Please for the love of god, do more Streetlight Manifesto! They’re one of the tightest, most talented bands around and they don’t get enough love on the TH-cam reaction scene. “The Blonde Leads the Blind”, “Oh Me, Oh My”, and “Somewhere in the Between” are some of my favorite songs by them. You can check out their first album, but the production value is much lower than their subsequent albums and they won’t have as much ear candy as their newer songs.

The Hands that Thieve album really is on another level entirely. I love all their albums, and even their precursor, Catch-22’s more raw stuff, but man, THtT is a masterpiece compared to everything else they’ve done, and since it was their most recent album, it gives me a lot of hope for their next one when it finally comes out a few years after the heat death of the universe consumes all life.

Mad props to the patron who suggested Streetlight.
I saw Streetlight live probably a dozen times between 2005-2014. Best ska shows I've ever been to. They sound just as good, if not better live.
I'll never forget seeing them at the Webster Theater in Hartford, CT. The crowd was on pins and needles waiting for them to go on. The band runs up on stage and the singer tells the crowd "Hey, hey, quiet quiet... we have an announcement to make." The whole place goes dead silent. BOOM they just start playing (I think it was "Watch It Crash") and seemingly in a split second the biggest skank circle breaks out.
I have so many great memories of going to their shows with my friends.

I saw a Streetlight show in some place in Northern Kentucky (I disremember the exact town, they're all pretty small and kind of bleed together; all I can really do is narrow it down to either Covington, Newport, Bellevue, or Dayton), somewhere right across the river from Cincinnati, OH. And not only Streetlight, but Mustard Plug opened for them. The show was insane and an absolute ton of fun.
I had such a blast that I intentionally went easy on the whiskey just so I could enjoy the show more and for longer. Trust me, that's a lot coming from a devout alcoholic lol.

Streetlight mainfesto is very lucky that all of their horn players are also pretty decent singers. The fact that they can use SO many different singers on every song really puts them a cut above. The fact that at any moment you can have background vocals, gang vocals, lead vocals, and still have a couple horns belting out really lets them sound HUGE

One of the things I really love about this band (besides their overall awesomeness) is that I can listen to their songs over and over again and still hear something new every time by focusing on the drums or guitar or horns or backing vocals, because there are so many cool sounds together. In that sense, their songs never get old. I recommend down, down, down to Mephisto's cafe or We will fall together next.

    @Crunchatize_Me_Senpai 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

YESSS! I suggested this. With a long, wordy message where I sperged out over how amazing these guys are at writing music lol. (Well, actually, I suggested The Hands that Thieve, which is a different song, but it’s also the name of the album both songs are off of, so I see where the confusion came from. But I’m totally stoked that you found this one because it’s killer.) I’m glad you were just as blown away by them as I am.
Seriously, this is my favorite musical project in history. They also check all of _my_ boxes: high energy, deep lyrics, and a lot of subtle moving parts sprinkled throughout their songs- especially in their later stuff. I’m not educated in any musical fields, but I still appreciate complex arrangements like this, and they kill it.
The Hands that Thieve is probably my personal favorite song, and this whole album is crazy good, but they have a lot of good stuff out there. 🤘 Much love from Missouri, glad you enjoyed it!
And of _course,_ I’m still here.

The lead singer has a solo act as Toh Kay, where he plays the songs acoustically, sometimes with only an acoustic guitar. Very worth listening into too.
Oh and there's a new Album coming, but it's been just around the corner since summer 2019, so they might as well release it in april 2023 as a 10 year anniversary of the album you're listening to...

Just browsing...looking for more vids about Streetlight Manifesto, considering they have little to no discography on YT, and here I find another recent react to their "God-tier" work, and it's my absolute favorite: The Three of Us.
Thank you so much for sharing this, for contributing to the memory of SLM. The Hand That Thieves is another great song, but The Three of Us, is by far my favorite.🎶
God bless, and I hope you do in fact enjoy the complexity and range of the rest of their work. Their story is somewhat sad as they were slighted far too early, but man it's a joy to know others who take joy in listening to their work.

You comment that they had to have an excellent engineer. I don't know anything about that end of music, but I've seen them live half a dozen times and they sound JUST AS GOOD live. Just amazing live performances. They keep that pace and energy going for 2+ hours every time.
And if you're working your way through just enjoying their music, keep in mind that the song writer, Tomas Kalnoky, wrote Keasbey Nights (same album recorded by him with Catch-22 first, then by Streetlight.) when he was 18. Great lyrics, most songs have a lot of deep meaning. And of course... the horns. The Horns! Love 'em.

That first min had me thinking of the voodoo glow skulls. A group he might really like but im not sure about their vocals.
He needs to check out: as the foot steps fade away by catch-22(now called streetlight manifesto). Its incredible song where they do an amazing job channeling simon & garfunkel within their genre of ska/punk. So much so, prior to the dramatic increase in tempo, well outside the snappiest of folk rock, you'd probably believe it was a sim & gar tune from back in their heyday performed by the duo.

No you're exactly right, it's not quite "ska" per se. Like they're a ska band in the sense that they have that instrumentation, but I think style wise they're completely their own beast. Their earlier stuff definitely leans more in the ska direction, but as they evolved over time they really came into their own. Frankly, I think every album is better than the last when it comes to Streetlight, and so the Hands that Thieve is definitely my favorite! Plus yeah, the bassist is incredible, the drummer is incredible, the horns are all incredible, and even Tomas's guitar playing is pretty impressive! I mean he's mostly playing only rhythm parts in most songs but his strumming is so quick and his chords are so accurate, and that is hard to do! Believe me I've tried to learn some Streetlight songs and his rhythm parts are as intricate and difficult as a lot of bands' lead parts! Add onto that the impressive fingerstyle folk styles he does as Toh Kay and I mean everyone in this band is just the top of their game!
Some of my favorite tracks are "The Hands that Thieve," "If Only For Memories," "They Broke Him Down," "The Receiving End of it All," "Forty Days," "Point / Counterpoint," "Here's to Life," "Walking Away," "Kristina She Don't Know I Exist," (both originally recorded by Tomas's old band, Catch 22) and their covers of "Linoleum," Such Great Heights," and "They Provide the Paint for the Picture-Perfect Masterpiece That You Will Paint on the Insides of Your Eyelids" (which is another song written by Tomas for another band called Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution).
I listen to and love a really wide variety of music from the deathliest of metal to the souliest gospel to the most intricate jazz to the modernist of hip-hop and pop to the rawest of punk and the classicist of classical, but Streetlight Manifesto is hands down my favorite band. I loved this reaction, great stuff!

I'm still here, Geebz! I kinda dig that you don't research in a way because I enjoy watching you respond in the moment. I drop Jinjer on folks and I don't say a thing. I don't tell them to research. My mother and I actually both watch you (though from different states respectively) and it's like two for the price of one because I get your reaction and hers. Thanks for staying so open and willing to learn too. Spiral out...keep going. Mom is new to what the metal scene has become and you as well as Doug Helvering and Elizabeth Zharoff have helped enrich and enlighten more than yourselves. Music brings folks together. I dig it.
