  • Wait until you see and taste these cannoli from Piana degli Albanesi in Province of Palermo. Plus learn more about one of the largest Albanian communities in Italy. They came here during the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans more that 500 years ago. In Sicily they have kept their own language, culture and traditions.

      yes you are right, for that reason we do respect Italy, but you do not realize how much arbereshe culture has influenced Italy.. in many many ways , you can not even begin to imagine, most of Italian culture is based on Arbereshe influence, especially the south..also most of Garibaldi soldiers fighting for unification in 1860s were Arbereshe , we have influenced Italy in many ways .. the good the bad and the ugly... you work it out , what I mean.!..( hint: Kanun and feuds, which gave birth to the so called Italian mafia.etc..

      Italian people are quite tolerable, but Arbereshe are not in Italy thanks to the Italians. The arbereshe started arriving in southern Italy during the 14th and 15th century.Italy as a repuplic did not even exist at that time. (Garibaldi 1865) If anything the arbereshe owe their thanks to the Spanish ( kingdom of Aragon) who owned southern Italy (kingdom of the two Sicilies) It was king Ferdinand and king Alfonso of Naples who gave land to the Arbereshe to settle in southern Italy and Sicily. the reason for this was the good relationship George Kastrioti (Scanderbeg) had with the king of Naples. this friendship was not for nothing as the king of Naples had intrests in the balkans and Scanderbeg had previosly and on many ocassions sent armies to help the king against his enemies

Being home bound it means a great deal to experience travel through you. Those Cannoli look amazing! I love sheep's milk cheeses (Especially Pecorino Romano) but have never had Sheep's milk ricotta. It must be fantastic! I do make my own ricotta at home but from cow's milk. You have made me jealous so I will have to make some of my own Cannoli now!!! Thank you again Alfred and Eszter. Not these people, these people came to Italy from Greece, Peloponnese or Epirus ( Arvenites) Italy as a republic did not exist at that time, the king of Naples which was under the Spanish rule. ( Aragon kingdom) asked Scanderbeg for help against certain enemies duke etc..Scanderbeg send his best soldiers, when these soldiers defeated the enemy they were rewarded with land in Calabria, and Sicily ( the two Sicilys as it was known) there have been many waves of Albanian refugees in Italy, some came a mercenaries some as refugees, some with the Venetians.. Scanderbeg himself was in Italy on two occasions and always slept in Arbereshe safe houses , did not trust anyone else.!

      Endritberisha;
      The invasion of the Balkans by the Ottoman Turks in the 15th century forced many Arbëreshë to emigrate from Albania and Epirus to the southern Italy. There were several waves of migrations. In 1448, the King of Naples Alfonso V of Aragon appealed to Skanderbeg to help suppress a revolt at Naples. Skanderbeg sent a force under the leadership of Demetrio Reres, and his two sons. Following a request by the Albanian soldiers, King Alfonso granted them land and they were settled in twelve villages in the mountainous area called Catanzaro in 1448. A year later the sons of Demetrio, George and Basil along with other Albanians were settled in four villages in Sicily.
      In 1459, the son of Alfonso, king Ferdinand I of Naples again requested the help of Skanderbeg. This time, the legendary leader himself came to Italy with his troops led by one of his generals, Luca Baffa, to end a French-supported insurrection. Skanderbeg was appointed as the leader of the combined Neapolitan-Albanian army and, after winning two decisive battles, the Albanian soldiers effectively defended Naples. This time they were rewarded with land east of Taranto in Apulia, populating 15 other villages.
      After the death of Skanderbeg in 1468, the organized Albanian resistance against the Ottomans came to an end. Like much of the Balkans, Albania became subject to the invading Turks. Many of its people under the rule of Luca Baffa and Marco Becci fled to the neighboring countries and settled in a few villages in Calabria. From the time of Skanderbeg's death until 1480 there were constant migrations of Albanians to the Italian coast. Throughout the 16th century, these migrations continued and other Albanian villages were formed on Italian soil.[18] The new immigrants often took up work as mercenaries hired by Italian armies.
      Another wave of emigration, between 1500 and 1534, relates to Arbëreshë from central Greece. Employed as mercenaries by Venice, they had to evacuate the colonies of the Peloponnese with the assistance of the troops of Charles V, as the Turks had invaded that region. Charles V established these troops in southern Italy to reinforce defenses against the threat of Turkish invasion. Established in isolated villages (which enabled them to maintain their culture until the 20th century), Arbëreshë were, traditionally, soldiers for the Kingdom of Naples and the Republic of Venice, from the Wars of Religion to the Napoleonic invasion.

      what they mean is. that they spoke a mixture of Greek and Albanian, as these people mostly came from Greece, Arvenites) who had migrated from Albania and initially settled in Epirus or PELOPPONESE, when the pelopppones came under turkish occupation they migrated to Italy.. they did not speak today's standard Albania, but each their own dialect.. also hence the name Piana dei Greci, which was later changed to piana degli Albanesi..but not by Mussolini.. the name change happened in the 1980s..ta gji nan.. ;-)

      @@jeandellagjianni3548 They did not speak a mixture of greek and Albanian. They spoke Albanian Tosk dialect as all the Arvanites in Morea (modern day Peloponnesus). Since their religion was the Eastern Orthodox one and since they were once part of the Byzantine empire their liturgy and in the daily vocabulary you would find random greek words. Not to mention the fact that the other part of their descendants (Arvanitas) left in Morea (Peloponnesus) created the modern Greece in 1821.
      Ps: since they came from Morea (Peloponnesus) the locals kept calling them Piana dei Greci until they decided to be called piana degli Albanesi.
