Should I remove Tomato Leaves?
Tomato Care Tips: Pruning and Leaf Removal for Bountiful Harvest Greenhouse Gardening
Join us in the greenhouse for a crucial tomato maintenance session! In this informative video, we guide you through the process of pruning tomato plants to ensure a prolific harvest. It's August here in the UK, a bit late for this task, but we're still optimising our tomato plants for the best results. Our towering 9-foot tall tomato plants (2.7 meters for European viewers) need some attention.
Learn why it's essential to trim the tops of tomato plants to redirect their energy towards fruit production instead of excessive growth. We make some bold decisions, even cutting off trusses to give other parts of the plant a better chance at ripening in our climate before autumn arrives.
Stay tuned as we demonstrate the art of removing lower leaves from the tomato plants. This serves a dual purpose: improving sunlight exposure to developing tomatoes and enhancing air circulation to prevent tomato blight. Witness the transformation as we delicately trim leaves, allowing the vibrant green vines to shine.
We'll walk you through the process step by step, all while sharing insights into our gardening philosophy. Discover when to remove side shoots and why some foliage is left intact. As the first tomatoes of the season start to ripen, we take a moment to relish the rewards of our efforts.

The timing for cutting back grasses in the garden depends on the type of grass you have and your location. In general, it is best to cut back ornamental grasses in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. This will ensure that the grasses are at their most dormant and will allow for new growth to emerge unimpeded. In this video, we'll show you how to cut back the grass pennisetum ...

Gabriel Ash Greenhouse Garden Video Diary 2
I have just done mine and it looks amazing 🤩
So pleased you like it ☺️
Looks gorgeous. Did you stain the neighbors side?
Thank you ☺️ No because the boards were running vertically there was no stain ingress on the neighbours side.
Name of greenhouse and where to buy?
It’s a Gabriel Ash upright Coldframe available from their website I think. Hope that helps 😊
Thank you for your very inspiring video! I’m now getting my fence panels painted black! Your garden is stunning ❤️
Thank you for your kind feedback, so glad the video helped 😊💚
May I know if the stain will sip through to the other side of the fence which my neighbor owns?
Thanks for watching and in answer to your question it all depends on the quality and style of fence. My fence has vertical slats so any runs ran down my side of the fence and not through it. If it is a poorer quality fence where the slats run horizontally then there is a danger the stain can run on the other side. I hope this helps 😊
I'm thinking of staining my fence that same stain color. Would spraying it work as well as the brush??
Personally I always prefer to use a brush. I feel you have more control with a brush. When spraying anything I always worry about overspray and all the need to mask off what you don’t want spraying. All the cleaning down of equipment after just feels like too much hassle for me. It is though personal taste. Just be aware to ensure the colour does not run to your neighbours side of the fence. I hope this helps and thanks for watching 😊
Thanks - couldn't make it so this gives me a feel for it 😊
It was like no other garden show you have ever been too. More like a rave 😊💚
Banging tune, absolutely random video
Glad you liked the tune at least 👍🏻 it was Tinie at a garden show in the uk and it was all very surreal
I’m putting in a brand new fence and painting it dark charcoal. Plant material really pops against the dark color. Your garden is absolutely awesome!!! The black fence was a great decision!
Thanks for the lovely comment. The dark fence really does lift the planting and make them pop I do agree 😊
Really like the look. Quick question though. Did the black stain go through the gaps to the other side of the fence? Wondering if I’ll end up ruining my neighbours fence by leaving drips of black stain on their side.

Very helpful. What do you do if you want to mount it directly onto tiles with screws into the tiles but the teresse isn't level? How do you then level it before screwing it to the tiles?
Thanks for watching. In answer to your question there are only two options. One is to re lay the paving level. Or you can pack the base to make it level with packers. It all depends how far out of level the paving is. A slight fall in level is not necessarily a bad thing. I hope this helps and good luck with the project.
Looks great Mark Thxs
Thank you ☺️
Thanks for the video I watched,I'm only a starter so all the advice you'd given me was fab Thank-you 😅
Thanks for your kind words and so pleased it’s helped 😊
Hey Mark, just found your channel. Great content! Just wanted to say I'd love to see more greenhouse and garden stuff from you, love your voice and calm videos! Cheers from Sweden.
Hi Chris, thanks so much for your kind feedback. I am looking to create more content soon and feedback like this really helps inspire me to create more. Thanks again Mark
At last, a good explanation of how they work. The Bayliss people assume we know all this!
Thanks so much for this feedback. It is interesting how some manufacturers assume we all have their product knowledge. I like to try to do explainer videos assuming no prior knowledge of the product in question. I am hoping to produce more content again soon!
U deserve more views and likes
Thanks Lili, I am planning more content for 2024 so hopefully that will help 🤷🏼♂️ thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Can I use Quikrete for the base?
I have never used Quikrete so I can not really advise on this. All I can say is that for this type of greenhouse the traditional concrete footing and brick plinth is the best solution. Hope this helps
I absolutely love the black fence, and your yard is beautiful! I have a week before my fence is stained. I initially wanted black and once I made the decision, I emailed my contractor to change it from black to charcoal grey solid stain to complement my house which is light grey and charcoal grey. Should my fence match my house color? I really do like black.
That’s a difficult one to answer having not see the house. My instinct is that if the charcoal grey is dark enough it will give the same effect. This will also help to match the house to the garden. Worse case it will be easier to stain the fence black over the grey rather than the other way round! I hope this helps.
Great vid and, for anyone who hasn’t had one, Sneeboer tools are superb quality and worth every penny
Unfortunally i cannot have that kind of plants in my garden. I live in zone 10 and plants like box, beech and the majority of connifers simply die from the extreme heat. In our climate we do not have much choice for winter interest plants. Anyway your garden is gourgeous.
Thanks for watching and yes I guess the ideas were more for a UK climate. I guess it’s a whole new problem for your climate conditions and must be very testing. Thanks for you kind words and good luck with your own garden 🪴
Ah the posts were concrete. I wondered why they weren't black as well. That makes a lot of sense.
Yes if they had been timber I think I would have stained them black too 👍🏻
I'm dying of garden envy. Now I want a black fence in a semi transparent stain.. I'm curious if it'd be even prettier with the posts black as well.
I personally like the contrast but it is all individual taste. I did do a follow up FAQ video explaining why I left them too which you might find useful. Thanks for watching 😊
Third video in a matter of weeks Mark, good to see 👍🏼
I know! Trying to be a bit more consistent let’s see if it continues 😂 Thanks for watching 😊
I have considered doing this too, but I figure that when it starts getting cold, I will harvest all the green tomatoes and let them ripen on the kitchen counter.
Yes that is an alternative and at the end of the season we do have a few green ones to ripen indoors. Cutting back the foliage does really help though from my experience. Thanks for watching 😊
Thanks for the helpful video!@@SpencerCollection
Awesome information! Thanks for that
Thank you so pleased you got something from it 😊
Hi Mark, could you do a video explaining how to "top" the tomato vine when it is time to stop it from growing further height and get it to concentratre on the existing fruit? I myself am growing my first ever tomato crop in my brand new greenhouse this summer. Thank you for the informative video!
Hi Kirsi thanks so much for watching and for your question. I have just finished filming this very subject and hope to have the video edited and uploaded next week. I am sure this one will help you. If you hit the bell on my channel it will let you know when the next video is uploaded. Thanks for watching 😊💚
Is this stain sold in the US?
Hi, thanks for watching. I list the type and make of stain in a follow up FAQ video so it might be worth watching. You could then go on the brand website and ask for stockist’s. Here in the UK it is available in DIY stores. Hope this helps 😊
Hi mark, good informative video. I'm wondering, can i fix the greenhouse straight into the concrete, skipping laying bricks entirely? Or is the concrete too unstable unless i put rebar in as well?
It really depends on the type of greenhouse. This model needed the brick plinth to be slightly higher than the base to create a drip cill effect. I have done another video on my channel called “Which Greenhouse is Best” this shows a different base construction for a different brand of greenhouse. Hope this helps 😊
@@SpencerCollection cool! I'll look for it now. Yeah the greenhouse i'm planning to buy says "base included" and its the aluminun base, so i'm not sure how much more foundation i need for it.. keep up the great videos 💪🏾
@@sharileenlimpin5534 thank you for the compliment it really helps me keep creating. The greenhouse company should provide you some base preparation details too.
I saw the trailer for this on Instagram but the movie’s even better. Good information Mark for anyone looking to try growing garlic.
Thanks Dan, I like the thought my Reel was the trailer 😊 Glad you liked the video and thanks for watching.
wish my garden was this cute and quiet... could really use a tall hedge like yours. is it a regular beech? just one row or how did you get it to be so dense?
Thank you for your kind comments 😊 the hedge is a regular beech and in this section I did plant it in double staggered rows. Although I have since planted more hedging in just a single row and this is thickening up well.
I'm still nervous about doing the fence in black. I have about 15 panels to do as my garden is wide, however it's shallow...i am worried that the black will make it look more shallow. I also will have a corner cabin to paint and a wooden arch...any suggestions please? I have wondered about Cuprinol Silver Copse which is a dark grey on the fence...but im still so on the fence (lol) that im not getting anything done...my garden is at starting point and bare...all the hard landscaping is done however.
I do understand your dilemma and the time spent thinking about it! Firstly it is all down to personal taste so it’s really hard to give advice on individual projects. however the following points might help with the decision. - if you are thinking of a dark grey as an alternative there will not be much between that and black as far as the effect is concerned! Personally I think black is better! - from my experience when I had the new timber fence it really stood out (too light)and as soon as I have stained it black I hardly ever notice it. - The garden if it is new might look a little stark at first until you get some plants in it. Green foliage against the black works really well. - many top garden designers use black as a background colour for a reason. If it’s good enough for them it should work in your garden. - I too stained about 15 panels in my own garden and still love it. - black is a timeless colour so it does not date like a grey or similar colour might. -if the panels are new and can easily be replaced you could test the effect by painting one first. If you don’t like it it is easier and less expensive to change one rather than 15! - with regards to the cabin and arch I think I would keep the same colour. It is tempting to use another colour as a contrast but personally I think limiting the colour palette makes the finish look more classy. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 😊
@@SpencerCollection Thank you so much for your insightful advice! I will get on with it next weekend! 😊
Sorry but that is not a handle being replaced?
Hi Steve, thanks for watching. I am a little confused with your comment? We did actually replace a handle in the video to show the process. If there is an error you have spotted I would love to hear what that is. Thanks for your valued feedback. 😊
Hello, I have just come across your video. I moved into a new house last year and already painted the fence from turquoise to black, it looked better but the colour is starting to fade / is patchy in some areas. I have just purchased a new gate which needs painted and I had read somewhere about stain rather than paint. If I stain the gate, I would like to redo the fence. Do you think it's possible to stain on top of the previously painted fences? Many thanks, Gillian
Hi Gillian, firstly thanks for watching. It’s a difficult question to answer really and it all depends on what the previous owners used. If it covered last time then I would try the same again. After time stain and paint do fade so you do need to keep re applying. With regards to the gate. Personally I would look to stain it. I am no professional decorator but my reasoning would be that you could alway paint over it if it does not look right or work. However you can’t easily go the other way. Also if the gate looks slightly different than the fence, personally this would not cause me any issues. So long as the colours look good together a slight contrast in finishes is not the end of the world! I hope this helps 😊
@@SpencerCollection Thank you for your kind reply.
Thank you for the follow up. Very good information. By the way you have a beautiful garden. (saw it in video part 1).
Thank you, I am glad this helped. Thank you for your kind words about my garden 🙏🏻💚
Great information. Thank you. I was looking for ideas. Happy gardening. Looks amazing.
So pleased it has helped 😊
my OCD would mean I would have to paint the posts black along with the actual fence in between the posts otherwise what's the point
Thanks for the feedback and I guess we are all different! I like the contrasting concrete posts personally but I can understand why for some they don’t work. I have done a follow up video answering this and a few other FAQ’s that explain why. Thanks for watching 😊
Fab!
Thank you ☺️
Oi, did you get a LOICENSE to paint that fence black, mate? Did ya pay yer Black Fence LOICENCING fee, mate?
I just built my first Greenhouse and am diving through TH-cam for good tips and tricks. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching and your lovely comments. I have a couple of new greenhouse videos I am hoping to get out in the next week or so which you might like too 😊 good luck with the new greenhouse 💚
If you'd had trellis toppers would you have stained them too? See any problems with that?
I think I would stain them black too. I don’t see a problem with it at all. I guess what else could you do? If you leave them natural or stain a different colour then I think you would be drawn to them too much and they would stand out. Hope this helps 😊
Thanks. Fun video. Gives me some ideas for my garden fence.
Thanks for watching and so pleased you liked it 👍🏻
Did you use oil based or a solid stain?
No this is a water based wood stain 👍🏻
Done it myself after watching this - using Cuprinol Black - well pleased
That’s great, so pleased I could help 😊
Your garden is beautiful. I grew up in Basildon, Essex but left in 1979. We just bought a house in Wisconsin three years ago and the back yard was practically a clean slate. Sadly we have pretty bad clay soil that doesn't drain well so I've spent last year and this spring double digging and adding compost to improve it. I've been busy planting Lime light hydrangeas along my 6ft privacy fence and after watching your video on painting your fence black, I have decided that I'm going to paint ours a very dark brown. It's about 30 years old and in much need of power washing and painting, so thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks for the lovely comment Anne and hearing your story only inspires me to create more content like this. So pleased my black fence has helped too and good luck with the project I am sure it will look great and be worth the effort.
Love it, think I would also paint those pilars.. I recently had a thought Im planning to have fence/ furniture etc all black in my garden after watching videos of one gardener who had it all white, really didnt like it :D pops to much and its all you can see then
Thank you, so pleased you liked it. I still love my black fence. Personally I like the contrast in the posts but it’s all individual taste. Thanks for watching 😊
@@SpencerCollection of course, your garden you look at every day in the end! Can I ask how long those ball shaped shrubs grow to that size and what are they called please?
@@mayagame not sure how long it takes to get them that size. I purchased them at this size over 15 years ago and keep them trimmed to this size and shape. They are box balls if you are looking for some from a garden centre or nursery. Hope that helps
@@SpencerCollection thank you, yes, didnt know you can plant them that big already!
Thanks, I'm calling in the professionals, too risky to do it myself and make a mess.
Good call, they will know what they are doing and have all the right kit. I hope you love the finished result 👍🏻
Thanks for the help - I am now going to paint or stain the fence which surrounds and dominates my small grey slabbed garden black. There are lots of videos on how to do the actual painting, I'm not sure which is easiest to apply it with - a brush or a sprayer?
I would go brush every time as you can control where it goes easier. Spraying can go all over and you have another job masking up etc. hope that helps and thanks for watching 😊
more like filming myself from all angles taking photos of snowdrops. 😂 Did you do this all yourself? looks great
Thank you, yes I did all the filming myself. I sometimes wonder why I bother then I get great messages like this that inspire me to do more 🙌🏻
@@SpencerCollection I could see them working in a longer less dynamic format doubling as asmr vidoes too... Beautiful serene imagery and nature sounds. Slightly softer sound
Hi, what type of stain did you use? Half transparent / solid?
I used Ronseal Trade Fence Stain in Tudor Black. I would say it is semi transparent rather than solid colour. Which I liked because some of the grain showed through. Hope this helps and thanks for watching 😊
Your garden looks terrific Mark. I like how you've emphasised the slope as you say. Like the edging too
Thanks Richard it been a lot of hard work but hopefully it’s been worth it! I have more plans and tweaks planned this year too😊
@@SpencerCollection It's amazing just how rewarding a garden can be. Looking, learning, experiencing, experimenting. And I'm learning (at last) to see it as an evolving process! Ours is coming along albeit on a much smaller scale. Bought the black stain (from your vid) and just waiting for the rain to stop before getting stuck into the fence! Thanks again Mark. Subscribed
@@SuccessShared so pleased it’s inspired you with your own garden. It is definitely an evolving project that is never truly finished and very rewarding. Thanks for your support, hoping to post new videos soon. 😊
