I'm dreading the day where I go to the next family party (who of which are ALL FILIPINO WHO WILL BE INSULTED IF YOU DO NOT EAT) and I am not looking forward to tell them I am Vegan...-ish. And I say "ish" because I am in the military and our combat boots are made of leather and I of course joined the military before I went vegan...

I was the same, then found Dr Greger's 'How not to die' translated into Swedish. Bought it, read and then lend it to my parents saying that they can choose to do whatever they like, but just do me the favour and read these few chapters... after two chapters that I picked for my mom of 69 who's been eating meat 5-7 days a week her entire life said: "I'm going to be a vegetarian!". Kid you not :)
If it isn't available in your language, perhaps there is another very good book out there. This one has been by far the best one I've read though when it comes to convincing people that an unrefined vegan diet is vastly superior in every way. Even I who already knew that learned a lot of from it. Based on study, upon study, upon study - so no one can say it's biased.
      Good lucky Valeri!

It's incredibly annoying when people say they tried "_the_ vegan diet" for two weeks, then had a burger or piece of poultry at the end and decide that veganism is just "not for everyone", "incompatible with their body" and go on about how necessary animal protein is.
What do you even say to that? You say they're full of shit, they complain about vegans being mean, you say nothing and they keep on thinking such nonsense, you try to gently correct them and they get ultra defensive while digging their heels in deeper.
Also, I like how even though you revisit a lot of the same topics you still manage to find a way to incorporate new infirmation and try to approach the subject from different angles. Keep it up!

Two last fun facts. One, Meat products are higher in the Amino Acid Methionine. While it is an essential Amino Acid, your body can only handle so much at one time, so it breaks it down. This break down leads to higher levels of Homocysteine which damages your arteries. Thus being a risk factor for heart disease. Two, Methionine also aids in the growth of cancers. Cancer cells have a high Methionine requirement. Would you like to feed cancer cells or starve them?

I will never stop saying it. You're one of the best WFPB youtubers out there. So genuine and simple to follow. Could you make a video about eating animal products once in a while? I know Dr. Greger has some information about it on his website and mentions it in his talks but I haven't found an appropriate video to share with my family, they mainly eat WFPB but still eat animal products in small quantities, I know it stiffens their arteries everytime and it increases the risk of diseases, but should I worry?

    • @consciousconscience7496

Conscious Conscience I'm with you on this 100% , but this is a philosophical point of view. I, like you, see the wrong in killing an animal for pleasure food.
But take my brother for example. He's older than me, I always looked up to him, he's a very wise person and is improving everyday. I've been WFPB vegan for only 4 months and he still sees it as a moment in my life where I'm just trying something extreme. I know I'll stay this way to the end of my life but I can't exclude what he is saying because I've felt this way about other things in the past and have been wrong some times. He i knows about the environmental impacts as well, but since he consumes meat once or twice a week he feels he's doing his fair share and at the same times consumes a "balanced" diet.

My non-vegan cousin lives with a vegan, but because the vegan he lives with is short and skinny, he thinks he can't become buff on a vegan lifestyle. And the vegan he lives with don't even think he gets all the amino acids from his own vegan lifestyle either. They need this video. I just wished it had Norwegian subs so they could understand it more, as I'm afraid their English isn't quite advanced enough for all of this. But thanks Mic, I'll try to translate the best I can for them.

Tons of English Language Jon Venus, Vegan Gains, Nimai Delgado, Hench Herbivore, Vegan Physique, Clarence0, The Glucose Network, Mind n Muscle, Thomas Tadlock, Ryan Nelson, Barney Duplessis Subscribe him to these people, sit back and wait for the doubts to disappear :) He doesn't need to understand what they are saying per say. Someone recently tried to explain to me that people need heme iron. Otherwise, you will be anemic. Unclear why he was so certain in his assertion when there are so many healthy vegans (including vegan athletes). He explained that the anemia would show up on "deeper tests" without any evidence that these "deeper tests" exist (they don't) or why he would assert such a thing.
Someone also tried to explain that animal proteins and vegetable proteins are processed by the body differently, and that plant proteins lack many essential amino acids that you get from animal proteins. He asserted confidently that I was slowly killing myself by not eating animal based proteins, and that he knew that because of Science.
They are so confident of nonsensical things.

Whats your take on coconut milk/coconut cream? Or even coconuts in general. The fat composition of a coconut per 100g is
    Total Fat 33 g
    Saturated fat 30 g
    Polyunsaturated fat 0.4 g
    Monounsaturated fat 1.4 g
Although it has 9g of fibre per 100g, and contains vitamins, minerals and some great phytonutrients I imagine. But still, that's quite a bit of saturated fat..

I stopped buying meat after reading Diet For A Small Planet. After more than 30 years of not eating meat, I seem to be doing quite well. I can outperform, on a bicycle, most of my carnivore friends. My weight has never been above normal for my height. Decades ago, when I started my meatless trek, I was concerned about protein. I have learned that protein is easy to come by in the plant world, after decades on not eating meat. The only thing that is a requirement, if you go on a plant based protein, is to take a vitamin B12 pill. You can get those at the grocery store. It's much easier now a days to be a vegan or vegetarian. Back in the early 80's, there were much fewer offerings, in terms of things like veggie burgers, and other meat free products. Now is a great time to ditch the meat habit. Do yourself a favor, and be kind to animals (after all, you love your dog or cat, and all other animals are similar, especially mammals.) Stop buying meat (which in itself is a vote for cruelty to animals.) Don't support a cruel industry, and give yourself the gift of good health. Exercise and eat a GOOD plant based diet, and you'll reap the rewards, especially years down the road.

Hey Mic, have you made a video on plant-based diets for dogs yet? (Sorry, I looked but I couldn't find one). I recently got into it with someone when they claimed dogs couldn't be healthy on a vegan diet and that it was abuse. I researched it and could only find a single peer-reviewed study implying the exact opposite: that domestic dogs have evolved to thrive on a starch-based diet and can be perfectly healthy without meat.
Since many vegans have canine companions, I'd like to know what you think. Cheers!

I was vegan for about a month-and-a-half before I got pregnant. No one I know is vegan so I pretty much had to try and figure out everything on my own (watched a lot of videos, bought some books, etc). I was still learning a lot and making some mistakes. I was trying to figure out which vegan "diet" was the right one for me because there are so many out there and so many arguments for each. I was really uneasy about making such a drastic diet shift while pregnant. What if I didn't get the right nutrients? What if I did something wrong? And honestly it's been a major challenge to NOT eat meat this pregnancy because I crave protein soooo much (especially now that I just hit the 30 week mark in my pregnancy). And it's also a big challenge not to eat animal products when my husband literally freaks when I try to get him to try cruelty free options and not get him his usual food products (like milk, bacon, ranch dressing, and meats). He literally had several meltdowns over it, which made me feel defeated and like a horrible wife. And it got expensive having to buy groceries for 2 completely different diet types. Anyway... I'd really like to go back to being vegan after I deliver my baby girl, and I think it'd be great for her to be vegan as well (Ellen Fisher here on YT is a huge inspiration to me). Sigh... it's a bit exhausting to be vegan - so much judgement and so many challenges... and all because you want to eat plants instead of animal parts. What is wrong with society?

Hello mic. Fantastic video as always. I love how you show evidence for your claims rather than saying random information and preaching it like it's true like how some other vegan TH-camrs do. You have really helped me. I've been vegan for a couple of months now, and I was previously vegetarian for 6 months. Your videos are always my go to for vegan knowledge and I really appreciate that you care to share the knowledge with the rest of us. THANK you! And one more thing. Can you consider making a video in the future for people who are allergic to fruit and vegetables. One of my friends, who is also lactose intolerant, says she has to eat meat because when she eats raw fruits and veggies it has the same effects of her drinking milk. The only way she can eat f&vs is if she "drowns them in salt" even if she is cooking with them.

When I was eating meat I started feeling faint and sick all the time. The only way I could feel better was sugar, and occasionally if I ate meat. At first I thought it was protein too. I wasn't even near diabetic, my grandma tested me all the time whenever it happened, but I felt like falling over at the strangest times. It started at 14 and lasted years, until I was 27. The doctor(s) said it was a "hunger craving". I'd complain and they would look at me like I was crazy. Since going vegetarian, then vegan, that doesn't happen ever. Even if I don't eat. I don't eat sugar anymore unless it's fruit. I've learned it's what made me feel sick. I thought something was seriously wrong for a while. But I feel people call this "hungry" faint feeling a need for protein. At best it might be a craving for salt, not table salt stripped of all its nutrients but sea salt or hymalayan salt. At worst its a sugar addiction.

    Hey Mic
    Just like to add
I work calisthenic strength skills and when I switched to a vegan diet I was losing strength, thinking it's a problem that I was willing to accept to save lives and the planet......then I did some research, started eating more and bam, no problem.
I have noticed that my recovery is better now as a vegan and something strange that has never been mentioned (except by me), when I take time off training I don't lose my strength as fast anymore, somehow I keep my strength longer even without exercise.

Keep doing damn great activism for the animals!

Hi from the D.R. 🇩🇴 great video bro lots of important information for me since after having had become a vegan I’m still doing research to be more knowledgeable and take the most advantage of a healthy vegan diet without putting my self at risk of missing any vital nutrient that my body may need , it was also great to see and know that there’s scientific proof that if done properly you can obtain all the protein needed with all the essential amino acids with a plant based diet . Thumbs up 👍🏻 bro I’m subscribed now to your channel keep it up ...

Could you talk about l-carnitine in particular? I got the explanation by my health professional that although l-carnitine isn't an essential amino acid, it can't be made sufficiently by the body, so needs to come from food sources also, which would be found only in meat and dairy. I couldn't give any arguments to counter cause not many people mention this. I found some studies that said l- carnitine levels were indeed lower in vegans and vegetarians. I'm puzzled as I haven't heard this one before... Thanks!

Great that you shared your own hesitations and ignorance regarding a vegan diet. I think it's very helpful to people looking to get on board. Did you go straight to wfpb or did you have a "junk food" vegan period?

Is that "0.4Grams Protein per Lb" referring to lean body mass?
I'm a Big, Fat Vegan. I started at 346 lbs back in July and am down to 290 or so now. Do I need to Do I need to figure in the 100 lbs of excess fat I'm still hauling around into protein requirements?
Note: I just eat plants. I don't really bother with figuring out all the numbers. I eat enough legumes and dark greens that I'm not concerned, really. I'm just curious as to how the math works.

I feel into that frame of mind also. I went vegetarian 10 years before going vegan. I thought you needed some sort of animal protein to stay healthy. Then there was all the misinformation about compete proteins it sounded too complicated. Meanwhile i dealt with high cholesterol and pre hypertension. All gone now. Thanks for all you do!

Mic, what if you cover in one of your videos the absorption of macro and micro nutrients? I hear people arguing leafy greens do have more iron but you won't absorb as much as you would eating red meat, etc.
In the end you are not what you eat, you are what you absorb xD That's why chronometer isn't quite reliable

Hey Mic can you do a video explaining your troubles transitioning to a plant based diet? I can definitely relate and I feel like many more people can. Giving up dairy seems to be the hardest because its in sooo much food like even most tomato soups.

Agree, dairy is in SO MUCH packaged foods! The key is to eat more whole foods. I've been trying to make more salads and Buddha bowls but it's hard for me to maintain because I gravitate towards opening a package.
I know someone who does meal planning and batch cooking which seems like a good idea but I just put it off every weekend. I've also been considering a meal delivery service but I'm scared to commit.
Reading my comment, it's easy to make excuses. 😆

Awesome video. I've had someone tell me we require cholesterol because our body only make 75% of cholesterol we need so we need to eat animal foods. When I mentioned the president of the American College of Cardiology or that my cardiologist, for a birth defect, says the opposite that I should get a new cardiologist because he knows more than people who studied the heart.
