  • 3D printing pictures, called lithophanes, is a great way to impress even the toughest crowds. I hate when I can't impress everyone with my mad printing skills. No matter how complicated of a project some people just don't care. However, the one thing that cease to impress EVERYONE is a picture that only appears when backlit.

Wow, very nice video! Only filament that I had in white was glow in the dark. 100 mm x 100 mm pic of bald eagle came out great with light behind it.... lights off it glowed but it wasn't as defined. Wife is photographer, she bought a spool of white filament and wants me to start printing some pics! The new Ender 3 pro is no longer a toy in her eyes! Thanks Simon!

I found that i actually get more detail with better edges printing flat/horizontal but layer lines can be seen in sort of a step like pattern as the litho thickness is varied. This also comes along with longer print times.

If you use pastel sharpies on the back surface your lithophanes will still look white without backlight but when using backlight suddenly skin is flesh colored, hair can be blonde, clothes have color, plants are green. Totally amazing!

Hi Simon. I really enjoy your videos and I really like making lithophanes on my printers. Your videos introduced to lithophanes so thank you for that. I’ve found that different brands of white filament give you darker or lighter contrast with all other factors being the same. Do you have a favorite brand that you use? I like a lithophane that doesn’t require a strong backlight to show a nice image. After trying many white filaments I’ve found that 3d Solutech Real White works great and is cheap in the US. ZYLTECH Milky White also works great with moderate backlight. There are others that look great with stronger backlight like eSun and Prusa White.
