  • More 2021 2022 1290 SAS video on my channel.
    Just a short video on how to install the Touratech pannier and mount onto the 2021 KTM 1290 Super Adventure.
    I could not find any manual online at the time. So the best alrernative is to add panniers in the bike configurator on the KTM website and look at the photo. And take as much info from that as possible.
    Overall I think it looks good.

    Hope it helps!

    Hi Ric! Thanks for sharing. Loved the idea of mod the side covers it looks how it should, much better than without. Had the same taught. Ordered my pannier rack at my dealer but it seems I only will get them at mid August. For the panniers u have some serious cargo capacity. That's great they look awesome. For me not sure if I will stick with those Evos or with the touratech smaller zega pro 2s 31/38lts.
    Thanks again for sharing,
    A good Sunday 👍

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the side covers looked much better than the exposed bolt holes all up the side. Took a bit of thinking though as cutting out a part on a new bike is never advisable but this works well and can’t notice anything different. As you say it looks as it should.
      I too won’t use this often once a few times a year! And have had outback trekkers before. So am used to hard luggage.
      Although 99% of the time I’m a top box and roll top bag guy myself.
      Good luck on the panniers though and hope all arrives sooner! Yes there is a back log on everything 🤦‍♂️
      Let me know what you get and how you find them! 👍

      Hello there Shaft! Thanks for the feedback and watching the clip. yes i too found it hard to locate some footage on youtube too. And at the time (not sure about now) there was nothing in the KTM online parts manuals for installation. So I just thought it be helpful for someone doing the same as myself at home. Also its great to see all the luggage in a video before buying instead of just the photos on the internet.
      yes I like the Mosko stuff and actually wouldnt mind the orange and black limited edition soft luggage (however being LE means they are already all gone haha). Also I dont use panniers often but when I do I need security and you cannot beat hard luggage for that.
      Good luck on the new model when it comes out. I have never understood why you guys always a year behind on these?

    Hi again Ric
    KTM came out and fixed my bike today. He knew what the problem was before he came. He replaced the right hand switch gear under warranty. The race on button had water damage. So be careful and put a plastic bag around it, if you ride in the rain or wash the bike.

    • @RicardoYeep

      @@jamessymes1 totally agree. I’d rather have piece of mind an prevent being stuck in the middle of nowhere. And pay 140 should they argue a warranty. I’ll probably just go with ACF50 though. Ricardo. I 100% agree that Touratech should have provided some black silicon gromit plugs or aesthetically pleasing blanking plates. That is a misstep on their part to the details. Good recovery improvising the mod to those plastic rails

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hiya Tom! Yeah mate I agree to let the end finish fall on something as simple as that is a shame. Even Triumph have blanking plates to finish the bike off when they have bolt holes unused. They could have simply supplied perforation marks on the covers inside. As simple as that. But no. They have the bike with no covers and no plugs. Cheers Ric

    Thanks for sharing, great videos. Have you ridden the bike with the panniers and top box and noticed any wobbling/vibrations? I'm getting my 1290 this week and will mount the same panniers and top box (like yours) I had on the 790 s.
    On the 790s I had some minor wobbling/vibrations if I took my hands off the handle bars.
    No vibrations in the bike without the boxes mounted.

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hiya! Thanks for watching and the comment! I have not yet but will be testing them out soon. I can confirm some slight wobble at high speed with the top box as I have been using that alone. Possible increased also by the added reduction in aerodynamic of the panniers rails possibly. But road legal speeds (no noticeable wobble). I would expect something with the panniers too similar to my tiger with them mounted. Without any of them though my 1290 is solid as a rock and could max it out if I wanted. I’ll keep you informed mate and see how the are when all on the bike.

    So, went for an hour long test ride on the SAS today… very different to the Blackbird and a joy to ride in all situations - motorway and city. Wish I could have brought her home…via somewhere nice and far away.
    I rewatched your video about mounting the Touratechs…one thing I really liked about your set up was the modification to the KTM rear plastic “covers” that sits over the mounting mechanism attachment points to the bike itself. You mentioned in the video that you modified those covers so that they could be reattached (because they shouldn’t be) making the final look, look 100% better.
    Would it be possible for you to show what you actually did to be able to reattach those plastic covers please?
    Cheers mucker, Pedro

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hiya Pedro! Fantastic to hear you really enjoyed the test ride. I love the bike.
      As for the plastic covers. My initial thoughts that they were not meant to go back on was driven by the photos on the KTM configuration web page. As it did not show them attached once racks were installed.
      However despite using a hole saw and a lucky approx guess. I later realised there are dotted markers on the underside which I believe are a guide for cutting into. In the shape of a triangle to allow the rack tube to pass through! 👌
      So far I’ve heard that others have since used this as the basis to cut 👍
      Hope that helps!
      Cheers

    Hi Ricardo, first off…great videos, even a numpty like me can follow the various processes you demonstrate….doing them myself, that’s up for discussion. I am looking to get a SAS - got a Gen 1 SuperDuke R but need something fun to tour and enjoy the twisties once there. The SDR is great in the twisties, but knackering to tour on, hence the SAS. Plus my current touring bike is a 2006 Blackbird….she is in top nick, but she is hard work in the twisties. So she is getting traded in for the SAS.
    I must admit that I too was looking to get the OEM panniers (having flip flopped for a while between them and Touratech ones)….having read your rationale and eventual outcome, I think I am now going to go for the Touratech ones (in black). I realize that they are the official Touratechs for the KTM, but do you happen to know which version they are relative to the Touratech catalogue? The reason for the question is I would like to know which other accessories are compatible e.g. inner bags, toolkit etc.
    Anyway Ricardo, thanks for all the videos, enjoyed them all…even if I would not actually do some of work on the bike myself, but it they are brilliant to know what is in the realm of the possible.
    Rubber side down mate, Pedro

      @RicardoYeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hiya Pedro thank you kindly for the great feedback! good to hear you found them useful! Sounds like you are doing a good move on the refresh on the blackbird. The SAS wont hit that top end but to be fair it is still fast enough. And as you say comfy on the long haul! And fun in the twisties!!! :)
      Yep I have on regrets on the Pannier choice (or ended up with). The equivalent Touratech website (ie not the KTM branded version) would be the Zega Pro 2 as far as I a aware. I know this as I purchased the Touratech tool box (pannier frame mounted). See below link to a post in the "Community" section on the channel (PS where I have other stuff but not video content). It is a fantastic tool box. Lockable and spacious and so far water proof as I keep my jump starter power pack in there along with a air compressor / inflator.
      Inner bags are expensive but am also considering them. Its not great having stuff bang around inside without them... Althoug you can get after market ones for a lot less I guess.
      Good luck on the buying.. keep in touch and let me know how you get on!!!!
      Cheers

    Greetings Ricardo!!! First of all love your videos, they are very helpful. I have a question for you regarding the Lock Barrel and the KTM key. I have a 2022 1290 Super Adventure S and the bike itself is fully keyless. My question is do the cases come with a key? You have mentioned that use have used the KTM key for coding the barrel. • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hello and thank you for the kind feedback! Regarding the keys. The key has nothing to do to with the bike. When you order a set of panniers or topbox you also need to order a lock sets and key set. Only 2 keys come in a key set. The key will determine how you code up the locks.
      You will need 3 locks per side pannier and 2 locks for the top case. So for a full set of panniers and topbox you will need in total 8 lock/barrels. each lock/barrel should come with the latches/pins used to code up to the key
      You will need to go to a ktm dealer for these and they can order in for you. Hope that helps 👍

      Hello there and thanks for the comment. I can say that the suspension pro I understand is an optional extra that can either be paid for as a stand alone accessory or can be included with the Tech Pack (which I recommend if you have this bike. As the bike is a high tech bike and no point unless you get it full loaded in my opinion). The Suspension pro allows front and rear customisation and also has addition preset modes to choose from. These are the best I have used. I have owned Givi trekkers in the past and albeit also great. There is something a little bit better in these but can’t put my finger on it. I think these just feel sturdier and has a slightly better quality finish to them.
      I’d still have no issues buying the Givi but out of the two I’d take these touratech 👍

    Hello Ricardo. First of all, I want to congratulate you for the great help that your videos are for me. On my 1290sas I have many of the equipment you have already installed, and one of the problems is the keys of the touratech luggage . It's already the second one that gets rooked. I know they should not be used as a lever, but the locks are so strong that the keys are a help. Have you never had this issue?

      Hello Jose! Thanks for the kind words. The keys are quite soft I have bent one a little already but still works. Need be careful with the keys. Yes the locks are very strong and sometimes need fine tuning. You may have seen from my video that I needed to grind off some metal from the lock mechanism before I assembled it. As the lock was so misaligned it was impossible to turn. But now is all good . If you bought yours already assembled most likely they just put it together as per instructions. I did some minor customise before completed assembly 👍

    Hi Ric - Was there any specific reasons you went for Touratech panniers rather than the OEM Powerparts ones? Just curious as to whether there was some info you could share about why you preferred them? Or was it just availability?

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hiya Brendan
      Good question! First off I will have to start at the beginning as had a major factor in my initial decision…. I have had both oem plastic panniers and also the adventure spec givi Outback trekkers on my 800XCA. By far the aluminium boxes are far lighter and a little more robust. As well as looked better on that bike.. the Drawback being scaffolding on the alu boxes permanently fixed.. which dependent on set up and priority is also a blessing… if you want to add external pannier rail toolkit boxes. And protection for any expensive exhaust. As they act as a simple crash bar to some extent.
      However ever my initial decision with my 1290 was to go with oem plastic in this instance. For the main reasons being they have a slightly more fitted and wrap around the silencer. Also slightly cheaper than the Touratech which given I’ll use them probably once a year and always on road they would do the job. And also the generally looked great in my opinion. And I fancied a change from alu boxes with scaffolding. Particularly as the 1290 looks slick when nice and clean lined.
      End result.. the dealer kept letting me down time and time again with delays. And I needed to have some panniers. Dealer offered to pay the difference in value and get me the Touratech set within days. So went for the Touratech…
      Afterthought: I am glad I went with the Touratech after all which was pure luck given the reason I ended up with them.
      The build quality is 100% and the style suits the bike very well indeed particularly in the black.
      I’ve not heard of moaning about these unlike the oem plastics and their unreliable mounting / lock systems. Some don’t have issues but some do if you google enough.
      Also after installing them the frames are easy to remove in 10 mins once you done it a few times. So no big deal there. I’ll keep them off until I need to use my panniers.
      Also as you might know I have that akrapovic which is fkn crazy expensive. At least with the mounts on the van will hopefully be slightly saved a little from a low speed drop if so. As the frames are rock solid.
      And also as mentioned if going on a long haul involving wild camping then I could also have extra tool capacity by adding a pannier mounted toolkit.
      So overall I think it was fate that I ended up with the better choice “for me anyway”. As it has more positives than negatives.
      Also I learnt to code up lock sets 😂. Which is a plus..
      Hope that helps
      Cheers

      Hey there ! If I am honest I am a full time top box and roll top bag man myself. Only on rare occasions will I use panniers.
      However when I do use panniers it will be on long haul trips and want security. And can leave stuff on the bike while doing some walking around or visiting a cafe or restaurant etc. You cannot beat the security of hard luggage. Also any off-road may end up doing on holiday I can just leave the panniers at the hotel or in the tent at the camp site. Job done 👍
      However if your trip involves wild camping and is an off-road holiday start to finish for sure I would go with soft luggage to be honest. Like you mentioned.

    Howdy Ricardo,
    I bought a 1290 SAS in May '17, specced it to the hilt and after 5yrs and 13,000 miles excellent touring miles, I'm looking to sell it and order the new model. On my current one I went for the moulded plastic pannier kit that attached to the floating carrier built to the bike. The main reason being that on my old 990 I tended to find that the width of the rear with the rack and boxes fitted, felt like the cases were in separate post codes. On the new model, it seems that they've done away with the floating case idea as a standard mounting, and you have to pay extra for it, making the cost of the two set ups very similar overall. How do you find the width of Touratech set up? Great channel and I'll be having a catch up with the videos you've done. Cheers, Ed

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hiya Ed! Thanks for the comment mate and glad to hear your liking the content. I have been bit tied up of late but will be back again more regularly at some point. Yep feel free to check out the 80 or so vids in the library.
      Regarding the Touratech set up I personally dont have a problem as I only use the panniers if going touring. And when I do I am generally chilled out and no intention of filtering. So far I have used them once just to cart stuff from house to house and yes they can be a PIA in UK traffic. But as said I dont intend on daily use. And to be honest I dont think I would be filtering anyway with the fitted plastic panniers which are slightly narrower. All in all Panniers Suck anyway regardless.
      Full points go for build quality of the Touratech KTM panniers. I have also got the Touratech pannier liner bags too. I am pleased I ended up with these as the racks for the panniers provided a fixing point for the Touratech Tool box which I have a load of useful stuff locked away inside. (Something you cannot do with the plastic ones that do not have the frames.
      Also I have dropped my bike on both sides doing off road rally event. The pannier racks have protected my Akrapovic exhaust from any scratches at all. So they serve more than just the purpose of holding up a pannier in my opinion!
      Hope that helps! :)

    I hate exhaust on my 2018 SAS, bcs of that is right case smaller :/ Looks like, they did the same for 2021 bike even with bigger exhaust. The way, like it is exhaust designed on 1200/1260 mts is much better, but i dont say that mts is better bike overall.

      Hey Stefan !! Yeah I hear you mate. You either love it or hate it. But I hear a lot of riders buy the Bumot panniers and they are shaped around the exhaust if you don’t like the A symmetric design of the Touratech stuff. I find a lot of dual sport bikes have the same issue as most have the exhaust up the side and the right case sticks out if you chose to have matching panniers boxes. The smaller box on the right does keep it even on width though. Although you compromise on luggage space. Bumot is the way to go for that fitted look though 👍
      Cheers for watching mate and also for the comment! Very valid point as a lot feel the same about the pannier design fitting.
      Cheers
      Ric!

    Well , as much as I like the look, they’re just to big for me. Filtering with those panniers must be unpleasant experience. I’ll try sport ones, bike is 101 cm wide with sport panniers all together. Now, I’d prefer to load my stuff from the top, not from sides, but there’ll be always some sort of compromise.

      Agree but to be fair I wont be filtering with any panniers. Whenever I have panniers I am generally on a long haul trip and chilled out not in a rush. And being in a foreign country I rate security highest. As with you I ride mostly a top box or topbox and bag if need must. rarely use panniers. But They are great and would not swap these bad boys out for alternatives. Maybe I would get a second set (soft panniers like Mosko) to accompany for different requirements.

      Yeah, I’ll give you that. I still have Giant Loop made in US from my CeeBee RR and they’re great idea….up to the point you have to unpack them and set the camp up :(
      But they’re lovely for safe filtering (size)
      Strongly recommend!

    Permanently mounted panniers are awful looking. SW motech quick release are the only way to go.

      Hello mate and thanks for watching the video. Appreciated 🤝
      I have to agree with you I also prefer a clean look. And initially ordered the oem plastics as they have a clean look too.
      However I have owned permanent pannier mounts on previous bikes and they do offer some level of protection to a slow fall in respect of the exhaust.
      Now the Akrapovic is nearly £1200 so in this situation I have decided to have solid pannier racks installed. The Touratech are very good for this reason.
      But I completely agree if you want a clean look there are other options available 👍
      Cheers
