  • Will My $35 McCormick Hay Conditioner Make it Through 1st Cutting??
    With a short window of sunny weather in between all the rain, I am trying to get some first cut hay baled. I am using this McCormick No.2 hay conditioner to try to dry the hay as fast as possible.

    We always called ours, a crusher, but conditioner is the right name for it. Ya got a good buy on it.

    Great video! Thanks for the reminder to stop and soak it in when the weather is good and the haying is going well. Getting exactly the rainy weather you’re describing here in MA - it’s so hard to remember to live in the moment when things are managing to go well. Thanks for sharing!

    Thanks for the video, good idea Mr.Chris to hit it twice however what you have there is a "crusher" NOT a crimper. A crimper has intermeshing steel rolls. Farm safely my friend.

      Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing crimper rolls on a new mower and they are just as you described. Thanks for watching!!

    About 15 or 20 years ago, the big hay experts decided that reconditioning made a big difference. There are companies that make hay macerators. Most have 2 sets of conditioners in them.. very expensive machines!
    I always figured a good old conditioner, or an old haybine without the sickle or discs.. just the conditioner.... would work great.

      I bet you're right- get an old haybine and remove everything but the conditioning rolls. Would be cheaper than buying new! Thanks Ed 🙂

    Get that thing on the H...😎. Crimper looks like it’s doing a good job...👍

      I thought about using the H, but the narrow front will smash my windrow making it harder for the conditioner to pick it up. It did work well! Thanks 🙂

    If I had to guess I would say mid to late 60s. I remember a used New Idea conditioner in my area around the early 70s. About the same time guys started using crimpers on alfalfa in the neighborhood.
    I think it's unique. Thank you Chris.

    You know what. I have an old 2A I think it is, I’m not sure since the decals are peeled off but anyway. I took the rollers off and put a new one with blades on it so it acts as a muncher for my fields. Pretty darn dangerous though

    When I was a kid, the neighbors had an old conditioner parked in the woods, their bone yard.
    I always wanted to drag it out and make it work..
    Antique tractors and antique rakes to come...lol. thank you Chris!

    I have one just like it and I use it all the time to double condition my hay.
    If you notice when you raise it the roller separate to unplug it
    I double crush behind the haybine

      Glad to hear there is another one of these still out there in the field! I did notice they separated when it was lifted, but didn't really think about it. But what you said makes perfect sense. Thanks!!

    A friend of mine ran his hay through a crusher to. Now he runs his hay through his discbine twice. I have gone over a field twice with my discbine before, but not to often. I prefer to ted 3 or more times to dry hay. Thanks for sharing

      I guess the idea of double crimping must work well then if he goes through that trouble- and that's good to hear! Thank you Monty!!

    Man yeah Mr Chris, pennies on the dollar conditioner 😁😁 I can understand what you mean on the beautiful days being fsr between and the rain. I hope to cut this afternoon myself, such a gamble with pop up showers but it is what it is honestly. Really cool to see your daughter out there helping and enjoying the 544!! Very cool to stop and enjoy things like that, and yes they grow up too fast! My youngest will be married in October, at 22 . Sure makes a man feel old! Hope the weather holds out for you sir, and things go well! Looking fwd to the raking videos for sure!! 👍😁😁🇺🇸🇺🇸

      I've been feeling older and older... My daughter is 16 and driving now. I really enjoy my time with the kids helping- they still enjoy doing it for now 😂 The weather is driving me nuts! At a certain point you just have to cut and whatever happens, happens. There won't be a nice second cut it first cut doesn't get off the field. What day in October did they pick?

      @dehavenfamilyfarm  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Pennies_on_the_dollar I'd go as low as $49.95, but that's it 😁

      @@dehavenfamilyfarm Yes sir, I know exactly!! I cherish the days of teaching her the the ropes on a tractor at the farm! I totally understand on the weather, y'all sure haven't had a good run at it!! That's awesome she still is out helping!! October the 14th, pretty special my dad's birthday and mine is following on the 25th 😁😁

    The Kuhn MoCo we just traded had the rubber rollers (4 of them). One was separating and was gonna cost $3,900 for just one. I hope that $35 don’t end up costing you $3,935 😂! Looks like a good old unit.

    • @dehavenfamilyfarm
      @dehavenfamilyfarm  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, those are pricey!! I am really surprised that these rollers are in such good shape for the age of the unit. Thanks!

      Those crushers were built to last. We have one and paid a $100 for it. A little oil and some grease and it works just like a brand new $35,000 unit. We may not have the "NEW" braggin rights, but we get the wow, thats old and still works like new braggin rights. 😂
