They should just give Blastoise Stance Change-like ability. If you use a defensive move, he enter inside his shell, if you use an offensive move, he comes out.
Something like Aeglislash but if only it had gen 3 move where it it’s get +1 def but still an offensive move. It could be brought back and give a +1 in spD/Def while changing its stance so it could even be more bulkier :) it can have access to rapid spin so it could be a trick room abuser and speedy tank >:)

I like the IDEA of rain dish for Blastoise, but it doesn't have ANYTHING to put it above other rain dish users besides rapid spin, but I feel that's an unrelated trait... It even makes sense in terms of it's starter trio, all three got weather based abilities that do something different. Venusaur gets speed (why), Charizard gets power, and Blastoise gets longevity. However unlike the other two, Blastoise doesn't have anything unique to offer within the role it was provided. So it got one of the most broken move in the game on top of its mega (which is an illegal combination in the official games) and went to Ubers in a completely fanmade format. Need I remind you it's NUBL the last time it appeared in the current timeline? And that's even _with_ said broken move. So unless Megas ever come back, Shell Smash still isn't close to enough.

I'm a total Blastiose fanboy, and I'm convinced Gamefreak just doesn't like Blastiose. Like you said, he's the neglected child. Whenever time comes to hand out buffs the developers boost the potted plant and dragon wannabe enthusiastically, but it feels like they just throw Blastiose some crumbs because they HAVE too. His buffs never seem as thought-out or focused as his siblings. It's not just competitively either, it's also in fanservice. When the Megas got revealed what they did to Blastiose was disgraceful. The community was clowning on Mega Venasuar and I had no idea why, coz compared to Mega Blast it was the Mona Lisa. Mega Blastiose looked like a fucking joke, which THE ARTIST ADMITTED THEMSLEVES in an interview saying they thought it "looked silly". I'm convinced little to NO effort went into Mega Blastiose design at all. At least, they did him justice with his Gmax, he looks proper badass in that form.
Give Blastoise recover and stealth rock (cause why not) and, maybe hot take, but PLEASE go back and tweak the stats of some of the older starters to be a bit more min maxed. In Blastoise's case, give it a special attack actually befitting of a turtle with giant ass cannons on its back.

It would give a new option to help one and done walls like goodra while adding utility at a cost of more hp regained

A place where blastoise is incredible is unofficial National Dex formats. In singles the mega with shell smash is Ubers. In National Dex doubles, the mega is alright but the base form and even eviolite wartortle are under explored but honestly kind of great with the same follow me helping hand combination as electabuzz and Magmar but now stacked with fake out and a better defensive stat spread as wartortle or a fake out faster than incineroar and rillaboom as blastoise

With all the ability changes happening in Gen 9 to older Pokemon (Wind Rider Shiftry, Competitive Empoleon) we should give Blastoise something that isn't rain dish. Idk, give him swift swim or some dumb shit
I like water types, and Blastoise has a good design, but it is very vanilla. I don't think it's bad, but it just doesn't have anything that stands out. You could probably combine rain dish with aqua ring to give it good survivability in rain, especially with leftovers, but there isn't much for it to do with all that hp regen.
Rain Dish isn't a *terrible* ability but it definitely did not make Blastoise any more viable except for fringe scenarios when compared to two other great Water-type spinners when it mattered the most in Gen V OU. Tentacruel got the same ability but had vastly better speed and special bulk to boot, the former being useful if you decided to run Haze, and it even got Rapid Spin as a big F you to Blastoise. Hell, even Clear Body and Liquid Ooze could be useful in niche matchups, the latter being good against Ferrothorn since it could regain lost HP in the rain while fishing for Scald burns while only taking neutral damage from Power Whip. Starmie was another great Water-type Rapid Spin user. While it had less bulk, it had reliable recovery in Recover and Natural Cure let it switch in on status move and Scald users. You could even run Rest and just switch out for full recovery. But it was also just really good offensively with its almost perfect coverage and decent firepower on top of very good speed (if you used it offensively it would even outrun Latios which was a premiere OU pokemon and threaten it with an Ice Beam). Even Analytic could be useful on a Choice Specs or Life Orb set since it works when the opponent switches out too. Even with its mega evolution, you could argue that Clawitzer was a viable substitution for Blastoise in Gen 6 UU given that it had the same ability and moveset (although it also got U-Turn as a pivoting move). Sure, it was in RU while Mega-Blastoise was in UU, was slower and had less firepower and bulk so it often needed to use Specs to carry itself, but you also didn't have to use a Mega Stone to get a mediocre special attacker. That slot could have been better spent on Mega-Beedrill, Ampharos, Aerodactyl, Aggron, Sharpedo, Swampert - or Absol. So it's not that Clawitzer was better, it was just another reasonable option that could do much of the same without sacrificing a mega slot on your team. So yeah, Blastoise sorta sucks. With its meagre stats it's hard to imagine it'd even be that great as a Swift Swim user before it got banned in Gen V when compared to Ludicolo, Kabutops, Gorebyss, Omastar and Kingdra which all offered better offense and defense.
Man, seeing Gmax Venusaur and Charizard again gave me PTSD. The fact that 2 STARTERS were viable for all of Gen 8, even after box legendaries were added to VGC drove me insane.
Blastoise should have it's hidden ability changed to mega-launcher. Mega-launcher should also be changed to affect cannon/beam/blast-type moves and/or some of said moves be treated as a pulse-type move.
Id love to potentially see one of these powerpoints on another starter: Meganium Seriously, why does gamefreak seemingly want to forget they ever made meganium? There has been several chances to give meganium some sort of attention/buffs, but they haven't given it shit. -Gen 5, most pokemon are given a dreamworld ability, often times gigabuffing said pokemon, and being the clear choice of ability on it. Feraligatr gwts SHEER FORCE, and typhlosion gets the less eye opening but still solid flash fire (it just kinda spams stab fire moves anyway) What did meganium get? Leaf gaurd, because when i set up sun, I OF COURSE, want to use it defensively right? Man what a shit ability. -Gen 6, perfect chance for a mega evolution, but nope, nothing. Granted, none of the gen 2 starters got them, but I would have loved to see them all get one (especially meganium), instead of being sandwhiched between the gen 1 and 3 starters that did get megas. -Gen 9: Recently, gamefreak has shown that they are not against changing abilities on pokemon, and giving them better/more unique ones. Look at wind rider shiftry, and competitive in place of defiant on empoleon. Theres so much potential for a cool mew hidden ability for meganium in place of the awful leaf gaurd. Its a reptile, so something like marvel scale or even multiscale could work. Perhaps even something like grassy surge (though, then it would just be riding the coattails or rillaboom) My personal suggestion would be : Triage Imagine meganium having priority synthesis, giga drain, and leech seed, that would at LEAST land it a spot in PU All of the starters (including meg of course) are back, and alot of them got some neat new moves. What did meganium get? Knock off i guess? Knock off is of course welcome, but little too late Its just really sad as someone who genuinely likes meganium and never hears the end of "how bad it is"
I really hope all the starters are back because Gamefreak decided to level the playing field for all of them, Torterra got Shell Smash and Empoleon got Competitive. Doubled speed and an amped life orb in the sun are not equal to leftovers in rain, baseline mega launcher could work or Storm Drain.

Drizzle would make a bit of sense on Blastoise. It's one of relatively few pokemon to learn a weather setting move via level up. I can't even think of any other natural learners of rain dance off the top of my head; I know they're out there, just not who they are
@@Dr.J42 Pelipper would still be better for most teams, Roost+Uturn+ Hurricane is really, really solid, especially since Hurricane covers things like Ludicolo. Blastoise has its niches, and with Fake Out and Yawn might be better in Doubles. I THINK it's also slower, which is important for weather wars, but niether is slower than Torkoal, Hippo, or Ttar so probably moot.

It'll never happen given how conservative GameFreak is with altering base stats, but I think Blastoise should be given a rework from a defensive all-rounder into a proper tank. Cut its Speed and Attack, beef up its HP and Special Attack in exchange.
National Dex SV shows what Blastoise could be if it could reach its full potential. The combination of shell smash and mega form breaks Blastoise like no other starter before it.
What if blastoise got an ability that makes all beam moves, bullet moves, and hydro pump act as spread moves in doubles? It would keep the hidden damage nerf of 3/4 damage when hitting multiple targets but with shell smash it could probably do something cool in doubles

It should’ve had massive Defense and Special Attack stats, with ok HP and Attack, below average Special Defense and terrible speed.

To those curious: Mega Blastoise is currently banned from National Dex OU, as Shell Smash Mega Blastoise is exactly as good as you think it would be

A place where blastoise is incredible is unofficial National Dex formats. In singles the mega with shell smash is Ubers. In National Dex doubles, the mega is alright but the base form and even eviolite wartortle are under explored but honestly kind of great with the same follow me helping hand combination as electabuzz and Magmar but now stacked with fake out and a better defensive stat spread as wartortle or a fake out faster than incineroar and rillaboom as blastoise

I like water types, and Blastoise has a good design, but it is very vanilla. I don't think it's bad, but it just doesn't have anything that stands out. You could probably combine rain dish with aqua ring to give it good survivability in rain, especially with leftovers, but there isn't much for it to do with all that hp regen.

The primary competitive format I play is "Natdex Manotypes" and Mega blastoise is the only one of the starter trio that got banned from the format.
Blastoise is decent in gen IX as a bulky white herb shell smash sweeper that can hit hard and still take a punch.
Rain Dish isn't a *terrible* ability but it definitely did not make Blastoise any more viable except for fringe scenarios when compared to two other great Water-type spinners when it mattered the most in Gen V OU. Tentacruel got the same ability but had vastly better speed and special bulk to boot, the former being useful if you decided to run Haze, and it even got Rapid Spin as a big F you to Blastoise. Hell, even Clear Body and Liquid Ooze could be useful in niche matchups, the latter being good against Ferrothorn since it could regain lost HP in the rain while fishing for Scald burns while only taking neutral damage from Power Whip. Starmie was another great Water-type Rapid Spin user. While it had less bulk, it had reliable recovery in Recover and Natural Cure let it switch in on status move and Scald users. You could even run Rest and just switch out for full recovery. But it was also just really good offensively with its almost perfect coverage and decent firepower on top of very good speed (if you used it offensively it would even outrun Latios which was a premiere OU pokemon and threaten it with an Ice Beam). Even Analytic could be useful on a Choice Specs or Life Orb set since it works when the opponent switches out too.
Even with its mega evolution, you could argue that Clawitzer was a viable substitution for Blastoise in Gen 6 UU given that it had the same ability and moveset (although it also got U-Turn as a pivoting move). Sure, it was in RU while Mega-Blastoise was in UU, was slower and had less firepower and bulk so it often needed to use Specs to carry itself, but you also didn't have to use a Mega Stone to get a mediocre special attacker. That slot could have been better spent on Mega-Beedrill, Ampharos, Aerodactyl, Aggron, Sharpedo, Swampert - or Absol. So it's not that Clawitzer was better, it was just another reasonable option that could do much of the same without sacrificing a mega slot on your team.
So yeah, Blastoise sorta sucks. With its meagre stats it's hard to imagine it'd even be that great as a Swift Swim user before it got banned in Gen V when compared to Ludicolo, Kabutops, Gorebyss, Omastar and Kingdra which all offered better offense and defense.
Man, seeing Gmax Venusaur and Charizard again gave me PTSD. The fact that 2 STARTERS were viable for all of Gen 8, even after box legendaries were added to VGC drove me insane.
Blastoise and Venu got the short end of the stick with stats. Venu got a busted ability but 515 for a starter is still weaker.
To be fair Mega Blastoise is an uber in National Dex
Blastoise has such a diverse moveset but cant do nothing if its ability gives it a bowl to drink from when it rains
Imagine if blastoise got a hidden ability like weak armor or swift swim, it would definitely be better than rain dish
all it would ever really need is a spatk boost to become at least notable IMHO
Blastoise should have it's hidden ability changed to mega-launcher. Mega-launcher should also be changed to affect cannon/beam/blast-type moves and/or some of said moves be treated as a pulse-type move.

Seriously, why does gamefreak seemingly want to forget they ever made meganium? There has been several chances to give meganium some sort of attention/buffs, but they haven't given it shit.
-Gen 5, most pokemon are given a dreamworld ability, often times gigabuffing said pokemon, and being the clear choice of ability on it.
Feraligatr gwts SHEER FORCE, and typhlosion gets the less eye opening but still solid flash fire (it just kinda spams stab fire moves anyway)
What did meganium get?

-Gen 6, perfect chance for a mega evolution, but nope, nothing.
Granted, none of the gen 2 starters got them, but I would have loved to see them all get one (especially meganium), instead of being sandwhiched between the gen 1 and 3 starters that did get megas.
-Gen 9: Recently, gamefreak has shown that they are not against changing abilities on pokemon, and giving them better/more unique ones. Look at wind rider shiftry, and competitive in place of defiant on empoleon.
Theres so much potential for a cool mew hidden ability for meganium in place of the awful leaf gaurd. Its a reptile, so something like marvel scale or even multiscale could work. Perhaps even something like grassy surge (though, then it would just be riding the coattails or rillaboom)
My personal suggestion would be : Triage
Imagine meganium having priority synthesis, giga drain, and leech seed, that would at LEAST land it a spot in PU
All of the starters (including meg of course) are back, and alot of them got some neat new moves. What did meganium get? Knock off i guess? Knock off is of course welcome, but little too late
Its just really sad as someone who genuinely likes meganium and never hears the end of "how bad it is"
I really hope all the starters are back because Gamefreak decided to level the playing field for all of them, Torterra got Shell Smash and Empoleon got Competitive. Doubled speed and an amped life orb in the sun are not equal to leftovers in rain, baseline mega launcher could work or Storm Drain.
They should just remake gen 1 but with Grass and Water Charizard and then gaslight us into thinking it was always this way.

Drizzle would make a bit of sense on Blastoise. It's one of relatively few pokemon to learn a weather setting move via level up. I can't even think of any other natural learners of rain dance off the top of my head; I know they're out there, just not who they are
Blastoise would be so good. It would be better Poli, and maybe better Pelliper(has a different niche). Fake Out, Yawn, and STAB in rain. Crazy

Pelipper would still be better for most teams, Roost+Uturn+ Hurricane is really, really solid, especially since Hurricane covers things like Ludicolo.
Blastoise has its niches, and with Fake Out and Yawn might be better in Doubles. I THINK it's also slower, which is important for weather wars, but niether is slower than Torkoal, Hippo, or Ttar so probably moot.

Blastoise needs to be water/steel and shell smash, it would be ou or even ubers.
It'll never happen given how conservative GameFreak is with altering base stats, but I think Blastoise should be given a rework from a defensive all-rounder into a proper tank. Cut its Speed and Attack, beef up its HP and Special Attack in exchange.

What if blastoise got an ability that makes all beam moves, bullet moves, and hydro pump act as spread moves in doubles? It would keep the hidden damage nerf of 3/4 damage when hitting multiple targets but with shell smash it could probably do something cool in doubles
