I was standing in front of him last time and he was so good!! He had 3 basses (including an upright) he kept switching between for different songs, never saw him with a pick once. I've been playing bass for 15+ years and his playing is some of the tightest I've seen live, his grooves are relentless

Comparing Streetlight Manifesto to any other ska band is like comparing Michael Jordan to any other basketball player. SLM are on a completely different plane of existence.
I like SLM because they have more “hardcore” vibe. Both in their musicality and lyrics. A lot of other ska is very happy and “Sunny” where streetlight is darker and edgier.

I call them a ska band as shorthand and to acknowledge their roots but it's pretty clear they have moved well beyond third wave ska (while maintaining some elements of that sound).

Streetlight never disappoints live, and I'd go so far as to say they have put on some of the best live shows I have ever seen. Every single person in the band is a true master of their craft, and it shows not just in their writing, but their live performances as well. One of the greatest bands of all time (not just in Ska) and I will die on that hill. R.I.P Matthew for real, the band will never be the same without him
I saw them for the 2nd time a couple weeks ago and they sounded exactly like the album versions of the songs they played. So tight and the energy in the venue was indescribable. At one point the mosh pit expanded to nearly the entirety of the GA floor area. When I wasn't in the pit my wife and I were right in front of stage left so I could get a better view of Pete McCullough and I had to warn her to brace herself because the pit had expanded to damn near where we were lol. I loved every minute of it.
Iv seen Street Light about 12 times and I will continue to do so. Hands down one of the most funnest, talented and energetic shows every time. If you get a chance, go see these guys. RIP Matt.

My wife, who initially wasn't a huge fan, went with me to a show and as we're leaving she said it was probably the coolest concert she had been to. The next year when they announced a new tour I told my wife they were playing about 2 hours away and that I was buying tickets and asked if she wanted to go and she said, and I quote, "Hell yeah!"
Streetlight is touring right now & if you're in a local city you HAVE to see them live. Probably the best live shows I've ever been to, each 2 or 3 I've gone to are absolutely amazing.
This is my Greatful Dead band. I see them at least once a year. Usually 2 or 3. They don't need a huge production, the vibe and the fans singing/chanting every line is infectious.

Catch-22 is actually a different band that Thomas Kolnaky was the lead singer for. He left and formed Streetlight, but Catch-22 found a new singer and made several more albums. Fans believe the line , "If you hate me so much than stop singing my songs" from A Moment of Silence is a direct reference to Catch-22 performing songs from "Keasbey Nights" live even after he left the band.

If you like Reggae, check out Hepcat or The Aggrolites. If you like Hardcore, check out Link 80 or Leftover Crack. If you like Metal, check out Do It With Malice or Voodoo Glow Skulls. If you like Hip Hop, check out Keyser Soze or Sonic Boom Six. If you want to hear the original ska, that led to the creation of Rocksteady and Reggae, check out The Skatelites or Desmond Dekker. There really is a ska for every taste. Unless one just hates fun.

YES! I was just saying in another comment that I've been seeing them since 2006, and I regret none of it! From the BOTAR shows with a full orchestra to Toh Kay shows in small bars to full Streetlight shows, they NEVER DISAPPOINT! I've never clicked a Palmisano video faster!

But man, hearing some of the Jazz versions that have come out from the Ballroom makes me super envious. Lately I've been covering a ton of Toh Kay versions, and I got my kids singing their music. We are truly blessed to have Tomas and the crew still touring!

Thanks for taking the request Michael! Tomas Kalnoky is truly a talent when it comes to writing and composing. His has a real knack for melody. His guitar playing is so good yet usually overshadowed by the brass section. His solo acoustic stuff is amazing. I hear these songs and think of theme songs for the NBA (Roundball rock) or Monday Night football. Going to try and see them live at the Fimore Silver Spring in September.
First off, love that you’re doing Streetlight!! The guitarist & singer is the band in a way. Tomas Kalnoky… listen to some of his solo acoustic covers of Streetlight. You can find it on TH-cam by the name of “Toh Kay”. Don’t quote me, but im pretty sure he’s classically trained. There’s also another band he’s played symphonic versions of Streetlight with, called Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution. Very cool stuff!!!
Tomas isn't classically trained, but he did subject himself to art school, so he understands that kind of pressure. He's a perfectionist with very high standards for himself and the people he works with. The rest of the band, except for one guy, ARE classically trained, though. I don't remember which other guy it is. So, what little they lack in classical training they make up for with self-harm levels of dedication to personal excellence.
Streetlight LIVE rips! each and everytime! First time I saw these fine folks was back at Bamboozle left in Irvine CA like 1000 years ago give or take and was HOOKED then and still now.
I got a real big soft spot for deep brass in my life now at 70.......and this is that....."WILD BRASS!!" This is always my favorite video to watch anyone react to. That first wall of sound is absolute chaos, yet every individual player is flawless. It’s a song you can listen to ten times in a row and hear something new every time. I’ve never seen a band (of any genre) achieve the perfection Streetlight Manifesto has.

One of the absolute best lives shows I've ever been to was Streetlight Manifest in the Starland Ballroom in or near their hometown. I think it was the first show with their new trombonist and his family was standing next to the stage right in front of where I was when I wasn't in the mosh pit. It was pretty heartwarming to watch them watch their son. Every once in a while he'd look over at them with the biggest smile on his face.
100% I've yet to see such a united audience for another band big or small. Everyone at a Streetlight show knows exactly what's coming. They're absolutely into it, the entire set is peak energy levels and the vibe is super positive.
So glad to see SLM getting love. Honestly they really are contenders for top 10 bands ever. Incredible musicians, highly talented. And every. Single. Show. Absolutely insane.
They are touring through the end of summer to winter! I'll be seeing them in July in Vegas at the Brooklyn Bowl and I'll see them in LA in August! They are just as snappy as ever, and that's from someone who has been seeing them live since 2006! I think the only change from the line-up in this video is the Trumpet player Matt Stewart I don't believe will be with them.

Check out Do It With Malice. Their drummer DEFINITELY listens to a lot of metal, and puts his doubled bass pedals to work. They're not quite as genre-fluid as Streetlight, but they really nailed the metal-ska sound. As a first song to check out for metal vibes, I'd recommend 'Mark My Words.' The song starts with the sound of a shotgun being racked and fired, with the band coming in hard with a steady double bass beat behind it.

Tomas, the singer writes...i guess composes pretty much everything for the band. He's super talented. I can't wait to see them in Norfolk September 21.
Been listening to these guys since 2003, and they quickly became one of my favorite bands of all time. You should listen to some album versions as well, as the mix is better than some of these live videos. However, don't misunderstand me. These guys live are TIGHT and ON POINT every time. I've seen them probably 10+ times and the show is incredible every time. Also, RIP Matt. You're so very dearly missed.
Ska was never my favorite thing, though I've always liked it. Metal was always my main thing, but Streetlight has always stood out for me. One of my all time favorite bands. I've seen them play live nearly every time they've come to my city for the last 2 decades or so. Definitely recommend diving into their discography.
If this is the original drummer I met him on their first tour when they were just blowing up. I think MU380 opened. 100% knew this guy was in drum line like me from his style. He autographed my marching coordinates as it was the only thing I had on me. Bass player was shredding with a lit cigarette in his right hand. Straight up badasses. Maybe 150 people at the show. Probably the best concert of my life.
I had to the opportunity to be around these gents for most of the summer of 2012 and the incredible musicianship didn't just fall from the sky. I dont think I saw any of them without their instrument in hand.
They just released a live video from last summer on their channel, worth a watch if not a react video. All the horns get their moment to shine and their trumpet player sadly passed last year. I rarely miss a tour stop when they are near by. Some of the best live music going and depending on the crowd they can pull a mighty mosh pit.
I always felt like the guitarist's, Tomas (also the songwriter), skills are underplayed in the Streetlight Manifesto songs. He's very rarely playing lead. Usually the vocals are up front or the horns are. However, when he is performing solo or with a small group of musicians you can see that he is an EXTREMELY talented classical guitarist. His guitar playing tends to get lost in the more bombastic chaos the horn players make or in the blistering pace the drummer sets. The bassist, hidden back there, is an absolute beast too. Someone once describe Streetlight as a group of virtuoso musicians just having fun, and I think that's accurate. Everyone is at the top of their games at all times. Check out Toh Kay, which is his slower solo project. "Streetlight Lullabies" is just him alone in a room with an acoustic guitar. It's also how the songs sound when he firsts writes them, according to him. This song is even on that album.
My guess is regardless how many people love you when you are passing…. The only ones whose love will really matter, is from those whose love and presence you want in your life.
dude if you think this is crazy you should check out their song The Three of Us. It's a wall of sound all the way through and it's really heavy by Ska/Punk standards

I’m a Bari sax player from way back and also a bass guitar try hard. This band is like adderall for me. Everything I could ask for without knowing I wanted it.

It's hard for those that focus on lead. I don't intentionally focus on creative rhythm guit but I naturally am able to do those tasks without trying. People generally don't focus on or appreciate rhythm guitar but I think it's more important then people realize. It's probably the reason I picked up drums so easily. I think non musicians see tapping for example and think it's just do crazy but to us guitarists it's just a natural extension of our creative expression
Tomas Kalnoky (guitarist, singer) and Chris Thatcher (drums) are the only guys in the band who don't have Master's degrees in their instruments. Chris is just a beast of a drummer, and Tomas went to school for graphic design (and I believe is still the major force behind their iconography), but clearly you don't need degrees to play that well.

Thanks for this! I love ska in general, but especially this band and the singer's previous band, Catch-22. I'm convinced the 4th wave of ska is just about to pop off, and I'm ready for it.

One of the absolute best lives shows I've ever been to was Streetlight Manifest in the Starland Ballroom in or near their hometown. I think it was the first show with their new trombonist and his family was standing next to the stage right in front of where I was when I wasn't in the mosh pit. It was pretty heartwarming to watch them watch their son. Every once in a while he'd look over at them with the biggest smile on his face.
My god, this band live is such an incredible experience! The music, the fans, the pits - every single bit is top-tier. ❤
100% I've yet to see such a united audience for another band big or small. Everyone at a Streetlight show knows exactly what's coming. They're absolutely into it, the entire set is peak energy levels and the vibe is super positive.
So glad to see SLM getting love. Honestly they really are contenders for top 10 bands ever. Incredible musicians, highly talented. And every. Single. Show. Absolutely insane.

Just saw Streetlight at Royal Oak Music Theater in Michigan and loved every minute! Devon Kay and the Solutions was a solid opener.

They are touring through the end of summer to winter! I'll be seeing them in July in Vegas at the Brooklyn Bowl and I'll see them in LA in August! They are just as snappy as ever, and that's from someone who has been seeing them live since 2006! I think the only change from the line-up in this video is the Trumpet player Matt Stewart I don't believe will be with them.

Streetlight is music nerd ska (in the best way possible of course.) if you want metal ska listen to something like Choking Victim.
Check out Do It With Malice. Their drummer DEFINITELY listens to a lot of metal, and puts his doubled bass pedals to work. They're not quite as genre-fluid as Streetlight, but they really nailed the metal-ska sound.
As a first song to check out for metal vibes, I'd recommend 'Mark My Words.' The song starts with the sound of a shotgun being racked and fired, with the band coming in hard with a steady double bass beat behind it.

Streetlight and Big D & the Kids Table are my top favorite skacore bands, and definitely stand out as leagues ahead of other ska bands.

Been listening to these guys since 2003, and they quickly became one of my favorite bands of all time. You should listen to some album versions as well, as the mix is better than some of these live videos. However, don't misunderstand me. These guys live are TIGHT and ON POINT every time. I've seen them probably 10+ times and the show is incredible every time.
Also, RIP Matt. You're so very dearly missed.

Ska was never my favorite thing, though I've always liked it. Metal was always my main thing, but Streetlight has always stood out for me. One of my all time favorite bands. I've seen them play live nearly every time they've come to my city for the last 2 decades or so. Definitely recommend diving into their discography.

If this is the original drummer I met him on their first tour when they were just blowing up. I think MU380 opened. 100% knew this guy was in drum line like me from his style. He autographed my marching coordinates as it was the only thing I had on me. Bass player was shredding with a lit cigarette in his right hand. Straight up badasses. Maybe 150 people at the show. Probably the best concert of my life.

I had to the opportunity to be around these gents for most of the summer of 2012 and the incredible musicianship didn't just fall from the sky. I dont think I saw any of them without their instrument in hand.
They just released a live video from last summer on their channel, worth a watch if not a react video. All the horns get their moment to shine and their trumpet player sadly passed last year.
I rarely miss a tour stop when they are near by. Some of the best live music going and depending on the crowd they can pull a mighty mosh pit.

I always felt like the guitarist's, Tomas (also the songwriter), skills are underplayed in the Streetlight Manifesto songs. He's very rarely playing lead. Usually the vocals are up front or the horns are. However, when he is performing solo or with a small group of musicians you can see that he is an EXTREMELY talented classical guitarist. His guitar playing tends to get lost in the more bombastic chaos the horn players make or in the blistering pace the drummer sets. The bassist, hidden back there, is an absolute beast too. Someone once describe Streetlight as a group of virtuoso musicians just having fun, and I think that's accurate. Everyone is at the top of their games at all times.
Check out Toh Kay, which is his slower solo project. "Streetlight Lullabies" is just him alone in a room with an acoustic guitar. It's also how the songs sound when he firsts writes them, according to him. This song is even on that album.

My guess is regardless how many people love you when you are passing…. The only ones whose love will really matter, is from those whose love and presence you want in your life.

It's hard for those that focus on lead. I don't intentionally focus on creative rhythm guit but I naturally am able to do those tasks without trying. People generally don't focus on or appreciate rhythm guitar but I think it's more important then people realize.
It's probably the reason I picked up drums so easily. I think non musicians see tapping for example and think it's just do crazy but to us guitarists it's just a natural extension of our creative expression

Tomas Kalnoky (guitarist, singer) and Chris Thatcher (drums) are the only guys in the band who don't have Master's degrees in their instruments. Chris is just a beast of a drummer, and Tomas went to school for graphic design (and I believe is still the major force behind their iconography), but clearly you don't need degrees to play that well.

ska predates reggae. reggae is laid back stoner ska. ska has it's roots in the 1960's in the Caribbean and streetlight manifest isn't ska, it's punk with horns. thank you for reading my ted talk.
