The first time I saw Metallica in 1986, I was shocked. These guys were downright scary af. 80’s Metallica will never be surpassed. I say this even though I’m a bigger Slayer fan.
I saw them at this VH Monsters of Rock. They should have been last band on before VH. They sold more merchandise then all other bands combined. After their set everyone on upper level grabbed full garbage can and held them over the sides onto the crowds below. On Masters in middle when James sang Master the crowd was so loud it echoed from one side to other. One of their best performances I have seen them play
METALLICA! Every time I feel more in this video that hetfield looks like a caged lion just released and the blade of his machine gun and guitar seems, kirk! perfect playing songs all songs and if you look how they move in perfect sync scenario when playing guitar solos one leaves then leaves the other fully synchronized and professionals. Imaginenese as play now after thirty years is something that you can not believe .... well ... something Tallica!! is the most important in the face of the earth band and playing metal alike have become the best .. this is the proof that is needed to play pop to be the best, metallica thanks for all your music and for creating this important precedent that can and the metal in the ass
This show- Monsters of Rock at Giants stadium, NJ was the first concert I ever attended. I was still in high school then. Had the general admission tickets on the field. Fond memories. Thanks for putting this up.
I wish I was born in the 70's so I could have the chance to see all these amazing bands on their prime. Metallica was a fucking raw force of nature in those years
Was also there, upper deck in the sun in the back. Had a friend from college that was with us who was really into them. I could not believe how the stands emptied out and poured into the field (can’t see this from the camera angle here). 20000 people banging their heads. Totally unreal. Guys were stealing the toilet paper and towels from the bathrooms and launching them on stage. I think the massive food fight that erupted was right after this. I saw the first beer fly from the section next to me. Within minutes thousands of drinks, hot dogs and other oddities rained down on those folks in the “better” seats.
was there up front... us two! getting wet on a day that will live on as one of the HOTTEST days ever. the water didnt help one bit! lol long live Metallica and JAMES...whew... that voice and craziness :) love

+RickGrimes41 it is true :-) one thing I noticed straight away was how fast they were playing,it seemed like they were playing faster then the records anyway.
Need proof. Post link to an imgur link with a photo of you at the concert or at least some time around 1988 to know you really were there. We're also going to need a time stamp with the date next to the photo with the current date to know its actually you.
13:42 is that a pyrotechnic going off or did Lars just decide that was the absolute perfect time to hit his snare the hardest he ever has in his entire life? Haha
I wish James still sang these songs in concert the same way today. It seems like after the Black album came out, he lost that rawness. He tries to sing the old stuff as if it was on the Black album.
James’ voice was just as good or even better than 1987-1989 in the first shows after the black album in 1991. Just listen to Harvester Of Sorrow or Sad But True in Moscow 1991
Awesome. These poor quality videos are a 100% times more inspiring and astonishing than all the shit the put out nowadays recorded with the best technology.
Check out Master Tape Theater channel on TH-cam. Lots of amazing info how many of the late 70s and 80s concert bootlegs were recorded, lot of great stories from the filmers.
Think that is George Lynch of Dokken at the side of the stage watching as these guys take the stage. This tour did two days at the Akron Rubber Bowl just before going to Jersey. Dokken immediately followed Metallica and crowd booed Dokken and yelled for Metallica to come back out. It was 120 degrees on the field in Akron. I was there both days, they were using garden hoses to cool us down all afternoon. Lots of folks passed out where the hoses did not reach. Metallica and the Scorpions rocked. Kingdom Come, Dokken and Van Hagar not so much.
@todd long well the guy was there in person, you just watched on the tube, he should know. Also many people that were there posted here and said the same exact thing, go read it. Dokken who? Metallica, oh yeah, the biggest metal band in the world! Deal, they were booed.
it's kinda cool in a way that they went on before dokken. It gave them a good opportunity to show they could hype the hype up a crowd more then a more well known commercial band
Dokken were pretty damn good man... They weren't actually a hair metal band, you know that right... And there had to be a reason why in 1988 Metallica were actually opening for them.
I'm 49 and got to go to 4 of the their shows! 2 "Justice for all" shows and 2 "Black" albumn shows! Ears rang for 2 days after each time? Clear and fucking loud!!!!
I was at the show! I also was at the show in Roseland the night they got signed to a Electra Records! Being friends with the misfits and Glenn Danzig me in the bass player eerie Von were backstage at a Metallica show and I told him that I was at the night Roseland!! They consider that an historic night!
This video is magic. Is the Hetfield presence most known (AJFA & Black album) but in 1987!!! I’ve just seen old concerts to see the transition. Until Cliff’s dead, James had a more standing posture, but a lot of headbanging in the only guitar parts, almost a child. Just after Cliff’s dead, with Jason, his posture laid down, leg opened, less headbanging but more aggressive presence, more angry. And now I see this concert, with the iconic moustache and beard, and it’s the Hetfield we all know!!! Awesome!!!
Thank you so much for this, great quality too. A family member and his significant other went to the Los Angeles Coliseum show. I can still remember them the next day whining almost verbatim "Everyone tore up the seats and rushed the stage when a band called Metallica came on." I would do a lot do to go back in time to any one of these summer of 1988 Monsters of Rock shows just to see Metallica. Most seem to agree this was the time period that allegedly the "And Justice For All" album was done and being mixed with Jason's bass getting tweaked down.
I was at that show. I wasn't there to see them, that's for sure, and never really became much of a Metallica fan, but it's still cool to think how badass they were back then.
Lol... i can't believe i found this video. I was at this show, and it was the craziest thing I ever saw. Toilets being blown up, and the water cascading down the stairs from the rafters... people dumping coolers of water (and coolers) on the lower tiers...and seeing all of giant stadium yell "seek and destroy" at the same time... you can hear it on the video, but it was insane in person. Classic!
One day before this they played in Portland. It’s a shame that wasn’t recorded. I live in Maine and there’s not many metal heads around but still this is a good show
+Greg Silva I agree with you it lacks vibe ..but it got me thinking ...maybe there is NO CROWD , and this is just a mock up ,like the moon landing and the band just have a mirror in front of the stage and fake roadies and passes etc I would like to SEE this so called audience not these faked overdubbed noises .good point
The Real Deal. How well I remember this tour! but thank you thank you for posting this...there is nothing like hearing it again...the aggression and pure awesomeness of Metallica back when they were METALLICA!!!
The second night of opening weekend of the Monsters of Rock tour was the second show I saw live (Rush was the first). I went there primarily to see Van Halen, and to a lesser extent the Scorpions, but Metallica blew me away with their performance. There was something entrancing about 30K fans at Alpine Valley screaming "MASTER MASTER!"
I was at this concert tour at The Miami Orange Bowl Stadium, FL - 3 weeks before this one you guys had in New Jersey/ NY at the Meadowlands in E. Rutherford. I was just 15 y.o. & having a blast. First in line at the gate when they opened em up in the morning. My friends that I went with & I ran across the empty but, quickly to be packed football field & snagged a spot right on the wall at center stage before the "first row" was unattainable. A couple hours passed as the field & stadium seats filled-up & until the first band came on stage. After that 1st lame opener band, Kingdom Crotch, or whatever their name was, ended their set & the stage hands were doing their changeover for Metallica, the anticipation of all those months (years actually, bc it was the first-ever Metallica concert in S.Florida) of waiting by the fans turned physical before the band even took the stage. The moments just prior to the first guitar chord strike on "Creeping Death", it was all pushing, shoving & trying to remain standing - as that whole front-of-stage crowd was like a moving can of sardines. Locked-in shoulder to shoulder, with a sway and weaving you could neither deny or control. You were moving with the crowd wether you were willing or not. At the moment they did walk out, starting the first song, it immediately turned into survival of the fittest. Fists swinging, boots kicking & dust blinding. My friends' girlfriend was right next to me one moment, then got tripped. I saw her go down, reaching for her extended hand but missed it and she was swallowed up into the crowd like like a ship sunken at sea. I never saw her again until hours later in the night while Van Halen (4 bands later) was in the middle of their headlining act! Haha, she was ok though - no worries... Great memories still to this day, at 48 years old in 2021. I've seen another You Tube video of the Miami show I was at but, it wasn't the entire Metallica set. It was most of it though. Whoever brought their camcorders to these concerts and posted them for people like me to see, THANK-YOU for helping me re-live the memories! 🤘😎🎸👍🥁🎶🏟️ CHEERS! 🤟🥴👉🍻👈😅

On Masters in middle when James sang Master the crowd was so loud it echoed from one side to other. One of their best performances I have seen them play
Was at this show.... Never forget this entire concert! Great day and night.... Thanks for posting!!
Lucky!!!
Me too was insane people rushing in and parking lot was crazy I barely survived 😂
What were the other highlights? I've seen Dokken's set from this package, but they were imploding at the time.
When Metallica was larger than life itself true rock stars.
Metallica forever the only One king
AMAZING SHIT ;)
LIVE SHIT! :D
Liberteh BINGE AND FUCKIN PURGEEE
***** wich is the song of the intro?
wweghostpr60 creeping death
wweghostpr60
Milanicachannel's intro is Suicide & Redemption (instrumental) off of Death Magnetic.
NEVER SEEN ON TH-cam, except for the 232,283 people who have now seen it on TH-cam.
This show- Monsters of Rock at Giants stadium, NJ was the first concert I ever attended. I was still in high school then. Had the general admission tickets on the field. Fond memories. Thanks for putting this up.
same, my mom took me when i was 14, most memorable show ever!! Van Halen ruled too!
My friends stayed in the parking lot drinking and I went in alone. I still bust their chops on this killer show they missed.
What a bunch of dumbasses lol
I was there!!!! Metallica was friggin awesome that day!
The absolutely best of them in their Prime , The Catalog, The Prime of their Youth.... UNTOUCHABLE........
I wish I was born in the 70's so I could have the chance to see all these amazing bands on their prime. Metallica was a fucking raw force of nature in those years
Yes, it was amazing sight and sound to behold. I'm glad I had the experience.
I was at this show. It was so much fun. Metallica will always be the best metal band to me
Was at the show!! Really hot that day!
The person recording had a pretty decent camera for 1988
No,no... it was a timetraveller...
100 degrees in Akron Ohio on 6 23 1988 awesome epic fuckn day it was I was 14.
I hear you. Got a bad sunburn myself.
Within minutes thousands of drinks, hot dogs and other oddities rained down on those folks in the “better” seats.
this is the Metallica when they started, They started from something like nothing.. they thrive and became famous and best metal band!
Wow... What a performance man, is 2020 and Metallica still giving me a lot of energy
sorry...I've seen now on TH-cam
Well done!! THAT'S what a bootleg should be-sound nice and raw!!
Pretty amazing footage. I was at the L.A. Coliseum show where the riot broke out. This is pre Justice. Awesome!
was there up front... us two! getting wet on a day that will live on as one of the HOTTEST days ever. the water didnt help one bit! lol long live Metallica and JAMES...whew... that voice and craziness :) love
James voice here in its prime.
1989 was even better bro
almost!! '89-'93 was James vocals at their best imo
Caleb Bartlett yep, i love the screaming :))
I agree. James had the best vocals in '88.
DiabolousSpiritus his ”black album voice” as you called it is alot better than his master of puppets voice
I miss this era of Metallica!🤘🏻🔥🔥🔥
Saw them last month in Detroit, never realized they intro with ecstasy of gold since back then…saw them in 88, 91 and 2023… they are getting even tighter and a 35 song greatest hits catalogue now!
1:04:28 Hetfield smashes the guitar on the stage. lol
I wish I was around when this band was in their prime.
THANK YOU for posting this! I've been looking for a Monsters bootleg forever. At least since I was at the show. Maybe longer... 😂
DAMN they were on fire back then!
5:16 Dave trying to get back to metallica
😆🤣😂
when James sang with power and sounded bad ass and Lars could play drums.
I was there,so loud ,so epic
If that's true, you are very lucky
+RickGrimes41 it is true :-) one thing I noticed straight away was how fast they were playing,it seemed like they were playing faster then the records anyway.
that always happens
Me too
Need proof. Post link to an imgur link with a photo of you at the concert or at least some time around 1988 to know you really were there. We're also going to need a time stamp with the date next to the photo with the current date to know its actually you.
2:10 I was like what is James doing over there and not on stage wtf?!?!
I think i'm gonna take back my black elastic jeans from de depths of my wardrobe...
Nah, you really shouldn't. Leave them there...or burn them. Nobody wants to see anybody wearing that shit..
...you're welcome.
@@m.c.ruckus2032 hahah, why shouldn't I ? Did you have a bad experience wearing them?
I watch this over and over. This is their most ferocious. Hungry AF.
This is fucking FIERCE yo
13:42 is that a pyrotechnic going off or did Lars just decide that was the absolute perfect time to hit his snare the hardest he ever has in his entire life? Haha
sounds like both lmao
I wish James still sang these songs in concert the same way today. It seems like after the Black album came out, he lost that rawness. He tries to sing the old stuff as if it was on the Black album.
James’ voice was just as good or even better than 1987-1989 in the first shows after the black album in 1991. Just listen to Harvester Of Sorrow or Sad But True in Moscow 1991
I’m pretty sure he learned to sing to keep from blowing out his voice
Awesome. These poor quality videos are a 100% times more inspiring and astonishing than all the shit the put out nowadays recorded with the best technology.
Jorge Sampayo Yep! They were young, pissed off with something to prove! And they did it every stop on this tour!!👍🏽😎
Check out Master Tape Theater channel on TH-cam.
Lots of amazing info how many of the late 70s and 80s concert bootlegs were recorded, lot of great stories from the filmers.
16:50 just imagine James face
Seriously, imagine that moment in front row
James was so badass and still very into and loving what he was doing, you can just tell!
And after this, the audience had an hour of Dokken. Hahaha
hahahahahahahaahahahahahaha lool, basically an hour to go for a beer
it's kinda cool in a way that they went on before dokken. It gave them a good opportunity to show they could hype the hype up a crowd more then a more well known commercial band
Metallica fans got pissed off at Dokken and threw stuff at them, probably because George Lynch made Kirk look like an amateur.
@@@mitchmclean3898:
George Lynch > Kirk Hammett
but
Metallica > Dokken
Dokken were pretty damn good man... They weren't actually a hair metal band, you know that right... And there had to be a reason why in 1988 Metallica were actually opening for them.
I'm 49 and got to go to 4 of the their shows! 2 "Justice for all" shows and 2 "Black" albumn shows! Ears rang for 2 days after each time? Clear and fucking loud!!!!
Imagine how awesome it must have been to hear harvester of sorrow for the first time at a metallica concert like that.
I was at the show! I also was at the show in Roseland the night they got signed to a Electra Records! Being friends with the misfits and Glenn Danzig me in the bass player eerie Von were backstage at a Metallica show and I told him that I was at the night Roseland!! They consider that an historic night!
+Larry McNeil dude that's fucking awesome
+Fearpocalypse my band at the time,Sardonica , Open for the misfits in Europe! Just punch my name up in TH-cam and you can see the videos!!
We talked for days after waiting for the album release ps I was deaf with whiplash literally hot 🥵 af that day
Cool af to see that
Would LOVE to get a copy of this show without your logo all over the screen!
I saw this tour 12 days later and I became a Metallica fan at it.
Lars WTF, you were soooo fucking insane!
Awesome!!!
This would’ve been good for their “Justice” boxed set!
I remember him saying we're going to play some new shit and they played harvester of sorrow!!
2:16
Younger james were watching the show
29:51 Kirk dodge a toilet paper...
That ending on Harvester is great- I don’t think I’ve ever heard that anywhere else.
1988 When Metallica ruled the world an heavy music scene...
I was at that show. I wasn't there to see them, that's for sure, and never really became much of a Metallica fan, but it's still cool to think how badass they were back then.
@ 25:24 notice that Harvester of Sorrow had a different ending back before it was officially released... Interesting...
Not a different ending, just a live thing a lot of bands do to make the live performance a little more interesting
1988 Alpine Valley. East Troy Wisconsin ✌️✌️✌️
A band that has left a mark on thrash metal
Lol... i can't believe i found this video. Classic!
59:44 I love how he still does that yell to this day 😂
One day before this they played in Portland. It’s a shame that wasn’t recorded. I live in Maine and there’s not many metal heads around but still this is a good show
i cant believe the one who was recording didnt show the crowd once
Why would they? They're there for Metallica, not the fucking audience.
+zog noty No i dont, but i think the massive crowd going absolutely crazy at certains moments worths a shot
+Greg Silva you see it in master of puppetts the fuck you talkin bout boi
The Real Deal. How well I remember this tour! but thank you thank you for posting this...there is nothing like hearing it again...the aggression and pure awesomeness of Metallica back when they were METALLICA!!!
Bravo for the upload, really rare and nostalgic!!!
Was this their first time playing 'Harvester'?
Yes.
schnitzjr Hello
It's really weird not hearing the "HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY!" during the intro
No
No, first time in 23 may 1988
The second night of opening weekend of the Monsters of Rock tour was the second show I saw live (Rush was the first). I went there primarily to see Van Halen, and to a lesser extent the Scorpions, but Metallica blew me away with their performance. There was something entrancing about 30K fans at Alpine Valley screaming "MASTER MASTER!"
RAWEST METAL EVER.
Now you see why the Metal scene died...what group could follow up these guys? Pantera got close...Slipnot tried..then the scene caved in...
What planet are you from? Metallica are the most overrated bunch of pussies ever.Megadeth make these guys look and sound like a pub band! ha ha
You to dig around, there are fantastic bands today, but there's not one band that carries the flag, but several.
Damir Nugaev
I'm just giving my opinion buddy! MegadetH wipes the floor with Metallica :)
opinion lolwut? "Worst metal band ever..Dickhead." how about this one?
david kiernan
cock sucker wtf even Megadeth knows that metallica was better...
🤘😎🎸👍🥁🎶🏟️
CHEERS! 🤟🥴👉🍻👈😅
I was there! Metallica blew the other bands off the stage!!
I saw them on this tour for the first time. They ruled the day as far as im concerned!
Scorpions were pretty damn good that day.
Saw them at Louder than Life 2021, blew out all the other bands
at this in Alpine Valley, 1988....wow, the memories
This was my first concert ever!
Lucky ass, I bet you didn't realize the significance huh? I wouldn't of either I'm sure. I would definitely had a good time though.
@@metalmellie4371 how much would you like to bet?
@@homicidal1 so you realized!AWESOME! Wish I'd been there!
Ah... this is back when i saw them a half dozen or so times idk i was so high back then LOL. back when they were truly Metallica.
