I was at someone’s garden wedding. They had hired a crew with blowtorches to blacken the wood fence a few years before the wedding took place. The charred surface was brushed with oil. The Japanese call this process yakisugi, and apparently it is a time tested way to preserve timber exposed to the elements.
YES ! It chars the surface and it can preserve the wood naturally for 100 years or more. Unless it is severely charred though it can still show a busy wood grain, which would detract from the plant scaping too.
I have been painting my fences black for about 10 years now, I was really nervous the first time, but love them now. I also used black masonry paint on the fence posts so they blend in

Moved house during lockdown and just completed painting the fencing, that borders on all sides around our new garden, in black (Ronseal 'Blackbird'). It has taken a lot of tins as the existing fencing is lap panelled, rough and very parched, but it now looks absolutely stunning. The only issue is the messy wild doves with their own very contrasting ideas on how the fences should be coloured. Still the new trees and climbers will look fantastic against the fences come the summer.
I'm glad that you're promoting dark, almost black, paint for exterior use. I think it's an easy way to sophisticate the look of any structure (fence, garage, shed, house, trellis). In fact, "the worse the architecture, the darker the paint" almost always works! Darker paint on Modernist houses or Craftsman are flattering, as both styles were meant to blend into their settings. Even the Victorian houses often used up deep rich organic colors to add a complex look that highlighted the body of the house, the window frame, and window sash. Deep olive, umber, Sienna reds were common. Lighter colors and pastels are usually unsuccessful and don't allow the house to set gently into it's environment.
Ours have been black these last 12 months and we’ve never regretted it. It makes everything look fab-u-Lous! I’ve also only got black, terracotta and silver metal pots. There’s also weathered wood raised bed and some stone. Trés chic!

I personally rather like how it has made the posts a feature. It gives a rather architectural, modern feel. And with more concrete in the garden it will tie right in indeed.

Hi thanks for the feedback and I did consider trying to cover the fence posts. In my garden though I have other concrete elements so the overall effect works well.
Wow! That looks amazing! Your garden just pops and it’s so beautiful 🤩. I live in AZ and the fences are concrete blocks with excessive sun exposure and the green plants don’t do so well. I was wondering would you recommend painting the masonry black? And how would that play behind water drought plants and cacti?
I would imagine if you painted the concrete block black they would get hotter and keep the heat which might not be great for the plants. I guess each situation is different so hard to comment. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching. This has been a common response and there were a few reasons why I didn't and haven't. 1. I was not sure that I would like the effect and so in my mind worse case I could change the fence panels, not ideal but this could be done. 2. I have other concrete elements in the garden and when the garden is viewed as a whole the concrete posts pull in the other concrete in the garden making it have a consistant feel. 3. If I had a fence, I'd totally do that! I love the split rail fences in black too, against the green grass, just wow! I talked my husband into using black mulch in our front garden, he was skeptical but, sold when we put it down. Made everything pop! Beautiful job on the fence and such a lovely yard.
Thanks for the input and thanks for watching. A few people have mentioned black mulch I will look to see if we can get any here in the UK. Thanks for watching
I hear you Mark! I loved Andy Sturgeon's show too. My next door neighbours have replaced half their fence panels so we've got half orange, half grey with yellow trellis 😑. Painting it black is my summer job. Congratulations on an amazing garden, you can tell its a real labour of love 👏👏👏
Thank you for the kind words. Yes the Andy Sturgeon garden was fabulous I agree. It sounds like a big project you have ahead but it will be worth the effort :)
My husband saved our piecemeal fence, then painted it a dark grey to hide the imperfections and repairs, and match the deck/pergola on our mid-century home. I hated the look of this fence before but now I love it. It is the nicest colored fence in the neighborhood and looks so sharp. We get compliments all the time. I imagine black would have a similar effect for all the reasons you listed. The garden and house pop.
Stunning. Black is an often under rated colour for decorating etc. but as you’ve proven, it’s quite beautiful and becoming more and more popular. Well done, ❤️ it, And you’re exquisite garden. 🤗
I ABSOLUTELY love your painted fence for the reasons you stated. I used to own a custom picture framing store and discovered the beauty of black backgrounds for ANY artwork. It is restful to the eye, allowing the art, or in this case the plantings, to shout out their own colors. So when I installed my privacy fence and many other garden structures I used a semi-transparent waterproofing stain tinted black walnut which starts out black and fades to a very dark brown with grain showing, which mimics the color of tree trunks when they're wet. I prefer the natural look rather than a "hardscaped" look.
Never saw a black fence before this I have to say it looks Fantastic!! Thank you for the idea👍 now I'm off to Home Depot to buy some Black paint for my fence😊
So pleased to watch this , the dark background really brings out the colours of the plants ! It gives a completely new dimension to your gorgeous garden . Especially superb on a sun drenched area where looking at a lighter coloured fence would be blinding to the eyes . Terrific 🖐🏼❤️
Thanks so much for the compliment. I do agree with you I am not a big lover of painting the concrete posts. If I wanted to conceal them I think I would clad them in timber then paint that.
I’m putting in a brand new fence and painting it dark charcoal. Plant material really pops against the dark color. Your garden is absolutely awesome!!! The black fence was a great decision!
I meant to say I love the “black” not the “back”. 🙄 We have not had 1” of rain in a 24 hour period since April, 2020. We have to water a lot and work hard to have anything green.
I just bought a new home that is black with black door and white stucco. The homes next to mine were another brick but they painted same as mine. Not too happy that 4 by me now look like mine but that shows how great black looks. . After watching this Im going to paint my fence. I guess the neighbors will all do the same...lol Next I hope to make my yard look as good as this...
Sounds like you are a trend setter in your area! I hope the fence makes the garden stand out too. Add in some green plants and it will look great. Thanks for watching 😊
I've painted my backyard fence black as well and I simply love it. It does give it a contemporary feel. I bought a 17 litre bucket of latex driveway sealer for like $25 and used that to paint the fence ... and I still have over half of it left. Yes, driveway sealer works just fine and gives the wood a nice texture and additional protection.
1. I was not sure that I would like the effect and so in my mind worse case I could change the fence panels, not ideal but this could be done.
2. I have other concrete elements in the garden and when the garden is viewed as a whole the concrete posts pull in the other concrete in the garden giving it a consistant feel.

I like it. I would have painted the fence posts too because my eye tends to go to them being a different colour than the black. But perhaps that might be too much black. Either way, well done!
Hi thanks for the feedback and I did consider trying to cover the fence posts. In my garden though I have other concrete elements so the overall effect works well.
I'm sold, this black background looks awesome.
Great glad you like it
Would love to see what ur house looks like with black fence.
Its just a red brick house and it works well with the black fence. Thanks for watching.
You have a very beautiful yard. That was a great idea. The fence looked great. I enjoyed this video. Take care
Thank you very much!
Wow! The black looks gorgeous behind the beautiful foliage.
Thank you we love it too :)
Hi Mark, a black backdrop really makes foliage pop, but I'd paint your posts too, so it looks seamless.
3. I have seen other concrete posts painted and I am not sure I like the effect. Plus once painted you can never go back to the natural effect. 4. If I painted the posts I would need to paint the concrete gravel boards too and I did not want to create a hugh job! Finally if iIwas going to change the colour of the posts I think i would clad them with timber to discuise them and paint these black. Hope this helps and sorry for the long reply :)
I always make sure to mulch with compost. Nice black rich pre-soil. It resolves a multitude of issues; looks amazing!
yes me too. Thanks for watching :)
Looks great 👍 Pan out the camera more to see the whole view would be wonderful 😇
Ok next time
If I had a fence, I'd totally do that!
Black looks amazing!
Thanks
My husband saved our piecemeal fence, then painted it a dark grey to hide the imperfections and repairs, and match the deck/pergola on our mid-century home. I hated the look of this fence before but now I love it. It is the nicest colored fence in the neighborhood and looks so sharp. We get compliments all the time. I imagine black would have a similar effect for all the reasons you listed. The garden and house pop.
Sound like your husban has a good eye for detail too. It sounds gorgeous, thanks for watching and the comments.
I love it . Been debating to paint my fence black , now I am going to paint it . Thanks for sharing
Glad its helped :)
Stunning. Black is an often under rated colour for decorating etc. but as you’ve proven, it’s quite beautiful and becoming more and more popular. Well done, ❤️ it, And you’re exquisite garden. 🤗
Thanks so much for the feedback and thanks for watching :)
Thanks for the input and pleased you liked the effect :)
This is a fabulous solution! It looks beautiful
Thank you! 😊
Never saw a black fence before this I have to say it looks Fantastic!! Thank you for the idea👍 now I'm off to Home Depot to buy some Black paint for my fence😊
So pleased I have inspired you good luck with the project :)
So pleased to watch this , the dark background really brings out the colours of the plants ! It gives a completely new dimension to your gorgeous garden . Especially superb on a sun drenched area where looking at a lighter coloured fence would be blinding to the eyes . Terrific 🖐🏼❤️
Thanks so much 😊 pleased you liked it and the finished effect.
I want to do ours black but alittle worried that it will seep through to the neighbours, have you any advise, as its an older fence
Your gardens are lovely. The black fence is a stunning background also. In catering, we used black bowls for serving fruits and vegetables.
Thanks for the kind words and yes after years of white crockery my next purchase will definately be a darker colour.
Definitely love the dancing shadows!
yes thats one of the best parts!
Ahhhh your garden is gorgeous , great decision on the black fence 👍🖤🖤🖤
Thanks so much :)
Wow! Gorgeous garden and the black fence looks amazing. I like the cement posts left natural.
Thanks so much for the compliment. I do agree with you I am not a big lover of painting the concrete posts. If I wanted to conceal them I think I would clad them in timber then paint that.
Beautiful garden!! Black is classic, like the little black dress, good choice.
Thank you so pleased you like it :)
Yes absolutely I painted my fence black and I love it......wish I had done it sooner.
Yes me too I deliberated about it for ages but it was one benefit of lockdown... i had the time to finally do it :)
Very Beautiful garden and fence
Thank you
I’m putting in a brand new fence and painting it dark charcoal. Plant material really pops against the dark color. Your garden is absolutely awesome!!! The black fence was a great decision!
Thanks for the lovely comment. The dark fence really does lift the planting and make them pop I do agree 😊
Most beautiful yard and fence I've ever seen. 👀 Spectacular! 🎆
Thank you very much!
Thank God someone else thinks this way! Stunning
Thanks Sharon glad you like it :)
Woah! That looks so much better! I'm tucking this away for my future fence build...🖤🖤🖤
Thanks for the positive comment June and glad you liked it. Good luck with the project 😊
I love the back!! Your garden is beautiful! I don’t think I could ever grow a garden like that in west Texas! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much, Not too familiar with the climate there but no I think some of the plants would struggle :) thanks for watching.
I meant to say I love the “black” not the “back”. 🙄 We have not had 1” of rain in a 24 hour period since April, 2020. We have to water a lot and work hard to have anything green.
I painted mine black last summer and I love it 🧡
great me too :)
Looks outstandingly good ! Never , ever, ever, would I have thought of this ! It’s fabulous !!! TFS 🍀
You are so welcome, really pleased you liked it :)
Absolutly BRILLIANT. LOVE IT.
Thank you
Your landscaping is beautiful.....💕
Thank you so much 😊
I just bought a new home that is black with black door and white stucco.
Beautiful yard!
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the input never thought of using driveway sealer. Thanks for watching
I would never have thought of it, but it looks very good.
Thanks
Amazing Mark. Just wouldn’t have believed how good it looks. By the way, you have a beautiful garden!
Thanks so much John glad you enjoyed it :)
