    This was awesome to watch. My Dad and I built a house together 4 hours away from where we lived. We worked every weekend for almost 3.5 years. Sadly right about the time we finished, he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and passed away 7 months later. Your video reminded me of one of the best times I ever had with my Dad. Thanks for sharing your journey.

      you have to realise that doing these videos probably helped him get through with the project, giving him motivation and another source of income. + you can see his family was there most of the time so you have to assume they helped with the videos, and other stuff, he wasnt all alone.

      Cause how is anyone sure they followed the proper safety precautions, all the building codes etc etc. If the build collapses because of skipped costs people would be blaming Home Depot “why did you let them build such a unsafe home”, “is this what Home Depot about? Profiting off of people who can’t design a safe house?” Etc etc. Not worth the risk, not enough guarantee he did everything he should of. He did say he saved costs more than the average cost of building, that makes me asks how? And don’t say discount, discounts can only go so far, without cutting into cheap material that isn’t that effective long term.

      Smart way to do it, I had my home payed by age 32, bought it at forecloser dirt cheap, and then fixed it as I had the cash come in to bypass a loan. Took 6 months and $15,000 in repairs but I made it.

      Except for fire, these houses seem to be OK even after 100+ years, Victoria houses in New York is testament.
      Here in India, we build brick and mortar house, but after just 20-30 years they require whole lot of renovation.

    This reminds me of my great grandfather, who lived in the north of Sweden, close to the coldest place in sweden. There they only had 3-4 months without snow and the rest was below freezing and they would get towards 3-4m snow each year. In 1930 when he was 18 years he started building his house all alone. He dug the basement by hand in solid rock mountain, he built the house by hand in wood and after about 5 years they could move in. The house is still standing and our relatives still lives in it.

      I showed my wife and said, I dont think he works a full time job because I'd take longer than 3 years with one man working 40 hours a week and coming home to work 2 or 3 hours. Weekends are pretty much it when you work.

      AMEN, we got turned down for a construction loan, built with cash, NO mortgage !! Life has hidden blessing for sure. Then the bank offered an equity loan !! "Are you kidding, you will never have your finger in my pocket." They seemed offended.

      kr0w My algorithm came up with a chap removing crap from drains ( don’t laugh, it was actually very cathartic and the dude was doing a public service for free, from the heart) now it comes up with this.
      Sometimes the algorithm can go tits up, but this just seems quite right to me.

      Toza Same. Went down a rabbit hole (drain hole?) of watching draining videos for a while the other day. The guy was trying to unclog the drains and cars were being rude splashing instead of going around even though there wasn’t much traffic.

    I was thinking as I watched this awesome vid: a lot of people head off to college. Why? Get a great job to get a great home. To go to college, the go into debt. With their great job, they pay down their debt and get a great home. The get more debt. They work for 30 years (at best) to pay everything off. Now, old and tired, they can enjoy their home.
    In the same time of a university education, this man accomplished all of that, for a fraction of the cost, with myriad lessons, strengthening experiences and sources of pride in oneself to accompany the prize. I'd say this man just gave us the ultimate "life hack."

It was about how the guy in the video could look around and see that he had built all this himself, knowing he had gone through lots throughout the journey, and that in the end he was proud of what he'd done. He knew that because he had put in all this work, he could give his dog some water that he had worked for all by himself.
