Thanks Jon lovely nostalgic video ,me and my mates used to spend all day and I mean all day dawn to dusk on our little canal catching some lovely perch ,when it started to get dark we caught some of the best coloured roach you could wish for on punch ,perch on red worm great video Jon very much appreciated , all best jon tight lines great memories I’m 71 now you never forget
Agreed... its amazing how many people fish a couple of foot in 5ft to 6ft plus of water and wonder why they arnt catching 🤣 I was between 5 and 6ft yesterday fishing tight to the bottom of my local canal on pole. Its the shallow section of the place I'm at too! People need to realise if you fish up in the water you gotta keep feeding regular .. try catch on the drop and bring the fish up in the water
Hi Jon what a wonderful video. These early morning sessions with the birdsong as background are unbeatable! For many anglers this type of waggler fishing is what they like and while the pole gives great presentation many still prefer using a rod and reel. I do hope you will post a whip fishing video as that is fishing at it's most simple basic form. Bill
@@JonArthur Hi Jon, thank you for the reply and l look forward to watching your take on the whip. I hope you and your family are staying well and you keep posting video's especially the early morning sessions, regards Bill
Good to see I’m not the only one who takes 10 times more kit than I’m ever going to use, even carrying broken floats lol. Great video as always. Thanks
Brilliant vid ! So underused nowadays. I still love fishing the wag on the Glos canal, not many do these days. I knew exactly what Dave Berrow float that was , still have one, and yes, it came free with the Mail :) . I commented a while ago on a James Robbins bodied wag fishing vid about how good it would be if float/wag only series/matches came about, similar to what has recently happened to feeder fishing ? It would be great to see a renaissance of the art . Tight lines !
Yea I agree I've been fishing this way all season on the Leeds Liverpool and Lancaster canals far Bank pint of maggots casters have caught loads roach skimmers perch hybrids a mirror carp about 6lb so much more enjoyable than pole fishing
Hi Jon , its about time to get back to what i call proper fishing , i'm sick to my teeth of carp fever i remember to catch a carp was a rare thing , BUT NOW !!, Thanks so much remembering the way we fished , ps love the vids you do , Regards Trev from Stoke

I love this video. I'm always a big fan of your videos, they are very cathartic and always so rich in technical details, but something about this video just always brings me back. It's got it all. Thanks for taking the time and effort to make it Jon. Hope you're well mate
had loads of tench on those caster waglers back in my time on my local lake fishing hemp and caster , double caster or double red maggot .... wow that has brought up some memories
Another great video mate love the tip about the silicon on the line under the shot , great to see someone taking the time to plumb the depth I think watercraft is a lost art . What a satisfying video to watch, proper angler fishing traditional ways and to top it all homemade floats, don't get better than this!
I really enjoy making my own kit and in this period of isolation it has been my only fishing - when one is dependent on local transport to get anywhere near fishable water my bankside experience is none. Thanks for the canal - it brought back many memories.
Old school fishing! We all grew up fishing places like that before the carp puddles came along I bet canals and rivers up and down the country will be like virgin waters now
Last year I hooked a fish on the Grand Union canal Greenford which after a fight snagged me on a sunken tree. The next day I went with stronger line - still only 3lb and managed to get it in. Was really surprised to see a big eel! It was really thick but managed to slip out of the net and back in the canal while I was faffing with the scales. Both times the swim went quiet before it bit. Can't say it was the nicest fish I've caught and impossible to hold! Great video by the way.
Great memories of learning to fish on the GUC on Luton ACs waters at Slapton and Cheddington. Learning to fish the waggler for everything from gudgeon to some fabulous roach and if you were really lucky a carp or two.
ahh that brings back some great memories of pre-pole canal days ..... that canal looks a great color.... a few of the canal boater channels i watch have been out and about but really just day trips so the canals look in great condition.... thanks for sharing your morning and bringing back some memories of happy canal days spent with my dad and my mates.... Lovely vid Jon. I grew up on the GUC just north of Milton Keynes. Mark Pollard mastered the waggler and squat method late 80s when opens drew 100+. I’ll take that fishing any day over a commercial
Hi mate... That's where I learned to fish with my dad..I still fish there alot and still produces..some huge carp in there now too. Regards Jase Shorthouse

Hi Jon, great to watch, waggler dishing is how most of us started many years ago! .... Would love to see one of your lockdown vids focusing on home made wagglers if poss?... Tips on materials/painting/sealing etc.... Thanks and staysafe.
Like a zoo in that canal, so many species. I've been slowly kitting myself out with quite a bit of Matrix tackle. But I'm a bit hesitant to buy rods and reels at the moment. I, like you, have been eyeing up the Cadence selection, with designs on getting a few of each over the next few years. I'm sold out on the idea of James, of a nice sum of money going to GHOF. Thoroughly enjoyed the video. You seem so much more relaxed when there's no pressure to win a match.
Just what you want on your last cast, an eel to make your landing net stink to high heaven! Great video. It's great fishing waters with hardly any carp in. You can fish with the finesse you need to catch quality fish without getting smashed up. Even if you land carp on light tackle, they frighten every other fish out of a swim you might have been building up for over an hour - and for what, another crappy four pound carp, just like a thousand others you've caught!
Enjoyable video Jon takes me back to when I was a kid never usually caught that many though 😂imagine what you would have had on the pole.Very enjoyable many thanks Richie 😎👍
Nice fishing Jon, I still have some very old canal darts, and some image wags. Use a very old Tom Pickering 11ft, only problem with it is the reel fittings/seats. They tend to come loose. So have to put inertube rubber over them. That rod you used looks just the job, but it’s a once a season or winter clear water item, for me now. Thanks for sharing and the memories 👍😎
Really enjoyed watching Jon. I definitely need to get out with waggler myself soon. Also hope you don’t mind me mentioning I have a fishing podcast called ‘middle aged angler reborn’ following my adventures. Cheers Jon and keep up the great vids 😊😊
Great memories, remember saving my pocket money to buy some Billy Makin canal greys to use on the Beeston Canal in Nottingham. Another thing, about time evening matches came back, bunk of work early for draw at 4.30, fish 5.30 to 8.30 then back at pub for 9 for a cold pint or three
This really has brought back memories of my time living in Leamington. In fact in the mid 80s I was the Secretary of the Leamington Liberals before I left for the Deep South and Phil took over. My son, Simon, used to fish Leamington Anglings junior evening matches so quite likely you were around as a sprog in those days. Maybe you also remember Ian Heaps who would come around encouraging the juniors and present the prizes for the Leamington Liberals. He was great with the youngsters some of whom were taller than he was.
I only fished the Liberals matches with Phil and Carl in charge, but once fished the Police Junior National further up at Crow Wood and Ian Heaps gave out the prizes. My brother got a DAM reel for a bream assisted 3rd! Also went to an Ian Heaps' roadshow at the Spa Centre!
Jon Arthur Angling My son,Simon, was second in the Police Juniors once and had his photo on the front of the Angling Times holding two canal bream. His claim to fame.
My favorite style of fishing by far!! Really nice footage Jon and even more early session on the bank. I use to use Kamasan Peacock Wagglers with a thin Insert. Looking quite as yours but no vintage at all 😉 enjoy your coming back on the match scene, see you in November hopefully... Stay safe my friend!
Brilliant , Love all your canal fishing vids Jon ..You've covered pole waggler and jigging small lures on canals , I know its not popular method on canals but it would be great if you did a vid covering small feeder fishing a canal .. be great to see how you approach it , tips and tactics. Cheers and tight lines
Making me think of the fishing from when i was a kid again .Im going to have a day on the Rea Brook and another below the wier in Shrewsbury where my dad taught me to fish.Really enjoyed these latest videos.
How we used to gish before the pole de-skilled canal anglers. The chub at Denham on the Grand Union used to be tight up against the far bank camp sheathing. A real challenge to get the right presentation whatever the conditions. Not a lot of anglers can do that these days. The long pole sucks.
I learnt how to use an elastic band to control the range before line clips were available on spools. Chucking 11-14m on the grand Union. Usually with a 2BB insert.
This is lovely. Its not always practical in a match, but waggler fishing is a great way to fish on a canal. I've still got my free Dave Berrow balsa waggler (with its tip intact). I like the old Drennan canal crystals. Btw, remember to tie your camera to something next time out.
I wish tackle companies would do more to promote the waggler fishing method. I feel that it’s a cheaper a more versatile method for beginners to use across a variety of venues including canals, commercials and rivers.
You'd laugh if you saw just how many whips I own. I've got loads! Even used to make my own ultra short 1-1.5m ones for gudgeon bashing. No gudgeon left any more in all my local cuts and too many bonus perch and bream about to risk using a whip on most canals I know anyway, unless you're just catching very little roach. But whip fishing on the river is something else and I still do that a bit!
A fun session that. Bit surprised to see you plumb up using the plummet, why not a big shot on the hook which might make less of a splash when you cast out? Like the home made peacock wagglers. Enjoyable video watch as always.
Cheers, I deliberately used the plummet as it gives a more positive reading and is much easier to swing the short distance and 'hold on to' plus it was a quick short session with minimal gear with me. If it was a bigger and wider expanse and more time to prep I have a pot of larger shot that I use instead. I actually pop a bait band in the slit of a AAA, SA or SSG.
Great to see, how I was taught, I haven't coarse fished for years but when I return I will be fishing this way. God knows what they do now and if I can even buy the tackle. we would fish for double Carp this way and did well. Im told fishing is very different these days? all bells whistles and catching paets in ponds? I wonder who can trot a sick float on a river for big Roach these days?
There's lots of good canal and river fishing sport to be had, but most of my rivers are too sluggish to run a stick float down most of the time, but a nice narrow pace river is still worth a bash. I like to mix things up so I like canals, lakes and rivers. It's all fun to me!
As a Grand Union (nr. Leamington) local guy canal angler, you'll love this true story = I got drawn on a mediocre peg in a 200 pegger open match I was near the viaduct , just above the lock on the Offchurch/Radford Road .. I thought I'd done ok, and maybe would win the section. But, 2 pegs away from me, a fella hooked & landed a 4 & a half pound Brown Trout! I saw him do it. He didn't cheat 😊.... a Brown Trout ffs! It might as well of been a Great White Shark, to be credible believable! ... The bugger done me in my section, and came 2nd in the match. But the stick he got then, and forever after, wasn't worth the cash in the brown envelope 😂. ... the good old funny days lol
Now that is very lucky for the guy who caught the trout and even unluckier for you! Most unusual thing I've caught is a kettle while lure fishing down Welsh Road! :-)
Great canal videos real nostalgic feel, one question where have all the gudgeon gone? Stretches that used to be full of them and they seem to have disappeared.
It's no coincidence that the perch, chub and zander have all got bigger. Sadly I think the days of big shoals of gudgeon in all my old canals are no more. Used to love catching them :-(
Great video Jon, nice to see an old traditional method being used, can you tell me when you plumb up on a waggler where on the float is it best to work to for your bait to sit stable on the deck, top of the body or on the float tip its self?
Why is your clutch set so loose for little silvers? It’d be great to get some shots of where the float is and the bites but you’ve given me a bit of encouragement to dig out the old puddle chucker and have a go on the river or local canal. Nice cheap, fun fishing.
Great idea using the silicon tubing on the line for the shot, what silicon tubing do you use out of curiosity? I'd like to get some, perfect for protecting the line from damage.
I'm actually going to the stretch of thames you fished in that match .pangbourne way on the 16th on the other side .still not sure how to fish it .I'm going for the night so probably ledger under an over hanging oak and willow .any suggestions for me please would be great .nice channel by the way 👍👍
@@JonArthur thanks for the reply Jon .I'm actually going this Friday so you can imagine the intense excitement. I will let you know how I get on if your interested. I have heard there is big bream and Carp in the stretch ,I prefer the barbel and chub personally.
Yes and I plan to go there again. It's just big fish or bust but some big bream about. Last time I went my friend and I just caught a few little perch, but the canal was clear and I think the locks were shut as we never saw a boat. I've fished all around that bit over the years, from Rowington and Knowle through to Dark Lane and Hatton Locks.
We're can you fish the canal at tunnel barn I had a look but to shore Tony in the shop said you can go on at a day ticket but not to shore were abouts and what baits be best how about a nice video on that bit jon boy tight lines fella and keep safe
There is a padlocked gate from Tunnel car park so they have to open it for you. To the left is the tunnel itself, but I think you want to go the opposite way where the old boats are, opposite Bottom Pool.
Enjoyable upload Jon, your still too young to have so many trips down memory lane...gets worse the older you get lol. Now get back Match Fishing and earn some of those brown envelopes....then we armchair anglers can watch how you did it. Thanks for making these videos, always enjoyable.

I wish tackle companies would do more to promote the waggler fishing method. I feel that it’s a cheaper a more versatile method for beginners to use across a variety of venues including canals, commercials and rivers.
Certainly the most enjoyable tactic
Get yourself a whip John loads off fun on canals
You'd laugh if you saw just how many whips I own. I've got loads! Even used to make my own ultra short 1-1.5m ones for gudgeon bashing. No gudgeon left any more in all my local cuts and too many bonus perch and bream about to risk using a whip on most canals I know anyway, unless you're just catching very little roach. But whip fishing on the river is something else and I still do that a bit!
Perfect👌🏻👏🏻
Thanks Ben :-)
Really nice to see an Eel,a sad rarity everywhere these days.
Plenty in the canals I think. And the rivers I fish.
@@JonArthur You cheer me up saying that. The upper great Ouse and the local pits i fish would welcome a return :)
I had one of those Dave Berrows wagglers! Must have been Angling Times
It was definitely sellotaped the front of the Anglers Mail. They had bigger connections with Middy who made them.
@@JonArthur I rarely bought the angler's mail... on this occasion it must have been just for the waggler!
Leamington) local guy canal angler, you'll love this true story =
I got drawn on a mediocre peg in a 200 pegger open match
I was near the viaduct , just above the lock on the Offchurch/Radford Road ..
Used to love catching them :-(
I think I still have that same caster float from the front of Anglers Mail.
Loved a free float on the cover! :-)
Great video Jon, nice to see an old traditional method being used, can you tell me when you plumb up on a waggler where on the float is it best to work to for your bait to sit stable on the deck, top of the body or on the float tip its self?
'Dead depth' is when you can just see the float tip, so I tend to plumb up to that but fish an inch or two over depth to begin with.
Why is your clutch set so loose for little silvers? It’d be great to get some shots of where the float is and the bites but you’ve given me a bit of encouragement to dig out the old puddle chucker and have a go on the river or local canal. Nice cheap, fun fishing.
Soft clutch makes a soft rod even more forgiving with light hooklengths. You’d definitely need it with a puddle chucker as they’re a bit pokey.
Great idea using the silicon tubing on the line for the shot, what silicon tubing do you use out of curiosity? I'd like to get some, perfect for protecting the line from damage.
Finest you can get. Mines 0.3mm I think.
Nice video Jon, shame about that old reel you need a cs10 3000 reel on that rod 😂
It's a nice reel, just a loud clutch on the camera
cracking old picture, nice to see ya fishing old style... poles get a bit 'seen it before' . . i hate eels.......
Cheers, I've got a few more pearlers that I might do a feature on the back of.
Which one was you in that photo shoot
The cheeky gappy toothed one on the left on the 2nd photo
I'm actually going to the stretch of thames you fished in that match .pangbourne way on the 16th on the other side .still not sure how to fish it .I'm going for the night so probably ledger under an over hanging oak and willow .any suggestions for me please would be great .nice channel by the way 👍👍
Hope you caught a few. Big shoals of bream early season if you can locate them!
@@JonArthur thanks for the reply Jon .I'm actually going this Friday so you can imagine the intense excitement. I will let you know how I get on if your interested. I have heard there is big bream and Carp in the stretch ,I prefer the barbel and chub personally.
Great video as alway jon have you ever fished the canal at the bottom of tunnel barn ie the grand union
@@JonArthur thanks john I be back down there in september might even see ya there
The local canals must be responsible for 100s of anglers ending up hooked. The only play station we had along with the local park
Thanks Paul
Enjoyable upload Jon, your still too young to have so many trips down memory lane...gets worse the older you get lol. Now get back Match Fishing and earn some of those brown envelopes....then we armchair anglers can watch how you did it. Thanks for making these videos, always enjoyable.
That's the plan!
