In fairness, I would say that within reason it doesn't matter which camera anyone uses, it's how it is used and how the story is told through the edit, but if it really matters to you to know then I use up to four Canon XF300 camcorders, go pro 4, sony action cam, DJI Osmo. Thanks. Yes of course, 'how the story is told' is very important. I really like the tv-style transition edits showing flora & fauna etc, but i asked because the video quality is very crisp/detailed with whatever cam & render compression you use. Very nice. Surprised the subscribe count isn't so high given Shakespeare's profile tbh. I'd personally like to see more videos NOT featuring a huge seat box & other 'pro' clobber that almost requires a helicopter drop to get to the bank; some good old fashioned light fishing, roving the bank etc like DomFishingUK does.

I live in the southeastern U.S. and really enjoyed watching your video. What caught my eye was the word "bream" in the title. We have a popular freshwater sunfish called a bluegill here that goes by the common name of "bream," although we pronounce it "brim." I've always wondered if early settlers here from your area of the world caught these bluegill, didn't really know what they were, just called them "bream" and the name lived on. In any event, I love fishing and learning about all types and techniques of angling. Thanks for the video.
I'd say there could be some logic in your thinking there since 'brim' is used in certain area of UK too! i like the look of those sunfish..do they fight hard?
They do fight hard. The world record is 4 pounds, 12 ounces, caught in Alabama in 1950. I assure you, that's a huge fish. It is common, at least in my part of the world, to catch them upwards of a pound or a maybe a little more. And that's considered a big fish. Ounce for ounce, they're probably the hardest-fighting freshwater fish I've encountered. If they grew as large as, say, a largemouth bass, it would take a bit more than a standard spinning rod/reel to fight them effectively. As you can imagine, on light spinning tackle or a light fly rod, they're a lot of fun to catch.

Great video, brilliant presenting and camera work. Please let's see more canal videos, would love to see one on the old Leeds Liverpool. I fished that canal back in the 80s when most matches you could catch 50lb of tench and still miss out on a top three. Another place I like to see is the Staffs canal stretch near Pendeford Wolverhampton that set the national canal match record a few years ago.

Some big bream up hatton locks. There is a back pound half way up the locks holds some really BIG bream fished there few years ago was FREE as well defo recommend if you live on the hatton park estate near there.
First time ever seeing this type of fishing. Guess, I am just a simple Yank. Great job, camera man.
catch and release mostly here in the UK, but can turn into a money pit. you need to pay the government £30 for a license to catch this type of fish for 12 months then you need to pay anything from £5 to £20 to fish the venue per day. and a pole like the one he is using can cost you anything from £100 for a cheap one to £1000+ for some to!

Wonder if James would like to try fishing the River Nene in Northampton Town ?, the area is Downstream of the Carlsberg Factory by the Town bridge on the public footpath . I once met the Great Ivan Marks here back in the 70s and from memory there used to be good Roach and Chub fishing on Hemp and Caster . Along a little way to the canalised section it is quite deep and anglers used to catch under thier rod tips . Further along past Beckets Park where the weir pool is before the ( WHAT USED TO BE ) the avon factory , nice bags of Chub could be caught on Hemp and Maggot/Caster . Should still be prolific in the right conditions .
Great video. I'm moving back home to my native Lymm very soon where I was brought up fishing the Bridgewater canal. This is inspiring and I can't wait to get back on there to try this style again.
I'd love to see JR do a video on fishing the very much forgotten whip. Somewhere in the depths of my brothers shed I know there is an old Shakespeare bleak whip (that had a Dacron tip), the most amazing bit of kit. I may even try and dig it out and do a video with it.

Another idea for JR would be the £99 challenge to set up a Junior with starter tackle.
I just priced a Sigma match rod, sigma supra 35 reel and beta box for £98. A little tweaking to add some terminal tackle bits and I think it would make a good video.
Now that's a proper seatbox. No plastic rubbish on the legendary ASI !
Chris A Yep it's 25 years old now and still going strong! I like using it for canal fishing and when fishing quick pleasure sessions😄
ShakespeareFishingTV I've always used an ASI. However, last year I purchased a top of the range RIVE which basically consists of a pole seat, footplate, one drawer and pole winder tray for £1200! A RIVE side tray, a few extra trays and drawer soon took the cost to 2k. I took the RIVE out that same evening of purchase for a short 3 hour local match, within that 3 hour period both drawer handles snapped and the backplate cracked! Also when I got the box home and gave it a wipe down I noticed some of the paint already coming off the footplate. All this after one 3 hour match on the same day I purchased the box!
I knew a guy in France who had a brand new ASI but was reluctant to sell it to me despite offering him double what they cost in the 90's. He did however agree to swap for the RIVE and all accessories. Now, my new ASI may have theoretically cost me 2k but at least I know it'll still be going strong in 25 years!

More river/canal/natural venues, anything that isn't catching carp on a commercial!
- A stalking/roving video on a small river like the Erewash or Chub Alley at Borrowash would be fun - I don't know if Chub Alley still exists, but when I used to fish there 10-15 years ago it was great.
- Rolling meat on the Trent for barbel
- Stick float/waggler fishing for chub and barbel - i know there have been a few of these in the past
- Doing something similar to the Jamie Hughes MAP videos where they film him through a match explaining how/why the approach changes
- Big bream fishing on a big res like Clumber Park or similar Estate lake
- Tench fishing
- A session at Moira canal
Maybe cover up some matches on rivers or natural venues. Giving us inside when to make what decisions.
From fishing the whip to feeder, pole , waggler.
Jimmy we may not cover matches because setting up the video equipment does put the other anglers on adjacent pegs off.

The European (common) bream is in the same family as carp and true minnows. The American bream/brim is in the sunfish family (with bluegill).

Here in the States, to my knowledge, we do not have the type of fish, you folks are calling bream. Over here, there are four or five types of sunfish / panfish which we refer to as bream. You are likely familiar with some of the species of sunfish or panfish we Americans call bream. It is likely to, that at least a few of the types of fish, we call bream, can also be caught in Parts of the British Isles. Are you familiar with Blue Gills, or perhaps the Pumpkin seed bream ?
As for the bream you caught in this vid; what family of fishes do they belong to ? Your bream fish, certainly do not look like they are even in the same family, as our US bream. Your bream look almost like a cross between some sort of Carp and the Tilapia ! Are your bream actually a type of Carp ? Are they native to England, or introduced from elsewhere ?
How much would an American tourist, be required to pay, for say, a 2 or 3 day, fresh water fishing permit in England ? Bet we are looking at 500 or more, USDs ?

Bream is a generic term for quite a few types of fish around the world which are definitely not related. Most live in salt water.
To fish in UK for a few days is cheap really...a one week duration rod licence is needed, plus a day ticket, so probably £20 in all depending on where you fish of course.

wait... you put them all back at the end? i don't understand... can these fish not be harvested for food? if so why keep them in a net at all? can any fish in the canal systems be kept as food? assuming someone would do a saltwater blanching to clean the fish before preparing to eat it.

the definitions of fish differ greatly from place to place . here in Georgia USA that would be called a sucker fish..a bream [brim] is similar to a bluegill..are there any croppy or crappy in England?
I cant believe an american watches this, this style of fishing couldn't be more different to what you would experience. The only fish we have here that maybe you could relate to are bass, carp. Roach (red fin) perch

Is it free to fish there? i got a fishing license from the government's website for fresh water fishing but not sure if it covers this canal to fish ?
No canal or river as such is free to fish, you either need to buy a licence from the club that owns the fishing rights or ger permission from them to fish. Be that a private club or the canal & river trust.
where can I get on this stretch specifically. I moved locally not to long ago, previously an addict on the Oxford and Cherwell. thanks
The best place would be to park in Hatton Railway Station carpark,I dont know if it's a pay and display though,you walk up the lane and there is a gate right opposite you,takes you down onto canal near the boat club,turn right for where the video was made,hope this helps

Hello Dan. These poles are as you can see take apart poles with different top 2/3 sections for different strength elastics threaded through. These elastics are balanced against line size [strength] used and target fish size. They vary from a few metres to 16m plus. The costs vary from a few £'s to upwards of 4-5 thousand £'s. The more expensive poles come with many different "top" sections and other accessories and of course are much lighter than their cheaper cousins. Hope this helps, Dave

It's hard to argue that these vids aren't worth 25p, but I'm not sure you'd get even 1/10th the views you get now were they behind a paywall - even one that's so cheap! I personally would have been very unlikely to watch them in the first place to realise I enjoy them if they were closed off in such a way. Perhaps a combination of both pay to view and free to view would be worth considering; maybe you could make it pay to view for a reasonable 50p a chuck for the first month after an episode is finished and after the month is up release it to the public for free as normal. That might combine the best of both worlds and still allow the series to be the wonderful instructional resource that it has been so far while being slightly more lucrative for yourselves.

Yes, sad really but you're probably right Ian. I was thinking of the computer games industry about 10-15 years ago; there were a few software companies that used a similar model for their downloadable content. Halo 2 was a notable one I remember, but I dont think anyone does this anymore and I suppose the market for these things is just a little bit different anyway, haha.

Hey Chris. In Europe people have caught these fish for 100's of years and it stands to reason when Europeans colonised America they caught fish that were similar in shape. So they called them Bream. They are of course not the same. It happened again in Australia with their "Bream".
