@@BrandonsGarage Here's another question for you. I didn't see you replace the thermostats in this video while you had the head pulled. Was it a matter of "if it isn't broke don't fix it," or was it not in the customer's budget? I have a '95 88spl and I'm considering pulling the head to replace the powerhead gasket. It seems to be leaking and leaving a mess on the lower engine cover. Would it be good preventative maintenance to replace thermostats at that time? I don't know how reliable those thermostats are, and with your experience I figure you'd be able to tell me if they are a common failure point. The motor has only ever run in fresh water.
My first boat had a 1985 V4 90 and it was the first time I ever looked at an outboard engine. Mine had a whole bunch of fuel hoses that were leaking and it was “fun” job figuring that out.
I love it when they bark to life. I’m putting a 4 horse Johnson (‘74) together that was submerged and full of sand, pistons were stuck, and lots of corrosion on everything. I hunted down and bought all the parts I need (took a while). Everything is cleaned up and waiting for Spring warmth to continue.
Nice gauge I will need one I'm starting to work on carb motors not too many people work on carbs ...I've been cleaning motorcycle carbs for over 30 years ... starting a change of life to outboard. I enjoy watching your videos keep them coming.

Couldn't imagine pulling the power head off and not putting a gasket back on hahah, geez. I fix the odd boat here and there and the sticky timing tree (is that what's it's called?) happens on 90% of the engines I get. I also had to change a power head one time and I learned how to do it from one of you're videos. Thanks a ton for doing these Brandon.
I have a 1982 Johnson Evinrude. It has problems, still runs, but I've gotten advice from a good guy that fixes motors. You are one of the best mechanics I've seen. I'd like for this motor to last for my grand boys. Where are you located?
That motor fires better than the one with the o/s piston. I also have a fair amount of scoring on the start board bank and hit 120 psi but loss abt 3mph on the top end with inefficient combustion rough idle cuz of the excessive friction @ the damage wall oil coating.
I got one of those in the garage, i did alot of fixing on it , one day it started running bad and someone offered me a 140 johnson , so i swapped it , it ended up i had bad fuel lines and primer bulb , the johnson wouldnt run either until i changed tge fuel lines , hell of a way to diagnose fuel lines though , kind of pricey to do it that way 😂
Thanks for the great videos. I live on the river in Mohave valley. You go by my place in some of your videos. How do I contact you for service. Thanks Tom
Subscribed to your Patreon although it looks to not be used much. Great videos on here. I have a question about adding a tell-tale to a 115etl75e. Could I drill and tap into the outer cover in the location that this motor has its tell-tale? Could I possibly swap covers from a different year motor with it already installed?
FYI, it looks like you’re using Permatex aviation sealant, denatured alcohol works really well cleaning that up. Even dried on the can. You can get rid of that aluminum foil wrap.
Enjoy your troubleshooting. I’m curious why you steer towards the power pack before checking coils. It is more likely that power packs go first? Thanks for sharing
Well, they usually don't fail; They just leak and send sparks elsewhere. Coils usually improve running/idling, but 99 times out of 100, a no spark isn't the coils.
@@BrandonsGarage very interesting thanks. Keep up the troubleshooting component. It really helps. Showing how to check parts and pointing out symptoms is very useful. Enjoy your videos. The tools look really expensive!
Why did you not remove the spark plugs and lubricant the cylinders before turning the motor over? I’m working on a 1988 Evinrude 50 hp right now and following your instructions to start a motor that has not run in years.
I don’t know about the USA but in the uk dam straight id be in that shop claiming my lifetime warranty and they would honour it because staff can’t be bothered with an argument most the time
Hey man I have one just like it and I’m currently working on. Mines an 1995 88 spl johnson. Do you know what the timing at wot is supposed to be and and idle ?
What is the big flat piece with the 4 bolts up the middle? Mine is leaking water out of the bottom left corner. Any idea what my problem might be? @Brandon's Garage
laser table guy should be able to etch the numbers no problem. i know our table could do it. just find a differnt table. maybe cause they are made from aluminum.try stainless. but i think our table has etched alum. food for thought.

Where are you located? I’d like to pick your brain for a second I’m stumped. I have a newly (November last year took it out once and then today) aquired 1986 Johnson 90hp on a VIP Fish and Ski. I changed plugs, drained old gas added new, changed lower unit gear oil. I took it out today for first run of the season and it fired up, and idled fine. We spent 4-5 hours on the lake. Then when it’s time to go dock and load onto trailer it wants to die as soon as you put in forwards or reverse gear. It will fire right up with the choke lever and will idle after you slowly lower lever. But as soon as you move throttle handle forward or reverse it dies. It did the same thing last November when we first got the boat. It’s weird it seems to not do it at the start of the day but at the end it does it every time. I know hardly anything about outboards so thanks in advance. 1986 Johnson 90hp Model # J90TLCDC
