, LGR! Gonna revisit it again right now.
Theres a release custom installer that allows the game to run fine on windows 10, x64. Its a great game, I remember wanting to buy at BJs in 1999, bought it and my system couldnt run it properly because my Ati rage only had 4mb lol. Years later I bought and made it a mission to beat it. I am surprised LGR didnt talk about Veronica Voltage. I beat her, and shes the true final boss. Rocket Racer was nothing to her lol. I recall basically having to run perfect races to beat her with all lvl 3s. Great memories still have my original copy :)
I cannot believe you finally reviewed one of the most iconic games of my childhood! I knew the day would come! Clint never disappoints!! You might have earned yourself a patron
Hell yeah. Loved this game! You should give Lego Rock Raiders (PC) a go if you haven't - it's a non-combat focused RTS and it's something I wanna try to recreate myself someday.
I've just graduated from a game dev undergrad degree, heading into a masters. It isn't a particularly complicated mechanic in a basic form, and it's one I've wanted to do for a while. I would have done it sooner if anyone else I'd worked with had played this.
hmm, I played Lego Island, racers and a few others back in the day, but I've never played rock raiders. Everyone here seems to love it, so I might have to source a copy :P
As someone who first encountered Lego Racers 2, I wholly anticipate a review of that too! That was my jam when I was a kid and it iterated so much on the first game it's incredible.
Man, this was such a great part of my childhood. I always played this game at my best friend's house, since we didn't have a computer back then. It was loads of fun! And it wasn't too easy either. I remember playing the last race over and over again, because we just couldn't beat the last boss who was using warps like crazy. And man, were we proud after finally winning! The nostalgia is real here :)
I envied my best friend in elementary school for having a copy of LEGO Racers right around 2000. We crowded around his Compaq frequently after school to sit down and play. Glad to see this game get some love, Clint.
I gotta say those load up and menu screens took me back. I didn't grow up with a lot of games as a kid and this was one of the games I happen to have and boy did I play it a lot. I'd even start new games and "speed run" the game to see how long it took for me to finish. I went as far as to try and make the cars I made in game in real life.
I'm so happy you think its a very unforgiving game, this and Lego Rock Raiders were my first two PC games and for years I thought I was just terrible at this game! Thank you Clint for the review, I enjoyed this trip down memory lane so much I'm gonna dig out my Lego Brick-trimmed copy and see if I can finally beat this game once and for all!
It was in my recommended in 2019 and oh my god! Thanks you so much for doing this! It bring back so much memories playing demo of this yearly in 2000 when i was little over and over again on my WinME, Celeron 633Mhz, 32MB of RAM and godly Riva TNT2.. Such good times back then. :)
My fastest LGR click to date. This game neeeds to come back, somehow. I know WB has exclusivity right now, but High Voltage Studios is still around and a rerelease is easy money. I still remember every sound, that awesome portal effect, every car I built, every song... it was just perfect in every way. Any plans on looking at Loco (babby's first Factorio) or Creator (Garry's Mod before it was cool)?
It’s TT games who develop those games, Telltale is the developer behind those story driven games (The Walking Dead, Wolf Among Us, Minecraft story mode, etc)
This is one of my favourite games ever. Mainly because as a huge Lego fan this provided me with a way to build a car and actually play with it in the most amazing way I could probably have imagined. I would really love to see a new Lego racers game at some point for sure.
loved this game as a kid. the final race is insane, and as I remember it basically required that you get the wormhole powerup as many times as you could to get first place, and if you missed even one you had to start the race over.
oh man thank you for making this video. I personally played Racers 2 a LOT more than the first one. I enjoyed your Lego Island video, glad to see you do one for Racers!
I LOVED this game when I was 11. I loved designing my own cars and then making themed racers and giving them puns for names, and I took the time to learn all the tracks and powerups
Think Lego Racers on Game Boy Color was the 1st game i ever put hours into as a kid. Thank you for another stellar review Clint! your vids do a great job of keeping me company at work lol
Wow fond memories of playing this game! Lego Racers was in fact one of the very first racing games I ever played and I quickly became addicted to it. I've been playing it all my life to this day, and it never gets old! Somehow though, I wish they would do a remake of this game as well as add a few improvements. 1) When you use a warp it should just drop you onto the track at normal speed instead of spiting you out, or firing you out into a wall as you see on the video. 2) The powder keg in hazards should be dropped onto the track and not throw out as it goes sky high and misses your closest rivals and have it blow up after a few seconds or when someone hits it. 3) Mix some of the other races around in further circuits Like say have Ann Droid, Robin Hood and their home circuits in the Baron circuit, and have Royal King and Commander Cold and their tracks in the J.Thunder Circuit just to make the 4th and 5th circuits a bit more interesting. 4) The other racers participating other than the circuit champions should have more interesting cars instead of the same go-kart style machine. 5) And finally to include some of the original circuit champions in the Rocket Racer Circuit. This should include the more challenging racers in my opinion Gypsy Moth, Basil The Batload, Captain Redbeard and possibly Nova Hunter with the one go-kart. lol Other than that it's a great game and served me well!
I literally dropped my jaw when i saw this video in my youtube news feed :) This was a childhood favorite of mine and my friends who turned out to be absolutely amazing at it and knew every single secret :)
Great review, LGR. Very nostalgic seeing that box being opened and the contents. Loved the gameplay videos and explanation. The only thing you didn't mention was the Time Trials feature, where you are up against Veronica Voltage. Doing that was a great way to discover hidden short cuts - Veronica knew all about those, and you could follow her to find out.
I loved this game so much I took it upon myself to build all the boss cars in real bricks last year, it's a shame there were never any sets released for this game like there were for LEGO Racers 2. Also for those curious you can find a launcher for LEGO Racers online that allows you to play in whatever resolution your monitor is in, it doesn't like scaling above the native resolution so there is that issue but playing a game originally intended for 640 x 480 in 1920 x 1080 is fantastic.
Hell yes LGR, this was by far my fav game when i was a little kiddo :D I remember my heart exploding when i beat the rocket racer for the first time after trying to beat him like a hundret times. good memories
one of my favourite games as a child - I sunk so many hours into the sequel as well, forcing you to build a new car for each area adds a surprising amount of creativity, and the completely separate Drome Racers had such a god damn cool aesthetic that I can't help but love it too
Funny for such a short game that can be completed in about an hour and a half I spent so much playing this over and over and over as a kid and never got tired of it. This game was my childhood. It made me want to get the older Lego system sets too. When I did I was so fascinated with the mini figs like king Kahuku, basil the bat lord, and gypsy moth. 😂
Lego Racers was my childhood. My brother and I played this game to death, to this day I still know every shortcut, every power up level, everything this game had. such a fun game.
Valve News Network
Oh hey there
Same bro! It's so fun when our gaming histories seem to sync up even across very different brands and genres!
Idem
Same here! I play it still once in a while.
Yeah, me too
Legit anyone of my era's Childhood was spent playing this game.
Budget-Builds Official oh hi love your channel
Oh yes
Lego Racers was my childhood! Tt should bring it back with some good graphics! (it'd also be refreshing to see a new styled lego game.)
Allx360 Yes, with no partnerships with other conpanies, just pure Lego titles!
Firestarter Agreed! I'm kind of tired with the current Lego games right now.
***** Yeah, the last thing I wanted to see was goddamn Lego Sonic and Knight Rider in the same ad/game....
Lego Racers 2 was mine!
yes, bring it back!
There was just something so charming about that era of early 3d graphics. I think it had something to do with the ambiguity of what you were seeing, but I remember projecting a lot more onto those games than what was actually there. Games now are so well explained and well animated that I think it ruins a lot of the mystery.
Maaan, you took me waaaay back. Thank you for this awesome video and the nostalgia trip. You rock.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I guess you can say he "Teleported" you Waaayy. back! ;)
me 2 i remember playing this game when i was like 5y/o and thought that wormhole thingy was so cool
Lego Racers was one of my favorite PC games growing up.
Exactly. This was my childhood!
Mine too! That and Road Rash were an amazing part of being a kid.
The day the disc cracked on me was one of the saddest days of my life. BRING IT BACK!
Bad Texture how does one crack a disc on accident??
+Jordan Greene Easy, being a stupid kid who just got Rollercoaster Tycoon Gold Edition from his grandmother and wants to install it ASAP. Or Age of Empires II, after years of playing AoE1 on a bunch of crappy laptops in LAN. Can't remember which it was, either was equally groundbreaking to me.
OMG, that blue portal too me back!
You now have the Build Mode music stuck in your head.
Or maybe that's just me. But it's probably you now, too.
By my it's more the title music in the main menu.
title music bro
Even the mere thought of this game gets that song stuck in my head for the next week
The old days of Lego.
This game features the classic Lego sets, before everyting was a license
Aadolf Lego City Undercover sorta averts this though..!
I mean, the licences sets are fine, but seeing more original stuff would be great too
Agreed. Bring back quality castle, space and pirate themes! Also Aquazone.
Leo Howler
sucks that lego brought pirates for one year.
Did you know this game was turned into a Theme Park ride at Legoland Windsor! The ride only used a few tracks but you had a physical car to drive. You could even customise your car, think EPCOT's Test Track. Sadly it was replaced several years ago.
As a long time player of Lego Racers I have a few points to add (I've done well enough testing and playthroughs to confirm these)
On another note, the bosses are always the fastest out of all racers (Just slightly but enough to beat the competition)
Well said good sir
1. He didn’t say you hard to get first but that you had to get podium.
2. Silly semantics.
3. AI can still be cheap.
4. It’s a kids game. Get that get good garbage out of here. Games should have choices.
Sweet! Lego racers. We're getting closer to Rock Raiders!
Fantastic video, Clint! I absolutely love this game and it's one of my personal favorite racers, you certainly did it justice! I don't think it's all nostalgia but it truly is a game that I can't help but go back to from time to time.
I have enjoyed this game a lot back in 2000. I've played it again a few years ago.
Lego had a knack of making everything and anything fun. I used to play Lego chess for hours
Hmmmm....
LEGO should start a funeral service
Chess is a good game tho. I remember Lego Chess and Lego Racers fondly tho. The animations were so much fun in Lego Chess
@@Pijawek hahaha lol
Please make a lego Rock Raiders PC video!!!!!!
It is the best Lego game so please!
Lego Racers 2 and Legoland were also nice.
Zafran Orbian yes pls. It really was the best Lego game.
Zafran Orbian I got stuck in rock raiders about 12 years ago and I haven't gone back since
Rock Raiders is the one I want to review next. Just looking for a complete in box copy!
Holy cow, I still have that game. So many memories, I remember it being really tough in later levels too!
Lazy Game Reviews the hype is real !!!
I may still have this game.
Time to go look! I know I have #2, but #1 may have gone off to yard sale land a decade ago.
I did not remember ever having played this game... up until you showed your own car racing at around 3:30, and then that sting of nostalgia hit. Ah, I used to have a car looking just like that!
SAME! I had a literal car that was just the same 2x3 grey block over and over, making it a rock
I can't believe it, I played this game throught just yesterday! I love it so much! Thanks for the awesome Video. Your videos are simply awesome.

The N64 version is pretty much the PC version, no load times or game-breaking slowdowns. It's good.
I don't remember an input lag or frame drop problem on the PS1 version...
If you experienced input lag then something was wrong with the game file or the emulator, I have the ps1 game on disc, there's no input lag
Great video, I played this game a lot as a kid. The Lego Racers game i have, and other Lego games, has Lego studs on the side of the CD cover, so they stick together. I would have thought all them had that
wow the nostalgia hit hard with this one, thank you LGR!
After so many years he's still funny
God I played this and Rock Raiders so much.
foist Rock Raiders gets hella complicated and difficult. idk why but I often found myself not bothering to progress through the storyline.
***** I think the last time I played it, it was either around high school or during the time I went to college. Either way, I never went very far.
Is this what inspired you to join the military?
foist
For me it was this and LEGO Stunt Rally.

I bought that at a thrift store back when I was a kid but rock raiders would have been great if it had a free mode like legoland. Still they were all fun games at the end of the day.
YES! yes, more pre-Star Wars LEGO game reviews PLEASE! Thank you so much!
The LEGO games before Star Wars were all different in many genres. LGR if you won't review them all, then I'll recomend you to check out at least Rock Raiders. It's actually a really interesting one.

*oof*
This game was my life-blood for several year. I would dream about it, 'pretend' play it while outside. I miss that feeling dearly, and I must revisit this game for the nostalgia hit when I get the chance.
This game was the shit back then
moh you I got so frustrated and angry when I played this game. The AI is so unforgivingly difficult.
Ever try to beat the Time Trial mode to unlock the special vehicle set? Now there is a frustrating experience
This one is super nostalgic for me, I went back a couple months ago and was also surprised and the difficulty. This and the early hot wheels games really encouraged long play sessions and having friends come over to help beat the game. Very good times
If you beat the ghost on all the tracks you will unlock "a secret" lego set
Uuuuugh that bitch was hard as fuck to beat. Goddamn you Veronica Voltage.
Rainbow Dash Idk, I had the PC version
@@Donfuy Shit was just rough. I might've only beaten one lol
Man the memories I have playing this as a kid are priceless!!! I still remember it like it was yesterday! Lego rock raiders next? :)
That was one of my favorite games in my childhood, pretty unique as well imo.
when this game was new, at the time it had one of the best car's visual customization options in a game.
That's why it'll always be one of my most favorite games growing up.
one of my favorites. Can you do Lego Stunt Rally?
dude that game was amazing. I still have my copy
god that game was so hard, let me tell you. the ice races were the worst
Vectrex4Life reviewed that game and loads more LEGO games and they're pretty well done videos.
Yes! Yes! YES! My whole freaking family played this game, and with a joystick for some reason, lol.
Ben M. Same dude
I love this game so much. The disc got so much use that it eventually shattered and took the drive with it after 10 years or so. Still got a digital backup, though. Thank you so much for covering this, LGR! Gonna revisit it again right now.
Really adore this game, still one of my favorite Kart racers.
1. Diddy kong racing
2. Mario kart: Double dash
3. Lego racers
Thats a good list
Yes! This was the first game I ever played on PC! So glad you are covering it!
Also absolutely loved the catchy menu music haha

One of those childhood games that introduced you to depth and difficulty, and how those things can keep you hooked.
You should try cashing in those Voodoo rebates.
Wow the nostalgia is strong with this one. I appreciate your vids man. Brings back my childhood. You earned another subscriber!
i accidentally dropped my N64 Copy out my window when i was a kid. i foud it in a bush 12 years later and it works fine
I freaking loved this game as a kid! Glad to see you coming around to it Clint :-) Great review!
1:09 Wait, they had Lego Friends in the 90s?
It wasn't the same lego friends as today.
As someone who first encountered Lego Racers 2, I wholly anticipate a review of that too! That was my jam when I was a kid and it iterated so much on the first game it's incredible.
YES, my very first game!!!
I am from 1994, so this game was one of my very first. I have some very, very good memories from this game. Delighted to see you do a video on it!
the best days. still have it laying right gere

This was my childhood! Did live streams of this game recently - an absolute classic. :)
what up! Fav youtuber :)
The "power up power up" mechanic is also in Crash Team Racing, you collect 10x Wumpa fruit to power up most of the power ups.
Ah, CTR, another great kart racer from the PS1 days. This games' powerup system is more advanced though.
What was up with the brief rhyming session at the start? xD
I played this sooo much as a kid.
Lego Racers 2 next.
Ah so nostalgic, I love this game, one of my first game ever. Thank you for making this video.
I would want a modern LEGO Racers. I'm sick of Telltale's collectathon copy and paste platforming Lego games.
It’s TT games who develop those games, Telltale is the developer behind those story driven games (The Walking Dead, Wolf Among Us, Minecraft story mode, etc)
@@TSutton yeah...I miss those times when I was naive and young.
This and Lego racers 2 were on my first laptop back in 2006-7 haha, played for hours!
I saw that Driver box at the start, please do a video on it! It's one of my favourite driving games.
You bet it'll happen, one of my favorites.
One of the greatest games of all time.
I hope you savored the smell of that brand new box interior.
oh man thank you for making this video.
This brings back so many memories from my childhood. I played this along with Lego Rock Raiders, Creator, and Loco. Good times.
This should include the more challenging racers in my opinion Gypsy Moth, Basil The Batload, Captain Redbeard and possibly Nova Hunter with the one go-kart. lol
Other than that it's a great game and served me well!
Oh man this was one of my favorite games growing up glad to see LGR doing a review of it
I literally dropped my jaw when i saw this video in my youtube news feed :) This was a childhood favorite of mine and my friends who turned out to be absolutely amazing at it and knew every single secret :)
One of the first games I played as a kid, besides Lego Island 2. Thanks for the video, brought back so many memories!
Hell yes LGR, this was by far my fav game when i was a little kiddo :D
I remember my heart exploding when i beat the rocket racer for the first time after trying to beat him like a hundret times. good memories
I had this on N64 and enjoyed it. It was different enough to offer a nice alternative, and the customization was pretty cool.
one of my favourite games as a child - I sunk so many hours into the sequel as well, forcing you to build a new car for each area adds a surprising amount of creativity, and the completely separate Drome Racers had such a god damn cool aesthetic that I can't help but love it too
I remember the sequel to this being amazing since you could explore fairly large maps when you werent racing
I loved that old LEGO: Racers arcade attraction at LEGOLAND, it was in Windsor at least
Very happy to see you review this. Got a lot of mileage out of this on the N64 back in the day.
Oh the nostalgia. Had hours of fun on split screen. Thx for the video!
Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Soccer Mania was another favourite of mine.
