    Since cats are carnivores, they lack the digestive enzymes necessary to properly digest plant matter, which results in vomiting. When a cat regurgitates the grass, other indigestible matter like hairballs are also eliminated from the body, providing relief.

      I had a hard time finding more information about that as well. I think the reference to stomach pH is when food is in the stomach, rather than the pH of just the stomach acid. For carnivores, they maintain a highly acidic (1-2) pH, while the stomach pH of omnivores/herbavores increases to 4-5.

    Mic. Love the channel, however as a vegan myself too many of us make too much of the herbivore argument. Even if we we're completely omnivore it doesn't change the fact that a properly planned vegan diet is healthy, sustainable and far more moral than a more omnivorous diet, and that is a far better argument than the herbivore one.

How can you possibly expect such people to be concerned about snails, mice, and cows? The news showed supporters of this legislation gleefully applauding and rejoicing its signing into law.

      RefusesCookies. I'm borrowing the phrase "Don't impose your morals[values] on me" from the feminist's and prochoice groups that frequently used that same phrase towards the anti-abortion groups. Interestingly no one in the media or other places ever questioned the validity of this phrase. Iulian the ability to gain energy from meat does not imply evolutionary pressure to consume meat.Hippos can and do in some cases eat animals,and gain energy from it,they do not however actively seek out flesh unless under extraordinary pressures not in their natural habitat.It is by mere chance to my knowledge that Hippos can get energy from meat.This is highly fallacious as well,"I can use Algae based fuels in a Diesel engine,therefore the Diesel engine is a algae engine" perfectly exemplifies said fallacy.You have committed a non-sequitur.It *DOES NOT* follow that because you have the ability to do something evolutionary pressures MUST have led you to do in order to reproduce.

      @@nightblade4713 No we aren't. All of the indigenous tribes that live around the world have eaten animal based diets or carnivore diets. We changed from apes and started eating meat and that's what made us humans. Our small intestine became longer and our colons got smaller to digest animal foods instead of plants, and our brains got bigger from eating meat too. There are 15 essential nutrients that are not bioavailable from plants (vitamin A,D,K), collagen, etc. Meat is way more nutrient dense than plant foods. Most plants in the wild are not edible to humans and we wouldn't be able to survive on plants at all.

      You people don't know your head from your ass.
      Glutamate is one of the most important excitatory neurotransmitters in the brain. More than half the brain's synapses use glutamate. It is responsible for countless operations in the brain and is extremely important to IQ and memory. You also need it to make GABA.
      As a side note: Don't confuse glutamine, glutamic acid, and glutamate.
      Here's one example of why glutamate is not your enemy any more than any other neurotransmitter is your enemy: Down Syndrome involves a significant imbalance in the GABA-glutamate relationship. People with DS have way too much GABA activity and too little glutamate activity (they have fewer active glutamate receptors). Get it?
      I heard this other moron say some other plant foods contain glutamine - he says it as if glutamine isn't the most abundant amino acid in protein - you will find significant percentages of glutamine in ANY PROTEIN SOURCE no matter if it's meat, fish, insect, plant, whatever.
      Monosodium glutamate is a very common naturally occurring amino acid. It doesn't do anything particularly evil in the brain and the bullshit scary myths about it have been debunked. It's not a poison and it's not a sugar, it doesn't naturally occur in foods to make them tastier, so stop acting like it is.

    longest living country on Earth: Hong Kong. What do they eat? On average one pound of meat per person. data pool of 7 million people.
    without cholesterol your hormones will become destroyed. Cholesterol is a precursor to your hormones as a human being.
    Most studies you cite on humans being sick on animal-based diets are not actually meat eaters, but junk food eaters. Hot dogs, burgers, etc. from junk food restaurants are drowned in vegetable oils. Study people who eat pure meat instead.
    Vegetable oils are the leading cause of heart attacks due to how easily oxidized they are.
    Most fruits and vegetables are man made today. There is no such thing as lettuce or broccoli in nature. If you ate a wild carrot you would die.
    One of the countries with the worst life expectancy is India: vegetarians/vegans have horrible life expectancy especially when they have been vegetarian from childhood.
    Isotopic testing shows we ate pounds and pounds of meat most likely raw during our lifetime as a species.
    Meat is how we survived the ice age.
    We have a stomach acid of pH = 1-2. Herbivorous animals have a way less acidic stomach.
    We have a similar digestive system to that of a wolf.
    We did not develop claws and fangs because of evolution. We were primarily herbivores but due to changes in the environment we ADAPTED to eating and surviving off meat.
    We do not possess the ability to turn fiber into fat like gorillas do through the pyruvate cycle. And NO ANIMAL ON EARTH EATS ONLY PLANTS. they also eat insects like ants. No animal on Earth can live without eating other animals including insects.
    We can only get fat which is essential for our hormones as a HUMAN. This is why babies need only milk from the mother. They need the saturated fat (breast milk is around 50% saturated fat) to grow into a human being. Without saturated fat they would grow up with severe health issues...
    We are carnivores. We cannot digest vegetables. This is why all the vegetables in the store are man-made versions. You need meat to thrive. You kill more animals, an entire ecosystem by spraying pesticides, insecticides and rodenticides in vegetable farming. True carnivores eat two cows a year if they eat the entire cow.
    Stop acting morally superior and wake up. Get your emotions out of this for a day and start taking care of the most important animal; your own species. Human Beings. Stop caring for an animal who would kill and eat you if they had the chance and rejoin the natural cycle of life.
    Stop listening to vegans whos brains are degenerating because their brains (made up of 70% saturated fat) are not getting the fat fuel they need to function. Mental illness is from poor nourishment.
    Search how the carnivore diet study done by Harvard reversed a lot of "incurable" illnesses such as autoimmune disorders and other health issues.
    If you are vegan purely for health purposes, I suggest reevaluating your research and choices. Make sure its not by organizations with an agenda.
    If you are doing it for ethical reasons, think about all the rodents, insect and entire ecosystems your destroying.

    Hey Mic, first of all, I really like your channel, thanks for the great work!
    This video was very informative and I totally believe that a plant based whole foods diet is the healthiest for humans.
    But don't you think that your conclusion should be that we are omnivores that are better off eating like herbivores, instead of that we are indeed herbivores? Beeeecaaaauuuse the inuits? I saw your video on this topic and I do not doubt, that it is not very healthy to eat a meat based diet nor is it a justification to eat meat because they do, but they do survive on it right? And I believe their life expectancy isn't to bad, they don't die at age 30 or so. So it seems as if humans can live of meat and of plants, what makes them omnivores... Or am I wrong here? Would it theoretically be possible to take any herbivore and feed it meat and it would live an unhealthy but quite long life? Because then one could label humans herbivores as well.. Hope the last part makes sense haha.

    • @AnqzOG
      @AnqzOG 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In response to your last question, let's use a rabbit as an example.
      A few things to take note of. Physiological capabilities, time, lifestyle, metabolism, human versus rabbit anatomy.
      Rabbits don't have the physiological capabilities to obtain energy and nutrients from animal material.
      Theoretically, you could take the nutrients from animal material, put it in a powder form, and give it to the rabbit for easy absorption. But at that point it's not really "animal material." It's just nutrients taking from animal material.
      Rabbits only live to be about 8 or 12 years old and live extremely active lives. Humans nowadays eat more meat than ever, and are also less active than ever. The only way to truly give a rabbit health problems, is if you put it in a lab situation and find a special concoction to induce heart disease, in such a short timeframe, while keeping the rabbit in active as possible. It would basically require torture and the animal.
      So, it's a complex matter.
      The very act of staying alive by metabolizing materials is essentially killing you. Your cells can truly only divide so many times, so the issue is, food is actually killing you anyway. As with humans, it's not really often you die just because of your diet entirely alone. It often is that along with the many other complications like living in an active lifestyle, eating particularly on healthy types of meat, etc. And as with the inuit, good genetics help!
      Lastly, the human body and a rabbits body are extremely different. It's difficult to use statistics or information over one side, and use it as a means to draw conclusions over another.
      So in short, the answer is no. It's not the same thing.
      Humans with the ability to resist such issues were not being naturally selected for. Primarily because a lot of those issues only become detrimental past the age of producing offspring and having them grow up. Let alone the fact that you'd be comparing people up today to individuals who have existed over the past two or so million years.
      Nobody said that meat needs to be optimal for our health for us to be able to make use of it. It was a "dirty fuel" that provided food security for people over the ages.
      We can recognize that humans are omnivores, which we are, but don't have to keep making excuses for meat beyond what it was included into our diet for. Food security.

    An omnivore is an animal that eats plant and animals for sustananence. Ergo, humans are omnivores. We don't have long, sharp canines because we are evolutionary superior (by virtue of intellece and dexterous hands) to animals that require them and sharp teeth ate more prone to break. By the same token, humans can't digest many grains but we have the intellect to cook them first.

      Yeah right.. you're right.. this is hard for most people to grasp..
      Humans ate things especially meat .. out of necessity ...
      We can cook things and we are not herbivores. .. we are omnivores just cuz of the fact that our ancestors ate meat.. and plants..
      But since we are intelligent. . We can thrive on a plant based diet..
      Fat is important ,on the contrary to the popular belief of most vegans "they are not".. but they are..
      But really loved what you have to say..

    why do all vegans cherry pick their information. The reason why we don't immediately think "buffet" when we look at animals on the internet is because most of us are very civilized creatures. We are not out hunting or forging for food like we did when we were hunter gatherers. We have a disconnection and a very distorted perception of where our food comes from. That being said, if we were forced to live in nature again and face starvation on a regular basis, I think even gary yourofsky's mouth would salivate while his predator instincts kick in being face to face with a rabbit or dear.

      Our carnivoros traits
      Humans have many small fat cells like all carnivores. ‘Pond and Mattacks compared the structure of fat cells in various types of animals. Carnivores were found to have a higher number of smaller fat cells and omnivores a smaller number of larger fat cells. Humans were found to be at the top of the carnivorous pattern. Pond and Mattacks conclude: “These figures suggest that the energy metabolism of humans is adapted to a diet in which lipids and proteins rather than carbohydrates, make a major contribution to the energy supply.”’
      Humans have the stomach acidity of a unique carnivore. ‘Humans had a high level of acidity of 1.5 that lies between that of obligate and facultative scavengers. Producing acidity, and retaining the stomach walls to contain that acidity, is energetically expensive, so would presumably only evolve if the level of pathogens in the human diet was high.’ Note that herbivoros primates have a stomach pH varying from around 4 to 6 [17]. Most omnivores are between 2 and 4 [17].
      As previously noted, humans have a reduced energy extraction capacity from plants. ‘Our large intestine, where fiber is processed to energy, is 77% smaller by volume than that of a chimpanzee our size … The size and our small intestine, where -macronutrients are absorbed is 62% larger than that of a chimpanzee our size … the gut morphology adaptations both improved animal food exploitation and at the same time hindered the full exploitation of fibrous plant foods’
      Humans substituted primate climbing capabilities for an adaptation to throwing. ‘Roach et al claim that the structure of our shoulder represents an adaptation to carnivory. They describe how our shoulder is perfectly adapted to throwing, which must be useful, in their opinion, mainly in hunting and protection from predators. They show that in contrast, the chimpanzee’s shoulder is adapted to climbing trees.’
      Humans have much higher fat reserves than chimps, our closest relatives [3]. Carrying a high amount of fat costs energy and reduces the speed of chasing or fleeting, but gives us the ability to go periods without food while we hunt and scavenge. Apes are constantly eating and surrounded by plants, and don’t need this function. If we were constantly eating plants, we wouldn’t have adapted this way.
      Human jaws and teeth shrank, forfeiting chewing capabilities. We know early humans crafted tools to help process meat, even before fire. It takes 39% to 46% less force to chew and swallow processed meat than processed root foods [11]. Evolution chose to forgo the ability to properly chew certain plant-based foods to allow for more room in the skull [11]. The ability to use tools also explains why we don’t have carnivorous fangs - we didn’t have to tear raw flesh from a carcass with our bare teeth.

    Just a quick question. You say at 5:22 the most dramatic difference between omnivore and herbivore is gut length v body length. Omnivores are 4-5 x body length. Herbivores are 10-12 x body length. At 8:55 you say the human small intestine is 23 foot long. The average height of a human is 5 - 6 foot. This would mean that to be an omnivore they would have a 20-30 foot long intestine.
    If they were an herbivore, they would have a gut length of 50-72 foot long but they don't. Am I missing something?

    • @cmap1503
      @cmap1503 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Essop Merrick thats only the small intestine

    • @essopmerrick2283
      @essopmerrick2283 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes. The long intestine is only about 5 foot long. 23 foot + 5 foot =28 foot. That is the length of an omnivores intestine. (20-30 foot) not 50-72 foot. The 'long' in long intestine is a misnomer and doesn't account for the other 27-49 ft it would need to be to belong to a herbivore. Unless vegans are claiming to have evolved an intestine of over twice the length of other humans.

    • @MictheVegan
      @MictheVegan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      +Essop Merrick The distinction here is that body length is not height. Body length is defined a shoulders to end of hips, or one's "trunk" length. Imagine measuring a dog, just like how you wouldn't count its legs (or tail) in body length, you don't count ours either.

    • @MictheVegan
      @MictheVegan  8 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      +Mic. the Vegan And human trunk length is surprisingly small. Try measuring your own, likely around 2 feet.

    • @essopmerrick2283
      @essopmerrick2283 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Mic. the Vegan Thanks for your reply.
      I'm aware of what the torso length is (C7 to hip crest) but you say 'body length' which is defined in the dictionary as the length of the body.
      'Body length' is height and is not generally defined as 'shoulders to end of hips' unless you're trying to re-define already established terms just for your channel, which you can do... but it tends to cause confusion. You mean torso length, which is fine.

    the pissed off non-vegans in the comments are hilarious... like i can't argue that we didn't evolve to *be able to* eat meat, but that doesn't change the fact that it's totally unnecessary for us to consume it? at certain points humans probably ate meat out of necessity if a varied herbivore diet wasn't available but... in our society we very much have the option of choosing to eat or not to eat certain foods lol

    • @crakapakin
      @crakapakin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      "able to eat meat".... No.We are obligate omnivores. B12 is a vital nutrient not available in a plant based diet. Herbivores are able to obtain B12 by way of fermentation of plant matter which is then either regurgitated or excreted from the anus to be chewed and swallowed for digestion. Just wanted to clarify that.

    • @camtyto0777
      @camtyto0777 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      crakapakin pretty sure ppl can get b12 from dirt and stuff, like u only need a relatively small amt so probably no one got that deficiency back when things weren't obsessively washed and sanitized... but tbh even if that's not true, "u might get a deficiency if u don't take a supplement" is not a good argument against veganism in general

    • @camtyto0777
      @camtyto0777 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      crakapakin then again, why am i wasting a moment of my time replying to downtown with a "people eating tasty animals" icon

    • @maywemeetagain803
      @maywemeetagain803 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      animals get b12 from their food so if your eating animals your already supplementing b12, your filtering it through a dead body, id rather just take a cleaner supplement directly.

    • @crakapakin
      @crakapakin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, Jordan. Animals do not get their B12 from their food. If that were the case, humans could as well. But we can not because we are not herbivores. We require B12 from our diet alone whereas herbivores obtain B12 from their digestive function, which is not even comparable to human digestion. They are able to obtain B12 by way of fermentation. During fermentation, microbes synthesize and release B12. The plant material, containing B12 and many other nutrients, is either regurgitated or excreted from the anus to be chewed and swallowed for digestion. Ruminants such as cows, goats and some macropods (kangaroo and wallaby) regurgitate and chew cud. Hindgut fermenters, such as rabbits eat the cecotropes excreted from their anus.

    Hey Mic, love your videos! I got curious about the data on mortality in Norway during Nazi occupation: couldn’t people just be dying of other nazi related causes? I know it is deaths/10k population, but what if people are just dying of starvation before something else? Or simply dying on the battlefiels? Where does the chart come from? Is your conclusion sound? Cheers! :)

    • @thatonepolishguy3773
      @thatonepolishguy3773 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Of course they died of different causes. Starvation, freezing, repressions, executions itd. Also food shortage influenced their diet. I am certain that anybody during that time would pay a lot for some meat.
