John Butler was actually a busker in a local town near me called Fremantle that’s where he started his journey I saw him play this exact song on the side of the road it was absolutely beautiful to watch him play.
I'm near Freo, I've seen him around a bit! Been a fan of his since the late 90s, and I caught him doing Ocean at West Coast Blues & Roots a few years back. Don't think I've ever heard the same version of this song twice!

He was a kid from San Diego, Ca. He moved with his mother and brother to Australia. I saw him perform this live twice in San Diego, the 2nd time on his birthday, when he was finally reunited with his brother after a few years of touring with the original trio. They shook the concrete floor!!! Amazing!!!

(Just to name a few out of hundreds) Hopefully that doesn’t also disqualify any Banjo, Weissenborn, Lap Slide player either! 😇 From my experience seeing him many times and him living locally to me with a cult following, the general demographic of John Butlers audience do not get a lot of exposure to instrumental pieces as a broad general statement so this (from my experience) has opened a lot of people ears to acoustic instrumentals so I think it’s a great thing

This piece was my obsession in high school, so seeing you react to this and approach it from a theoretical perspective was fantastic to see. I can give you a bit more insight into the piece and how his rig works. So the tuning is actually Open C. That's CGCGCE with a Capo on 4. You were pretty much spot on aside from the 5th string which has been tuned up a semitone to C. His guitar tone uses two signals. The first is a clean acoustic sound that you get from the mics in front of the guitar, but the second is from the soundhole pickup. He takes that pickup and sends it to a distorted rig for a dirty crunch sound. The pedal on the floor you see him using is a volume pedal which he uses to blend the distorted tone into the mix with the clean acoustic tone. Finally the bass drum effect is from a stompbox, which effectively is a small wooden box with a pickup that emulates a bass drum kick with a much smaller physical footprint. Hope that clears up some of the details for you!
@@eddie68735 He did alright. If you don't know, you don't know. He knew he was on the backfoot though, turning up with standard tuning and no capo. It got pretty fucking intense. The whole thing was like some fun, fucked up carnival ride. What a blast!

His guitar actually has three pickups: Maton AP5 Pro (most probably) which is 1) an undersaddle/piezo pickup and 2) a microphone which you can blend to a point. The 3) third one is a Seymour Duncan Mag Mic (SA6, I believe) - a soundhole magnetic pickup, the distortion comes through that one. The acoustic mic's might pick up something but I'd reckon the major part of his sound comes through the pickups.
Getting to watch someone else see this for the first time was almost like getting to re-watch myself experiencing this song for the first time. So cool to observe the reaction.

Was either part of SummerSalt or the coming home tour, but he heckled someone in the front row when I saw him live last year. He messed up like half a bar of a song and got back into the groove pretty quickly, then while he's still playing he says into the mic something along the lines of: "Fucking love it when you bang along on the fence completely out of time!" Came out of nowhere, but the place erupted after his little outburst lol. That same concert someone on top of a guy's shoulders screamed out asking Missy Higgins if she wanted any 2 minute noodles, she said yeah and they lobbed a pack to her and she caught it and everyone cheered for that too. Prompted a list of all the things she's had thrown at her while on stage and said that this was probably the one she appreciates the most. Very glad I decided to see them, I hadn't really listened to any of John Butler's or Missy's music post like, 2014 either so all the new stuff was a treat.
One of the most underated musician in Australia......Hard enough for even advanced players to play....... Imagine the talent involved in writing such a piece?!
Agree been playing this song since 2008 when it came online but it's really difficult to replicate his rythm and strumming and nail it all together, very idiosyncratic song it's really a lot from him
This song is an homage to the south west of Western Australia, where John Butler grew up. He grew up in a small town called Pinjarra just south of Perth. He did a gig in Perth (where I'm from) last year and spoke of how this song was written to encapsulate the nature and beauty of the WA Southwest.
Also, the song is very old and different every time in structure and length; almost exclusive to live performance. While busking in 1996, it was on his cassette titled, Searching For Heritage. Then again on his self-titled album in 1998. As far as I know, it was only performed live until this 2012 recording. It's crazy to hear how much it's evolved over the years. I like the 2007 Federation Square version the most. Also, Media is awesome.
First time I listened to this masterpiece I cried. I listened to it when I went to bed in loop till my mother came and told me to turn it down bc she couldnt sleep. Even now I get this really strong feeling when I listen to this. Music is like real magic. How it gives us feelings that nothing else can do.
I searched TH-cam for "best acoustic guitar song" years ago and stumbled upon Ocean by some hippie I'd never heard of. Since then I've seen JBT live 3 times including a pilgrimage to Red Rocks. I was lucky enough to see him front row in a smallish club in my city where i stood just a few feet from him and his amps. The crescendo in Ocean was transcendent, I was on another planet in that moment. Lovely video, I really enjoyed getting to see someone else see this for the first time.
Still the most moving live musical performance I have ever experienced. Found Ocean the exact same way you described many years ago while studying for university exams.
Ocean is *fairly* technically demanding (there are certainly many songs that are more difficult from that standpoint), but the thing that I think is the most impressive about it is the masterful tonal control he has in playing it. With enough time, most reasonably experienced guitarists could probably play it straight, but the feel and finesse are what make this recording so awesome.
@@franciscoacosta1667 Anything original by the likes of virtuoso guitarists such as Marcin Patrzalek or Mike Dawes. But this song is definitely a great bridge to want to learn hard songs like that.
I used to play this song in the car with kids when they were small and we were on these long road trips from Perth to Albany or Esperance and we always said to imagine the ocean's mood as it builds up from a beautiful calm turquoise up to a winter storm and then receding again, waves crashing on the beach etc. The whole piece is about 10 minutes I think. It really settled them down and we all loved it. It's a complete masterpiece and played by John Butler to perfection. Good luck with this one!
my fam discovered JB as we traveled through Albany and Denmark 20 years ago, Ocean and Valley were the songs I remember being played in the car on the road. It feels as if the song is an expression of the trees, the valleys, the rivers, the beach, the ocean, the energy of those places put music. When the song is played in South-West or Great Southern, it takes on a whoooooole bigger energy.
Fun little detail: John Butler only plays an 11 string guitar, never a 12. If you look at the headstock you'll notice it's missing a tuner. He doesn't like the high G on a 12 string, so he just never uses it

Since the first time I saw JB perform this track, Its always been a story of his life to me, if you watch the versions across the years, you can see where it changes, the journey of his life, the ups.. the downs, the emotions, the passion, the upset.. Its beyond beautiful and I owe it my life
About 8 years ago, when this video was released, I was a kid in middle school. I grew up with a shitty set of circumstances and an overwhelming sense of social anxiety but I've always played guitar. Well i one day found this video you watched and I absolutely fell in love. I would put my earbuds in and just listen to it on the way to school and it did exactly what it did to you. It took me somewhere else and made me forget where that bus was taking me, either home or to school, neither great options.
I think I’ve seen JB play this live 6 times now. I’ll never hear it enough. He actually handed me earplugs before he played it one night since I was front row getting blasted. Such a musical journey and masterpiece. Gives me the chills every time I hear it. Love your reaction!
From mixdown magazine: Tuned to his preferred tuning of Open C (C,G,C,G,C,E), Butler's Maton CW-80 is actually modified to be an eleven string guitar, with Butler removing the 'ridiculous' high G string due to its sharp sound and tendency to break and replacing the G tuning peg with an ornate scroll carving upon the headstock. The article also says he’s got a SM57 stuffed in his pedalboard to do the percussive stuff.

Absolutely love "Ocean" by John Butler. I had pretty much thrown in the towel on playing guitar ever again due to years of neglect of my skills from playing Metal for 15 years, and then I just stopped because I fell out of love with the genre. Ended up with Nerve damage from a couple injuries after lifting weights for years, and Carpal Tunnel pretty much makes it impossible for me to hold a pick. I had gone to school for Classical Spanish Style Guitar, and learned to finger pluck with 4 of my fingers on my right hand. So when I stumbled on this song, it pretty much saved me. My back injury and Carpal Tunnel pain is gone after a solid year and a half of learning how to play this song all the way through. I just happened to have the same style guitar as John sitting around with 11 strings already.. Turns out that high string he cuts out had broken on my guitar too!! lol. Anyway, I got so excited, I went and performed Ocean live in front of the Ocean in Santa Cruz, Ca last year. Posted the video on my Page, when I sat down to record it cleaner, TH-cam and Facebook blocked my video because it picked it up as being "Ocean" by John Butler. Great complement to me! Anyway, John is great. Ocean is fantastic. Glad you enjoyed the tune!
I can hear the ocean in this piece so clearly. I can hear the tide coming in and crashing on the shore, the ebb and flow of the water and the pulsing of the waves. John has complete mastery of his instrument.

That’s how I’ve felt about Phish for over 2 decades, and it’s also because of them that I discovered JBT 20 years ago. This song truly is a masterpiece and one that takes me places only Phish has ever done prior. I’ve listened to this song on repeat for hours at a time and and have gone through so many different emotions, it truly is a masterpiece
Took me a full month to learn Ocean. Took me about a week to learn Drifting. Both great fun, but Drifting is deceptively easy. Also should check out Airtap by Erik Mongrain for another different style.
For the footpedals: he indeed brings distortion. He actually has two pickups on his guitar, the bridge pickup, and a magnetic seymour duncan pickup. Two jacks coming out of his guitar, and going through a lot of stuff. I was at Jadavpur University in Kolkata, India where he was to learn the sitar. He said, the song has "stoplights" which he hits during the course of the song. The rest of it is improvised. He says that the song ends abruptly because he is still on a journey in his life.

The other morning I was in a mental health crisis .I'm bi polar and meds fail me I was in a battle and my you tube algorithm sent me this and I had a sudden and never b4 shift from despair to absolute joy .I had been praying to be lifted and my prayers were answered I love God I love music I love John Butler .
This song often moves me to tears. I haven't listened in quite some time and then this shows up on my feed. At first, I was a little annoyed at this guy dissecting the piece but then again, that's the idea. He's nerding out and seems honestly intrigued. But for those of us who have listened so many times, we wait for certain parts with great anticipation and he stops the video a few times right when they happen or he's effing around on his guitar. But then one of the insane crescendos of this song happens and he is enraptured, hands up, mind blown, joy filled. Yep. That's what I came for.

John Butler's "Ocean" is the song that started me on my acoustic guitar journey. Really nice seeing a breakdown of something that is at the core of why I play. I'm deep into bluegrass fiddle tunes and Irish music and it's obvious now that they are both organic destinations from "Ocean."

The thing with Ocean, is that it's a very improv song. There are different live versions he does, and each one is unique. You always know it's Ocean, and elements of it always stay, those emotional chills, the rising tension leading to the exploding release.. yes, I liken it to sex, haha. His performance at the '10 Fuji rock festival I have an addiction to. It's not hard to imagine different parts of it as stages in a life story.

I am seeing JB in New York City this weekend. Probably 25+ shows to date since I first discovered Zebra playing in a store in San Francisco and I told the owner that I was not leaving until she found out what that song was (her friend had put together a playlist). In advance of the show, I was noodling around and came upon this. I don't know anything about music theory but somehow I was mesmerized by the descriptive translation of this song as well as by the facial expressions. I don't know if anything grabs my attention for 12 consecutive minutes like this song does.
This is my all time favourite piece of music. Just love how it resonates. John is from Australia. I also hear an Irish influence. Intentional or instinctual ? When the British colonised Australia they used it as a prison for their convicts and sent shiploads there in the 1800s, inclusive of many Irish. Since the colonisation of Australia and nz, the British, Irish and Scottish immigrated in droves to take over the land. Not a nice thing to do they way they did it I have to say. Anyway, I loved seeing your reaction to this. You started off innocently treating it like it was going to be a normal piece of music. 19:48 I was hoping for a reaction like that haha 🙌 It has to be the video I've shared the most ever since I started spending time on YT, and I honestly thought it would be way too intimidating of a song to break down.. Getting this note by note would be insane, but it always comes down to the underlying chord progression, and it's good to see the ease with which you pick each chord and it's interval. I've been trying to deepen my "chord knowledge" last few months and it's a never ending rabbit hole.. but understanding the right progression like you do is a great fundamental to practice 🤟 Crazy rhythmic and dynamic folklore experience haha.. and for the pedal, I'm probably wrong, but could it be a reverb pedal set to a very heavy reverb, and he inserts that heavy reverb at the END of each sentence to punctuate each phrase?! Feels to me like a quick vacuum reverb that he controls with that volume pedal..! Anyhoo, great choice of video to react to, one of my favourite you've done 🤟
Saw him perform this live for the first time 2 weeks ago. As John Butler explained, it was a song he wrote when busking on the streets, every version is different, and it is a song that continues to write itself over time. Simply magnificent
The noise you made at the end is the exact same one I made after watching this the first time. There are countless versions of this song because he plays it differently each time. The oldest one where he has dreads and he says he's going to play it before he starts because he "wants to". It's one of the best things I've ever seen on guitar.
Hit nail on the head with E major and helps immensely to tune the guitar to open C and then capo the 4th as JB does. Cool watching you figure it out on the go as I had to look all this up, LOL :)
I love this video for a few reasons. 1) ocean is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time 2) this song makes you think, it makes you reminisce, it takes you somewhere else. For me it makes me think of all the good things with me and my family 3) I don't know 95% about what you're talking about when it comes to music, but I could sense your overwhelming love of talent
It's wild to have that song pop up here after all these years. Back then when John Butler released that song, I just got together with my girlfriend and somehow the song always represented some kind of outlook the future of our relationship. With all the uncertainty in the beginning. the back and forth between the playful parts and uneasiness. the powerful buildup and release at the end. I could visualize us going through all those stages and for some reason the shredding near the end always represented the joy and struggle of having a child together. It produced all these intense visuals in my head and sent me through all those motions of excitement, curiosity and fear. And it brought me to tears. Oh how I cried. Now, 11 years later, all of this became reality. We stayed together, married, had our ups and downs and then, finally, a child. And here I sit again, tears streaming down my face. This feels so surreal right now, haha! -- Thanks for your hard work Michael!

From my experience seeing him many times and him living locally to me with a cult following, the general demographic of John Butlers audience do not get a lot of exposure to instrumental pieces as a broad general statement so this (from my experience) has opened a lot of people ears to acoustic instrumentals so I think it’s a great thing

John butler is an absolute treasure and the world is a significantly better place because of him
the world is not a better place because of him. But it definitely would be if the people knew him as much as people know all the mainstream musicians. its a sad sad world where people dont recognise an absolute diamond like him.
This piece was my obsession in high school, so seeing you react to this and approach it from a theoretical perspective was fantastic to see. I can give you a bit more insight into the piece and how his rig works.
So the tuning is actually Open C. That's CGCGCE with a Capo on 4. You were pretty much spot on aside from the 5th string which has been tuned up a semitone to C.
His guitar tone uses two signals. The first is a clean acoustic sound that you get from the mics in front of the guitar, but the second is from the soundhole pickup. He takes that pickup and sends it to a distorted rig for a dirty crunch sound. The pedal on the floor you see him using is a volume pedal which he uses to blend the distorted tone into the mix with the clean acoustic tone.
Finally the bass drum effect is from a stompbox, which effectively is a small wooden box with a pickup that emulates a bass drum kick with a much smaller physical footprint.
Hope that clears up some of the details for you!

@@eddie68735 He did alright. If you don't know, you don't know. He knew he was on the backfoot though, turning up with standard tuning and no capo. It got pretty fucking intense. The whole thing was like some fun, fucked up carnival ride. What a blast!

His guitar actually has three pickups: Maton AP5 Pro (most probably) which is 1) an undersaddle/piezo pickup and 2) a microphone which you can blend to a point. The 3) third one is a Seymour Duncan Mag Mic (SA6, I believe) - a soundhole magnetic pickup, the distortion comes through that one. The acoustic mic's might pick up something but I'd reckon the major part of his sound comes through the pickups.
Getting to watch someone else see this for the first time was almost like getting to re-watch myself experiencing this song for the first time. So cool to observe the reaction.

Was either part of SummerSalt or the coming home tour, but he heckled someone in the front row when I saw him live last year. He messed up like half a bar of a song and got back into the groove pretty quickly, then while he's still playing he says into the mic something along the lines of: "Fucking love it when you bang along on the fence completely out of time!"
Came out of nowhere, but the place erupted after his little outburst lol.
That same concert someone on top of a guy's shoulders screamed out asking Missy Higgins if she wanted any 2 minute noodles, she said yeah and they lobbed a pack to her and she caught it and everyone cheered for that too. Prompted a list of all the things she's had thrown at her while on stage and said that this was probably the one she appreciates the most.
Very glad I decided to see them, I hadn't really listened to any of John Butler's or Missy's music post like, 2014 either so all the new stuff was a treat.

This song is an homage to the south west of Western Australia, where John Butler grew up. He grew up in a small town called Pinjarra just south of Perth. He did a gig in Perth (where I'm from) last year and spoke of how this song was written to encapsulate the nature and beauty of the WA Southwest.

Also, the song is very old and different every time in structure and length; almost exclusive to live performance. While busking in 1996, it was on his cassette titled, Searching For Heritage. Then again on his self-titled album in 1998. As far as I know, it was only performed live until this 2012 recording. It's crazy to hear how much it's evolved over the years.
I like the 2007 Federation Square version the most.

I searched TH-cam for "best acoustic guitar song" years ago and stumbled upon Ocean by some hippie I'd never heard of. Since then I've seen JBT live 3 times including a pilgrimage to Red Rocks. I was lucky enough to see him front row in a smallish club in my city where i stood just a few feet from him and his amps. The crescendo in Ocean was transcendent, I was on another planet in that moment. Lovely video, I really enjoyed getting to see someone else see this for the first time.
Still the most moving live musical performance I have ever experienced. Found Ocean the exact same way you described many years ago while studying for university exams.
Oh dude the crescendo almost moves me to tears every time I hear it on a recorded version, I can't imagine what it's like live.

Ocean is *fairly* technically demanding (there are certainly many songs that are more difficult from that standpoint), but the thing that I think is the most impressive about it is the masterful tonal control he has in playing it.
With enough time, most reasonably experienced guitarists could probably play it straight, but the feel and finesse are what make this recording so awesome.

I used to play this song in the car with kids when they were small and we were on these long road trips from Perth to Albany or Esperance and we always said to imagine the ocean's mood as it builds up from a beautiful calm turquoise up to a winter storm and then receding again, waves crashing on the beach etc. The whole piece is about 10 minutes I think. It really settled them down and we all loved it. It's a complete masterpiece and played by John Butler to perfection. Good luck with this one!
my fam discovered JB as we traveled through Albany and Denmark 20 years ago, Ocean and Valley were the songs I remember being played in the car on the road. It feels as if the song is an expression of the trees, the valleys, the rivers, the beach, the ocean, the energy of those places put music. When the song is played in South-West or Great Southern, it takes on a whoooooole bigger energy.

Fun little detail: John Butler only plays an 11 string guitar, never a 12. If you look at the headstock you'll notice it's missing a tuner. He doesn't like the high G on a 12 string, so he just never uses it

About 8 years ago, when this video was released, I was a kid in middle school. I grew up with a shitty set of circumstances and an overwhelming sense of social anxiety but I've always played guitar. Well i one day found this video you watched and I absolutely fell in love. I would put my earbuds in and just listen to it on the way to school and it did exactly what it did to you. It took me somewhere else and made me forget where that bus was taking me, either home or to school, neither great options.
I think I’ve seen JB play this live 6 times now. I’ll never hear it enough. He actually handed me earplugs before he played it one night since I was front row getting blasted. Such a musical journey and masterpiece. Gives me the chills every time I hear it. Love your reaction!

The article also says he’s got a SM57 stuffed in his pedalboard to do the percussive stuff.

3) The style is influenced by celtic music

Absolutely love "Ocean" by John Butler. I had pretty much thrown in the towel on playing guitar ever again due to years of neglect of my skills from playing Metal for 15 years, and then I just stopped because I fell out of love with the genre. Ended up with Nerve damage from a couple injuries after lifting weights for years, and Carpal Tunnel pretty much makes it impossible for me to hold a pick. I had gone to school for Classical Spanish Style Guitar, and learned to finger pluck with 4 of my fingers on my right hand. So when I stumbled on this song, it pretty much saved me. My back injury and Carpal Tunnel pain is gone after a solid year and a half of learning how to play this song all the way through. I just happened to have the same style guitar as John sitting around with 11 strings already.. Turns out that high string he cuts out had broken on my guitar too!! lol. Anyway, I got so excited, I went and performed Ocean live in front of the Ocean in Santa Cruz, Ca last year. Posted the video on my Page, when I sat down to record it cleaner, TH-cam and Facebook blocked my video because it picked it up as being "Ocean" by John Butler. Great complement to me! Anyway, John is great. Ocean is fantastic. Glad you enjoyed the tune!
I can hear the ocean in this piece so clearly. I can hear the tide coming in and crashing on the shore, the ebb and flow of the water and the pulsing of the waves. John has complete mastery of his instrument.

That’s how I’ve felt about Phish for over 2 decades, and it’s also because of them that I discovered JBT 20 years ago. This song truly is a masterpiece and one that takes me places only Phish has ever done prior. I’ve listened to this song on repeat for hours at a time and and have gone through so many different emotions, it truly is a masterpiece

For the footpedals: he indeed brings distortion. He actually has two pickups on his guitar, the bridge pickup, and a magnetic seymour duncan pickup. Two jacks coming out of his guitar, and going through a lot of stuff. I was at Jadavpur University in Kolkata, India where he was to learn the sitar. He said, the song has "stoplights" which he hits during the course of the song. The rest of it is improvised. He says that the song ends abruptly because he is still on a journey in his life.

This song often moves me to tears. I haven't listened in quite some time and then this shows up on my feed. At first, I was a little annoyed at this guy dissecting the piece but then again, that's the idea. He's nerding out and seems honestly intrigued. But for those of us who have listened so many times, we wait for certain parts with great anticipation and he stops the video a few times right when they happen or he's effing around on his guitar. But then one of the insane crescendos of this song happens and he is enraptured, hands up, mind blown, joy filled. Yep. That's what I came for.

It's my favorite version and it captures what you are trying to describe even more beautifully! It's absolutely incredible and you might get more insight into what he's doing with the foot pedals.

I am not a musician myself but I am learning from the master of a craft and love to see others at work. The ability to see understand and recreate is fascinating to me. John Butler's "Ocean" is the song that started me on my acoustic guitar journey. Really nice seeing a breakdown of something that is at the core of why I play. I'm deep into bluegrass fiddle tunes and Irish music and it's obvious now that they are both organic destinations from "Ocean."

The thing with Ocean, is that it's a very improv song. There are different live versions he does, and each one is unique. You always know it's Ocean, and elements of it always stay, those emotional chills, the rising tension leading to the exploding release.. yes, I liken it to sex, haha. This video just made me realise how empty of passion my life is. I don't want to sound like a drama queen feeling sorry for myself, but really, just the passion this guys eyes as he watches every movement and very sound John Butler does, how quickly he plays by ear, how impressed he is by all the little touches ... it's his life, he can talk endless hours about it, it drives his success and he makes a living on it ... and don't even get me started on the amazing passion and beauty of John Butler himself....

I’ve loved this song for years and years and it’s so nice to watch a professional admire it just as much as I do.
I am seeing JB in New York City this weekend. Probably 25+ shows to date since I first discovered Zebra playing in a store in San Francisco and I told the owner that I was not leaving until she found out what that song was (her friend had put together a playlist). In advance of the show, I was noodling around and came upon this. I don't know anything about music theory but somehow I was mesmerized by the descriptive translation of this song as well as by the facial expressions. I don't know if anything grabs my attention for 12 consecutive minutes like this song does.

This is my all time favourite piece of music. Just love how it resonates. John is from Australia. I also hear an Irish influence. Intentional or instinctual ? When the British colonised Australia they used it as a prison for their convicts and sent shiploads there in the 1800s, inclusive of many Irish. Since the colonisation of Australia and nz, the British, Irish and Scottish immigrated in droves to take over the land. Not a nice thing to do they way they did it I have to say. Anyway, I loved seeing your reaction to this. You started off innocently treating it like it was going to be a normal piece of music. I waited because I knew what was coming and your reaction was priceless. Good on you 👍😃

Getting this note by note would be insane, but it always comes down to the underlying chord progression, and it's good to see the ease with which you pick each chord and it's interval. I've been trying to deepen my "chord knowledge" last few months and it's a never ending rabbit hole.. but understanding the right progression like you do is a great fundamental to practice 🤟
Crazy rhythmic and dynamic folklore experience haha.. and for the pedal, I'm probably wrong, but could it be a reverb pedal set to a very heavy reverb, and he inserts that heavy reverb at the END of each sentence to punctuate each phrase?! Feels to me like a quick vacuum reverb that he controls with that volume pedal..! Anyhoo, great choice of video to react to, one of my favourite you've done 🤟

Saw him perform this live for the first time 2 weeks ago. As John Butler explained, it was a song he wrote when busking on the streets, every version is different, and it is a song that continues to write itself over time. Simply magnificent

The noise you made at the end is the exact same one I made after watching this the first time. There are countless versions of this song because he plays it differently each time. The oldest one where he has dreads and he says he's going to play it before he starts because he "wants to". It's one of the best things I've ever seen on guitar.
Hit nail on the head with E major and helps immensely to tune the guitar to open C and then capo the 4th as JB does. Cool watching you figure it out on the go as I had to look all this up, LOL :)
I love this video for a few reasons. 1) ocean is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time 2) this song makes you think, it makes you reminisce, it takes you somewhere else. For me it makes me think of all the good things with me and my family 3) I don't know 95% about what you're talking about when it comes to music, but I could sense your overwhelming love of talent

It's wild to have that song pop up here after all these years. Back then when John Butler released that song, I just got together with my girlfriend and somehow the song always represented some kind of outlook the future of our relationship. With all the uncertainty in the beginning. the back and forth between the playful parts and uneasiness. the powerful buildup and release at the end. I could visualize us going through all those stages and for some reason the shredding near the end always represented the joy and struggle of having a child together. It produced all these intense visuals in my head and sent me through all those motions of excitement, curiosity and fear. And it brought me to tears. Oh how I cried.
Now, 11 years later, all of this became reality. We stayed together, married, had our ups and downs and then, finally, a child. And here I sit again, tears streaming down my face. This feels so surreal right now, haha!
