I have a '88 Johnson 15. It's got carbon reeds, intake manifold splitter removed and polished, head is shaved .040 and it has been drystacked, 3/8 shorter tuner. Advanced ignition. It runs 7400 all day. With a worked stainless prop I have seen 36 mph on my 1236 jon boat. Haven't ran it in years. Makes me wanna get er back going again.
I had a 1988 and a 2004 15hp, the 2004 definitely had a bit more power but when it came time to sell one I kept the 1988 model. The old 88 model never let me down once from new, still use it on my little 12 footer in the rivers, 36 years old and runs like a dream.
Funny how the 'new' one is now over 30 years old! But also it's great that you have both of these. I think the plastic cowling is what makes the newer one sound so different.
I own a 1978 85hp rude, never has let me down. Slurps fuel like my pickup lol but purs like a kitten once warm and sounds beautiful opened up on my old bowrider ski boat from 78 to match

the engineer's name was Robert (Bob) Berry, I sat in front of him at OMC engineering as a new engineer hire. I am an avid fisherman and took out an early motor from him. told him it was the best fishing motor I had ever used. he did a great job on it.

Those are a couple of Good Running OMC 15 hp Outboard motors ! My Dad had Mostly OMC Johnson and a few Evinrude and 1 Mercury 20 hp. I have had Mostly OMC Evinrude and a Couple of Johnson and a Mercury 40 hp. All 2 Stroke. They All ran good 👍
In fact, Johnson and Evinrude started building outboard motors in Belgium all the way back at the end of 1959. From 1960 and onwards, there were large quantities built in Belgium that mainly ended up in Europe, but also in the US. Thanks for the video. It's nice to see a comparison between these great motors.
Stavros in Florida been watching these videos for a while and enjoyed them thank you, but the older 15 evinrude with a growl not bad for a growl. Running will make that little boat fly, all you'll need is a pair of wings.
The old one has actually only 12-13 hp. If the new one has real life 15 hp it sure feels stronger. I have the old one, I have to replace the starting cord, but in those models it is a pain in the b because the spool is like a manual starter motor with bendix and all. but it sure is reliable. I once accidentally added straight gas to it creating about 1/500 oil ratio, and wondered why it sort of stumbled now and then. It almost seized. It still works. Wish they would make mechanical stuff like they used to... I was once on an island in the Gulf Of Finland, about 10 miles from the shore in November, ice was starting to form, but I had to drive it from there. It was 8 degrees below freezing. It started all right, but I had to run it on gear for a while agaist the dock to get it running clean. Then I got the little ten foot boat on plane and noticed to my horror that the wind was picking up and the waves started to grow. After few miles the boat was propably 200 pounds heavier because every spray froze instantly. I promised to myself that if I now stay alive, I will never again do anything this stupid; if the little engine had failed, I could have just died. I got to the harbour that was already on thin ice. When the boat was on trailer, it looked like I had too liitle pressure on tires, but the boat was just that much heavier. The little outboard just kept going even though it was covered with half an inch of solid ice that only started to melt on trailer.
Today I service my little Sport Twin 9 1/2 HP. It's built the same way your 1980 15 HP is. If serviced they run forever and a Sunday. I'd say the old ones are super reliable. They can even limp back on one cylinder if one coil fails.

Not sure where you ate located ,but i live in Southern Michigan. You can pick up small older outboards for a couple hundred dollars all day long. Makes it kinda nice. I wanted to put a cheap boat together to take my nephews bow fishing at night. Picked up a great little 28hp Johnson spl with nice newer omc controlls for $600.: I've see just the controls used for $400. 16 ft. Flat bottom,that outboard couple seats off marketplace,used old replaced street signs covered in home Depot outdoor gray carpet for casting decks. Basically got a bass boat that'll run 26 mph with 2 adults 2 kids all on for $1100.
Engines for the European market were manufactured in Belgium as early as the 1970s. They were still good. Sometime in the 1990s, OMC engines came from Hong Kong and I don't appreciate them.
was just gonna comment this. Hong Kong i believe was just the little 2, 2.3, 3.3hp motors I believe but the real blunder was Mexico! Getting all those parts made and shipped down there especially the gearcases cost alot more than just making them at the factory like they used to. big mistake trying to outsource.
The 1993 motor is bigger. Its 255ccm block. The 1974-1992 is a 216ccm block. The bigger block most likely has 2-3hp more just because of The size difference alone😊👍🏼
Odd no mention they are 2 completely different blocks! you can hear the 1992-up one sounds throatier because well.. its a bigger block. if you rebuilt the 83' and got it properly bored and new pistons, they are actually quieter (especially the 1986-up ones with the updated muffler and plastic top carbs) than the top mounted starter ones at nearly all speeds.
The older generation is not 15HP at the prop, it is rated at the powerhead, the 1993 is a true 15 at the prop, go with the newer engine, also the recoil on the older engine is junk

Evinrude and Johnson were far better than merc. 2 ⚁ cycle 🚴 are going to be worth a lot of money 💵 in the future 🔮, people in the know will want them. 😊

The newer 15 is a larger-displacement engine. In the early 1990s OMC increased the displacement of both the 9.9 and 15 from 13.2 cubic inches to 15.5.

You find these haven’t run in 20yr motors and they fire right up. You will pay a premium for a nice one these days

Evinrude made their motors In America. The only motors made in Belgium were the 2-3-4-6-8 hp motors in the 90s. those were all great motors anyway
@@Yamahaoutboardguy5090 accept the 2 cyl 40-60hp loopers. I would know I have a 1982 model # J50BELcnr! the BEL is definitely Belgium!

Nothing official but the 1993 seems faster. On a 12ft boat it’s all relative though, both seem fast

I'd use 32cc/1000cc type tcw3 outboard oil, fresh fuel and recently mixed only Do not use gasoline aged more than 3-months. High octane is safer.
Is one crossflow and the other loop charged ?
