all it took to make the rock type good was a godly perfect stat spread. And an excellent signature move. And reliable recovery. And status immunity. And an extra type resistance. And a generation gimmick that lets you not be rock type hey no wait
All a rock type needed was a completely broken ability, a move that allows it to punish someone for following a type match up while also forcing good damage no matter what, immunity to status, good stats, recovery, and another way to exploit type match ups by not being a rock type if it choos.... oh wait, I'm sure I can say it better than that. Where's gen 5 terrakion?
Pretty impressive that they finally made a good defensive rock type, and all it took was a great stat spread, reliable recovery and stealth rock, a broken signature move, and the ability to not be a rock type.

I mean, the night and day between Hisuian Avalugg and this thing is like an Olympian and a drunk guy watching the Olympics and saying "Hold my beer"
Reworking Salt Cure so it's more balanced: As we all know, Garganacl and its signature move, Salt Cure, have had the metagame in a chokehold for a while now, to the point some even want it banned. I'm here to offer a much superior solution that will finally balance the funny rock. First, we're going to turn it into a special move. This will nerf the move a little, as Garganacl's SpA is way lower than its Atk. Salt Cure's secondary effect has a 100% chance to work, which has lead to some Pokemon running Covert Cloak just to overcome those odds. To fix this, we're giving its secondary effect a 30% chance to activate instead. In compensation to the lowered odds, the move will now have 80 BP. Next, we'll focus on the secondary effect itself. Dealing 12 or 25% every turn is excessive, so we're nerfing the damage to 6% every turn. To compensate, the status will stay even after switching out and it will lower the afflicted Pokemon's Atk by 50%. We're changing the move's type from Rock to Water so Garganacl doesn't benefit from STAB anymore. This change may seem thematically incoherent, but it's okay because Garganacl always runs Tera Water and also ocean water is salty I guess. Finally, to stop Garganacl's overcentralizing, we're giving the move to more Pokemon. Bulky water types like Toxapex or Quagsire will be able to use Sca- I mean, Salt Cure as well. The meta is fixed, you're welcome.
I see no problem with this move whatsoever. It does not need to be changed. Let the rock type have its reign. (ngl at the end I noticed that this was supposed to be sarcastic overkill)
Touching on the intro and the Rock type, it’s worth mentioning the one and only generation where Rock was actually good to have in general: Generation 1. Fighting barely exists as a type and actively sucks due to the strength of Psychics, and it’s the only Normal resist in the video game. It sucks that it’s still very one-note due to the lack of physical/special split, but Omastar still sees niche OU usage as a Rock that can also obliterate Rhydon. Meanwhile the one good Rock in living memory that isn’t like every other one is like. Nihilego. But only as a Meteor Beam enjoyer. A kingdom for good specially offensive rocks
Ice was pretty good (or at least less of a liability) for similar reasons. EQ weakness is bad when Tauros and most lax sets are running it, but no fighting types, no fire types, and Rock type moves basically just being Rock Slide (which Rhydon is largely the only user of) means they're not dying nearly as quickly, and it getting STAB on the moves with the nastiest status in the series' history, as well as being IMMUNE to said status is a pretty big plus.
What it needs to be a great defensive rock type: Great movepool A broken ability One of the best offensive move Good bulk This isinteresting, but also sad
Garg is a defensive Rock without any of the typical flaws, like low Sp. Def, status vulnerability, no reliable recovery, and more bad defensive matchups than good defensive matchups.
I like that theres finally a good pure rock type, but i feel like garganacl just got too much. It has a busted ability, busted move, and amazing stat spread. Kind of seems like a gen 7 toxapex situation.
Garg is annoying to play against, but I'll admit that I like seeing it in action. It's probably the only bulky Rock type that has seen so much success.
Garganacl holds a special place in my heart for absolutely carrying me through every titan fight. However, I think that there was a missed opportunity for it to be called "Naclord" with the C pronounced as an S.
Leave it to this pile of salt to likely leave some people very salty. Funny timing of this presentation: I got a shiny Nacli yesterday, and evolved her up into this thing! Love this mon, it’s silly and cool, and even if dumb its signature move brings something unique to the table!
Love how Rock and Ice basically just suffer from the exact same issue. Gamefreak designs a glass cannon type, then keeps giving it to the slowest and bulkiest mons in the game.
Garganacl is one of my favorite mons in SV. Bulky, Offensive with Body Press, Recover, Salt Cure, and Purifying Salt giving it one more resistance. This dude is powercreep for all rock types.
I know a lot of the comments are joking about how it took Gamefreak throwing everything at the wall and then some to make a good defensive rock type. But honestly? Given that the things Gargnacl got where honestly pretty standard for Gen 9 pokemon designs, I'm glad that Gamefreak decided to leverage the absurd power creep of Gen 9 to finally give us a good defensive rock type. It would have been so easy to give all the traits that make Gargnacl viable to a type that was already good defensively. But making it a rock type instead helps it stand out more and keep it in check.
One of my favorite teams just had a power band gargancl that dealt some crazy damage. Then I just used iron defense and I was basically unkillable. It was just fun to have this rocky lad, which I rarely ever terrastalized, demolish teams for a bit
I guess the Rock-type Pokemon are built around being hard to break, while the Rock Type is themed around overcoming that. It's the same reason Psychic's so good.
3:48 I️ was horribly bored at work the other day and came up with the idea to use Garg as a niche counter for Calyrex Shadow. I️ was so bored that I️ almost asked my friend to text her bf about it since he apparently made a few teams for Wolfie (what an achievement, my guy)
If there was a Rock type Body Press I think Stone Shell would be a good name. Shore Up is basically the "sand team version" of Recover so I don't know if Gamefreak would make that.
What gets me is Regirock is as good or better than Garganacl in every stat, but Garganacl’s ability, recovery, and salt cure make all the difference in completely outclassing Regirock. Seriously.
Grass, Ground, and Fighting type special attackers are great against Garganacl you should try it. For items you can use Covert Cloak to ignore Salt Cure, Taunt to stop Recover and Protect. Ghost types with Curse/Pain Split is great against Garganacl as well especially since they're immune to Body Press.
Garganacl polarizes (lol) Rock type’s best quality: chip damage. Salt Cure is another form of damage over time to add to the pile, alongside Stealth Rock, Sandstorm, and Rock Slide. I would argue that rock is the most centralizing type in Pokémon, in singles a Pokémon could be totally unusable because of a stealth rocks weakness. And yeah, there’s heavy duty boots but that’s giving up a whole item slot to counter it, and can be knocked off. And in doubles for many years rockslide was one of the most common moves.
Freaking salt MF with a busted signature move _and_ an overtuned signature ability being given access to recovery while the old guard of defensive Rock types are left without it really, dare I say, rubs salt in the wound. Imagine how good the likes of Regirock, Rhyperior, Aggron, maybe not Golem, would be with a recovery move. Carbink would be a good mon with recovery, let alone Diancie. But nah, you know who _really_ needed Recover? Obviously Chien-Pao and Gholdengo...

Gotta say, rly like Garganacl for its variety of uses and unique status as a Rock type. Huge fan of its design! Rly shows that all a Rock type needs is a useful defensive ability- see Sturdy, Solid Rock, and Purifying Salts lol!
Garganacl is one reason I actually really like the new Pokemon design philosophy. Yes, the powercreep is insane and some mons are REALLY poorly designed, but it really feels like there's an effort to make every Pokemon unique, either with a signature ability or signature move, or in this case both. I feel like there's an alternate reality not far from here where Garganacl just has sturdy and no signature move, and that would just be sad. Even mons who did not catch on like Klawf, or Toadscruel are still much more interesting than other weak dex filler we have gotten in the past, and may actually have a shot at forming niches in future formats due to their uniqueness. It's kinda a weird time to be a comp fan, because the game feels the most unbalanced its ever been, but also feels the most experimental. For that reason, I feel like I'm going to look back at Gen 9 with a weird backhanded fondness.
