  • It's been too long since I've watched an Asterism tune, so I figured I'd ease myself back in with something I'm familiar with. I really enjoy watching them play live!

When you’re good enough to rearrange YYZ in order to make it more difficult and fun to play!🤯💪🏻🤘🏻

They are 16 year old "kids" in this and already able to give this legendary song their own touch. Absolutely impressive.
Btw, Miyu, the bassist, recently did a solo cover of this on his Instagram and he absolutely killed it.

I think if anyone would be more nervous, that it would be the drummer. Trying to do justice to Neal Peart could be daunting. Anyway, Asterism did a good pretty job with it.
According to RUSH fandom wiki, the opening time signature is 10/8 and not 5/4 because the 8th note is receiving the beat, not the quarter note. (not a musician, just sharing what I found).

Thanks for that time signature correction! Mathematically, 10/8 = 5/4 :) But I get that it's not that easy. One of my favorite guitar pieces (La Hora Espanola) has some parts in 3.5/4. I asked a musician friend if 7/8 wouldn't work and he said he probably would have written it as 7/8 even though 3.5/5 is technically probably a little more accurate. I'll leave that kind of stuff up to the experts!

Love YYZ, but my favorite Asterism cover is definitely SRV's _Scuttle Buttin'._ Not sure if you're a Stevie Ray Vaughan fan, but if you know the song, you will definitely recognize that Asterism again start fairly true to the original, but soon start deviating. Haruka's first solo is a variation on Stevie's, but her second one is completely her own, and I freaking love it! I think SRV would have loved it too, but I am not sure he would have been able to actually play it 🙂. We also get a nice bass solo, but I think the drum solo is a bit overindulgent and anticlimactic:

Thanks for the link - I'll take a look! I was a big SRV fan long before I moved to TX; but now his music is like one of the 4 good groups for me. :)

heads up -- YT search deficiency strikes again .... hopefully it'll show up by tomorrow (it happens from time to time) ; good thing i'm subbed.
Miyu busted out the 4-string for this one, which means he's obligated by law to use his whammy ... which he did on the improv section in the middle (don't know if you noticed it or not -- basses with whammys is so rare that it's not even something that's in most people's wheelhouse to notice).
The channel you pulled this from has the most extensive live catalog of Asterism (i believe they're friends with the band) -- where you can find a pretty mean rendition of _Scuttle Buttin_ , by the way ; though there are a handful of other very small channels that have a small smattering of live vids (quality varies).
if you find a live version of their song _Blaze_ , you get to see Miyu make prolific use of his sweep-picking technique (with his thumb, of course)
for the very first bit of live footage, search "music revolution hal-ca rising moon" (YT has a tendency to not like links in the comments). they were 12, 13, 15 at the time ; battle-of-the-bands sort of thing that Yamaha puts on every year ; the song they play, _Rising Moon_ , was one of the very first songs written by Hal-ca , the vid/sound quality is pretty good , and you can already see she's perfected her "guitar face". they made a OMV for it a few years later (good quality production ; but the vid isn't really anything special).
a little search through your channel history says you've done Dawn , Church , and Gunfire. as for other recommendations .... it's almost impossible to go wrong with anything (though, people tend to prefer the instrumental stuff ... and, btw, just for reference, the latest 3 vids on their official channel all have vocals, being the latest album .... i personally like them, but it's definitely a departure from their normal stuff).

I'll give some links a try. Let's see if TH-cam let's us keep them 🙂
This is their performance at the finale of the 9th Yamaha Music Revolution on November 1st, 2015, where they won both one of the three Excellence Awards, as well as the Audience Award. It is the earliest live recording of Rising Moon that I am aware of:

But I personally prefer this show from November 18th, where they perform at a smaller club (the whole gig is great, but this link is Rising Moon only):

I noticed the 4 string bass, but I didn't notice the whammy. In fact you're right - I've never even heard of a bass having one. I'll need to go back and look for that! I'll check out some more of the vids from that channel for sure. You're not the first person to mention the SRV track. So much I need to watch!

@@DadDaughtersandDrinks off the top of my head, Billy Sheehan (who Miyu cites as one of his primary influences) is the only other bass whammy i can think of .... idk, maybe Les Claypool _might_ have one lying around???
so, i guess just for note: the 7-str is his standard , the 4-str means he intends to use the whammy , and the 5-str means he intends to show off his sweep-picking (with thumb, of course ... i don't think he owns a pick 😅😉)

Good notes to have for the number of strings! I'm barely old enough to remember when Billy Sheehan was just a local musician (playing for Talas in Buffalo). I'm not old enough to have gone to the shows but I have a brother 10 years older who was a big fan at the time. Makes sense he might have a whammy! I would be a tiny bit surprised if Claypool had one as his style is a lot less flashy (while still being very full with lots of tapping, etc... so I wouldn't be TOO surprised :-) ). Saw Primus a couple of years ago with VIP seating and just had my mind melted!
