    Very interesting to me, never seen it heard of a tester doing it other than a bale stab! Thank you for the great explanation and test procedure!! Gotta be an awesome feeling after the season you have had, for something to work out that normally wouldn't! Great job Mr Chris, I'm looking fwd to the raking and baling as well!! Thank you for bringing us along!!!

      It definitely was nice to have 5 dry days in a row. That didn't hardly happen at all this year! Thanks Nelson 🙂

    Awesome Chris, your plan works out, making hay in November, that is now a good deal, nice tester

      For one time this year something actually worked out 🤣 Thank you my friend 🙂

    It would seem to me your hay might actually dry faster in a windrow. If you are having dew or frost, there would be less exposed surface area for the new moisture to accumulate. I suspect you might start with a little less moisture per pound of grass each morning, and the dew/frost would lift off the upper surface just as fast. Please know you have probably bailed a lot more hay than eye, and you are bailing a different grass in a different location.

    Handy moisture tester for hay. Thanks for sharing. Take care.

    Thats a pretty cool testing tool!

    You want undisturbed hay for testing. Making a pocket or hole for the probe reduces the contact area of the probe point and thereby raises the Ohms reading that converts to % moisture in the instrument. You get false low moisture readings by doing this. (Higher ohms = dryer hay)

    Well Chris, seems like you're gonna have a little work ahead of you. Thanks for showing how moisture meter works in hay and how you do the measurement. have a fine week. 👍🏽🙂

    The hay is doing great! Around here, it would still be like a fresh salad. Way too much frost & dew to dry decent. Might get it dry enough to chop. Looking forward to your next vid to see how it turns out. Regards!

      Normally I wouldn't even try for hay in November, but we had this one dry, decently warm spell. Thanks! 🙂

      I never had one until about 5 years ago when it became difficult to dry hay. We always seem to be right on the edge of it being dry enough, so this really helps to figure out how much preservative to apply. Glad you stopped by 🙂

    How do you know that you are applying 40lbs of force? Is there a meter on the tester for this?

  • @LVFFarmVlogs

    Tough time of year to make dry hay! 15.8% and 14.5% seems pretty good!

      @dehavenfamilyfarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Extremely tough. This is the first time I have made hay in November. I am quite surprised at how well it dried! Thanks Brad 🙂

  • @chargermopar

    I keep forgetting there are places that are not 80 degrees year round. Still baling in November. The moisture testers I remember were a two prong stab it in system.

    • @dehavenfamilyfarm
      @dehavenfamilyfarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, we are blessed with long cold winters here 😂 This tester is very handy to help find out moisture before baling.

  • @GerraldFarms
    @GerraldFarms 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It sounds dry. lol. That tester seems finicky. I saw on here someone used a wood moisture tester. So I got one seems to work good. Just grab a hand full of hay twist it then test.

  • @Theblindfarmer
    @Theblindfarmer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    👍👍👍👍 was that tester spendy and accurate for the most part ??

    • @dehavenfamilyfarm
      @dehavenfamilyfarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't remember the cost because I bought it about 5 years ago. It has always seemed to be close in its accuracy. Hope you got unstuck 😉

  • @GosselinFarmsEdGosselin
    @GosselinFarmsEdGosselin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It sounds dry, and the tester said it is... But that can all change once it's in the bale.
    Should make some nice hay!!!
    Thanks for the video Chris

    • @dehavenfamilyfarm

    I've always wondered how you use those windrow testers

    • @dehavenfamilyfarm
      @dehavenfamilyfarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I find it more useful than the bale probe style. It allows for better planning and preparation before you bale. Thanks!

  • @michiganhay7844
    @michiganhay7844 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    OK I guess I’m not gonna go ahead and buy one of those moisture testers course when you compress everything in a bale you’re going to get a drastically different reading aren’t you?

    • @dehavenfamilyfarm
      @dehavenfamilyfarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe slightly, but if you use this windrow tester correctly it tells you to fill the bucket up enough to be able to push the tester in with 40 pounds of force. I think it gets the reading pretty close from what I can tell. I have a bale probe moisture tester so maybe I will make a video showing testing a bale after it's baled 🙂
