    Thanks for the Video! I wanted to be super-confident before I start staining my wood fence black. We are going to paint the front door black and the chain link fence which is on the other side of the house and surrounds the rest of the back yard. One day I would like raised beds painted black and I’m really influenced by YT Garden Answers and all of Laura’s fencing and raised beds. Although our house is sort of a cream color right I think it will be ok. Our house is set back from the road a few hundred yards so the contrast might be nice. I love the concert fence posts!!!

      Thanks for watching and hopefully it’s helped with your decision. Sounds like you have some big projects on. I do think sometimes a contrast works well I have some raised beds that I have just let weather naturally and they are now a lovely dark silvery grey colour. Black is a great colour and works really well with green plants. 😊

    Ended up using Ronseal Tudor Black also because of your video, went with the 5 year plus and not the one coat, as i was told the one coat would have needed a sealer on top. I had some moss issues on some of the fence and on some of the concrete posts, so i sprayed first with a patio cleaner and left for a few days before staining. The staining went on really nicely, except for the one panel i had done in dark oak, that was a pain in the ass to stain, needed 3 coats. I did end up deciding to paint the concrete posts and after much researching and googling, i ended up going with Rustins Quick Dry Masonry paint in matt white, it's for interior and exterior. Absolute dream to apply and am in love with the contrast of the matt white concrete posts with the Tudor Black fencing. The masonry paint has really good reviews, so fingers crossed it holds up in our British weather. But just wanted to say thank you, as Tudor Black was not originally a colour i would have chosen.

      Thanks for the feedback and so pleased the video has helped. Sounds like you have done an excellent job! Good feedback on the masonry paint.
      I am glad you like the Tudor black, it was a chance pick for me but I too love it.
      Enjoy your new fence 👍🏻

      @@sherijoy6372 my advice would be to practice on a part that is either not seen or can be hidden if it goes wrong. Alternatively do some tests on some pieces of wood to practice and help you feel confident. We all have to start somewhere, good luck 😊

    very informative video! The thing I always wonder about though is if you are only staining your side of the fence, how/where do you stop the stain at the top? Specially if you are staining posts as well, how do you go about it?
    (the sides that face the street usually should be kept natural wood because of architectural control and such, and of course the neighbours can do whatever they want colour wise on their of the fence)

    • @SpencerCollection
      @SpencerCollection  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is a great point and one that got raised in my other video so I am currently thinking how to best show this as a third video. The problem is every situation is different and what you have to be careful of is that the stain/paint does not go through to the neighbours side of the fence.
      In answer to one of your questions I think that if the fence is yours then you are ok to paint the top. I do though agree personally i would leave the fence posts alone. You rightly point out where do you stop?

    Thanks for the help - I am now going to paint or stain the fence which surrounds and dominates my small grey slabbed garden black. There are lots of videos on how to do the actual painting, I'm not sure which is easiest to apply it with - a brush or a sprayer?

    • @SpencerCollection
      @SpencerCollection  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would go brush every time as you can control where it goes easier. Spraying can go all over and you have another job masking up etc. hope that helps and thanks for watching 😊

    Really like the look. Quick question though. Did the black stain go through the gaps to the other side of the fence? Wondering if I’ll end up ruining my neighbours fence by leaving drips of black stain on their side.

    • @SpencerCollection
      @SpencerCollection  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching and in answer to your question it all depends on the quality and style of fence. My fence has vertical slats so any runs ran down my side of the fence and not through it. If it is a poorer quality fence where the slats run horizontally then there is a danger the stain can run on the other side. I hope this helps 😊

    I just closed on a home that is white stucco with black wood. I dislike the fence with the home. I want to either paint or stain the fence but will have to make sure the blacks match. I am very concerned about it getting on the neighbors fence. Would black paint look just as good as the stain. I might be wrong but it seems the paint would be less likely to transfer. I really want to do the sides that face the street and the alley. Your thoughts?????

    • @SpencerCollection
      @SpencerCollection  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a really difficult question to answer without seeing the fence. You do though have to be careful that stain does not transfer to the other side. Even paint could run depending how the cladding boards are fitted. Personally I would stain any outdoor fence. If you are painting it would need primer and undercoat first so the paint would adhere.
      I hope this helps. Thanks for watching 😊

    I'm thinking of staining my fence that same stain color. Would spraying it work as well as the brush??

    • @SpencerCollection
      @SpencerCollection  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Personally I always prefer to use a brush. I feel you have more control with a brush. When spraying anything I always worry about overspray and all the need to mask off what you don’t want spraying. All the cleaning down of equipment after just feels like too much hassle for me. It is though personal taste. Just be aware to ensure the colour does not run to your neighbours side of the fence. I hope this helps and thanks for watching 😊

    • @SpencerCollection
      @SpencerCollection  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think I would stain them black too. I don’t see a problem with it at all. I guess what else could you do? If you leave them natural or stain a different colour then I think you would be drawn to them too much and they would stand out. Hope this helps 😊

    Hello, I have just come across your video. I moved into a new house last year and already painted the fence from turquoise to black, it looked better but the colour is starting to fade / is patchy in some areas. I have just purchased a new gate which needs painted and I had read somewhere about stain rather than paint. If I stain the gate, I would like to redo the fence. Do you think it's possible to stain on top of the previously painted fences? Many thanks, Gillian

    • @SpencerCollection
      @SpencerCollection  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gillian, firstly thanks for watching. It’s a difficult question to answer really and it all depends on what the previous owners used. If it covered last time then I would try the same again. After time stain and paint do fade so you do need to keep re applying. With regards to the gate. Personally I would look to stain it. I am no professional decorator but my reasoning would be that you could alway paint over it if it does not look right or work. However you can’t easily go the other way. Also if the gate looks slightly different than the fence, personally this would not cause me any issues. So long as the colours look good together a slight contrast in finishes is not the end of the world! I hope this helps 😊

    Hi there! Did you prep the fence at all before staining (i.e. sand the fence or use a primer?)

    • @SpencerCollection
      @SpencerCollection  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, no I did no preparation, the fence was a good quality one and quite new so it took the stain well. I only gave it one coat. I have noticed the older fences did not absorb the stain as well. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
